The men who haunt songs like "Better Off Broken," "Say Goodbye," and "Going, Going, Gone" on Ohioan Tammy Cochran's powerful and resolutely country debut album tend to be unfaithful, irresolute whiners and losers. The good news is that again and again Cochran finds thrilling musical inspiration and exhilarating self-empowerment in watching this parade of fools fade to nothingness in her emotional rear-view mirror. Whether on bittersweet fiddle- and steel-adorned ballads like "What I Learned from Loving You," triumphant celebrations of self-discovery like the sassy "So What," or a heartfelt personal memoir like "Angels in Waiting," Cochran consistently displays the wonderfully countrified poise and vocal artistry of a young 21st-century Tammy Wynette. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Tammy continues country tradition.......2004-10-17

Like the legend that she was named after, Tammy sings traditional country songs about life's ups and downs with real feeling. Sadly, Tammy Cochran emerged on the scene at a time when American country radio wasn't interested in traditional country music. It says a lot for Tammy's talents that she got as much airplay as she did, though nothing like as much as she deserved.

This is Tammy's debut album - there has been one since (Life happened, which I've already reviewed) but I'll be pleasantly surprised if any more are forthcoming. It includes a cover little-known oldie - What I learned from loving you. Kenny Rogers (on his album, We've got tonight) and Lynn Anderson (on her album on the Permian label) both recorded the song in 1983, Lynn's version being a country hit. I am a huge fan of both those singers but Tammy's version is as good as theirs.

The remaining songs are (as far as I know) all originals except Going going gone (a cover of a Sherrie Austin song, from her album, Following a feeling) and include the country hits If you can, So what and Angels are waiting, a song inspired by her brothers who were the victims of cystic fibrosis. Elsewhere, the album is full of songs about love's ups and downs, which Tammy performs superbly.

If you enjoy traditional country music, give Tammy a listen.

MY BABY BROTHER PASSED AWAY IN MAY THE DAY AFTER MOTHERS DAY AND I TOOK IT VERY HARD, MY BROTHER WAS 33YRS OLD AND HE LOVED COUNTRY MUSIC,THE DAY AFTER HE PASSED I SAT IN MY ROOM AND LISTENED TO COUNTRY CURRENTS ALL DAY,AT ONE POINT I HEARD THIS SONG PLAYING AND THE WORDS CAUGHT MY ATTENTION,I JUST CRIED AND THOUGHT HOW BEAUTIFUL THIS SONG IS,I FELT MY BROTHER COME TO ME AND IT WAS LIKE HE WAS TELLING ME "IM AT PEACE AND IM WAITING FOR MY WINGS,I HAVE NO MORE PAIN AND ILL ALWAYS BE YOUR GAURDIAN ANGEL"SO EVERYNIGHT I TALK TO HIM,HE IS THE BRIGHTEST STAR THAT SHINES,HE WAS ALWAYS OUT STANDING,THE WORDS TO ANGELS IN WAITNG IS TOUCHING AND VERY MOVING,I MISS MY BABY BROTHER,THANK U TAMMY FOR LETTING ME SHARE MY THAUGHTS.

5 out of 5 stars Great writing + powerful voice = stellar debut.......2003-01-05

I bought Tammy Cochran's first CD after hearing her heart-tugging single "Angels in Waiting". The song was written about her two brothers who were taken by Cystic Fibrosis. She co-wrote the song and wears her emotions on her sleeve. It is inspiring - my eyes tear up every time I hear it on the radio.

The rest of the CD does not disappoint, it is just as powerful. Big name writers abound - Roxie Dean and Jamie O'Neal ("So What"); Sherrie Austin ("Going, Going Gone") and Lisa Brokop ("Better Off Broken") - and Tammy also co-wrote 2 of the 10 songs. Her voice is BIG without being overpowering on "If You Can", a steel-guitar heavy song about making a tough choice. "So What" is about leaving 'Mr. Wrong' behind, and being better for it. "What I Learned From Loving You" is a ballad with a bit of a blues-vibe to it. "When Love Was Enough" is about when you are with the one you love and material things and money don't matter. My favorite songs - "Better Off Broken" and "I Cry" - are both upbeat songs about getting over someone, little by little.

