Yes.......2003-04-03
This is a marvelous collection. There were a few pieces I wish that it would include, such as the rest of his Piano Concerto No.2, or perhaps The Rock, but the fact that the performances are generally great and the recording quality is near-perfect makes up for that.
I would recommend this to anyone who is just starting to become interested in the works of Sergei Rachmaninov.
A decent introduction to the music of Rachmaninoff.......2001-08-12
Sergi Rachmaninoff was the last of the great Romantic composers, especially since the Romantic period had ended for European artists when he was at his height. Although a composer and a conductor, Rachmaninoff was also a virtuoso pianist, which explains why his best compositions feature the piano, either in solo work or with an orchestra. His "Prelude in C-Sharp Minor," which he wrote when he was 20, made him famous throughout the world. This collection also includes several other preludes, "Vocalise," and the famous 18th Variation (Andnate cantible) from Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. My only serious complaint about this collection as an introduction to Rachmaninoff is that it only has one movement from his Second Piano Concerto and I have other CDs that include the entire work, which I thing is a good idea.
Great Collection of "Hits".......2000-06-22
This is actually not a bad collection of Greatest Hits. Usually the problem with collections like these is that they have bad recordings and not very good performances but some of these ones are actually okay, and it features performances by Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax among others. In general these are the works of art you think of when you think of Rachmaninoff and so these pieces are a perfect representation of his style.
One of the best CD I own.......1999-12-30
This is one of the best I own. The music is so great, hard to explain...so moving, especially the first track. It reminds me of Russia a lot. I listen to it everyday while driving to work. I highly recommend it.

This guy is COUNTRY with capitol letters!.......2006-05-03
Since I don't like today's country (since the mid 90's)and here
in Europe we don't have country radio stations to listen to, the
only way to hear country is buying CD's from the States something
I'm doing since the past 18 months. These mostly are from the
70's and 80's and I am so happy to re-discover all those artists
I used to listen to during my many business trips through the USA
and whose LP's I always brought back after each trip. Now I am
recuperating them on CD and buying many I didn't have then or
didn't even know the existence of. This is the case with Gene
Watson. Last month I received "Ultimate Collection" and gave it
5 stars. Gee, how I love his music. I would have liked to give
these "18 greatest hits" 5 stars as well but again I received a
CD with zero information. Who wrote these songs? When were they
recorded? Does the record company release them this way to cut
down prices? What a shame.
Excellent Album.......2005-10-10
Gene Watson was one of the finest voices in country music, and this compilation of 18 hits provide a fine sampling of that voice. Considered by some to be "hard country", I find Gene Watson to have a more "pop" oriented voice that combined well with his selection of songs; and in the '70's, that proved to be enough to keep him on the charts. While many of the songs on this album are pure country, others are the typical, drab, 70's pop that filled the void between the Nashville Sound and the New Traditional era of the 80's. In any case, there is no doubt that Gene Watson earned his spot in Country Music, and this collection carries those hits that made him the household name he is today; including his signature songs "Farewell Party" and "Love in the Hot Afternoon". If you prefer the more traditional country sound, his "You Could Know as Much About a Stranger" and "Should I Come Home" are also included.

While Lewis's Sun sessions between 1956 and 1963 are legendarily eclectic (everything from Stephen Foster to Hank Williams to a rewrite of the Midnighters' "Sexy Ways"), this single-disc distillation sticks mainly to rock and country veins. The records that made the Killer a short-lived yet serious challenger to Elvis--"Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On," "Great Balls of Fire"--are here, in addition to lesser known but equally hot sides such as "It'll Be Me" and the blindingly dirty-minded "Big Legged Woman." A key collection from one of America's greatest recorded talents. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
The Killer leaves me ....Breathless!!!.......2007-06-12
Because there are so many compilations out there of Jerry Lee's Sun recordings, and this CD has only 18 songs on it, I'll say this is a fantastic introduction to his classic material. He recorded an enormous amount of material for the Sun label, but this is still a must-have, especially for anyone who doesn't have any of his songs.
You could say that Jerry Lee is the real king of rock'n'roll, certainly one of the founding fathers, and much wilder than Elvis. But really, who cares who the "King" of rock'n'roll is anyway? Yes, Elvis was great and historically important, but so were so many others (many of whom were much more musically talented) including Jerry Lee. The real wild man of Sun Records is still rocking after all these years-a true survivor!
