Suzanne Thomas's voice is remarkable within bluegrass, where for 30 years she's been central to bands like the Dry Branch Fire Squad and the Hotmud Family. She possesses no crystalline soprano or pretty soaring tone nor belting power exactly. Thomas has something else: an ache all around the edges, a tactile sense of emotion, the warmth and tremble marking depth of human feeling. Backing by contemporary bluegrassers IIIrd Tyme Out, the Lonesome River Band, the Seldom Scene, and the Dry Branch Fire Squad never overwhelms Thomas's delivery, which is most moving on the melancholy title track--an ode to Stephen Foster--and Robin and Linda Williams's "Leaving This Land." Her torchy take on "Miss the Mississippi and You" closes Thomas's solo debut, easily one of the year's best bluegrass offerings. --Roy Francis Kasten

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Album Description

An epic film score receives epic treatment with The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings. Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Breathtaking and majestic, the 2001 Oscar and Grammy winning score compsted by Howard Shore also includes Enya's Oscar nominated "May It Be." For fans of any of The Lord of the Rings films, the Fellowship of the Ring/Complete Recordings is an essential experience.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-15

I picked up this set because I am both a LOTR fan, movies and books and I need music to help me work. There are some tracks that I skipped over, like the short little ditties in the bar, but many of the songs, such as the Elvish chants are easy to get lost in - its just too bad they don't last longer. The packaging really is well done, though the DVD disc was loose when I received it in the mail, but unharmed. I will have to wait until the price on the second set comes down a little more, but I can't wait for ROTK.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-06-12

This is by far the editon to get if you loved the lord of the rings soundtrack. It has every song on it from the extended edition. and the DVD-A version is very nice.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Music tracks from Movie.......2007-05-03

Brings the movie back as you listen to the full version of the track.

3 out of 5 stars Complete?.......2007-04-07

This CD collection is wonderful; it has much of the material from the movie that was only included in the extended edition DVD, but it is far from complete. While it does have the complete version of "The Passing of the Elves" and two versions of "The Road Goes Ever On", many of the songs are highly incomplete and inferior to the originals. "Aniron," the theme for Aragorn and Arwen performed by Enya, is incomplete and the lyrics are hard to match to what is being sung. The sound quality for this song is even worse on the accompanying DVD, which is supposed to have all of the music in "superior sound". The song "Prophecy" is reduced to two barely-audible lines and "May It Be" is shortened and different than the original. $60 for this when there are more complete songs on the original soundtrack is ridiculous.

3 out of 5 stars Great Collection, Poor Packaging.......2007-04-03

I realy can't add to what others have said about this set, the music is simply the best LOTR soundtrack collection out there! It is all here, and the contents of this set will make any LOTR fan happy and the music DVD is a great one disc addition if you want to hear the entire score in one sitting (to which I have done a number of times already).
My only complaint is the somewhat flimsy cardboard box that houses the contents of this musical treasure. Mine came damaged, and considering the price, I expected better packaging. This is a minor quabble on my part and NO, I havent returned it due to the fact that the music itself Is what I truly treasure, It just would have been nicer to have recieved it undamaged.

5 out of 5 stars They Would Think You Were Crazy!!!!.......2006-06-21

If you really want to know what ails you the only person to ask is Dr. Whiplash. You see you may have shortness of pants, high stool, seat cramps or even "Delayed Borgarigmys"....The only cure for which is Death!!!! Then again maybe all you need is the complete collectors set of memorable music....You know melodies like In a Pershin Mellon, Waltz For Three People and The Hawaiian Halautation Song...Yes folks if you were to go to a store and ask for these....They Would Think You Were Crazy!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars The best Firesign Theatre album........2004-12-29

This is an album of clips from their live radio shows. Most of it is screamingly funny. When I make a CD or tape of my favorite music, I always find myself adding at least one track from 'Dear Friends' to end the collection on a funny note. My friends always ask 'what was that??!!!!' as they laugh themselves silly. This is a 'must have' for anyone who grew-up in the late 60s--early 70s----or anyone who loves bizarre humor.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Interesting bluegrass album full of quality.......2003-05-10

By the time Suzanne recorded this album, she was a veteran of the bluegrass and old-time country music scene, having previously sung with the Hotmud family and the Dry branch fire squad.

Sweet sunny south, Just a few more days, Faded coat of blue, I have no mother now and are all over fifty years old and you don't them very often these days. Another song of comparable vintage, Miss the Mississippi and you, is better known, having been covered by Emmylou Harris, Crystal Gayle and others down the years.

We must have been out of our minds was a sixties country hit duet for George Jones and Melba Montgomery, while Louisiana woman Mississippi man was a seventies country hit duet for Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn.