I am shocked Tammy Cochran is not more popular already, but I think her star is definitely on the rise! Faith and Shania should try to be more like her

5 out of 5 stars About Angels in Waiting..........2002-08-13

When I hear that Tammy dedicated this song to 2 little boys that had passed away due to cystic fibrosis, I just had to listen to it. I must confess that I'm not much of a country fan, but this song has a place in my life now. I had never heard of this illness, up until my (now) 2 year old niece, Jasmine, was born with this affliction, and she holds my heart in her hands. When Tammy sings the lyrics, "they always knew they'd never grow old...", it's because the life span for those who are born with this, isn't as long as it should be. Some live such a short life, they barely have time to make a few memories to take with them. Lucky ones get past the age of 10, mabey 20, but not many enjoy life past 35 years of age. They have yet to find a cure for it. Tears come to my eyes now everytime that I listen to those words, and I long to give my life for my niece's. Though she's here with us now, it's a horrible feeling I get everytime I hold her, like she's already been taken from me. Thank you Tammy, for bringing this disease out in the open for so many, and thank you for giving me a song to sing to my niece, with all my heart...

In 2001, Tammy Cochran looked like Nashville's brightest new light. Wedding a strikingly powerful voice to first-rate material ("Angels in Waiting," which she wrote about her late brothers), Cochran found Top 10 success, a slot on a George Strait tour, and stellar reviews. But then it all began to fall apart. "Life Happened," a killer tune about high-school dreams and the dreariness of reality, failed to catch fire in 2002. And then she pretty much disappeared. Now the Ohioan returns with a low-key singer-songwriterish album, on which she wrote or cowrote 11 of the 12 cuts, most of which revolve around romance in all its stages. The album hits its stride with "Nobody's Home," a Lorrie Morganish, woman-to-woman ballad of domestic yearning, and with the title tune, a quasi-gospel walk on the road back from hell. But the material suffers a certain sameness, and the breakout rhythm numbers--where's the righteous anger on "As Soon as I'm Over You?"--play it too safe. Cochran can make a comeback, but Where I Am isn't particularly where she needs to be. --Alanna Nash

    4 out of 5 stars True Country.......2007-06-14

I almost feel like a grouch to give this less than 5 like all other reviewers. But it's because I'm a listener who needs a little bit more uptempo stuff. Everything else is very good on this album. Tammy has a good, kind of accented and smokey voice. This is solid county singing by a good female voice. Worthy of more radio play than she got. The songs are meaningful. Songs of note:

What Kind of Woman Would I Be - good guitar and drums. Good lyrics - the singer wonders if she could find it in her to leave a bad man and what would happen if she did

White Lies and Picket Fences - The singer remembers, with a feeling of tiredness and resignation, her dream of having a family and living in a home. But her man Billy bails out and leaves her pregnant and alone in a crummy apartment. "Sometimes I think about Billy, but most times I don't" is a good line.

Gettin There - one of Tammy's few uptempo tunes. The singer is moving on with life after a breakup

Life Happened - various high school chums' childhood dreams didn't come to pass, but they put together meaningful adult lives

I Used to Be that Woman

Dead of the Night - a little girl finally can't take the domestic violence of her drunken dad anymore and shoots him as he assaults her mommy again.

5 out of 5 stars Tammy lives up to her name.......2004-10-17

Tammy's parents named her after one of country music's legends (notwithstanding that Tammy Wynette's real name was Virginia), so they must have been proud when their daughter showed comparable musical ability. Tammy Wynette would also be proud, if she had lived long enough to hear Tammy Cochran sing. This was Tammy's second album. I fear that there may not be another because, unfortunately, country radio stations are not interested in traditional country music these days so Tammy didn't get enough airplay to make a big impact. Major record companies do not persevere the way they once did.

Tammy wrote two of the songs and co-wrote two of the others. If you can, one of the minor hits from Tammy's first album is reprised here but this album has eleven tracks compared to ten on her debut so ``` still get ten new tracks.

Tammy shows that she can sing ballads and up-tempo songs, but also demonstrates that life has had its good and bad times. This is particularly evident in the songs that she wrote or co-wrote. Dead of the night (about a marriage that ends in a shoot-out) is the kind of song that used to be accepted as part of what country music was all about. Elsewhere, the album contains some optimistic songs but is mainly filled with stories of broken relationships, of which the title track is typical..

Yes, this is a classic traditional country album by an outstanding singer that deserves a wider audience.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Thing.......2003-08-18

Back when people use to buy albums, the best songs were on the first few tracks of the first and second sides. Take my advice and start with track 7 (the title track) and go to the end. Then go back and play the whole CD. For most artists, this would be a greatest hits CD. There are no bad songs on this,(I hope)is only the 2nd of many more.

    5 out of 5 stars Refreshing talent.......2003-01-18

Tammy Cochran is unmistakably a country singer. The prominent steel guitar and her powerful voice are a combination that can't be matched, except maybe by the top-notch songwriting on this CD. The title song is a positive story of how sometimes reality can get in the way of your dreams, but you wouldn't change it for anything. It is one of my favorites, along with "All in How You Look at things" - about looking for the light at the end of the tunnel. "Love Won't Let Me" is about that someone that gives you butterflies, then "I'm Getting There" is her saying 'I'm over you...almost.' Tammy wonders about what might have been in "What Kind of Woman Would I Be". The most haunting song on the CD is "Dead of the Night".

