Like re-discovering an old friend.......2007-06-26
Back in the day, I had *all* of Ms. Previn's LPs. I have very much enjoyed adding the CDs to my collection. Now if someone would just re-release the CD with "Did Jesus Have a Baby Sister?"......
As good as I remember.......2007-03-09
I used to listen to Dory years ago. I loved all her albums. Although this misses some of the songs I would have wanted, it was nice to hear them again.
I'll also glad to say that I am no longer into being depressed, so the lyrics are not as meaningful as they were in my days of adolescent angst.
uhhh.....yeah........2005-03-02
I am a fan of MANY types of music and have been for many years...SO....I understand that different types of music appeal to different types of people. Either Dory Previn is over my head or beneath me...i'm not sure which, lol! I do not see the appeal in her songs or her style...in fact...i find them quite irritating. MY advice to anyone who is thinking of buying any of her albums is to proceed with caution.....cause this stuff ain't for everybody! LOL But thats ok...to each his own! :)
An Amazing Piece of Music.......2003-05-06
I first purchased "Mythical Kings and Iguanas" in 1971 when it was first issued on the MediArts label. The only thing I knew about Dory, was that she was, or had been married to Andre Previn, and that she had written the lyrics to "Valley of the Dolls". With that, and the fact that I liked the look of the cover of the album, I purchased it! I never, in all my life, was more fascinated with an album than this one. And as of today, it remains probably, my favorite album of all time. She is a master story teller, with bruding, dark , haunting lyrics. Her images are so intense, you can not only visualize them, you can smell and taste them. Her statement on basic human conditions and emotions border on neurotic (I love writers like that), and yet you empathize with her. All tracks are amazing, but "Her Mothers Daughter", in my opinion is the stand out. It will send chills down your spin, it is so hauting and scary. Dory is probably the most prolific female songwriter of the '60's and '70's, and yet not widly recognized at all.
I was so wild about this album, I forced all my friends th hear it, they went out and purchased it, also. I went through 4 copies of this album, and my last copy is badly used. I think I was the only person, along with my friends, who actual bought his on vinyl way back when.
To hear it on CD is a joy, no cracks, scratches, and most of all,the quality is remarkable. The original master was terrible, so the original pressings sounded "cloudy". The CD format, I hear instruments, and vocal backings I never heard on vinyl.
If you love female songwriters, and you love to feel suicidal after listening to an artist---BUY THIS, it will put you off the deep edge!
"Such a Ride".......2003-04-21
I first bought these two albums back in the days of vinyl. I loved the album "Mythical Kings and Iguanas" back then. . . and I love the album just as much, if not more now on CD! Dory had the magic knack of combining emotional "picture painting poetry" with melody. When she sings of "Those Lemon Haired Ladies", you could actually "see" the emotional contest Dory knew she would lose in the end. . . yes, "the game is fixed" she sings because she knows it is.
Track after track hooks you into her music and experiences. To my mind, the most memorable and moving musical tour d'force is the track "Going Home (Mythical Kings and Iguanas)" She builds the song into a full gospel chorus crescendo (as her own vocal quiets and fades) into "Going home is such a ride. . . such a long and lonely ride"! Dory Previn has 'soul'! This track will leave you in a spiritual place you've never been before and yet you will feel quite at home in.
I loved this album years and years ago and was thrilled to find preserved pristine on CD. It's a great and timeless album. Thanks tyou Dory Previn wherever you are these days. . . you've made a lasting contribution to American and world music.

.
Of over 600 songs, Fischer-Dieskau and Gerald Moore realized over three-quarters: these are those. Gerald Moore was of course as important to this project as Fischer-Dieskau.
DGG's sound is excellent.
This set is a remarkable document of art.

