Album Description

Do you prefer your Christmas with "sawdust on the floor and blood in its mouth?" (NME) If so, don't bother writing to Santa. Sure, he's a swell guy, but when it comes to "guitars so wild they must have been miked, mixed, and produced in the fiery depths of Hell" (Rolling Stone), St. Nick's axe-handlin' chops ain't what they used to be. But don't fret, this year everybody's favorite psychobilly clergyman Reverend Horton Heat has his own bag of treats for all the goodly little kats and kittens! We Three Kings has the holiday licks and tricks you've come to expect from the jolly ol' Rev. as he blazes through 12 classics and an original ("Santa on the Roof"). From "Frosty the Snowman" to "Winter Wonderland," Father Christmas is getting an IV of slapback and gin! So, raise a glass of nog and try to act nice... the Rev's making his list!

5 out of 5 stars a cool christmas.......2007-03-10

this is a great cd that spices up the regular old songs and makes them fun and happening. my toddler especially loves to dance to this cd. the reverend is in the genre psychobilly, a cross between rock and country with a great "rev-ed" up johnny cash feel.

i love the reverend so i really love this cd for christmastime.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Favorites...........2007-01-08

...done with good taste by the Rev. and the boys. What else can I say? I like it.

5 out of 5 stars Tired of the same old Christmas tunes?.......2006-11-30

This album is a cure for the tired old Christmas album. You're probably not going to want to listen to this album while you're grilling out over Labor Day, but this album gets a lot of play around my place in December. If you like the Reverend Horton Heat, then you're not going to be disappointed with this album. They have taken each of these traditional holiday tunes and added their own signature to them. I have enjoyed the album much more than I expected - its been the perfect soundtrack to put this Rockabilly fan in the Christmas spirit.

4 out of 5 stars The Rev rev's it up!!.......2006-01-05

This CD was the first really good Rock and Roll XMAS CD I have ever heard from an individual artist. I was shocked that Yep Roc did not do a better job getting this into stores and out there for public consumption. I did not see this in any retail outlet. "Jingle Bell's" simply smokes, and "Santa looks a lot like Daddy" was an instant classic to me. As mentioned in earlier reviews, the Rev's vocals did not exactly fit some of the slower #'s, but overall, this CD is a XMAS classic, and rocks like hell, WOW. It will be interesting to see if it is looked upon down the road as a landmark XMAS release for Rock and Roll fanatics.

4 out of 5 stars Rev Ho! Ho! Ho!.......2005-12-30

Pretty darn good. The Rev's voice isn't exactly made for Christmas tunes... as a result there are a few tracks that aren't quite up to par with the rest of the album. BUT!!!! The instramental numbers are wonderful! They are a great chance for the boys to let fly and show just what good musicians they really are. Hard to believe that the same guys that did Bales of Cocaine and 5-0 Ford could make a Christmas album, but the pulled it off. Enjoy!

Life & 20, the second album from Springfield, Missouri, trio the Domino Kings, is a fun-filled tour of late-'50s and early-'60s country music, from rockabilly rave-ups to honky-tonk murder ballads. The songs are typically solid, the playing first rate throughout. What really makes the album stand out, though, is that the Kings, virtually alone among their retro-twang brethren, also adore the Nashville Sound. Better yet, they understand that old-school masters like Faron Young, Johnny Cash, and Marty Robbins were Nashville Sounders. Through 14 originals, the band combines hardcore twang and drive with a smooth country-pop sheen and dynamic arrangements. Best of the bunch is "Will He Be," a riff-driven rocket of a record that would've made Johnny Horton jealous. --David Cantwell

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Honky-Tonk Heaven.......2001-03-10

This is a tremendous record. If you like your country with plenty of swagger and muscle, this record is for you. The band works in the honky-tonk genre while sounding fresh and new, a very tough proposition. "Alice" is fierce, as it "Will He Be." Great record all the way through. Long live the Kings!

4 out of 5 stars Fine 2nd LP of rockabilly-influenced country.......2000-11-24

The terrific opener "Borrow a Lie" is the sort of tune that Dwight Yoakam or the Mavericks' Raul Malo would wallow in at the bottom of their bottomless voices. And though the Domino Kings' may not have a vocalist of such legendary stature, they still conjure the same sort of busted romance with their twangy three-piece rockabilly-influenced country.

