5 out of 5 stars Outstanding - one of the best Pushstars albums yet!.......2006-08-06

I've been following the Pushstars for almost 10 years now, and I can honestly say that "Paint the Town" is one of the best albums the band has produced. The number of upbeat, energetic tunes ("In the Galaxy," "Lucky Sevens," and "Keg on my Coffin") balances nicely with some quieter ballads ("Outside of a Dream," "At Sea"). As always, Chris Trapper's lyrics complement catchy melodies without compromising on intelligence or meaning. Each song is a story that carries you along with it. Another great addition to a fine body of music from one of Boston's best original bands!

5 out of 5 stars What a great album.......2005-07-22

I bought about 1000 cd's in my life so far and this is one of a few cd's that I can play, from the beginning to the end, without skipping any track.
Awesome, the Push Stars got me hooked forever.

5 out of 5 stars Most underrated band in the world!.......2005-02-19

Push Stars is the best band in this genre of music. Their music is done with such a passion that is hard to believe they are not in the mainstream. But you know what? I even prefer that way. Not that I don't want them to make money and be more successful, that's out of me. It's just that if any of the songs off any of their albums get airplay, it will be overplayed and that tends to make it dislikable eventually. That's the worst thing that can happen to a band.

About "Paint the town", here goes my review:

1) Claire: Awesome start, a somewhat dark song, but a perfect beginning. (5/5)
2) Outside of a dream: A mellow song, with heartfelt lyrics. The chorus is simply perfect! (5/5)
3) In the galaxy: An underrated song, but for me it's one of the best in the album. Chris' voice is really passionate in this one (5/5)
4) Lucky sevens: Catchy sound with a catchy chorus. Very good work in here (5/5)
5) Every angel : Again another flawless work (5/5)
6) Freedom: my least fav in the album, but still a very honest song with very good lyrics (5/5)
7) Paint the town: Another of my favs, this catchy tune will hook you up from the beginning. Funny and cheerful song (5/5)
8) Hanging by a thread: Sad and mellow song, yet one of my favs. Once more, the chorus is the standout here (5/5)
9) At sea: this song grows on you as you listen to it over and over. There's an instrumental part in the middle of it that just blows my mind! (5/5)
10) Dream came down: the faster song in the album, it's similar to Meltaway from their previous work. Very singable and even danceable, this sound will cheer you up, believe me. One of the best! (5/5)
11) Keg on my coffin: Similar to In the galaxy and Freedom, except that this one has fantastic lyrics. The thing about this song is the lyric, very clever and very true. (5/5)
12) Drifting away: A different and unique sound, it has much of the brazilian style called bossa-nova (I'm brazilian, by the way). I personally like it a lot, it's a good close to an amazing album, one of his best efforts to date. (5/5)

Strongly recommended! Also, try their 3 previous albums and their E.P. called tonight, they're all top notch, as well as this one!

4 out of 5 stars hootie (if they were good).......2005-02-01

i'm normally not a fan of 4/4 rock like this. there is nothing edgy or out of the ordinary about push stars. frankly, they would fall in the same category as huey lewis or hootie & the blowfish... EXCEPT... they write such great songs. my take on music is that a great song is a great song, be it rock, jazz, rap, country, etc... lyrically, even, there is nothing really revealing or special... but those songs stick like a juju bee in your filling. they defy all my expectations of what a "typical" bar band can do... don't expect new revelations. expect what 1000's of bands have done before, just done better.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible from start to glorious finish.........2004-07-29

Bouncy rock and roll meets a seemingly endless supply of positive energy and soul in this album. Here are some guys who know how to rock. They need to get more popular so they can spread their music further into the mainstream, thus loosening mediocre music's grip on our world. Mediocre this album is not.
With tracks like "Outside of a Dream", "Lucky Sevens" and "Dream Came Down" you will have these lyrics memorized in record time. These guys are what the future of music needs to be: they're fun, and they put on one hell of a live show. I saw them open for Great Big Sea in Philadelphia this past spring, and they held their own marvelously. After a week with this album in your discman you'll be listening to it from start to finish again and again. Listen to the wailing, synthesized opening of "Lucky Sevens" and you get chills. The optimistic, cheerful and drunken lyrics of "Keg on my Coffin" can make anyone smile.
Insanely addictive and almost suspiciously talented, you need this album.