Bluegrass fusion that rocks!!!!.......2005-07-31
A very nice secretary recommended Split Lip Rayfield to me several years ago, knowing as she did that I loved Irish and Cajun music, and then compounded her mistake by lending me her CD. She didn't get it back for two whole months, and the Greek Titans couldn't have beat it from me for love or money, not at least until I got my own copy delivered to my greedy, clasping hands from Amazon. The CD went straight into my car stereo and did not leave once, not once, for those two entire months. I simply listened to this one over and over and over again. For Christmas that year I bought many of my friends copies of this album, "In the Mud". That's how good this album is!!!! NO, you may not borrow my copy, I know I'll never get it back, but do buy it, buy it, you'll LOVE it. The sound is fresh, exciting, toe-tapping, heel-stomping and the lyrics are outrageously good, covering everything from welfare checks to murder in alternating hysterically funny to mesmerizingly grim songs that just make you hit replay for months and months. I can't recommend this one enough. It's five years later and I still have this CD in my six disc carousel (an upgrade from my one CD slot player) and I play it at least twice a month still.
Makes`ya wanta tap all twelve toes!.......2005-04-22
This sure ain`t your Pappy`s bluegrass music! That is, unless your Pappy is a one-eyed, twelve-toed, moonshine-drinkin`, mountain oyster-eatin`, inbred goat farmer from Eastern Kentucky. Manure-fueled grassabilly that takes old-fashioned tradition out behind the barn for a drink of rotgut liquor and a playful spank on the ass. Can`t beat this stuff with a stick! Even if you could, it would get right back up and beat`cha back! Excellent musicianship. Great wordplay. For fans of the Bad Livers, Foddershock, and the Drive-By-Truckers. Hell, I`d say it`s for fans of roots music in general, as long as they have an open mind and an open beer. Suggested listening environment: intermission music at a cockfight that has unlimited access to pork rinds, PBR, and horny no-teeth women (is there any other type of cockfight?).
wow! I can't keep still.......2000-10-11
I borrowed this CD from a friend, on his reccomendation, and am just amazed.
Traditional-ish sound and melodies, fast and furious, humorous lyrics, just a heck of a lot of fun. You would be hard put to keep still when listening to this one!
Kinda a cross of the Freight Hoppers (or other 1920's-ish bluegrass or pre-'grass) crossed with the Kruger Bros. and a little of Marley's Ghost, maybe. Lots of fun!
A must-have album/group!
Dwight Yoakam with a drinking problem and tatoos.......1999-08-27
This is a amazing follow up to the kansas natives debut self titled release, which is also a must have any any originality buff's collection. The songs move from ballads to good time strumming. Even some darkness thrown in. When you got a guy playing a ford gas tank strung with weedeater strings you cant go wrong.
Hard-hittin' bluegrass from deep in the heart of Kansas.......1999-08-26
Split Lip Rayfield shares members with Scroat Belly ~ another Kansas favorite. We ain't talking about your standard bluegrass here, though. They say that if you curled up all the corners of the US, the freaks roll down to Kansas. While there, they learn punk, they learn country, and they drink. And we all thank god for the musicians, for they keep our Kansas souls alive.
In Split Lip, we have the privilege of listening to an acoustic bass made out of a Ford Gas Tank and a 2x4. Add a guitar, a mandolin, and a banjo and out comes the sweetest sounds you'll ever drink whisky to.
See them live, and buy their CDs. They got kids to feed.

Customer Reviews:
a terrific compilation for beginners.......2006-02-07
I agree with P. Grupe-for classical music lovers, it is a let down to listen to cut tracks of well-performed classical greats, like Chopin's 1st piano concerto in this collection. Nonetheless, this is a terrific compilation for people beginning to get interested in classical music. This compilation is an eclectic mix of the familiar (Beethoven's moonlight sonata, Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini variation no. 18, Myer's Cavatina, Barber's "Adagio for Strings, etc.), the contemporary (Michael Nyman's The Promise, Horner's My Heart Will Go On), and the truly moving (Bach's Double Violin Concerto, Bruch's Violin Concerto, Schubert's String Quintet in C)-relatively obscure pieces usually left out in less inspired and mediocre classical music compilations. It is gratifying to see that opera music has not been left out. Get this cd if only for the Maria Callas tracks, Lucia Popp's performance of Strauss' Beim Schlafengehen, and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa's Addio del passato.