They don't call him "Killer" for nothing!.......2006-09-12
Jerry Lee Lewis is truly the King Of Rock and Roll (sorry Elvis).
This CD contains all the major hits plus many other rockin' tunes Jerry Lee recorded on the fabled Sun label.
The sound quality is first-rate.
I only wish there were some decent liner notes.
Leaves You Breathless--ah!.......2006-04-25
When I was a little kid, I remember watching Jerry Lee Lewis on some TV show or other and finding him a little scary. All that manic energy. He looked dangerous. When I got a little older, I decided that was a good thing.
Of course, coming of age in the age of psychedelia, I might have found Jerry Lee a little passe--but one of the good things about that era was that there really was an appreciation of what went down before. The best 60s groups were always quick to credit their artistic forefathers. Certainly that was the case with the Beatles and the Stones. The Beatles, like Jerry Lee here, did a version of "Matchbox" in their day, certainly a nod toward the greats of the previous decade.
Jerry Lee is known primarily for a handful of hard driving, piano based rockers like "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shankin'..." Aficionados (and knowlegeable dilettantes) know that he had a lot more up his sleeve than that. OK, so he couldn't turn in a masterful ballad, but there's still enough variety in the uptempo numbers to satisfy any discriminating rock'n'roll fan. What can you say about a collection that includes a rollicking "When The Saints Go Marchin' In" and then turns around and offers up a frankly salacious "Big Legged Woman" for your listening pleasure. Call it your basic Southern dichotomy--that largely unself-concsious blend of the sacred and the profane. Stylistically it provides textbook example after example of rock's links to the blues and C&W. It's all part of the gumbo, and it's all pretty darn tasty.
GREAT FUN, GO TELL ELVIS TO O.D. IN HIS BATHTUB!.......2005-12-16
Jerry Lee Lewis is the real king of Rock and Roll. Well, he's way better than Elvis, for sure. Jerry Lee Lewis was wilder, way more fun, and way more charismatic. Just watch GREAT BALLS OF FIRE, that is one cool movie. ELVIS is lame, I can't stand his songs, but JERRY LEE LEWIS I can put on at a party and people will get shakin! In fact there will be a WHOLE LOTTA SHAKIN' if that tune is playing. This collection here is the most satisfying, sure AMAZON highlights the other SUN collection (25 hits) over this one (18), but this is the better collection. While the other one has more songs, it doesn't include WILD ONE, which is absolutely key if you are going to purchase some JERRY LEE. This version sticks to the killer, and it includes WILD ONE, which is a short song... but its so good. I can usually listen to it ten times over, and you mix in the other fifties gems BIG LEGGED WOMAN, HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL, or GREAT BALLS OF FIRE and you have one fun assed piece of American rock and roll. Everybody will enjoy this stuff!
Sound is old-not new like today.......2005-08-18
I can tell you that I love Jerry Lee and his songs. The only thing I didn't like about this CD is that it sounds old. It sounds like a record being played instead of a CD. It's not clear or crisp like a CD you would buy today, but it does have all of his classics on it.

Muffled.......2006-11-03
This is a decent enough recording, but it's not anywhere near the best that I have heard. The Andre Previn/LSO recording is much better mixed; at times it seems like there's a muffle on the mikes, or that you're hearing it from a distance.
If I wanted good, dynamic background music, I'd do this. If I wanted to really listen to the music, I'd pick another version.
Somewhat disappointing........2003-09-10
I bought this for the full-length rendition of Rhapsody in Blue. I found the brass too tinny sounding, and the rhythm off in a few places. I like the snippet of this song on the "Best of the Milleneum" CD much better.
Gershwin At His Best in Hearts!.......2003-03-19
To someone who came along as a teenage boy in the mid-1940's, this CD has the elements of authenticity, even surprise, musical history, highly intense performances, and ways evoking memories of emotional highlights of my Youth. When mediocre orchestra 1st tackled Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue" at Smoky Mtn Music Camp we were preparing for Sunday's outdoor Concert. Pianos were played by two friends who've presided Music Dept at Carson-Newman College in East Tennessee. In the Trombone section was a skinny kid with too much hair and too big an ego! When our esteemed conductor began the opening bars the Clarinet Soloist, my close friend Danny Boy slide-up the chromatic scale with fleurish. He later became a NC Doctor! He likely plays clarinet for his own amazement in someone's Dixieland Band!