5 out of 5 stars End of a short era.......2004-03-11

The third and last original album featuring the original line-up of this rocking country group maintained the standard set by the first two, although only three singles were released - four were released from each of the others. Like the first two albums, this is a generally up-tempo album but there are also some great ballads.

The first single, Who's lonely now, topped the country chart while two other singles (Walking talking crying barely beating broken heart, This side of goodbye) both made the country top ten. One more single featuring this line-up, Someone else's trouble now, can be found on Greatest hits.

Several other songs could have been country hits, including If love had a heart, I can't love you baby and I'll paint the town. There are also excellent covers of Midnight angel, one of Barbara Mandrell's country hits from the mid-seventies, and Sweet baby James, written by James Taylor. Two other wonderful songs (While you slept last night, Rough and tumble heart) were co-written by Pam Tillis, who made it as a singer a year or two later.

If you enjoy upbeat country music in general or any of Highway 101's other music in particular, you'll love this album.

5 out of 5 stars Best Damn Band .......2006-05-10

If you want your music loud, proud, and just plain ass fun you need to add three of these to your collection. I have followed David, Allan, Jason, Gerard and Conrad since the early 90's. I followed them from Houston to Austin to San Antone to New Orleans' Tipitina's to the dives of Mississippi and I would quit my current job to do it again. Covers of the Fabulous T-Birds to their own boot thompin' originals grace this double CD and bring smiles to my face. If you ever get the chance to see them perform live haul ass to the venue, get there early, drink a Lone Star, eat a Moon Pie while your honey slams back an RC (lable out), and get strapped in for the ride of your life. Buy this album NOW!!!!! You will never take it out of your car stereo, your home stereo, or your friend's stereo. Hence, buy three now.

5 out of 5 stars Listen Again.......2006-03-25

This album is sweet I don't care what you art house goons think.
If you like Refused or just metal or hardcore you will like this album, better than most of the mainstream crap out there, and subtley unique as well. Its hard to give them credit with all of the great metal/hardcore albums released this year. Thank God for Painkillers, and Burning Bridges is so 1999, are good song titles, as well as good songs, angsty, maybe, not too emo which is good, and overall fun to listen to, piss on the other reviews.

3 out of 5 stars Repetitive and like the rest.......2006-03-16

Crushing riffs and furious vocals...but oh so repetitive and like the rest.

3 out of 5 stars One Dead Three Wounded "Paint the Town" 3 1/2 stars!.......2006-02-13

Philadelphia based hardcore band, One Dead Three Wounded, recall the classic Cave-In album Until Your Heart Stops as well as American Nightmare (Give Up The Ghost) with the re-release of their debut, Paint the Town. The one thing that this five piece seems to do really well is to combine the Gothenburg leads of At The Gates (see ""Eight Dollar Prom Dress"") with the old school hardcore brutality of an American Nightmare or even Throwdown. Their influences in the hard rock genre are evident as well on the song ""Ghosts"" where they break out some southern-rock riffs that give off a Pantera like groove which shouldn't come as a surprise as many of the new hardcore and metalcore bands have borrowed from the kings of American metal. In fact, this disc is full of great Gothenburg/Pantera influenced riffs! The instrumental ""Welcome Home Tragedy"" is a moody delay driven track that has a brooding intensity that would be nice to see the band explore a little more. This is probably the best track on the album as it expands on an atmospheric hardcore sound that the Cave-In have just recently started to come back to themselves. I would never suggest this album to a straight ahead metal fan, though there are enough leads in this album to appease a metal head, so if you're into Throwdown, American Nightmare or old school Cave-In-this album is worth checking out.

2 CD for only 6$ plus shipping and handling is a good price. The quality and the choices of tunes are good and the quality of recording is good too. The orchestras, the singers and the choirs are good too. So, if the titles of tunes please you, it is a good 2-CD boxset to buy. If you are an American, I am sure that you know all these tunes. If you are not an American, you will say to yourself : "I think that I have heard this song somewhere."
