This may sound familiar: I'm Yours is a country album by a beautiful woman with a nice voice. Yawn? No doubt. But Linda Davis's debut is not nearly the slice of Nashville fast food that such a description implies. A Grammy Award-winning singer (Best Country Vocal Collaboration with Reba McEntire for "Does He Love You," 1994), Davis uses her quivering, Parton-like voice and a fighting spirit to good emotional effect, especially on genuine moments like the evil-boss-minded "Company Time" and the distant father story, "In Pictures." A twang-friendly album that rocks better than it ballads (think heartland rock à la John Mellencamp), I'm Yours is a near-miss, hampered only by the too-frequent schmaltz and gloss requisite in the country mainstream. --Neal Weiss

5 out of 5 stars One of the most distinctive voices in popular music.......2004-05-14

Billy Eckstine was legendary. He is one of those performers I wish I could have seen in person. His distinctive baritone voice made anything he sang extraordinary. This 2 CD set is one of the most well thought out and enjoyable collections I own. Billy Eckstine recorded for M-G-M between 1947 and 1954. Here you will find the original recordings of many of Billy's biggest solo hits as well as more jazz oriented tunes backed by Woody Herman's and George Shearing's groups. But I prefer the ballads, particularly 1950's "My Foolish Heart" and his signature song "I Apologize". Perhaps my favorite tune on the entire set is the final one. "Passing Strangers" is a duet he recorded with Sarah Vaughn back in 1957. This one will literally send chills up and down your spine. It is an extraordinary recording! There are 42 tracks in this collection and over two hours of recorded bliss. This is a great collection to "crash" with. The 24 page booklet is one of the best I've seen with extensive biographical information, rare photos and a short discography. This is a collection of timeless classics that you can enjoy for a lifetime. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A master voice of his time.......2003-08-24

Being only 17, my father introduced me to Billy Ecksitne, and wow! He has such an amazing voice, I hear it goes for three octaves! Everything I have is yours, Foosl rush in, Blue Moon are all beautiful ballads, MrB's Blues is a bit of a bebop big band track, Temptaiton has quite an avante-garde melody, Somehow and bewildered feature beautiful backing singingadn are forties type ballads. Caravan is a very unusual song, almost Arabian in parts, Body and soul and my foolish heart are straight forward ballads but have such great melodies, the foru tracks with Sarah Vaughan are at times unusual but often ballads. I wanna be loved, you've got me crying again and I've never been in love before are like My foolish heart, soft and melodious but then comes the big hit, I appologise, such a well sung, emotional ballad. Then there's foru Jazz songs, As long as I live, I left my hat in Haiti, Here comes the blues and life is just a bowl of cherries. Woody herman sings with him on that last one, Then there's two ballads, Wonder why and I'm a fool to want you. Takign a chance on love and You're driving me crazy are cool jazz, Early autumn is a fantastic ballad and Tenderly-April in paris are easy, listening jazz, a bit gloomy in some tracks, Eckstines' vocals impeccable. Coquette is a cheery forties ballad as is the follow up and then there's two blues/jazz songs in How High the Moon and St.Louis blues, followed by two beautiful ballads, don't get around much anymore and lost inloveliness the album is concluded by Passing strangers, a beautiful, emotion ballad with Sarah Vaughan. Not only is Eckstine superb but the people backing him, Hugo Winterhalter, Russ Case, Pete Rugolo, Woody Herman, George Shearign quintet, the Bobby tucker quartet, Lou bring, Nelson Riddle, The metronome all stars [featuing Teddy Wilson and Lester Young!] and Hal Mooney, relive [or imagine] the fifties with not only one of the best singer of modern music history, bt also a good lot of badn leaders and instrumentalists from the period too!

5 out of 5 stars I've known of Billy for years.......2003-07-16

When I was a pre-teen (1943 to 1955) my mother listened to Billy Eckstine (and others) regularly and I enjoyed his music from the begining. I never thought I could get collections of his music again until I just did a search in his name and found so much of his music had been copied onto present day media. I now can relive all the nostalga that his voice elicits. No one had or has a voice like Billy Eckstine's.

