The Ramblin' Man

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
This 1974 RCA release, newly reissued in 2000 by Buddha Records, was something of a transitional album for Waylon Jennings. The initial recording session, which produced the hit "I'm a Ramblin' Man," was coproduced by Jennings and Ray Pennington and featured a Nashville studio band complete with chirping backup singers. The rest of the album was coproduced by Jennings and fellow Outlaw Tompall Glaser and featured the singer's own road band with longtime drummer Richie Albright and steel-guitar great Ralph Mooney. The hits included "Rainy Day Woman" and "Amanda," which became a No. 1 single in 1979, five years after the album's release. But the best tracks--including a cover of Rex Griffin's "The Last Letter" not found on the original release--anticipate the austere, heartfelt approach Jennings would take when he returned to the studio the following year to paint his masterpiece, Dreaming My Dreams. --Rick Mitchell

5 out of 5 stars Another Perfect WJ Album.......2007-04-03

One of Waylon's two great albums from 1974. This is easily one of my favorite of Waylon's studio efforts from his '70s peak. Although it doesn't sound all that much different from his other albums of this period, it is still a fantastic album with top-notch songs. I highly recommend this album for mellow evenings, poker nights or just plain relaxing.

Best Songs:

"I'm A Ramblin' Man"
"Rainy Day Woman"
"Midnight Rider"
"The Hunger"
"Amanda"

4 out of 5 stars Love This Stuff.......2007-02-28

This is the last 70's Waylon album I needed to complete my collection, I don't know why I waited until now to buy it, maybe it was the scary cover, but now that I have it, I am sorry I waited so long, it contains a class set of tunes, hard for any Waylon fan to resist, it's not his best, but this time period was near his masterpiece releases and is still a great album.

5 out of 5 stars Rainy Day Woman / Cloudy Days.......2006-12-22

These are two songs you don't always hear on the radio or ever at all. These are great country songs. Waylon's guitar is bright and full here.

Do you like anything by Waylon? If so, you'll LOVE this! I believe this is one of his peak recordings. His version of Midnight Rider is good.

OK. Now that I'm writing this, I have to admit, this is one of my favorite country records ever. This is like pure gold. If you don't have this one, and you like real country, you are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Another good'un from Ol' Waylon!.......2002-12-10

"The Ramblin' Man," pre-"Dreaming My Dreams" and post-"This Time," is an album that shows Waylon in both rockin' (title track, "Rainy Day Woman," "Midnight Rider," "Memories Of You And I") and more tender modes ("The Hunger," "Amanda"). It's an album that was perhaps a sign of things to come -- "Dreaming My Dreams" -- with a few tender ballads mixed with more uptempo numbers. Waylon could rock with the best of them, but he was also as good with a ballad as anyone you could ever hope to find. Put simply, he was extremely versatile.

"The Ramblin' Man" has a number of outstanding cuts in the title track, "Rainy Day Woman," "The Hunger," "Memories Of You And I," "Amanda," and my personal favourite, "Midnight Rider." This album really doesn't have any "filler" -- just prime Waylon.

Musically, Waylon plays plenty of lead guitar. He really smokes on "Rainy Day Woman" and "Midnight Rider," and he plays very tastefully on "Cloudy Days" and "Amanda." This album contains some classic Waylon guitar moments -- things that the students of his guitar style can learn a great deal from. It also features what is, I believe, the first recorded evidencee of Waylon's use of the phase shifter, the guitar effect that would shape his guitar tone later on. Vocally Waylon is, of course, stunning on this album.

"The Ramblin' Man" is another essential album. It captures that unique "Waylon sound" that Waylon became so well-known for. On this album you'll hear that sound becoming more and more like the sound that would dominate his later albums. Maybe it's not considered on-par with "Honky Tonk Heroes" or "Dreaming My Dreams" by many, but it is still a damn fine example of Ol' Waylon's incredible musical talent, and it's better than the so-called "country" that is out there today.

Meaninful songs played and sung by a man who could make you feel them. 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Another good one.......2000-02-19

Another good Waylon Jennings album - made in Waylon's height of his popularity. This one is a good one, not as good as Dreaming My Dreams or Honkytonk Heroes...but still excellent. Memories of You and I is absolutely fantastic - as are Waylon's version of Midnight Rider and the song "The Hunger". Great record, they need to keep re-issuing his old stuff.