On this wondrous CD there are historic names like Bernstein, Kostelanez, John Williams and Michael Tilson Thomas, Conductors. Andre Previn, Yo-Yo Ma and Sarah Vaughan as Soloists. I would have a hard time choosing which may be called my favorite! It would depend on the day they are playing in my car... traveling to Columbia Seminary classes or GA Diagnostic Prison for lunch with Chaplain friends! I often sing along with the Rhapsody as I did in 1949 when Oscar Levant soloed with Chattanooga Orch. My very young wife was playing in the first violin section! Still today I am totally wiped out when anyone as intensely romantic as Sarah Vaughan sings "Summertime" or "I Loves You, Porgy!"
Is it not amazingly wondrous that someone could create so much enjoyable music in his short lifetime of 39 years? I never wish to part with this all-time favorite 10-Star Recording!
Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood
The best America has to offer!!.......1999-03-09
This is the best collection of his songs i have ever heard. That's probably because it features conductors like John Williams and Micheal Tilson Thomas. My personal favorite is the allegro agitato from the Concerto in F. I have other recordings of this song, but none of them can even come close to matching the excitement of this one.

There's been a flood of compilations and reissues since his death in 1988, but Rhino's terrific package remains one of the best single discs of Orbison material. Opening with his two regional rockabilly hits for Sun Records and spanning the huge Monument hits, it reinforces why Elvis Presley viewed the Big O as his biggest competition during the Army years and why Orbison was the first '50s rocker to join the Traveling Wilburys. No compilation yet available covers his entire career, but this one certainly represents the hit years. One quibble: the stereo mixes, especially on "Blue Angel," are beautiful yet radically different from the mixes you may be more familiar with. --Bill Holdship
Customer Reviews:
The best compilation to own for original Orbison hits!.......2007-07-11
I can't understand why certain labels have to issue re-recordings of hits. I was ready to purchase the "Essential Roy Orbison" when I discovered that cuts like "Running Scared" and "In Dreams" were re-recorded in 1985. For those who grew up with Orbison's hits over transistor or car radios listening to AM, you know only the originals will do. This is the best compilation to own for Orbison's greatest hits. They are all originals recorded between 1956 and 1964. Actually his peak hit years 1960-64 are all here and in excellent sound by Rhino. Orbison was one of the greatest singers in pop rock history. At a time when pretty boys ruled the charts (Bobby Vee, Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon etc.)Orbison looked like the guy down the street who worked on your car. But he had real talent and when he sang, there was no mistaking that operatic quality of his god-given voice. His records had drama. Listen to Blue Angel, Only The Lonely, Cryin' and Running Scared and it can still send chills up your spine. He was truly a rock and roll original. This set offers his biggest 18 hits and as usual the sound from Rhino is clean, crisp and superb. It's the one to get!
Only the lonley, Roy Orbison CD.......2007-01-27
I was very impressed the CD was of great quality. I listen to it every day.
The classic collection of this Rock & Roll Hall of Famer.......2005-05-08
In spite of the fact this this disc was released back in 1988, "For The Lonely: 18 Greatest Hits" remains one of the finest Roy Orbison anthologies ever issued. He achieved his initial success at Sam Phillips' Sun records way back in 1956 with his memorable recording of "Ooby Dooby". He bounced around for a few years before finally landing at Fred Foster's fledgling Monument Records in 1960. This was a match made in heaven. For the next five years Roy Orbison made some of the most memorable sides in rock and roll history.
"For The Lonely: 18 Greatest Hits" features a pair of his best recordings from his days at Sun including "Rockhouse" and the aforementioned "Ooby Dooby". The remaining 16 tracks are devoted to the Monument years. Oddly enough, his biggest hit of all time was one of his last at Monument. "Oh, Pretty Woman" went all the way to #1 in the late summer of 1964 and reportedly sold over 7 million copies! It remains one of the staples of oldies stations to this day! Among the other familiar hits you will find in this collection are "In Dreams", "It's Over", "Running Scared" and of course "Only The Lonely" from 1960. You might not be familiar with some of the lesser hits that are included but I would recommend to you "Working For The Man" and the wonderful "Uptown" which was his first single on the Monument label. I was also pleased to see Orbison's fine rendition of Willie Nelson's holiday classic "Pretty Paper" included here as well. For those who appreciate such things there is a nicely done 12 page booklet included for your enjoyment.