5 out of 5 stars It makes me feel young again.......2002-08-25

The first time I heard Billy Eckstine in person was in about 1950 in Boston at the RKO theatre. I had an album clutched in my arms just bought next door with most of these songs on it, not all. I didn't have the nerve to go backstage for an autograph on it at the age of 19, but now I can have his songs on CD, not that pretty used up 78 rpm which I treasure, but doesn't sound like a CD. He is getting the credit today for what he should have back then. Besides which he was sooo handsome. I adore Sinatra, but Billy is right up there. Bigger voice, softer personality, good jazz. Too bad it isn't on cassette for my car.

5 out of 5 stars The Incredible Mr. B.......2001-08-23

What an unbeleivable voice. I first heard Billy Eckstine on a west coast all-stars tape. The two song i heard him perform are part of this collection,How High the Moon? Parts 1 & 2 and St. Louis Blues, Pt. 1 & 2. From this I decided I needed to find out what more work he did. When i found this collection i knew i had a new favorite Jazz vocalist. Billy has a style as well as a voice like no one else. He is the kind of guy you imagine women just swooning at his feet when he says hello. That voice, its incredible. Songs like My foolish heart and tenderly are just perfect for his vocal stylings and just lend themselves to become some of his best work. If you don't have this CD, you need to get it because its a must have.

4 out of 5 stars Praising Don and Seeking Help.......2005-01-06

Let me agree with Henry Puccinelli who has raised his voice in praise of this great singer. However this is more of a plea for assistance. I have been trying in vein to obtain a track listing of this potentially great CD. If you Henry, or any other person who reads this, has this information please share it in the form of a review. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars THE LAST OF THE BIG BAND CROONERS.......2005-01-04

I KNEW DON CORNELL AND CONSIDER HIM A PERSONAL FRIEND AS I WENT ON A COSTA CARIBBEAN CRUISE IN 2000 WITH HIM AND HIS WIFE, IRIS.
WE MET 10 YEARS AGO WHEN HE PERFORMED IN CONCERT IN SANTA ROSA.
HIS VOICE NEVER FALTERED AS HE SANG AT 80 YEARS OF AGE THE SAME IF NOT BETTER THAN IN THE 1940s&50s. THE ONLY FAULT ON THIS CD IS THAT THE SONGS ARE NOT IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER AS YOU COULD HEAR HIS VOICE AND STYLING IMPROVE WITH AGE. WE LOST A GREAT SINGER WHEN HE PASSED AWAY IN FEB 2004 AT AGE 84, AND HE WAS THE LAST OF THE GREAT BIG BAND SINGERS EQUAL TO SUCH TALENTS AS
CROSBY,SINATRA,COMO,&HAYMES. YOU CAN BUY MORE CDs BY DON ON HIS WEB SITE www.doncornell.com. ENJOY ALL HIS SONGS!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Rod Stewart.......2005-10-15

This is very much like the 'old' Rod Stewart, classic vocals complimented by the brilliant guitars of Jim Cregan.

Pure rock at it's best.

4 out of 5 stars Rod enters the 80's on top!.......2005-01-25

Only recently did I start buying some of Rod Stewart's full-length albums. I always liked alot of his 70's and 80's hits, but wanted a deeper look at some of his material of the era.

This is just about the perfect height of Rod's career. It's mostly upbeat and rocking, but with an 80's pop sound, and remnants of his disco era left (this was 1981--not long after) yet before he descended into adult contemporary hell around (and especially after) 1991.

1. The title track charges in with the energy of rockers like "Hot Legs" and the slight disco feel of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy." It's very 80's sounding (that's a good thing!), with an electronic, hard-edged new wave beat. In fact, it could almost pass as hard rock.

2. How Long -- Rod turns out a great cover of the already great Four Tops song. This is more of a mid-tempo, 80's pop/rock/R&B sounding variation. I won't quite say it outdoes the original, but it's pretty close.

3. Tora Tora Tora -- Probably the hardest rocker on the album. It sounds alot like a rowdy-type party song he could've done with the Faces 10-15 years before, just with a slight 80's feel to it.

4. Tear it Up -- The upbeat party rock continues here, with this very classic/oldies-rock-inspired tune with an accoustic piano intro. In fact, the guitar riff strongly recalls "Johnny B. Goode."