"Classical heartbreakers" broke my heart.......2004-06-27
I am an avid listener of classical music, and I purchased this CD expecting to get some of the best classical music ever composed. I guess I expected a bit much though. Although the recording is filled with high quality performances of fantastic pieces, I was disappointed to find that only about half of the pieces are contained in their entirety on this 2-disc set. Songs such as Rhapsody in Blue and Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata were not recorded in full for this album, which caught me off guard and bothered me quite a bit.
Anybody who is unfamiliar with classical music will appreciate this album. Since it features some of the most moving classical pieces ever written, it is sure to entrance listeners. And by not placing entire 10-minute pieces on the CDs, it will not run on and bore those unaccustomed to the length of most classical music. However, if you are already well-versed in classical music and can listen to entire symphonies with ease, I would advise against buying this album. I now feel a desire to go out again and find the full versions of some of these pieces, since I feel I was cheated by only getting introductions or short movements on most of the album. Guess I should have paid a little more attention to what I was buying.
A Fantastic Compilation.......2004-05-01
Most of the musical pieces in this compilation are from versions as they appear in various movies. This is Classical music from classic movies such as: Somewhere in Time, Schindler's List, English Patient, The Piano, Platoon, et al. But make no mistake; the music is what's really worth mentioning here.
The title says it all. It claims to have "the most moving Classical music of all time," and they certainly have a case, as it is chock full of the kind of emotional pieces that can easily bring you to tears. This double CD compilation with 37 passionately beautiful pieces is a steal at $16.99.
If you've ever recorded your favorite songs on to tape, or burned them on to a CD, you'll see that this compilation is exactly what EMI Records has done. It is like a greatest hits, volume 1, of poignant Classical music. Almost all of the musical pieces are classic favorites, though there are a few contemporary ones also.
I found the music on this CD powerful and moving as advertised, and I think that Classical music fans should truly enjoy it. It is well worth the price it's being sold for, and I highly recommend it.

Realmente o melhor.......2001-04-22

A Great Soundtrack For a Great Movie!.......2006-04-26
This is probably one of the most complete scores you will ever find for an item, and the songs are all well-written and unique from each other. I will review a few specific tracks:
1. Main Title-The Brave Little Toaster has one of the creepiest intros, panning through the dark woods to find an empty cabin full of seemingly lifeless appliences. This haunting track works very well with it.
3. Blanket's Dream-I'm not keen on them leaving in the dialogue here, as you don't get the whole fantasy scene unless you've seen it. Still, Lampy and Radio's amusing lines are here, which is good.
4. The Air Conditioner Blows-For anyone who was terrified of this scene as a kid, this frantic track does the whole thing justice, with a grim ending.
6. Again, the dialogue and sound effects are left in, but they actually help the humor in this track. Lampy's voice is awsome.
8. City of Light-This is my favorite of all the songs. It's a bright and optimistic ballad-ish song when the appliences set out. They're all good singers, even though Lampy speaks a few of his lines. Very catchy.
10. The Pond-This one has to be heard to be believed. It's sound effects of the pond create lovely music, and the highlight is the opera singing fish (don't ask).
11. Toaster's Dream-I just have to say, this is a really scary track to accompany the scene that probably scared me the most when I was younger. That clown...
19. It's a 'B' Movie-This is a spooky number, and will remind you of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Preformed by the junkshop appliences (and a bit by the core group), it's the first showstopper.
22. Into the City-A Beautiful instrumental version of City of Light.
23. Cutting Edge-A techno number sung by the mean appliences that replaced the old ones. It has great lyrics and sounds just like some commercials from that era.
25. Worthless-A disco style song belted out by the poor cars at the junkyard before they all meet their "deaths" at a trash compactor. Catchy and sad at the same time, and a favorite of many.
26. Finale-A seven minute long song. Ranges from hopeful to frantic to a happy ending.
27. End Title-A very happy song to end the soundtrack.
Buy it now. It's everything you've ever dreamed of on the edge...and more!