Waltz-time ballads play back-to-back with up-tempo rockabilly to provide the sort of range heard from early pioneers like Carl Perkins. The Domino Kings are equally at home on weepers like "One More Day," and break-neck shuffles like "Steppin' Out Again." They can play gentle acoustics or crank up a bluesier side for a taste of honky-tonk grit.

What really distinguishes their music is that it comes from the heart, rather than the head. Like fellow "neo" singer Robert Gordon, the 'Kings play country and rockabilly music rather than country and rockabilly style.

3 out of 5 stars For the Record.......2007-07-03

Young Roy Orbison WAS a rockabilly god. His Sun records stuff is great and very different from his 60's underdog balladeer image. Rock House, You're My Baby, Domino, Mean Little Mama, Claudette... all killer stuff.

4 out of 5 stars A revelation.......2005-01-05

No one would claim young Roy was a rockabilly God, but his formative years at Sun yielded a few classics, as well as paving the way for his later magnificent successes. What I didn't realize was how good the Teen Kings were. I think ANY live tapes of real rockabilly music is worth listening to, and these guys were a real band. Roy's rather nervous, quirky rockabilly vocal style was unique, much different that the astonishly rich instrument it later proved to be, yet very effective on these live performances. This is raw, pure, important stuff.

2 out of 5 stars Lost and Found....I wish they hadn't!!!.......2002-10-02

A collection of live local Radio and Television performances that pale in comparison to Roy Orbison and the Teen Kings Studio performances. The only interesting/redeeming part of this CD is the rambling telephone conversation with the Teen Kings on the very last track. Wanna here the Teen Kings??? Get the Roy Orbison Sun Years CD on Rhino.

5 out of 5 stars We're goin' to the Rock House!.......2002-04-25

The Teen Kings was where the Big O started out. He sang and played lead guitar and ripped it up on stage with hits like "Go! Go! Go!" and "Brown Eyed Handsome Man." His voice is wonderful and strong and leads the band through many of the songs. Their version of "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" displays how he can make his voice both smooth and pulsating at the same time, as he does in many other tracks on the CD. Pick up a copy of this CD and you'll surely be at the Rock House!

5 out of 5 stars RAW ORBISON.......2001-03-23

THE BEST NEW ROY ORBISON CD TO COME ALONG IN MANY YEARS. EVERY TRACK IS JUMPING RAW ENERGY; A TOTAL JOY TO LISTEN TO OVER AND OVER AGAIN. SURE HOPE THEY FIND MORE LIVE TAPES BY THE TEEN KINGS. ANYONE THAT ENJOYS ROY ORBISON, OR JUST ROCK-A-BILLY, MUST HAVE THIS CD. HONEST!

Album Description

The Domino Kings began in 1993 in Springfield, Missouri. Fronted by Hermitage, MO, native Stevie Newman (guitarist-singer-songwriter), they are purveyors of a unique combination of contemporary alt-country and retro honky-tonk that gives a strong nod to Buck Owens, Merle Haggard, and fellow Missouri native Wynn Stewart. With Some Kind of Sign, the Domino Kings are sure to break out of the Midwest on the Big Noise from Springfield tour.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Shades of Buck, Blasters and Mavericks from Springfield, MO.......2005-09-06

The fourth CD from this Springfield, MO combo introduces more personnel changes, but with founding guitarist/singer/songwriter Stevie Newman at the helm, the Kings continue to produce some of the finest country and honky-tonk music around. Changes in bass players and guitarists haven't diluted the Kings' twangy roots in '50s rockabilly, '60s Bakersfield country, and South-of-the-Border tinged balladry ala The Mavericks.

Newman doesn't have the operatic voice of Raul Malo, but he sings with the same full-throated conviction on the Tex-Mex shuffle "Pain in My Past." The band plays with the sort of roots-soaked electric fervor of The Blasters on the driving title tune, and swings the honky-tonk on "It's All Over But the Crying." They also unplug for the bluesy acoustic rockabilly of "Don't Want to Do That Again," and dial it down for the western swing weeper "Every Night About This Time" and the murder-ballad "Bridges I've Burned."