5. Only A Boy -- Sounds like it could've been autobiographical, about Rod's younger days and his beginnings in rock n' roll. Stylistically, it's a mid tempo pop/rock number with a slight Scottish ballad tinge.

6. Just Like A Woman -- The second cover song here, this time of a Bob Dylan tune. Done in a somewhat ballad style, it's my least favorite song, but still not bad.

7. Jealous -- Another song that kinda lends itself to the early 80's, with traces of Rod's disco sound leftover. Mid to fast tempo rock that sounds alot like the Stones' "Miss You" (especially in the guitar riff).

8. Sonny -- The first of two softer ballads here, this one the superior of them both. Starting off with synth-styled keyboards reminding me of Whitney Houston's "Saving All My Love for You" and ascending to a near-mid tempo toward the middle of the song.

9. Young Turks -- Ahh, the big hit that I love! The story of two teen lovers, Patty & Billy, who run away from home together. Rod tells it from a third person, but it seems to be more from their POV.

If you were to read the lyrics without hearing the music, you could easily think it was a country song. Not to scare y'all away, though, it's really a new wave-y pop/arena rock song, basically like a slightly toned-down version of the title track.

10. Never Give Up on a Dream -- The inspirational, touching, semi upbeat piano/pop ballad here, about (and dedicated to the memory of) runner Terry Fox, who died of cancer around the time this album was recorded.

I recently also found out that he had an album after this, BODY WISHES in 1983 (I always used to think 1984's CAMOUFLAGE was the follow-up!), which, from the two hits I've heard, keeps a pretty similar style.

5 out of 5 stars Rod Stewart's Last Great One For Some Time.......2004-12-21

TONIGHT I'M YOURS was Rod Stewart's artistic comeback after the disposable disco sounds of BLONDES HAVE MORE FUN and FOOLISH BEHAVIOUR. Unfortunately, it was also his last good studio album until OUT OF ORDER, and his last great one until the 90s albums VAGABOND HEART, UNPLUGGED...AND SEATED, SPANNER IN THE WORKS, and WHEN WE WERE THE NEW BOYS. The opening title track and "Young Turks" show him applying his soulful pipes to great effect over electronic backing, while his version of Ace's "How Long" cuts the great original to shreds. The rockers "Tora Tora (Out With The Boys)" and "Tear It Up", plus the gospel-toned inspirational ballad "Never Give Up On A Dream" show his Memphis-Chicago-Texas-St. Louis-Muscle Shoals-Detroit-New Orleans-Kansas City blues/R&B/soul/rock & roll influences and "Only A Boy" reveals his roots in British Isles folk music. This album shows that he still had the ability, even after putting out crass disco pap, to record soulful, emotionally naked albums for the rest of his career. Unfortunately, he didn't; after a hot 1982 live album, he recorded the pieces of garbage BODY WISHES, CAMOUFLAGE, and ROD STEWART, with only his version of "People Get Ready", on Jeff Beck's FLASH, standing out among the vapid pop with which he so sabotaged his credit rating that it took VAGABOND HEART, with its highly inspirational rocker "Moment Of Glory", to truly reclaim himself and his career.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2002-11-14

It's a great album for someone that likes rod stewart.
And the track tonight im yours is worth the price alone.

3 out of 5 stars Rod's Yours.......2001-04-05

Tonight I'm Yours was Rod Stewart's first album of the 80's and accordingly it is heavily drenched in synthesizer sounds. The album will follow a trend of most of his 80's albums, a few very good songs (usually the singles) and alot of filler. The title track is a bouncy, catchy song that is plain old fun and "Young Turks" was a big hit (peaking at number 5) and is a little edgier that the title track, but it is also immensely catchy. His cover of Bob Dylan's "Just Like A Woman" is good and "Never Give Up On A Dream" is very inspirational and a beautiful track. The rest of the album doesn't offer much.

