Johnny Cash has long been both country legend and American icon. But once upon a time, in the late '60s, Cash was something more mercurial--pop culture superstar. This 26-song, previously unreleased concert recorded in December 1969 at a Madison Square Garden packed with 21,000 enthusiastic fans from across the cultural and political spectrum documents what's arguably the peak of Cash's career. One story-song slides naturally into the next in a set that not only documents the high points of his already rich and colorful career, but paints a compelling autobiography of the singer and his hardscrabble roots. Whether taking a bold antiwar stance as a "dove with claws" (imagine a post-Lee Greenwood country star being as brave) on "Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream," taking a tough, unflinching look at prison life in a four-song stretch book-ended by "The Long Black Veil" and "Folsom Prison Blues," or examining the plight of the Native American and his own religious beliefs, Cash gives a performance that underscores the honesty and integrity that made him a conquering American folk hero. The singer's generosity toward his backing musicians and songwriters is also noteworthy, acknowledging Shel Silverstein's presence as the writer of his massive hit "A Boy Named Sue," turning over the show to the Carter Family for a couple slices of Appalachian roots music, and letting the Statler Brothers showcase "Flowers on the Wall" and fellow Sun legend-turned-sideman Carl Perkins rip through an explosive, show-stopping "Blue Suede Shoes." Cash's presence here is more than mere performance; it's a frank reminder that American values remain considerably more complex than nostalgia, apple pie, and flag-waving. --Jerry McCulley

We can't stop loving you, Elvis !!!.......2007-04-13
The concert recording, so well remastered by BMG Recording Studios, begins with "Also Sprach Zarathustra (Theme From 2001: A Space Odyssey.)" This brief yet auspicious theme gets the audience all worked up for Elvis to come onstage. Elvis launches into rousing renditions of "That's All Right" and "Proud Mary" as the crowd loves every second of it. Elvis then switches gears to a slower paced "Never Been To Spain;" and by this time the audience is in total ecstasy. "That's All Right" also features great drums and horns; and the guitars work wonders for the musical arrangement for "Proud Mary," too.
Throughout the rest of the concert Elvis alternates between songs with faster and slower tempos; but they all work well and Elvis bats them all straight out of the ball park! Some incredible numbers Elvis performs include the gorgeous love ballad "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me;" a sublime cover of "The Impossible Dream" with its great use of the piano and "For The Good Times." Elvis sings them all with great sensitivity. Excellent!
Of course, it couldn't be a proper Elvis concert without some of his signature songs. We get classic Elvis numbers including "Heartbreak Hotel;" the beautiful "Love Me Tender" from Elvis' first movie; a slower than usual paced "Hound Dog" that breaks out into a rousing, rapid fire red hot number and "Suspicious Minds," one of Elvis' most beautiful numbers.
Elvis also receives terrific backup from J. D. Sumner & The Stamps, The Sweet Inspirations and Kathy Westmoreland. The orchestra is conducted by Joe Guercio.
The concert ends with two wonderful, full of punch numbers: "I Can't Stop Loving You" and "Can't Help Falling In Love." These two songs provide a strong ending for this concert.
The quality of the sound is good considering that this is a recording of a live concert; and the liner notes include the song credits, too. The art work reflects good judgment.
One mystery exists, for me at least: the CD clocks in at roughly 53 minutes. I find it hard to believe that Elvis' complete and unedited concert lasted a mere 53 minutes. I must wonder if this recording includes all the songs Elvis sang at this particular concert. In any event, this CD is so good I will choose to overlook this possible flaw and give it five stars anyway! It deserves it.
Overall, I highly recommend this CD for Elvis fans. Elvis obviously loved every minute of this concert. Elvis' voice displays his strength and yes, he WAS at the top of his game for this concert. Fans of rock and pop will also enjoy this live concert CD.