Director Tim Burton's adaptation of author Daniel Wallace's bittersweet Southern Gothic novel has been billed as his first mainstream character drama, a notion that conveniently ignores the story's inherent fables and flights of imagination. But composer Danny Elfman understands their every dark nook and murky cranny with this magical, often deftly understated score. While the epic melodrama of his comic book scores (Batman, Spider-Man, The Hulk, et. al.) have made him a mainstream Hollywood music star, longtime fans know that the composer's true emotional range is seldom tapped as well as it is working with longtime collaborator Burton. His music here bridges the delicate pastoralism of Rachel Portman and restless, rhythmic mysteries of Thomas Newman, seasoned with twangy fiddles and bowings to the film's occasionally Gothic turns and concludes with the deliciously loopy "Twice the Love (Siamese Twins Song)." Anchored by Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam's wistful theme song "Man of the Hour" and a half-dozen pop chart nuggets than span half-a-century, Elfman's work here (as well as Pearl Jam's) received a much-deserved Golden Globe nomination. --Jerry McCulley

Movie Title: Big Fish
Produced By: Schmidt Richard D. Zanuck, Dan Jinks
Director: Tim Burton
Length: 2 hours. 5 minutes
Rated: PG-13
Released Date: 2003

Do you like movies that will make you cry so hard that you will need a dump truck full of tissues? Or when a person gets to a scary part in the woods and a man almost dies and gets your hopes up. Well if you do this is the movie the for you.

This movie has terrific characters in it. If you are wondering how I'll tell you how. Because all characters fit into the part that they are supposed to play in. defiantly Edward bloom. Edward bloom is the star of this movie. He is a brave and ignorant man. So if you don't believe me that he fits in his part GIVE ME A CALL.

Also this movie has a lot of fantasy world in it. Like the 12 foot tall giant the moving (killing) trees. Also the eye. The eye is a eye that a witch has that will show you how you die. Pretty freaky ha. Most movies that you see are realistic not fantasy except for a couple.....this one is. It's a very good movie you really really need too watch it.

This movie is mostly about an old man that tells a bunch of stories about him in his younger years. He talks about what he does and how he does it. You will never understand this movie if you don't watch it from the beginning.

This movie also has a couple of related and spooky parts in it. Like when his wife walks in will he is in the bath tub under water with his arms crossed a crossed his chest. And at the end of the movie he went to the lake and his son dropped him in the water and the old mans arms was crossed like in the bath tub. That is a related. The spooky is........well trust me you don't want too know. Any way I don't want to ruin it.

When you watch this movie please call me and tell me if you have any more of them tissues. Because I need them for next time I watch this movie. Sorry I couldn't tell you more but I really didn't want to tell you none of it. I just wanted to say WATCH THIS MOVIE NOW!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Big Fish Soundtrack.......2005-09-04

It is always great when you buy a soundtrack that actually plays the music exactly as it happened in the movie. There have been some that I've bought that are 'inspired' by the movie.

My only disappointment was that there were some songs like Sandra's Farewell that I just craved went longer than 1min 16secs.

Despite this, I'm glad I have got it.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect complement to a fantastic film.......2005-07-27

Tim Burton's film Big Fish is a wonderful movie, and composer Danny Elfman's Oscar-nominated score complements it beautifully. Elfman's music is very understated in the movie, and it wasn't until I listened to the film's soundtrack recently that I realized how hauntingly beautiful his music is.

Elfman's music is perfect for Burton's magical film about the larger-than-life character of Edward Bloom. Mystical, whimsical, and eerie at times, the score takes you deep into the weird and wondrous world of the character. The emotional "Sandra's Theme" is one of the best pieces of music on the soundtrack, and the jazzy number "Twice the Love" (the Siamese twins' song) closes out the CD with a bang.

The soundtrack is mostly instrumental, with the exception of the first seven tracks. These tracks are an eclectic mixed bag of music, featuring artists ranging from Pearl Jam to Buddy Holly to Elvis Presley. The real gold on this particular CD, though, is Elfman's music.

Even if you haven't seen the film (and you should; it's wonderful), if you enjoy quality instrumental music, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars "Amazing" song.......2005-02-27

I believe the other song refered to in the trailers is Josh Kelley's "Amazing" from his For the Ride Home CD. Hope this helps those of you who were looking for this song as I was.

5 out of 5 stars good soundtrack for a nice movie.......2004-08-13

The Big Fish soundtrack goes well with the best movie. I was impressed, but I think that "Dinah" by Bing Crosby is the oldest song on here. It's a neat thing to listen to if you're traveling somewhere far away and you're driving.I usually just listen from track 1-7 because they're the only ones that aren't classical, and thanks to Elvis Presley's superb existence and the year 1955, we have rock music!