Customer Reviews:
interesting classical music collection..........2004-12-16
This is an interesting classical music collection that is as their personal favorites. My personal faves are by Manuel De Falla (selected by Steven Tyler), a Mozart piece (Keith Richards), Benjamin Britten (Paul McCartney) and Modest Mussorgsky (Trevor Rabin). It includes a 12 page booklet written by Boston DJ Carter Alan with quotes from each musician on why they choose what they did. The other musicians who picked their favorites include Bruce Hornsby, Elton John, Brian Wilson, Marianne Faithful, Michael Stipe, Bono and Frank Sinatra.
Fantastic Classical Compilation.......1999-12-24
This is one of the best classical compilations around - and these are the pieces that inspired other musicians. Rock musicians at that. Lots of good stuff here, including a heartrending rendition of Sposa son Disprezzata, sung by Cecilia Bartoli. Great fun.

Customer Reviews:
Morris is great\Brunnhilde is better here than on DVD.......2006-09-22
I am not a fan of the recent Behrens. Her voice, in the DVD of the ring cycle,( different from the CD's by several years!) is far drier than on disc. On disc, she is tolerable, even good most of the time, though as one reviewer so cleverly put it, Norman's Siegliende sounds like she could eat the Valkyries alive. I would give anything to switch the roles having Behrnes as Siegliende and Norman as Brunnhilde. Why couldnt the met think of that-the Valkyrie is a strong noble woman-Norman would be perfect-
The star of the show is James Morris' Wotan. His voice is like liquid gold, pure butter. OF all the Wotan's I have heard, his is the most effective, even moreso on the DVD set. Some may complain about his legato ladden singing, but this adds an immense beauty to the performance which truly makes you yearn for his every word. In the group I watched the whole cycle with, every time he sang, everyone shut up and was in awe of his performance. The only performance I believe is comparable is KNA's 56 Hotter. It is the only perforamcen by Hotter I think is successful, though his Solti Walkure Wotan may be the worst performance of disc. IT sounds like he is singing, or was recorded in a cave. Stray from that horrid performance. Also Karajan's is pretty good, one of the best. Barenboim;s is decent, tomlinson is strong with a great voice, but he tends to overemphasize certain phrases
For a wonderful comparison of what makes Morris great, I compared his lines in
"Der Alt Sturm' to Fricka regarding Siegliende and Siegmunde to
KNA, KRauss, Solti, Barenboim, Morris DVD, and CD and Haitink
Morris is the best.
Possibly the Best Die Walkure on disc.......2005-12-07
People have criticized James Levine for his plodding tempos in his Wagner conducting. However, I believe that his conducting is most true to Wagner's score. I personally think that this Walkure is the best on disc, exceeding the recordings made by Sir Georg Solti, Karl Bohm, Clemens Krauss, and to a certain extent, Herbert von Karajan. The clear, precise, yet transparent sounds he draws from the Met Orchestra is superb, and he displays the psychological drama of the characters very very well. The cast is top notch too, with Brunhildde being played by the very youthful sounding Hildegard Behrens in her prime. From the magnificent opening Hojotohos to her farewell with Wotan, none of the dramatic qualities of the part were missed by this gifted German soprano. You have here the feminine qualities perfected by Regine Crespin in her Karajan recording, plus the clarion high notes of Birgit Nilsson, and you have a great Valkyrie. Wotan is played by none other than James Morris, a singer whose Wotan I believe exceeds that of Hans Hotter in the Solti recording. This isn't a Wotan to fear, although that is one of the attributed the great American bass baritone can bring to the music. You also have Wotan the father, the lover, the compassionate head god who is distraught because he no longer has the universe under his control. A reference performance indeed. Gary Lakes plays Siegmund, a part bettered only by James King. His Sieglinde is Jessye Norman, and despite this talk about her overmannered Sieglinde, I would say that this is one of her greatest Wagner performances...very touching and vocally magnificent. Christa Ludwig plays Fricka, and although the voice is no longer what it was years ago for Solti, the drama she exudes in the text simply cuts through everything like a knife. This is a reference Fricka that must be held beside the great Fricka of Josephine Veasey in the Karajan recording. Finally, Hunding is played by none other than Kurt Moll. I wonder why this singer is cast so sparsely in other recordings when he can command some of the greatest Wagner performances on disc. His Gurnemanz, in my opinion, is the most wonderful in the discography. If he were to sing Wotan, I would be extremely thrilled with the results, but having James Morris in the role is more than I could ask for.