Elvis Rocks the Big Apple.......2006-07-06
An Absolutely Stellar Performance .......2006-06-15
What I got was a powerhouse show that might be one of the finest live albums I've ever heard. The energy of the band and Elvis himself that night is infectious, with a great set list of songs and the tight performance of a band at the peak of their abilities. I was especially impressed with Ronnie Tutt's drumming and the Bass playing of Jerry Scheff.
As for Elvis himself, he sounds at the top of his game. And the King at his best is unequaled as a singer and performer. He seems eager to meet the challenge of playing MSG and delivers the songs with energy and passion. Shows like this must be the reason Elvis became as huge as he did.
This is one of the best live Elvis albums ever!.......2006-06-12

Description
Rolling Stone magazine famously called Phish "America's Greatest Jam Band," and while Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon, and Page McConnell called it quits as a group last year, their legend lives on. Formed at University of Vermont in 1983, Phish quickly became heirs to the jam band tradition, taking the roots of musical improvisation to a new level and beyond. Of all their now-legendary shows, their 1995 New Year's Eve concert at Madison Square Garden-a masterful blend of composition, theater and improvision-is revered as one of their finest, even by the band themselves. Marking this stellar concert's 10th anniversary, Rhino's deluxe 3-CD release presents the Phenomenal Phish at the peak of their powers. Track Listings: Punch You In the Eye, Sloth, Reba, Squirming Coil, Maze, Colonel Forbin's Ascent, Fly Famous Mockingbird, Shine, Fly Famous Mockingbird, Sparkle, Chalk Dust Torture, Audience Chess Move, Drowned, Lizards, Axilla (Part II), Runaway Jim, Strange Design, Hello My Baby, Mike's Song, Gamehendge Time Factory, Auld Lang Syne, Weekapaug Groove, Sea and Sand, You Enjoy Myself, Sanity,Frankenstein, Johnny B. Best Phish release of any kind.......2007-04-14
The show opens with an extremely energetic PYITE. The band are on fire and working together seamlessly. This is the energy of Live Phish 6 (Centrum) and the jamming coordination of LP 4 (Drum Logos). There's a brief move through The Sloth that takes the band into an extended Reba in which Page is playing perfectly and brilliantly. He is absolutely inspired; toward the end of the jam the others get out of his way and let him just explore the song. This is one of the best Rebas in existence. There's a great Squirming Coil, a nice Maze, and a fun long sequence of Colonel Forbin > Fly Famous Mockingbird, which is broken up to include a monologue by Trey and a cover of the pop song Shine that surpasses the original. Sparkle's great as always, and they end the first set with a blistering Chalkdust in which Trey is completely in control of the song and just flies.
Set two begins with Drowned and The Lizards, and this is one of the best Lizards out there. The whole show is filled with Gamehenge mythology, and Lizards is done with an obvious affection from the band. It's a lot of fun to hear the audience go wild for the helping phriendly book. There's a quick Axilla with a lot of power and then the definitive Runaway Jim. This is better than the great Runaway on Brooklyn, with huge energy and great coordination, the band just completely rock out. Strange Design lets the audience cool off and is really beautifully done. Hello My Baby is always a sign of huge things to come, and the Mike's Song that closes out set two is indescribable. It starts off loud and rocking, but transions into something more ominous, and right around 12 minutes in the band just hit the zone. This is one of those moments when the jam just feels completely perfect, the kind of groove that a studio performance can never achieve because it's so obviously feeding off the energy in the audience. The band just layer the music and Mike supplies an exceptional rhythm and Fish is perfect. There's an even more ominous closing, and the second set ends.
The third set opens with the ambient performance of the band as the Gamehenge Time Lab scientists and break into Auld Lang Syne at midnight. This is a great performance that segues into the Weekapaug Groove, which is fast and tight. There's a relaxing Sea and the Sand and a great YEM. They close out with Sanity and Frankenstein and give a wild Johnny B. Goode encore.
The mix is wonderfully done. Balanced all around with beautiful highs in Page's keys that play off Mike's rich bass which just fills the room. Trey's guitar sounds bright and vibrant and Fish's drums are just the right distance, with his cymbals sounding more real than on poorly done digital mixes. Cymbals are the toughest sound to mix on the CD format, but they've done a great job here with the mics and board mix. The stage is deep and the audience is coming through enough to make you feel like you're at a live show without being at all invasive.
This is the best release in the Phish catalog. Add Live Phish 4, 11, and 18 and you have in four volumes a great sketch of everything that made Phish the most inspired and talented live act of the past twenty years. A superb release.
GOTTA GET IT! .......2007-01-12

My new FAVORITE Phish show!.......2006-04-04
My favorite non-Phish treat would have to be the Quadrophenia gem "Sea and Sand," man they are ripping up YEM as I type this. Whoever you are, if you read this, and you like Phish and you have not heard this album, please obtain it, hear it, stream it, you gotta hear this jam.
Please we have no regrets.......2006-03-18