Roy Orbison left Monument records for what he hoped were greener pastures at M-G-M back in 1965. But despite the fact that he continued to churn out high quality material times had changed and Roy Orbison was simply out of tune with prevailing trends. He would be largely out of the limelight for the next two decades. Happily, Roy Orbison would be introduced to a whole new generation of fans in the late 1980's as a member of the Traveling Wilburys. We lost Roy Orbison unexpectedly in 1988 but the public honered him by making "You Got It" a surprise Top Ten hit shortly after his death.
No collection of classic rock and roll or American popular music for that matter can be considered complete without the biggest hits of Roy Orbison. This was actually one of the first discs I purchased when I bought my CD player back in 1988. And for my money, "For The Lonely: 18 Greatest Hits" remains the best Orbison collection around. Highly recommended!
Super From Start To Finish.......2005-02-07
To echo another reviewers commens, no one sang like Roy Orbison. What beauty in his voice. And his vision spread varied quite a bit from rockabilly to ballads and beyond the usual three chord rock fare of the fifties era.
Great songs exist throughout on this. My faves are Mean Woman Blues, Oh Pretty World, Oooby Dooby, Running Scared, Crying, Working For The Man, and Drean Baby. Gosh I just listed 8 of the 18 tracks. Heck they are all enjoyable but those 8 stand out a little more.
Nonetheless, Roy Orbison's voice and song stylings will live on forever. Pick this collection up for sure.
Rhino and Roy: A marriage made in heaven.......2004-04-26
I've never been disappointed with a Rhino release and this is no exception. All of the tracks are beautifully remastered and sound fnatastic! Roy Orbison is still curiously underrarted and under-appreciated. I was ecstatic when he went through a revival in the late 80's, but it was tragically cut short when Roy died, then his reputation again fell by the wayside. His voice remains the purest instrument in popular music in the last fifty years. Listening to these remastered recordings is an absolute joy because I'm accustomed to listening to these treasures on vinyl, with the typical pops, buzzes and surface scratches. All of that has been eliminated on this disc. The sound quality is exceptional throughout.
Included are all of Orbison's signature hits, from the classic "Pretty Woman" to the haunting "Crying" with the poignant tenor cry at the conclusion. My personal favorite Orbison song has always been "Running Scared," a sort of mini-opera, replete with the soaring, rather syrupy arrangements his songs are noted for. I admit many of these arrangements sound dated, but the voice is the primary instrument anyway, and the only one you'll care about. If Elvis was blessed with a gorgeous set of pipes, Roy was in another league entirely and his gift never diminished. If you are an old Orbison die-hard fan, or a newbie to this incredible man, this collection will do you nicely.

COUNTRY CLASSICS.......2007-04-19
THIS IS THE PERFECT GREATEST HITS COLLECTION OF DON GIBSON , THE SOUND IS PERFECT , THE RECORDINGS ARE THE ORIGINAL , IF YOU LIKE DON GIBSON THEN YOU'LL LOVE THIS CD.
Disappointed.......2007-02-15
Not the original recordings and not spelled out in the ads. My fault I should have listened to the samples. Now I have to buy what I thought I was getting.
Some RCA Remakes, some Hickory Classics.......2005-11-04
Don Gibson had 27 charted records while recording for Hickory or Hickory/ABC. This CD picks up 7 or 8 of his Hickory hits, with the rest being remakes of his RCA successes. The remakes are well worth being heard, but I'd really like to see a decent collection focusing the Hickory hits. Gibson's last top ten for RCA had occurred in 1966 except for a pair duets with Dottie West. The switch to Hickory in 1970 revitalized his career with "Country Green" going to #5 in 1971, "Woman (Sensuous Woman)" reaching #1 in 1972 and several more top 15 tunes.