    4 out of 5 stars Bob Seger's chart debut.......2007-04-04

Ann Arbor,Michigan-born Bob Seger began his musical career when he was a teenager and did record some music that unfortunately was never charted. This 1969 release marked the debut of Seger's entry on the pop/rock charts. This group, credited as The Bob Seger System, scored with the Top 20 hit,the title track. Seger's bandmates,at the time of these recordings, were never inducted into his later famous band, the Silver Bullet Band. However, when Seger formed SBB in 1975,they performed the title track for the first SBB album,LIVE BULLET. Seger didn't rise to fame until the 1976 release of LB. The other songs are cool.

5 out of 5 stars Rerelease this CD.......2006-10-30

Please, rerelease this CD. If you don't have "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" in your collection, then you have a big void. I have that hole, and I need to feel it with real rock from its roots and its explosive birth in the 1969-71 era.

While you are at it, rerelease Bob's seventh album "Seven". I must have "Get Out of Denver" also.

Yes, I give great play-time to "Fire Down Below", "Old Time Rock & Roll" and some of his softer tracks, especially those with the great keyboarding. However, . . .

I must complete a collection of the truly great rock tracks from the early years. To this end, in my Amazon Shopping Cart, I have 1] Rainbow's "Rising", "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow" and "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll", 2] Elf's debut album, 3] Deep Purple's "Fireball" and "In Rock: 25th Anniversary" (the remastered Import)--you do not like hard and heavy rock if you don't have these Deep Purple tracks. No matter how much you may like Deep Purple's "mainstream hits", their heaviest and best work is on "Fireball" and "Deep Purple in Rock" 4] "James Gang Rides Again", 5] the three best Grand Funk Railroad Cds, 6] Uriah Heep's "Very 'Eavy...Very 'Umble" (the remastered Import)--listen to "Real Turned On", "Gypsy" and "Walking in your Shadow". Like Deep Purple, Heep's early work was fantastic and was part of the foundation and roots of all good rock that followed by the premier rock groups in the following 20 years. Finally, 7] Free's "20th Century Masters: Millennium Collection" and 8] Led Zepplin's I and II. I have some remastered Doors and a few other classics not mentioned here. In some cases here, I am upgrading quality through remastering--I even have some of these in vinyl.

Bob Seger was part of the birth of rock as we know it, with his Ramblin' Gamblin Man. Along with Hendrix, Seger and the bands I mentioned here plus a few others were part of the greatest quantum leap in music creativity in history. New sounds, new electronics, and an unbelieveable competitive scene emerged for a few years in the late 60s/early 70s. To truly appreciate what transpired if you were not lucky enough to live through that era as a late teen/20ish something, you must note this mega-gap these bands created from the then current to what these bands did during this time. No Aerosmith or AC/DC or any band since then has been able to match this quantum leap in musical "WOW" since then, no matter how good they were, or for that matter, how superior they may have been to these root-rockers.

Now, do you see why I must have Bob Seger's first album rereleased? Look, even if for historical purposes only, owning these CDs from the fathers of real rock is "High Voltage". It is like comparing the Mona Lisa to a portrait of Salma Hayek or Danica Patrick--I certainly go orgasmic over Danica and Salma and would prefer to get in their pants over Mona, but hanging the Mona Lisa in my living room would be my final choice.

Likewise, I can't get enough Aerosmith, Styx, Stones, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, Heart, ZZ Top, etc., but when it comes to putting on the headphones and pumping iron and treadmilling for two hours, give me these early rockers, the "Founding Fathers" of hard and heavy rock.

    Please!!!

    4 out of 5 stars A great debut!.......2006-07-05

Aside from a couple of substandard moments where the System lose sight of their strengths - and there aren't many - Ramblin' Gamblin' Man is an excellent album with a number of classic tracks. The better songs are mostly front-loaded: "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" leads off the album with a classic slab of self-mythology that hits the gut hard, and may be the very best track on the album. "Tales of Lucy Blue" follows, and it is by far the band's most successful attempt at psychedelia. "Ivory" is a soulful, energetic romp that finds Seger in fine voice. "Gone" is an atmospheric stab at psychedelia that sounds both melancholy and slightly menacing. "Down Home" is a great bluesy piece, and "Train Man" is the first of Bob Seger's wistful ballads (a tradition he would continue with the Silver Bullet Band). "2+2=?" is one of the great, lost Vietnam protest songs. Besides those, "Love Needs to Be Loved" is a decent piece of hippie-styled sentiment (think "All You Need is Love" played by a Detroit-styled rock band). It's "White Wall" and "Black Eyed Girl" that drag the album down - they're molded after the jams that were stylish at the time, but though at times they are interesting, they never quite gel the way a good jam should. "Doctor Fine" is nothing but a minute of odd instrumental that is expendable but not unlistenable.