Great Vocals! But No June, and Live Prison Albums are Better!.......2006-07-06
AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN has great sounding vocals, but the guitars are buried in the mix, so they lose their punch, especially on songs like "Big River," when the instruments have a lot to do with how catchy the song is in the first place.
June Carter is home, six months pregnant, but all of the other (backup) singers sound GREAT! After the first 20 minutes or so, Johnny leaves the stage (!) and lets the other singers do some songs. Is this an influence from his TV show era?
Carl Perkins does his "Blue Suede Shoes," the Statler Brothers sound EXACTLY like their studio harmonies on "Flowers on the Wall," and the rest of the Carter Family ladies sound terrific, as usual! Though he has so many other singers onstage, I am surprised that they don't sing backup on ALL the songs, only on about a third or less.
Johnny talks A LOT before most songs, explaining who, how, why, and what details about most songs. Johnny sings a lot of his folky, common man themed songs, instead of all his biggest hits. Some BIG hits get shortchanged, like "Walk the Line" and "Ring of Fire," so that's a negative.
The booklet is very informative. Overall, this is a very nice CD.
AT SAN QUENTIN is his best live album, with more aggresive guitar sounds, and the only one with a hit from the live version, "A Boy Named Sue." AT FOLSOM PRISON is probably more famous sounding, and it was his comeback album, and featured in the WALK THE LINE biography film. If you already have those two, then get this one. Otherwise, I would recommend SAN QUENTIN first, then FOLSOM, then this one.
If you are new to Johnny Cash, I recommend that you start with THE LEGEND OF JOHNNY CASH, from the American record label. It has all his biggest career hits, sounding GRRREAT!
Johnny's best Gospel CD is GOSPEL GLORY, in my opinion, so far, but I don't have all of his Gospel CDs yet.
JOHNNY CASH READS THE NEW TESTAMENT is my favorite Gospel project, where he does a spoken word reading of the entire New Testament of the Bible, across 16 CDs, for a very good price from amazon.com. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Johnny Cash reading the book of REVELATION, on one CD from the set, is really cool, if you think about it.
This IS Johnny Cash!.......2006-03-01
Can't say "son of a bitch" on stage........2006-02-24
Columbia CASHes in, still good though........2004-02-04
The copyright says 2002, and I was curious as to why this hadn't been released earlier. If it was another raucous, rocking Folsom style performance, surely it would have made sense to release it decades ago.
I rated it three stars - but I want to make it clear, those are 3 Johnny Cash stars - it's still good, but just different from other live releases. It doesn't showcase the things I personally enjoy most about Johnny Cash, and while I'm sure there are plenty of archived performances that would blow my socks off, this isn't one of them.
Negatives:
His voice doesn't seem to be in great shape. At one point, he apoligizes, "I'm sorry, my voice..." and it trails off, whether he thought twice about bringing attention to the fact, or it was edited later, I don't know. He sings mostly in his lower register, with quite a bit of his unique quavering. Songs where it's most evident he just can't muster the melody or energy that I've heard on other recordings are :
I Still Miss Someone
Wreck of the Old 97
A Boy Named Sue
Bob Wootons guitar doesn't have the punch of the San Quentin recording. In my opinion it's less unique sounding, and more typical. I don't have the album handy to see who was playing lead on that track, but it's a phenomenal guitar line, with energy that isn't equalled anywhere on the Madison Square Garden album.
The overall feel of the concert is more sedate, so "Blue Suede Shoes", and "Flowers on the Wall" seem out of place to the point of being misplaced.
Positives/Miscelaneous:
He plays a good number of ballads. So if that's your preference, than this is a good pick. I still think that even the softer songs would benefit from Cash breaking out a few higher notes, but he plays plenty of melancholy songs at this show, and the Carter family songs go well with this atmosphere.
It's packaged pretty well, with enough photos of Mr. Cash as well his band and the guest performers. Photo Credits include "archive", "Getty", one by George Kalinsky, and some by Don Hunstein, none really remarkable.
All in all, a decent disc for those who prefer his ballads, but there are many other albums to choose from, over 100 albums from 1957-2002.
Johnny Cash at Madison Square Garden.......2003-04-05
CD. As a lover of Cash's music,I can testify to the beauty
of the music contained herein. Much like the Johnny Cash
show on TV,this live performance is great and fast-paced.
To me,there is nothing like a live performance of anything.
It is truly beautiful. I recommend this CD trememdously.
Once you start listening to it,you will never want it to
put it down.