4 out of 5 stars Davis is a country diva.......2007-06-18

This album is a strong 4 stars. I was caught between 4 and 5 and went with 4 just because I didn't quite feel it enough for 5, which is an "extra special" ranking. This album is a very good combination of the good songs from Linda's 2 albums. Linda has a great voice with a Texas accent perfect for this music. She sings with feeling and passion. The lyrics of the songs are meaningful. Good tunes:

Love Story in the Making
Company Time - uptempo number about a woman being overwhelmed
I Wanna Remember This - very high spirited
I Took the Torch Out of His Old Flame
What Do I Know - strong beat
Some Things are Meant to Be

Overall, a very good CD for fans of female country singers. Don't know why Linda didn't get bigger. She had the voice and the looks

5 out of 5 stars Deserves more recognition.......2006-03-23

I highly recommend this album to everyone. Linda Davis has a fabulous voice and a heart of gold. She picks some great songs to record and does an awesome job on them. Linda often doesn't get the recognition she deserves. Don't miss out on a great album, great songs, and a fabulous singer/entertainer. Give Linda a chance and she will win you over quickly.

5 out of 5 stars Ambitious Effort.......2004-05-15

Linda Davis sang background vocals for Reba McEntire and has often sang duets with her. On I'M YOURS, a collection of old songs and new, she proves why she should be as big a star as Reba. Linda has a great country voice, and an ear for great songs. The title track was a mild hit in 1998, it's a great ballad. Many of her songs have great stories, such as "Love Didn't Do It", or "Love Story In The Making". "Three Way Tie" is an excellent country ballad about a love triangle. "What Do I Know" is another excellent ballad, and "In Pictures" is very moving about a man who has to watch his kids be raised...through pictures. "I Wanna Remember This" is a fun uptempo song, and "Some Things Are Meant To Be" is an older hit that still sounds great. Overall a strong set of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Reba's backing singer.......2004-04-27

Linda arrived in Nashville in the early eighties and had three minor country hits as one half of the duo Skip and Linda. Eventually, she secured a recording contract with Capitol and recorded two solo albums (In a different light, Linda Davis) before moving to Arista where she also recorded two solo albums (Shoot for the moon, Some things are meant to be). Linda also became a part of Reba McEntire's tour, becoming her main backing singer. They recorded a duet, Does he love you, which became a country number one hit. This helped gain greater recognition for Linda but, despite further duets with Reba (If I could live your life, Face to face) and her excellent solo recordings, Linda never made the big time on her own merit. Linda left Arista and moved to Dream works. This album actually only includes seven new recordings, the other seven being licensed from Capitol and Arista.

The Capitol and Arista recordings show that, whatever the reasons for Linda's lack of success, the songs were not the problem. She recorded In pictures in 1994 - it was later recorded by Alabama who had a number one country hit with it. Linda was also first (in 1995) to record What do I know, later a country hit for Ricochet. Linda had her only top ten country hit as a solo singer with Some things are meant to be. Company time is a brilliant song about the problems that can arise at work when male bosses get interested in female employees. Love didn't do it is another wonderful song.

The songs recorded for Dream works are also excellent especially the title track and I took the torch out of his old flame. Make it through, a duet with Randy Travis, was featured on the Prince of Egypt Nashville soundtrack.

Despite the quality of Linda's music, stardom eluded her. As I write this, there have been no more solo albums from Linda but she continues to tour with Reba. The one disappointment is that none of the Reba duets are included here. We could have expected to get If I could live your life, which originally appeared on one of Linda's Arista albums (Some things are meant to be) and which isn't available anywhere else. Despite that omission, this is an excellent showcase for Linda's talent. It's not difficult to understand why Reba employs her as a backing singer.

5 out of 5 stars Im Yours - Overlooked.......2001-10-05

Linda Davis, best-known for her Grammy-winning duet with Reba McEntire, "Does He Love You," signed to DreamWorks in 1998 and was given almost no timeto complete her album. That's why I'M YOURS features seven previously released songs, as well as seven new ones. In effect, IM YOURS serves as a kind of "audio scrapbook" of Davis' career, revealing her to be an immensely talented singer whose past work has been cruelly overlooked. In fact, two of the tracks here, "In Pictures" and "What Do I Know," went on to become hits for Alabama and Ricochet respectively, proving that Davis knows how to pick a song.