The remaining songs are contemporary, including some co-written by Suzanne. Overall, this album has a variety of songs of different tempos, all performed to a high standard. If you enjoy traditional bluegrass, you should enjoy this.

5 out of 5 stars silver toungue and gold plated lies.......2002-12-09

I heard this particular song by Suzanne Thomas on the recently released O SISTER CD. Absolutely enjoyed the vocal and music. I have yet to hear the balance of the album, however based on this single cut, I'm sure I'm not going to be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Addictive.......2000-04-17

I have had this CD for a couple of weeks and can't stop listening to it. The selection of music on this CD was obviously given a great deal of thought - excellent choices. Suzanne sings with a great deal of feeling in these songs and she and Ron Thomason together are hard to beat in this type of music. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars IN MY TOP TEN OF 1998.......1999-02-04

This is a delicate and poetic CD that is often in my rotation. It's one of those CD's that can take repeated listens from start to finish. "Leaving This Land", the title track and "Faded Coat of Blue" are just a few of the songs that force me to stop what I'm doing and sit down to listen until they're finished. Thomas's voice can evoke such a sense of worn-out tiredness, such bittersweet sadness, yet on other songs, such as "Louisiana Man", she'll have you tapping your foot and dancing along with the joyous vocals. It's bluegrass, yes, but it's also folk, country-and wonderfully timeless in it's conveyance of emotion. I must confess to not having tremendous patience with a steady diet of bluegrass music, although I certainly own my share, but this CD rises above whatever label one would put upon it. If Iris Dement, Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss are in your collection, you definitely need this. If they aren't, and you're looking to explore, buy this slice of Americana. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks.......2007-01-24

First of all, people seem to be overly critical of the choir. They say that it sounds out of tune or whatever, but this is only because they were recorded live. In Advent: One-Winged Angel, the same choir sounds totally incredible. The choir itself isn't bad, it's the recording environment that was not so hot.
That said, I can say that this is a very impressive two CD set, even though several of the songs I don't recognize. The music is professionally composed and arranged, and just goes to show that Final Fantasy music is proffesional level. The only cons are the lesser sound quality of being recorded live and the MC tracks, which can get to be a bit long. The way they keep talking makes me really want to know what they're saying. My favorite pieces are:
      1. One-Winged Angel: I do admit that the FFVII Reunion Tracks arrangement is better, but only because of the recording environment. This arrangement has a lot of cool new elements and an awesome sound. The only problems I see with this arrangement is the absent-minded microphone placement and a bit of background shuffling that is heard at one part. The shuffling is very quiet and you get used to it, but I'm just picky about these things. As for the microphone placement; whoever put one right next to the #%@$in' snare drum deproved the quality of the piece a bit much. The snare drum during the chorus is louder than any of the other parts, and the choir is already being a bit overpowered by the orchestra. This makes for a choral section that isn't heard well enough. Despite all these slight cons, however, this arrangement of the classic piece remains superb and awesome-sounding.
      2. Liberi Fatali: Same choir rant as before. This arrangement doesn't sound quite as good as the original, but it's not really that different, it's still an incredible piece.
      3. Melodies of Life: This arrangement is better, I think, than the original except for the singing. She sounded a lot more confident in the original. But aside from that, this song is a great classic.
      4. Suteki Da Ne: The original was quite a bit better, both in sound quality and in the singing. Rikki was nervous during the performance, it is shown by her incessant breath-taking in the middle of phrases and low confidence in her voice. However, the instrumentation does sound nicely different in some spots, and Rikki's singing is still beautiful.
This album is a must-have for any FF freak, and is better than most all the ordinary FF soundtracks. Don't miss it.

      5 out of 5 stars I love this CD........2004-02-23

Firstly, Mr. Gibbs -- why would anybody buy this if they haven't played Final Fantasy games?

Secondly, this is an amazing CD. With the exception of One-Winged Angel, every track on this CD is (in my opinion) the best orchestral version of these songs ever done. And this is coming from somebody who owns Celtic Moon, Grand Finale, Fithos Lusec, and a smattering of Orchestral Game Concert CDs.

Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It really is excellent.