Overall, Ramblin' Gamblin' Man is a great album, but it has flaws. Like many bands of the time, the Bob Seger System made a point of being eclectic, and though it worked most of the time, it resulted in a couple of clunkers that don't really work and aren't really representative of the band's strengths. Honestly, though, it's an excellent album that's worth repeated listenings.

On a final note, I'd like to say that even though the early Seger albums (RGM, Noah, Mongrel, Brand New Morning, Back in '72, Seven) are extremely hard to find, they are worth it - especially RGM, Mongrel, Back in '72, and Seven. Mr. Seger, if you're listening, please reissue these albums on CD! In particular, I think Mongrel is the best Seger album out there, and I can't find myself a copy. If they do come out at some point, I'll be first in line to buy myself all of 'em!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Pep.......2006-06-18

Record Emporium has a very reasonable Ramblin' Gamblin' Man/ Mongrel import on a single disk. They sell quickly so check back if you don't see them listed. You can also acquire quality recordings of both Noah and Back In '72. Important recordings that you're obviously looking for.

    5 out of 5 stars Seger's Core .......2006-05-16

This is an album that defined Segar in the early 70's. Rambling Gambling Man is a tune that resembled Seger's music career. Another great tune that kicks ass is 2+2, which puts Seger on the rock & roll map. This early album is must for any true Seger fan.

5 out of 5 stars Triple shot of prime Waylon.......2005-10-14

BMG U.K.'s 2-disc set pulls together three prime Jennings LPs: 1974's "This Time" and "The Ramblin' Man" and 1975's "Dreaming My Dreams." Though he'd recorded fine albums before, and would record more in following years, this triple-shot represents the core of Jennings time as an outlaw country artist, and an unmatched trifecta. "This Time" has a slightly muted energy, almost as if Jennings was taking a breath between the outburst of "Honky Tonk Heroes" and the pair of albums that would follow. This is the most soulful and introspective mood Jennings ever got down on record, and the presence of Willie Nelson (as writer of four songs, co-producer and electric guitarist) is strongly felt throughout.

"The Ramblin' Man" expands on the unruly outlaw spark of "Honky Tonk Heroes," and the follow-on "Dreaming My Dreams" combines the best aspects of its predecessors - both irascible and soulful. This third LP is the most eclectic of the lot, ranging from Jennings' hardcore country anthems ("Are You Sure Hank Done it This Way?" "Bob Wills is Still the King") to the Jack Clement scored strings of the title tune. Ralph Mooney's fine steel playing is heard throughout all three albums, each of which is filled with hits and equally worthy album sides.

This double-CD also includes most of the bonus tracks that appeared on BMG's U.S. reissues, including the five tracks recorded in 1973 with Jerry Allison and Sonny Curtis of the Crickets. Completists might opt for the individual CDs (specifically to get two more bonus tracks: "All Around Cowboy" and "Ride Me Down Easy"), but you'd be hard to beat this collection's triple-shot of prime Jennings, complete with detailed liner notes and credits and several choice photos. 5 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to Waylon and acquire these albums.......2004-07-20

I'm a slow convert to a country fan. I bought my first Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline record probably six years ago. I only came around to the Outlaw stuff recently. My loss. These Waylon Jennings albums aren't so different from some of the more country leaning rock albums of the time. Waylon had an amazing voice and was a great interpreter of songs, he also is one of the few country stars who should be heard on an album to album basis, rather than singles. Here are three of finest from the classic Outlaw period bundled together for a good price.

This Time is probably the mellowest of three, and features several great takes on Willie Nelson songs. Its an indisputable classic. Dreaming My Dreams is equally revered and perhaps Jennings' most avowedly Outlaw leaning album. Finally, Ramblin' Man is the most outwardly rockingly and grandiose. It doesn't tend to get quite the accolades of the other two but to me is every bit as good. On it as polar opposites is one the finest uptempo Country songs (Rainy Day Woman) and the most heartbreaking ballad (Amanda).

Its also important that this "boxed set" is merely a package of the three albums as they're not haphazardly thrown on two CDs, brekaing up the flow. Finally, the bonus tracks scattered across the albums gives one an idea of just how diverse of music Waylong was putting out during this period. If you're going to become a Waylon you're going to need all of thse albums eventually. This is the most efficient way to do it. Essential.