Her first top 10 single, "Some Things Are Meantto Be," still sounds great, while "Company Time" and "Three Way Tie" are shoulda-been-hits. The new material ranges from the uptempo title track, to the sassy "I Took the Torch Out of His Old Flame," to "From the Inside Out," a mediation on the meaning of true love. There's also a duet with Randy Travis, "Make It Through," originally recorded for the PRINCE OF EGYPT soundtrack. Travis' deeper-than-deep voice provides an interesting contrast with Davis' soprano on this unique song inspired by the story ofMoses.

5 out of 5 stars A great singer.......2003-02-19

Why this great singer is not more popular - well, I predict that she will become the great voice of our great American art form - the song.

4 out of 5 stars Pop classics from one of the great divas.......2001-08-25

In the last 20 years or so, Maureen McGovern has concentrated on recording jazz albums and revisiting, as she calls it, "The Great American Songbook": the standards from the great composers of the first half of the 20th century. For those who may have not followed her career very closely, she'll always be viewed as the "Disaster Theme Queen" (her term, not mine). Beginning with her only #1 hit and signature song, 1972's "The Morning After" from "The Poseidon Adventure," her hits (almost all ballads) seemed to only come from films and TV: "We May Never Love Like This Again" from "The Towering Inferno" (1974)--both "Morning" and "Never" would receive the Oscar those years for Best Original Song; the exquisite "Can You Read My Mind?", from the late Christopher Reeve's original "Superman" from 1978, and I remain dumbfounded how that hauntingly beautiful song never even received an Oscar nomination for Best Song!; and her Top 20 disco hit from 1979, "Different Worlds," from ABC's short-lived (two seasons) TV series "Angie."

"Baby, I'm Yours," from 1992, is a love song in the form of a CD from Maureen to her favorite hits from her youth and is the most "pop"-sounding album she's probably recorded in the last two decades. Blessed with a clear, soaring soprano of an innumerable-octave range, McGovern has been justifiably referred to as The Stradivarius Voice. It's not a misnomer; her voice is truly that gifted.

The title cut is a sultry, rhythmic reworking of the Barbara Lewis classic. "Sincerely," "It's All in the Game," and "You Belong to Me" are faithful and delightful interpretations of the original '50s recordings by The McGuire Sisters, Tommy Edwards, and Jo Stafford, respectively. McGovern's love for The Beatles is obvious in this collection, which includes "I Will" (a sweet, bright reading) and a sad, almost wistful medley of "Things We Said Today" and "For No One."

Legendary songwriting team Burt Bacharach and Hal David are very well represented here as well, as McGovern provides us with "Are You There (With Another Girl)?", which opens the album, along with "Blue on Blue" (who knew this Bobby Vinton ditty was written by Bacharach?) and "Anyone Who Had a Heart," which was a hit in the U.S. by Dionne Warwick and in the U.K. by Dusty Springfield.

And speaking of Dusty, the best cut on this album by far is her powerful, exceptional reading of Springfield's classic "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me." This recording is worth the price of the album alone. McGovern's own liner notes show that she was obviously a big fan of Springfield, and her superb reworking of Dusty's smash is a glowing testimonial indeed. The early Paul Anka standard "Put Your Head on My Shoulder" is transformed into a sexy, kittenish tease that works a lot better for this listener than Anka's original version; sorry, Paul.

Having passed the age of 50 and nearing three decades of recorded music, Maureen McGovern is known today for her jazz and big-band concerts, frequent solo recordings with pianist Mike Renzi, and performances on and tireless work for the annual Jerry Lewis Labor Day MDA Telethons. Fully-orchestrated pop albums are few and far between for this phenomenal vocalist, so this one is an absolute must for the discerning listener who appreciates a singular talent that could come from nowhere but Above. Lots of fun filled with lots of memories.

Rating: **** (out of 5)...Updated from original review, 26 Sept 06--BOB BOURBEAU

5 out of 5 stars absolutely beautiful.......2001-02-22

McGovern has always had a beautiful voice, but she outdoes herself with this soulful set. All the songs here are sung an octave higher than I had heard her sing before, and it was almost like hearing a completely new singer. My personal favorites are "Blue on Blue" and "You Belong to Me", the best renditions I've ever heard of either classic. This disc is a keeper for fifties baby boomers who grew up with these songs and loved them.