This truly is a great recording, and the sound is a miracle beyond miracles. Highly recommended!
Very, very good!!.......2005-03-10
Let me first say that I'm relatively new to the Opera world; therefore, my opinion may not hold much weight. However, I must say this: I love this recording!! Hildegard's voice is exquisite, Jessye Norman has such a commanding voice in her last passage of the Opera, and James Morris does an AWESOME Wotan. I remember after I had read a lot of negative commentary on this opera, I began to have a negative opinion about Norman's performance; then a friend took me to the side and showed me Norman's last passage in this opera (on the DVD), then every doubt I had about her was destroyed!
My ear is not trained enough for particulars (like diction and such) so I can't comment on that.
Basically, if you're looking for an overall good recording taken at a good tempo, this is it. I have heard the infallible Solti recording of this opera and I quickly grew bored with how slow he had taken some passages, but Nilsson has such a beatiful voice on that recording, too. So, it it just depends on what you want out of the Opera, I suppose
Anyways, as a budding opera listener, I highly reccommend this Opera.
Terrible disk for mp3 players.......2005-02-27
I like to listen to opera on my mp3 player. There are 4 CD's with different track information that make it extremely difficult to get them loaded in your mp3 library in the proper sequence. I have not yet been successful with either my Roxio or Music Match Jukebox software. The volume level is also very low compared to my other CD's. Very dissatisfied. Will probably buy another Die Walkure so I dont waist any more time. Age 66, former computer consultant.
As a total package, I'll take this one.......2004-12-04
Most people seem to dismiss this "Walkure" because Hildegard Behrens isn't Kirsten Flagstad, Gary Lakes isn't Lauritz Melchior, and James Levine isn't Hans Knappertsbusch. Maybe so. (Although remember the wise old adage: "The Golden Age of opera is always the one you just missed.") But Wagner, more than any other composer, is about the total experience - not just golden throats. And if the participants here aren't clear firsts in every category, their consistent and cumulative excellence make this an extremely competitive candidate.
Let's start with Behrens as everyone's favorite Valkyrie. It's true that she lacks power in the mid-range. But the crucial high notes are strong and shiny. And though they are not as magnificent as Birgit Nilsson's, the outstanding digital sound in which they are captured is a nice consolation. (Opera, like politics, is an art of compromises.)
And Gary Lakes as Siegmund? I'm sure this heresy will earn me a bushel of "unhelpful" votes from the moldy figs. But I have the legendary 1935 Vienna Melchior/Lehmann/List "Walkure" Act I, and I'll take Mr. Lakes, thank you. His instrument may not be the equal of Melchior's Stradivarius, but it's a sweet fiddle all the same (lotsa helden in his tenor) and he plays it far more affectingly, in my opinion.
I'm also prepared to stack up Jessye Norman's almost dementedly passionate Sieglinde against any other essayer of the role. As the mother of the World's Greatest Hero, she ought not to be sung as a swooning Bavarian wildflower. With La Norman's lashing torrents of vocal power, when the character longs to have her shame avenged, you'll know she means it. And when she climactically calls her brother by his true name, you'll want a cigarette afterwards.
If there is a better performance of Hunding than Kurt Moll's, seething with menace, let it be brought forward. I find James Levine an outstanding Wagner conductor - equally adept with the thunderous "Ride of the Valkyries" and the meltingly tender string playing at the end of Act III. And the recorded sound is demonstration class - if you like that sort of thing.
There will always be Solti die-hards and with Birgit Nilsson in his arsenal you can't blame them. But this will be my "Walkure" of choice from now on.
