The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Great collection of sacred music.......2005-12-23

What a great collection, many real sacred classics, all delivered in very heartfelt, but simple way, and Kiri's voice is just so beautiful. And I like the fact that there are many different moods, there are some songs which are very soothing, slow pieces but also different ones, and the the final songs are Let The Bright Seraphim which is so uplifting and bright and Let Their Celestial Concerts. They are both from Samson, it's refreshing to hear these tracks instead of the usual pieces from Messiah.
My favourite songs are Bist du bei mir and especially Mozart's Ave Verum, so perfect when sung by Kiri, I know so many different versions but these are probably the best I have heard.
Mozart's Laudate Dominum is done very nicely, good tempo and such great singing. Kirir has a great trill! Panis Angelicus is good too, I wish Kiri would do something else instead of this worn classic, but her version of Schubert's Ave Marias on this album is actually very good. This is a great, refreshing collection overall, well put together, with very tasteful arrangements. There is also a nice chorus, they only sing in few pieces but they sound really good.
There is a small problem with the sound level on this album, it's true, but Kiri's voice still sounds beautiful, just crank up the volume a little bit, so you can hear her better. Maybe the bright seraphim will hear her too!

An Inspiring and Heartening Compilation.......2004-07-12

Kiri Te Kanawa voice never fails to inspire me and uplift my spirit. Her rendition of "Ave Maria" is just so beautiful and moving that its effect on the listener can not be expressed in mere words. Kiri's voice and intuitive nature of delivering the inner strength and emotion of each selection on this CD is just inspiring.

Dame Kiri's voice shines in these beautiful sacred pieces, and as her biographer David Fingleton, in his excellent liner notes for this CD points out, that going back to her youth and first voice teacher, who was a Sister of Mercy, church music has always been a part of her repertoire, even though she is mostly noted as an operatic soprano.
Favorites include Gounod's exquisite "O Divine Redeemer" ("Repentir"), the two Mozart pieces, "Laudate Dominum" (from "Vesperae solennes de confessore" KV 339), and "Ave Verum" KV 618, and the luminous performance of Schubert's popular "Ave Maria".

Track # 11, Purcell's "Trumpet Time", is a trumpet solo by Crispian Steele-Perkins, and there is also a good and jolly trumpet on track # 11, Handel's "Let the Bright Seraphim" from "Samson", which is the piece Dame Kiri sang in St. Paul's Cathedral for the Prince and Princess of Wales, at their wedding in 1981, and has become one of her most often requested songs.
This recording was made in 1984, at the All Saints' Church in Tooting, England, and the sound is not great but quite adequate. The boys of the Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral sing like little angels, and the English Chamber Orchestra is led by Barry Rose. Total time is 47:40.
This would make a nice change of pace CD during the Christmas Season, and for fans of this wonderful soprano, hearing her voice is a joy any time of the year.

Track 2 is Laudate Dominum from Vespearae solennes de confesore (K.337) and not Vespeare de Dominica (K.321) as the listing says.
Both Mozart's arias are beautiful, though.

I LEARNED TO PLAY CHOPSTIX AND THE RIGHT HAND PART OF BLUE MOON FROM MY FATHER WHEN I WAS LITTLE. I LEARNED TO SING FRERE JAQUES FROM HIM TOO AND WE SANG IT TOGETHER IN ROUNDS. I KNOW WHERE MIDDLE C IS ON THE PIANO AND THIS IS THE EXTENT OF WHAT I KNOW ABOUT MUSIC. SO YOU EXPERTS CAN JUST GO TO THE NEXT REVIEW IF YOU LIKE AND I WONT BE OFFENDED. I AM A KNUCKLEHEAD BY YOUR STANDARDS AND I WOULDN'T PAY ATTENTION TO ME EITHER IF I WERE YOU. BUT FOR THE REST OF YOU, LET ME SAY THAT THIS WOMAN'S VOICE IS LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER HEARD. THE MUSIC SHE CHOSE TO SING FIRST OF ALL, IS BEATUIFUL, JUST BEAUTIFUL. YOU'LL GET GOOSEBUMPS. BUT HER VOICE IS THE THING. IT'S LIKE GOOD COLD SPRING WATER. There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.

Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03

I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Great singing and excellent value for money.......2004-09-19

This is probably one of the best anthologies of Purcell songs around, and not just because it's two-for-one pricing means it contains twice as much music (CD1:74'24" & CD2: 77'41")! Nancy Argenta has an irrepressible sense of style and crystal clear diction. But unlike Emma Kirby, whose vocal purity can become tiresome, these renditions radiate warmth. She is also, I have found, more consistently involving than any one of the singers in Hyperion's three disc survey of Complete Secular Songs (recently reissued as a single set). One marvels at how she judiciously balances restraint and emotional forthrightness. The accompaniments (archlute, viola da gamba, harpsichord, and organ) are well judged and blend with the voice, all helped by an excellently defined recording acoustic. This is an absolute winner at any price!

More than two hours of beautiful 17th century 'ayres'.......2001-08-02

Two CDs, totaling more than 150 minutes of sparsely-arranged (never more than 3-5 instruments at a time), sweetly-sung, 350 year old 'ayres' (a typically English form of secular music). Nancy Argenta's soprano voice is lovely, silvery indeed as her name implies. The instruments are a discreet but friendly accompaniment to her solo voice. Perhaps the instruments are a little too discreet -- there are times when I wish they were a touch more prominent. But that is a very, very minor complaint. A beautiful collection, and quite well worth the money.

Album Details

Digitally Remastered Coupling of Two Long Players from the Jennings Canon from the 1980's. "Music Man" was Jennings Last Number One Album, Spurned Up by the Inclusion of the "Theme to the Dukes of Hazzard", the Hit TV Show that He Occasionally Appeared on and Recorded this Hit Theme. It also Includes a Curious Yet Effective Rendering of Steely Dan's "do it Again". "Black on Black" was Produced by Chips Moman, who Had Just Produced Pal Willie Nelson's Chart Topping "Always on My Mind" Album. From the Dark Cover on Down, the Sound Here was Reflective of the Time, Using Production Methods that Tried to Make the Studio Experience Sound More Like the Live Experience....in This Case, with Mixed Results. Still, Willie Comes around to Help Save the Day with his Duet on "Just to Satisfy You" and the Ever Faithful Jessi Colter Lends Backing Vocals Throughout Both of These Albums.

Waylon's music is awesome, but ..........2007-03-10

Waylon Jennings was a master when it came to his song selection, musical arrangements, instrumentation and songwriting. Unfortunately this recording does not reflect his best work. While I bought the disc to include it in my Waylon collection, I was disappointed with the packaging itself.

My biggest disappointment with the packaging is what was NOT included: NO "musicians" list, NO documented original graphics, NO producer list, and NO list of songs and their writers. These facts are very important to me both personally and as one who has the utmost respect for producers, musicians and the songwriters.

My other disappointment ... who on earth was the author of the "opinion" commentary they included in the booklet? The opinion is riddled with misspellings and unimportant/inaccurate facts! If I wanted some unknown columnist's opinion, I would read Rolling Stone magazine or read the online blogs. I don't need to pay good money for someone to opinionize on Waylon's decision to include a Kenny Rogers cover as well as a cover of Steely Dan's "Do It Again." I wanted to know about who played on the Dukes of Hazzard theme song. I wanted to know what musicians were included on each recording. This opinion writer couldn't even spell HAZZARD or Uncle JESSE's name right in the text!

Some people may think my criticism is too harsh or nitpicking, but if you want a good comparison, please buy and review Waylon Jenning's "Are You Ready For the Country" CD. I own the original recording on vinyl LP. They masterfully reproduced all original pictures, commentary, musician lists and history of the making of the album.

Music Man / Black on Black should be domestically released. Amazon and other retails should boycott selling of this German import and encourage record companies to release this domestically and in the usual good quality manner.

Great CD.......2007-02-16

A must have for the Waylon collection

This is an excellent CD it has songs on it that are very hard to come by it took a long time to find it. They must just recently in the past year and a half or two years started printing it again.