1 out of 5 stars Lay me back and drill my teeth... please!.......2000-07-18

I have always been a fan of Maureen's since I heard her sing in person 25, or so, years ago. Unfortunately, that time period seems to be exactly where these unimaginitive, Karoke-styled arrangements have been lifted from. Her voice is still there; untouched yet more disappointingly, unchallanged. This album lacked imagination, and strong presentation necessary to make it at best, interesting. Bottom line, poor arrangements, weak vocals and looser music direction.

5 out of 5 stars One of Her Greatest!.......1999-06-18

If you like Maureen McGovern, then this is the one for you. She takes some of the old rock 'n' roll and jazzy hits from the 60s and 50s and turns them into something great. " I Will" is just beautiful, and "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" is the best of the cd. Of course "Baby I'm Yours" is good as well as "Sincerely". I recomend this to any one!

Don't hesitate- get it.Track 2 is the best thing I have heard this year.
She is a glorious singer , inventive and full of life. The group is very sympathetic - a hand-picked ensemble which compliments her style in the best way possible.I saw her once towards the end and I'm very sorry that I can't see her again. But great records like this almost compensate for that.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but Betty has better.......2005-12-13

I recently purchased this album as a Christmas gift for my sister along with "Feed the Fire" and the '55-'69 album with Ray Charles. This is definitely the weakest of the three, probably due to Betty's age when it was recorded. Her vibrato flattens all the sustained notes, which sounds cool at first, but grates a bit after about the third track. There are some amazing variations, and Betty's vocal prowess certainly shows through, but I recommend an earlier album if you aren't a hard-core, forgiving fan.

      5 out of 5 stars Beyond style.......2004-03-18

This album came out in 1996. It's Betty Carter's last album before she died in 1998. It's wonderful! Wouldn't it be great to hear someone play a brass or wind instrument that could enunciate words? That's Betty Carter singing. She is backed by the very best musicians! This is just music, telepathic, beyond style.

      5 out of 5 stars Haunting.......2003-08-19

I saw Betty Carter perform the title track, "I'm Yours, You're Mine" on January 23, 1998 on a whim. The next day I rushed to buy the album.

The song is worth the price of the album alone. Its slow steady beat and her sonorous voice takes the listener to a place where a lover yearns--and you're not sure if its from happiness, longing, passion. But you know that its full of emotion. You don't realize Ms. Carter isn't singing in words, until she utters the songs only phrases at the end--"We haven't met since then. Gee but its nice to see you again."

I wish all could have seen her that night. Her presence on stage, and her movement, were as regal as the performance on this album. Ms. Carter died later that year. And I can't help but think how blessed I am that I got to see one of her last performances.

While you can't see Ms. Carter live, you can buy her last album recorded in her life. Check it out. The title track is worth the price alone.

      5 out of 5 stars beautiful betty.......2000-12-27

I heard the title track late one night on the one local jazz station. I didn't know who the artist was and stayed sharp so I could be sure to hear the dj back-announce the song. I bought the CD the next day.

If you ever find yourself looking for a definition of beauty or if you feel like your world's become a bit cold and ugly, put on this album. You will feel better. I don't mean you'll feel the dopey, KennyG, I-ate-too-much-candy type of vibe. I mean you'll hear music that was made by a woman who has probably been through hell but still has the ability to see the beauty of being alive and to express that with her voice.

The title song alone is worth the price of the CD but, fortunately, the rest of the music is very good. Thanks, Betty.

Mizz Wheeler is not just your round the way singer. This girl can saaaaang! I'm Yours Tonight proves that she has the chops to pull it off. Doing background sessions for some of the most top singers such as Glenn Jones, Cindy Mizelle, Genobia Geter, Najee, Billy Ocean, Michael Bolton- just to name a few- showcases her as an outstanding singer. From If You Need Someone to the remake of Peabo Bryson's "Can You Stop The Rain" are all dime pieces. Asking her old friends such as Cindy Mizelle, Najee, Paulette McWilliams, James "D-Train" Williams to her husband, Will Downing to help her create an album of such stupendous material. Though not first rate, but stupendous nonetheless. She showed us her range, depth and beauty of her voice. If you want a real diva to spoon up some good vibes, get this! Grade: A+