The Kings continue to be the most traditional country band on the Springfield scene, and one of the best twang-minded combos in the country. Stevie Newman sticks to the meat-and-potatoes country and honky-tonk that is his forte, but rearticulated with flourishes that keep it fresh. [©2005 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

4 out of 5 stars Kings of Nuthin' is Finally Back!!!!!! .......2006-04-07

I had waited to hear this CD for 3 years, and finally got it. My first impression was not as great as when I first heard "Fight Songs," but I felt a classic Kings Of Nuthin' style back in shape. Unlike the previous releases, there are a large number of covers here. Actually, some covers are very good: "Nation on Fire" is my favorite cover track, followed by "For You" and "Tore Up." Maybe I had a super high expectation from them (because of phenomenal "Fight Songs"), and that pushed me to raise the standard of judging their music. Nonetheless, there are exceptional tracks here, such as "Over the Counter Culture," "If I were You," and "Only Time." I especially like the piano part that bears the foundation of most songs, not to mention that the piano solo in "Tore Up" is one of the magnificent moments in this CD. I also love the vocal part; the singer has such a distinguished voice that goes well along with the back instrumentation. Speaking of instrumentation, it is still in top notch, and is highly produced. The CD artwork is also neat. Only drawback goes to the duration of the CD, it is only above 30 minites: I want to hear more Kings Of Nuthin'. Overall, this is another decent release by one of the anticipated band and I'm looking forward to seeing them in live: their live performance is something thrilling. This is kind of music that you should listen it over this summer!

Album Description

Formed by eight proud street hoodlums and hailing from the Irish mecca of Boston, The Kings Of Nuthin' are an unlikely punk rock outfit equipped with the instrumentation of a full piece rhythm & blues band from the fifties - an upright bass, a horn section, piano player, guitarist, lead singer, and even a washboard player! Well known across the East Coast for their out of control live sets The Kings Of Nuthin' are a unique blend of psychobilly. Imagine the result of Bill Haley & The Comets or Little Richard and the Upsetters growing up in a punk rock environment, acquiring the drinking habits of Charles Bukowski, and hammering out their songs at twice the required speed. Fight Songs is The Kings' second album. 15 tracks. Disaster. 2002.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars So Good-!.......2006-02-25

I caught the Kings Of Nuthin' a couple of years ago when they opened up for the Ducky Boys. Their live performrance just blew me away and I ordered it soon after the show and I was hooked with it for a long time. The instrumentation is very profesisonal and the production is much more superior, compared to their previous record "Get Busy Livin' or Get Busy Dyin'." I like the instrumental song "La Chupacabra" because it provides a good combination of piano, guitar, bass (so heavy here), and hones. Most songs are fast-driving and enjoyable. There are also songs like "Callin' To Let You Know" and "Nuthin' To Lose", which is slow and give us a good chill. I cannot wait until I grab a new CD "Over The Counter Culture" because it should be great after hearing a couple of sample songs. I would say that the Kings of Nuthin' should not limited their fan base to punk scene, but they have a potential to widen their audience in general because their music deserves a good reputation among majority! For the fans of Rock N' Roll, Jazz, Blues, Ska, and Punk, this album is crucial.

2 out of 5 stars Okay band, but...........2005-05-08

These guys have a lot of potiential and a good stage show and this album shows that they will probably keep getting a bigger following....but these guys aren't all from boston and some ain't Irish either....thus by lying about such things they lose quite a bit of steet cred...tell the truth New Hampshire boyz!

5 out of 5 stars Rockabilly with a hard edge.......2002-09-27

This is a great CD. The Kings of Nuthin are a high energy live band that really capture an audience. They basically are a rockabilly band going full force fronted by a Boston punk/hc guy. The result is a truly unique and wonderful sound. I think the material was better on their previous album. However, this album captures the energy of their live show much better. I've been giving this one some heavy listening.

5 out of 5 stars Exuberant Rockabilly.......2002-09-21

If you want intense -- lyrics, beat, riffs -- this is for you. These guys are hot; burning. The cuts on this CD drive from one to the next and never let up. They will help you Drive All Night... back to Boston.

a band was able to make me rest my Nekromantix- and Reverend Horton Heat-CDs! Dead Kings, kind of a psychobilly allstars (members of Nekromantix, Mad Sin, Batmobile among others) band, has really hit the spot as far as I'm concerned. This contains a fine mixture of psychobilly, punk and heavy metal...a bit like Bad Religion playing psychobilly. I've had this CD for months now, and tracks like "Dead Kings Ball", "The Other Side" and "White Trash on the Sniff" stills seems fresh. And furthermore...unlike a lot of psychobillybands, these guys seem to have taken a political stand lyric-wise.