5 out of 5 stars Waylon from 1973 to 1975.......2003-04-05

This double-CD is made up of three original albums, plus some tracks that were recorded but never released, most of which were Buddy Holly covers. Some of these eventually appeared in a medley on another Waylon album, I've always been crazy.

The first album, This time, shows a strong Willie Nelson influence. Willie wrote four of the songs (Pick up the tempo, Heaven or hell, It's not supposed to be that way and Walkin'), while he has also recorded at least two of the others (Slow moving outlaw and If you could touch her at all). The title track provided Waylon with his first number one country hit.

The second album, Rambling man, contains some interesting songs, especially Midnight rider (a cover of a Gregg Allman songs) and Amanda (first recorded by Don Williams), a song that eventually became a country number one when it was released as a single several years later in 1979. In 1974, I'm a rambling man was Waylon's second country number one, while Rainy day women (written by Waylon himself) just missed out, peaking at number two. Other notable songs such as Oklahoma sunshine, Cloudy days, It'll be her and The hunger make this one of Waylon's finest albums ever.

The third album, Dreaming my dreams, is another high-quality album. You might even prefer it to Rambling man, but in any case, there's not much to choose between them for quality. Although the title track was a top ten country hit, the album's most famous songs are the two odes to past legends - Are you sure Hank done it this way (a country number one) and Bob Wills is still the king. Also worthy of mention are I recall a gypsy woman (originally a British top 20 pop hit for Don Williams, but not released as a single in America), The door is always open (a country number one for Dave and Sugar) and Let's turn back the years (an obscure Hank Williams song).

So, this collection brings together three of Waylon's finest albums and several previously unreleased tracks. If you are unfamiliar with Waylon's music, you might be better to buy RCA country legends, a double-CD containing all his big hits, but for those wanting to buy his original albums, it doesn't get any better than this.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-23

I am a big fan of Mark Lanegan and bought this ep (and the full disc) based off that fact. I was not disappointed and in fact was surprised and how nice Isobell Campbell's voice is (not being familar with her songs.) The two voices meld perfectly in Rambling Man give a modern sound at the same time it gives an almost 20s jazzy sound (amazingly cool.) And even the songs that Mark is not on sound great. My favorite song on the EP has the be the remake of the often redone never to this sucess of St. James Infirmry.

4 out of 5 stars "when the lord made me/he made a ramblin' man".......2006-02-18

Mark Lanegan, the former frontman for Screaming Trees, has been doing the dark alt.country thing for a while now; he's always done it well, but in this collaboration with Belle & Sebastian's Isobell Campbell he does it superbly. It takes a big voice and a swagger to successfully cover the Hank Williams-penned title track, and Lanegan has both. Though nobody can fill the cultural hole that Johnny Cash has left behind, Lanegan makes a good case that his weathered baritone can fill the sonic one.

Lanegan treats Campbell like his secret weapon, bringing her out slowly and purposefully. She lays down a soft accompaniment on the title track while handling some decidedly June Carter-esque harmonies on the wonderfully charming ballad "(Do You Wanna) Come Walk With Me." "Revolver Pt. 2" has Campbell bringing out her inner chateneuse to whispersing over Lanegan's creepy-barely-there guitar, a spectre singing to a ghost town. The track is affecting, minimal, striking, gorgeous. It's a black hole that would swallow up the other songs on most EPs, but to Lanegan's credit his other selections stand strong. Lanegan's voice is absent for the folk standard "St. James Infirmary," but in exchange we get the entrance of Campbell's cello and some heady gender swapping in her performance of the male narrator's voice.

The teases of harmony the duo hand us here are tantalizing, and one gets the sense that if both singers were to go at full-tilt we'd get sonic gold. The Ramblin Man EP is just a preview of the full length collaboration due some time later this year, and if the rest of the material is this good then it may be time to start firing up those Top 10 Lists.

    8.7/10

    4 out of 5 stars Isobel transcends.......2006-02-07

I've heard a lot of different versions of "Ramblin' Man," and this just may be the definitive one. Lanegan's weathered croak and Campbell's feathery delivery are beautifully juxtaposed. A great feel to this EP, with barely a hint of Belle and Sebastian.

4 out of 5 stars The Best is Yet to Come.......2005-12-17

This 4-song EP will only make you more excited to hear the full-length album in 2006.

    "Ramblin' Man" is brilliant.
