Though more often compared to and associated with Willie, Waylon, and even Hank Jr. for his renegade Nashville-rumbling status, David Allan Coe bears more than a passing resemblance (musically, that is) to Merle Haggard. On 1999's Recommended for Airplay, boozy two-step shuffles like "Drink My Wife Away" and the wink-wink-nudge-nudge "Drink Canada Dry" seem as if they could easily have been plucked from the Hag's canon. And while the wholly new material on Recommended is all but pickled in alcohol references and tends toward redneck rock stereotype, Ray Kennedy's ace production and acoustic inflections keep things from falling off the wagon. Additionally, Coe has enlisted swell backing singers and a crackerjack band that smokes on electric wah-wah guitar, whirling Hammond organ, slide, and steel. A kinder, gentler Coe who's lived through the good old bad days, he offers fine moments on the gentle "In My Life" and the jaded "She's Already Gone": "If the proof's in the pudding, the cake's in the oven." --Paige La Grone

People
While most of the songs have [Coe's] familiar, country-boy slant, there's always the feeling that he's trying to be something he isn't.

4 out of 5 stars David Allan Coe is an American Treasure.......2005-03-01

This album gets played on cd jukeboxes here in Florida, it's become a standard. I love DAC and hope more people discover his music. He's country, he's rock, he's rap, he's jam band, and he has fans from all walks. Truly a unique artist, deserving of superstar status.

5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.......2003-12-03

The quote at the top of the page says Coe sounds like he's trying to be something he isn't, but that's not the case and exactly what the !#$% does that mean? This is an excellent CD! The songs on this one are superb!

4 out of 5 stars DAC Keeps Rockin.......2002-01-24

After his years of the Outlaw craze of the 70's,and the more commercially acceptable releases in the 80's,David Allan Coe successfully combines the off the wall genius of his early albums with the more radio friendly sound of his later releases. His previous "Live" release reminded fans how great Coe is on stage, while this release shows his talent for writing some great country tunes. "The Price We Have To Pay","A Harley Someday","Drank My Wife Away",and "Drink Canada Dry" sound like classic Coe,while songs like "Mississippi","We Can Talk",and"Let Me Be The One" take him down a more bluesy course. "She's Already Gone" is the classic on this CD,while"Song For The Year 2000" will offend many who won't get the underlying theme of acceptance that Coe seems to be trying to get across. The only let down is "Sweet Rebecca",which steals the opening strains of "Amie" by Pure Prairie League. The song is an ok love song, but Coe has done better in the past with his own melodies("Would You Lay With Me","You Can Count On Me","Would You Be My Lady" and "Jody Like A Melody" among others). It's just great to still have guys like DAC,Waylon,Hank Jr,and Haggard still around to remind these lame country acts today what real music is all about.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......1999-09-24

This is real country music. Thank you, David Allan Coe, for staying with the real thing. I am disgusted by virtually all that passes as country music today. "Drink Canada Dry" may be the best country song of all time, after, of course, "You Never Even Called Me By My Name."

5 out of 5 stars DAC Is Running Right Over The Generation Gap.......1999-06-26

This album is a tribute to a man who has fought his whole life to be recognized as an individual. By recording all his own music, in his own way, David Allan Coe is continuing to break generational barriers and present his perspecitive and unique music to a whole new and younger audience as well as satisfying the appetites of all us older, diehard Coe fans. Thank you David Allan Coe from the rebel in all of us! Now, Let's Go "Drink Canada Dry"!
