Great Gonzos

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
It's ironic that the man who made his reputation by writing "Mr. Bojangles," one of the most enduring and oft-covered tunes of the late 20th century, succeeded in his career as a performer by singing the works of others, but that's the case. Walker has always been a fine judge of material, and over the years, picked up on some great stuff, such as Billy Joe Shaver's "Old Five and Dimers Like Me," Guy Clark's "Desperados Waiting for the Train" and "L.A. Freeway," Gary Nunn's "London Homesick Blues," Ray Wiley Hubbard's "Up Against the Wall Redneck," and Rusty Weir's "Don't It Make You Wanna Dance." This set gathers those remarkable cuts together with some of Walker's own songs, such as the party anthem "Sangria Wine," "Railroad Lady" (written with Jimmy Buffett), and, of course, "Bojangles." Great Gonzos gives you the flavor and the laid-back aesthetic of Jerry Jeff's seminal work of the '70s. There's more to the story, but this is where it all began. --Daniel Durchholz

In Germany how do you say we have our superior technology, our superior culture. In Germany persons such as Ted Nugent are revered as gods. However this album plunged me into misery for lack of energy and brought about tremendous malaise. You see in Germany that is our highest pleasure. Therefore I award this CD the best German award of CD. We must support those who delight in violence and also dirt and filth. In West Berlin we with rim glasses of ridiculously cosmopolitan design do regard Nugent with derision which for us is affection, combined with humiliation which we also love.

5 out of 5 stars Underrated.......2006-10-17

All these people with reviews that say Ted is not that good are so stupid i can't stand it. Complete fools. All of them. They don't know good muisc if it smacked them right in the face.
Ted Nugent is one of the most underrrated guitarist of all time. He can flat out play. Not only that he puts on one of the coolest shows of all time. He did it in the 70s and still rocks your socks off today. I saw him over the summer at Moondance Jam and he was amazing.
This showcases some of Ted's best songs. This album rocks for anyone who likes and appreciates good hard rocking.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of the Nuge's best work.......2006-07-31

While many of today's music fans only know Ted Nugent for his pro-hunting stance and his lack of subtlety, Great Gonzos: The Best of Ted Nugent, shows the man in his best setting as an excellent guitarist who wrote several hard rock classics. This compilation covers Ted in his peak years from 1975 through 1980 when he was selling millions of records and, as Henry Rollins once stated, blowing audiences into little pieces. The excellent rockers "Just What the Doctor Ordered" and "Motor City Madhouse", along with one of the great long tracks of the classic rock era, "Stranglehold", are from Ted's self-titled debut album. "Free for All" and "Dog Eat Dog" are the best tracks from his Free for All release. His most popular album, Cat Scratch Fever, is represented by the essential title track, which like Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water", is instantly identified by its opening guitar riff, and the melodic instrumental "Homebound." The tracks "Yank Me, Crank Me", "Baby Please Don't Go", and "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" are from the Double Live Gonzo release and show Ted's stellar reputation as a live performer. "Paralyzed", originally released on State of Shock, and "Wango Tango", which appeared on Scream Dream, are the best tracks from those albums. The remastered version also features the strong rocker "Give Me A Little", which actually sounds it was recorded recently, since its sound is similar to that of his latest release, Craveman. While this is a very good representation of his peak, it feels incomplete as several great rockers such as the minor hit single "Hey Baby", the underrated melodic rocker "A Thousand Knives", and the live version of "Stormtroopin'", which has an absolutely wicked solo from the Nuge that must be heard to be believed, are not featured. Also worth noting is there are no tracks from the decent Weekend Warriors album. While not definitive, Great Gonzos hits most of the high points of Ted Nugent's peak and is a good place for newcomers to start.

4 out of 5 stars URBANE, URBAN COWBOY.......2006-06-22

Sometimes you just need some old-fashioned rock and rolling, comboy style. That is the roots too. If you, like I do, every once in a while need to hear about whiskey bars, fly-by-night hotels, pool playing hustlers, sad-eyed gals, flossies, no-name susies, broken-down cowboys, low down hotels nighttimes smells, guys saying what the hell at the last chance motel you have come to the right address. Listen on.

5 out of 5 stars Jerry Jeff Walker - The Great Gonzos CD.......2000-06-28

This is the album that started it all for me. This was the first Texas artist I was ever exposed to, and this is the first Texas Music album I ever bought. Now I am a bona-fide "up-against-the-wall" Texas Music NUT! I had to buy this CD because I wore the tape out! This album is not only a staple in a JJW collection, but a must-have in any Texas music collection.

4 out of 5 stars The most important part of any Jerry Jeff Walker collection........1999-06-16

Any red-blooded Texan ( or those who want to be ) knows the words to "Redneck Mother" and the following "London Homesick Blues". Add to that the classic "Mr. Bojangles" and you have the definitive JJW album. The recording quality is superior to many other JJW offerings, but still has the "ice-house sound" that comes from the juke box at 1:30 am. This is the one...The cover should hang in a place of honor in the Capitol in Austin, with a map below giving directions to Terlingua.

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars--classic hard rock.......2002-10-13

Ted Nugent is a unique individual, to say the least. While in more recent years he has become more well-known for his hunting prowess and conservative political views, he originally was simply known as the "Motor City Madman" with his unique brand of attitude-laced hard rock. This "best of" collection highlighting the earliest and most famous years of his career is a worthy entry in my classic/hard rock collection.

"Cat Scratch Fever" is perhaps Ted's best known song, an over-the-top raunch rocker of sorts that was his only top 40 song (#30). "Free For All" and "Motor City Madhouse" are hard-driving rock classics. "Stranglehold" is one of Ted's best-known (and best) songs, an 8-minute-plus epic. "Wango Tango" is just downright odd--nothing remotely pop about this song. The live track and closer on this collection "Wang Dang Sweet Poontang" is Ted at his rocking and raunchy best. Check out the length of the guitar solo in the middle of this track.

For sure, Ted has released a lot of material over the years, and a 10-track collection couldn't possibly due his career full justice. Nonetheless, this is a very worthwhile collection to get for a decent summary of a lot of the most noteworthy songs of Ted in his prime. While Ted himself is not a great singer (listen to the all-time great super group Damn Yankees to hear both his amazing guitar work and melodic vocals), his music is fun and hard rocking. Definitely an enjoyable listen still after all these years.

5 out of 5 stars TED'S THE MAN.......1999-05-07

All these new bands like korn and limp bizkit don't come close to the motor city madman.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome, a must for any rock-n-roll or heavy guitar fan!!.......1999-04-12

The "Whackmaster Ted" rocks on stage and off, from someone who has followed his career for years. A must-have addition to any complete music showcase. Keep it up Ted, If they don't like it, put em in the "Stranglehold" baby!

5 out of 5 stars An american hero captured on CD.......1999-01-04

5 stars is not enough for the "Motor City Madman" This album with its great guitar playing and pure intensity should have 6 stars. Its a must for the "TRUE" rock and roll collector!

5 out of 5 stars A true must for a classic rock collection.......1998-11-26

The best of the Motor City Madman captured on one CD. Any collection of classic R&R must include this one.