4 out of 5 stars For those who wanna get their FF orchestra groove on..........2004-02-20

Final Fantasy 20020220 is worth buying. It is a great CD to listen to if you want to hear orchestrated versions performed live, mistakes and all. That said, let me point out everything that is wrong with the performances, and why I did not give 20020220 a 5/5. As partial as I am to Final Fantasy music, I must criticize the singing in this performance. In both tracks that featured a choir (Liberi Fatali and One Winged Angel) it seemed like everyone was trying to outsing each other, the tenors in particular would sing awfully loud, while everyone else was drowned out. The soloists RIKKI and Emiko Shiratori did a fabulous job, in my opinon. Others said that they sounded nervous, I do not agree. The actual performance by the orchestra was brilliant. I especially liked Liberi Fatali, One Winged Angel, and Vamo' Alla Flamenco. I wish I could speak Japanese, because 8 of the 25 tracks on the 2 disc set are nothing but the concert MCs talking about stuff. All in all I would like to restate that FF20020220 is worth buying, but maybe you should play some of the FF games to hear these songs before you listen to the orchestra version, all the more to appreciate this masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars The Fantasy Continues..........2003-06-10

Nobuo Uematsu truly holds true to the Final Fantasy music legacy he himself set down beginning with the Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite CDs. Although I do have a few complaints, my overall take on this album is extremely positive. I'd say my favourite renditions on this CD are "Vamo' Alla Flamenco", lush, rich arrangement for orchestra (which truly is the greatest symphonic rendering I've seen from almost any game composer [thanks to Shiro Hamaguchi]) and the brass-graced Final Fantasy VI's "Terra" / "Tina" (which almost lives up to the Grand Finale version). Basically, every single song on these two CDs were mind-blowing with the exceptions of the two most crucial ones, "Liberi Fatali" and "One-Winged Angel". Okay, fine... I've got to give credit where credit is due, Liberi Fatali isn't THAT bad. It falters near the end though, but the primary complaint isn't the symphonic elements (or even the annoying snare [?] drum... *grrr*), but rather the supposed choir they assigned. Not very harmonic or in-tune, but I still give it 4-stars.
To sum it all up, all very nice arrangements with those little differences which make it all the more enjoyable. Cons? The choir voices and the MC segments (I don't speak Japanese, so my apologies if you do and find them entertaining).

4 out of 5 stars One of the Best (non OST) Final Fantasy works.......2003-02-19

There hasn't been a live CD since the ill-fated "Symphonic Suite" many years ago and now there is this - quite simply put a live version of some of the best Final Fantasy songs. The Tokyo Philharmonic is on every beat and adds alittle more to the Final Fantasy melodies. The MC's get annoying and their Japanese is very hard to understand. The choice of songs was superb yet there is no "live feel" as most of the songs are played just as you would have heard them on another Final Fantasy CD. All in all, this is one of the best and one can easily see by some of its few flaws to its real beauty - the epitome of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy work.

          Album Description

Shaker music is a unique body of American sacred folk music, created by eighteen American Shaker communities over a period of one hundred and forty years (1780-1920). This rich tradition of song continues to serve the Shaker community in the twenty-first century because it embodies their history, records the testimony of Shakers "who have gone before," articulates the religious principles on which Shakerism is founded, and reflects the faith of the contemporary community. Shaker music was created and nurtured in communities that prized isolation from worldly ways. Shaker melodies, although related to the larger tradition of Anglo-American folk songs, are not bound by their form, tonality, melodic or rhythmic structure.

The Enfield Shaker singers are a vocal ensemble of adults and children devoted to the study and performance of Shaker music. The group is open to all without audition, and is made up of both trained musicians and amateur singers. We draw heavily on the repertoire received or composed in the two societies that were the New Hampshire Bishopric—Canterbury and Enfield. Since the New Hampshire societies enriched their repertoire with songs from all the other Shaker communities, they also sing songs of the New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio and Kentucky Shakers.

The Enfield Shaker Singers are drawn to Shaker spirituals that illuminate Shaker communal values and broaden our definitions of the sacred. The songs included on this recording illustrate some of the many ways music served Shaker communities. Most Shaker song texts are theologically direct, emotionally honest, and expressive of our shared humanity.

On this recording we offer thirty-nine songs we have come to love. Some have special meaning for individuals. We associate others with a particular singer in the group, or an occasion when it was sung. Each song offers us slightly different insights into Shaker aspiration, and Shaker faith. We hope that, through this recording, others will also come to love and sing them too. —Mary Ann Haagen, from the liner notes

4 out of 5 stars Religious music from the 19th century.......2007-07-07

If one likes the songs of the Shakers written in the late 18th and early 19 century that were without musical instruments, then you may like this CD. I found 8 songs out of the 30 or more on the CD that I liked, the others I did not care for much. This is no fault of the creators of the Cd, it is simply the style of the Shakers of the past.

          5 out of 5 stars A wonderful listening treat.......2005-01-11

This CD is a delight! The simple melodies, surprising harmonies, and clarity of the voices makes you want to sing along. Listening makes one smile, regardless of one's religious persuasion. Thank you for giving us these songs and preserving the tradition of this music.