Tammy Cochran sings of love, heartache and hope on her second CD and it absolutely blows me away each time I listen to it.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent cd.......2002-11-15

I'd never heard of Tammy Cochran until the new single Life Happened was on the radio. I didn't even know this was her second cd. The song Life Happened sold me on her incredible vocal talent right from the start. That song is amazing. It's one of the best "story" songs out there in country music now. Songs like this are what makes me listen to country music more and more. The words to the song really hook you in and hold you as you listen to find what the outcome will be. I can't imagine anyone loving country music and not being in love with the song Life Happened. If Tammy Wynette were alive today and still putting out cds i'm sure that she'd be singing music similar to Tammy Cochran's. Their vocal styles are remarkably similar if you listen closely. Tammy Whynette would be proud of this new and very talented artist. I wish her all the best in her career. She's gonna go far for sure. Her vocals have a lasting appeal, and many of her songs have a traditional country style to it that many of today's country artists are returning to. It's about time.

3 out of 5 stars The power and the oversinging of Martina McBride revisited.......2001-02-20

Cochran's obvious vocal talent provides her with the same dilemna that Martina McBride has faced over and over: how to sing in service of the song, rather than in service of the singing itself. McBride has periodically managed to find songs worthy of her scorching vocals (most notably, "Independence Day" and the "Wild Angels" LP). But more often than not, she's found herself just singing loudly, whether or not it was actually called for.

Cochran's single suffers the same problem. The vocal pyrotechnics would be more reasonably at home in a Star Search vocalist competition. Certain to wow the audience and judges, but taxing when heard in recorded form. Worse yet, the song itself has neither Gretchen Peters ("Independence Day") nor Matraca Berg ("Wild Angels") to provide lyrical emotion worthy of such vocal gymnastics.

Cochran vocal attack - either at her own behest, or the producer's urging - leaves the end result highly (and undeservedly) overwrought. Here's hoping that her future productions are able to reign in the excesses.

5 out of 5 stars We want more!!.......2000-09-03

I love the single & can't wait for the full CD. Just can't get enough of that great country music. Move over Faith, there's a new gal in town. Hope to see it in stores soon!

5 out of 5 stars Martina Move Over.......2000-07-15

Intoxicating is the only word to describe this new singer. Martina McBride is just going to move out of Tammy's way. To hear her sing is like listening to the angels sing. I believe this girl's got what it takes, and I can hardly wait for the new album to be released. I hope that this is not the end, but only the begining of something wonderful that the world has been waiting for. Like a breath of fresh air, it just makes you feel good all over. Thanks Tammy Cochran.

5 out of 5 stars FUTURE AWARD WINNER.......2000-07-15

After hearing "IF YOU CAN" on our local radio station, I knew I had to get this CD! This artist definitely puts her heart and soul in each song she sings. Looking forward to future releases from this soft-spoken yet powerful artist. Have also seen the music video of "IF YOU CAN"...loved it!! With so many new artists, her voice stands out as TRUE COUNTRY. No one should hesitate to purchase any music by this artist. Hope to see you on the Country Awards Tammy!!

I thought Tammy's voice is one of the best I have heard in awhile! I'm dissapointed in the way country music is going and it's refreshing to hear a new comer sing in the trational fashion. I hope to hear more from her.

3 out of 5 stars Martina McBride meets Jo Dee Messina.......2001-02-20

Cochran has the sort of immensely powerful voice that Martina McBride has alternately used to effect and to overblown bombast. On the other hand, she's able to drop the Star Search vocal pyrotechnics in favor of a Jo Dee Messina like swagger. The swagger beats the bombast on this release.

Aside from the vocal, the production is Modern Country Radio Standard. A hint of twang, but mostly big drums and studio-ace multitracking. One could easily imagine this being recorded more intimately, allowing more of the song's tough-but-tender heart to shine through. But that's not what major-label records are about; they're about radio play and number of units sold.

Cochran is a talented vocalist, and given the chance, she can inculcate a country sound into a production that's mostly straight-ahead pop. That's the yellow-brick road to commercial success in Modern Country, so it's hard to begrudge her her career choice. Still, one has to wonder what she's sound like with less mainstream material and an actual band backing her.

      5 out of 5 stars unique sound.......2000-10-10

Tammy has that old country sound to her voice that so many of the artists lack today. It is something unique and I'm glad to hear it in a young artist!