Remakes?.......2005-04-17
I don't think of these as 'remakes'!, April 17, 2005
Reviewer: D. G. Bradford (Oklahoma) - See all my reviews
To Cory L. Schwent and other reviewers - Some of these definitely aren't remakes. He originally wrote some of these songs so recordings by other artists are 'remakes'. Many more famous artists have recorded his songs which shows how very talented this man was. Oh Lonesome Me and I Can't Stop Loving You were even written in the same afternoon! He may not have been the greatest singer but you can't beat his songwriting....
Ain't It Always Like That?.......2004-12-09
You finally get all the songs you want to hear from a certain recording artist and there's a passel of remakes in it? Sure, the songs have a charm of their own done again years later, but some people (like myself) remember every little nuanace of a favorite song, a small note on the guitar, the singer going a little higher on a certain note, etc. that recalled a time or times back when, when you and that special person were listening to the song when it was new. If you don't care about such little things, sure, the songs are good, yes, they are, so buy it. We ARE talking Don Gibson after all.

great collection.......2006-08-07
This is a very good collection for any Sandra fan or someone getting introduced to her. There is another collection out called My Favourites, it's a double CD. If you can, get that collection too. It contains a few remixes that were done exclusively for that CD. The remixes are very well produced.
One of the best artist "EVER" loves her music.......2005-09-14
In 1985 I was in junior high when Sandra first appeared. I found her music when I was simply wondering in a shopping center and came upon an import music store. Fell in love with all her songs, especially " Into a secret land ". I played it over and over again. Her music and sound is simply amazing. Now, 20 years later her music is still timeless. I simply want to thank her for getting me through my teenage years with her amazing music. She is awesome.
Other favorites are Modern Talking, Silent Circle, Joy, C.C.Catch, Fancy, Eddie Huntington, Gazebo, Bad Boys Blue and blue system.
Sounds too dated.......2005-08-21
This is just for the nostalgic Europop fan. I remember there was too much going on in the U.S. music scene in 1986 for her to become a hit. Somehow "Maria Magdalena" crossed the pond and became a big hit in Latin America. Other Europop bands like Alphaville and Erasure did pretty decently in Latin America as well. In the U.S. only the Pet Shop Boys could make a dent. The problem with Sandra is the music is too syrupy to remain relevant after it had run its top-40 life. Still, Euro and Latin fans will disagree and will remember how great it felt when she was on the radio all the time 20 years ago.
My Thoughts.......2005-01-11
I thought this CD was the biggest piece of Euro-trash when I first put it in. It has really grown on me since. I'm a huge Hubert Kah fan, and their voices are very noticeable in the background. She sounds nothing like on her Enigma albums where she's mostly whispering.
It's just nice.......2004-07-08
It is just great! I was growing up with this music and I think it sounds so much better now after all these years than American music sounds now. Yes, probably Michael overdid a bit on disco sound. Myself I'm not into disco at all but Sandra even with all that "jazz" seems to pull it off! Well, it works for me. I'm no music critic or anything like that but her music makes me feel better, lighter and more hopefull. That's all I want from music.

Because they miss part of the defining equation--Little Richard's rhythm & blues were never influenced by country & western the way Elvis', Chuck Berry's and Fats Domino's were--it's not really accurate to call these singles the birth of rock & roll, despite what Richard himself will tell you. But what is rock & roll here is the insane, over-the-top, in-your-face attitude that Richard pours into every word and every thrilling gospel "Woo!" It's that attitude that leaves amazing, manic records like "Long Tall Sally," "All Around The World," and the great "Lucille" still standing as among the most memorable music ever made. --David Cantwell

This is a great collection of 18 of Little Richard's best songs. Great, classic material. Highly recommended.
Exellent 50's R&B, very wild..........2004-03-29
If you were to find a male conterpart to Ruth Brown, it would be Little Richard! Although many paople have different ideas of what rock'n'roll is, I think this music has more in common with New Orleans boogie woogie & r&b. The music is all uptempo and can easily be danced to if you know how to jitterbug or jive. The music also qualifies as sort of "jump blues." Many modern swing bands today like Indigo Swing, Royal Crown Review, and many others use the basic wailin' saxes, wailin' vocals with pounding boogie piano, so this music in many ways would influence the swing revival of the late 90's, which has already faded. In anycase this is awesome r&b, r'n'r, jivin' swingin' jumpin' blues'n'boogie woogie. Awesome vocals throughout.