Good Music, Bad CD.......2007-01-12

Music Man was a good album an Black On Black was a fair one; however,this cd package was terrible in quality. It was making noises and skipping by the third play.

Two early eighties albums.......2005-05-16

Some Waylon fans don't like these albums at all but while I agree that they don't match the brilliance of his best seventies music, they nevertheless have much to offer and I'm pleased that they were released on CD.

The two big hits here are, of course, the Dukes of Hazzard theme and the re-recording (with Willie Nelson) of Just to satisfy you. Elsewhere, there are fine covers of Clyde ( J J Cale), Sweet music man (Kenny Rogers), Honky tonk blues (Hank Williams), Folsom prison blues (Johnny Cash) and Song for the life (Rodney Crowell). Among the other songs here, Waylon expresses frustrations shared by many men in Women do know how to carry on, but he was a brave man to record such a song.

Buy Waylon's seventies music, much of which has also been released on CD, first. If you enjoy that, you will probably enjoy this twofer also.

True Outlaw Waylon!.......2003-09-12

As i have about every studio release of Waylon's music in one format or another,I consider myself an authority on his music.Waylon single handedly changed my opinion on country music,that it's not music for old people or hillbillies.American music is a better definition for what country is.And Waylon showed us that rough and rowdy folks are country too.I've owned this title since it's original two albums were released.Two perfect examples of the Waylon sound,when he was in the prime of his best known "outlaw sound".What a great thing to hear them on cd!! the tracks "It's alright","clyde","Nashville Women",and "Shine" were some of his best work.It's been a long time since this music was available,now it's better than ever for a new generation to enjoy

This musical soundtrack is my favorite! It has a diverse offering of artists who range in vocals from a very robust and alluring tenor to enchanting soprano. The types of songs go from fun & upbeat to "somebody-please-get-me-a-tissue" blues. These selections will make you envision whatever scene/theme that is being performed and will force you to crawl into the number and savor/enjoy the fun or the blues of it.

I had better expectations from this cd, but on the whole the music is great. Julian Lloyd Webber is a great cello player and the arrangements are very good. and is worth the money as it is a double album

John Philip Sousa was a great musician and a great American. These recorded relics are very fascinating, and sometimes most vivid, reminders of his greatness

This set consists of every recording released under the name of "the Sousa Band", from 1897-1930. Since some of these recordings are over 100 years old, they tend to be somewhat scratchy and occasionally faint. If you're a casual fan or you're buying your first Sousa record, your money can be better spent elsewhere.

However, these recordings are an invaluable resourse for students, performers, and teachers. Even with the limitations of early recording devices, there is no better demonstration of the style and nuance of the "March King" than these performances under his own baton. Also, the chance to actually hear Sousa's voice as he introduces the great "Stars and Stripes Forever" is to step into the past.

Mantovani's Eighth Million Seller Arrives on CD!.......2003-08-20

Italia Mia was the great maestro Mantovani's eighth, million selling recording in 1961. It stayed in the US charts for 50 weeks! This is not surprising because the Italian melodies enhanced by Mantovani's gifted arrangements are still attracting listeners today who may hear some of the renditions by the current day orchestra bearing the Mantovani name. These original recordings are even more spectacular to hear, and we are indebted to the producers at Vocalion for starting the process of re-releasing Mantovani's music on CD. Some of the CD's selections have not heard for decades, such as the hauntingly beautiful "Come Back to Sorrento," the stunning "Mattinata," the ever popular Dean Martin classic, "Return to Me": a heart tugging "Vissi D'Arte," and a very lively and clever arrangement of the "Bersagieri March," among many other Italian classics. As a special bonus, Vocalion added a scarce recording from 1969 Germany, never before issued in any format in the US, Japan or UK. Perhaps for the very first time, avid fans will hear Mantovani's distinctive strings playing many beautiful German melodies. To sum up, this two CD set is a glorious treat for those who can never get enough of the Mantovani sound, or who have difficulty finding the original master recordings on CD.
The meliorating music of Mantovani makes its marvelous return.
