Hot Lunch

Editorial Reviews

Austin, Texas's Asylum St. Spankers take their genre-melding to the hilt, provided the genres are all forms of American music pre-1940. On Hot Lunch, the 10-piece collective mixes hot jazz, ragtime, blues, kitsch, and country into an amalgam of its own, with goofy lyrics and plenty of humor. The Squirrel Nut Zippers are an obvious comparison, but the Spankers' focus is on strings, not brass, and these tunes don't need to swing to work. On "U.F.O. Attack," the group pays homage to Spike Jones with plenty of musical saw and washboard, the title track is a Gypsy-inspired romp, and "Island Angel" is a soft Hawaiian ballad. Coproducer Bob Brozman even joins in on a few songs and adds some serious instrumental chops on his National guitar and ukulele. It's fun, campy, and--yeah--hot. --Jason Verlinde

Product Description:
The Asylum Street Spankers, a loose, unplugged collective of Austin, TX, pickers and bon vivants, seem to have little trouble, on Hot Lunch's 16 cuts, deftly blending virtuosic musicianship with seemingly effortless musical and lyrical wit. The band flits between ragtime, country, old-style am radio pop tunes, swing, and country-blues with equal ease. The Spankers — particularly on such puckish, narrative cuts as "Trippin' Over You," "Sad Bomber," and others — manage to walk the razor thin line between novelty and just plain fun-lovin' jamboree frolics.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars A great CD to introduct the Spankers to others or yourself.......2005-01-18

The Asylum Street Street Spankers are as much a lifestyle philosophy as a band. As such it's impossible to capture the essence of them in a recording. Even strictly musically they cover such a range of style and subject matter that striking the right mix can't be easy. I'd reccomend getting everything they've done. But if you just want to try them out or if you want to turn someone else on to the band, the best way is with a fresh helping of "Hot Lunch". The Album offers a great balance of humor, homage, irreverence, and superb musicianship. If you can see them live, do so. If you can't I reccomend "Hot Lunch".

5 out of 5 stars Emphasizes the music, not the comedy.......2003-02-23

I've seen the Spankers dozens of times in person, and there is nothing like it. But I didn't think their albums translated well to the world outside of Austin...Until Hot Lunch. This album has the right approach; it captures the band's raw musical talent and leaves out the had-to-be-there fun that totally works live but can end up sounding campy on vinyl/other. This album brings out the true greatness that makes the Spankers so amazing: Stan's smooth, woody clarinet, Pop's poignant ukulele, and Christina's lush vocals.

5 out of 5 stars So good it Hurts!.......2002-08-03

This was the first of their albums I bought, and, with the exception of LIVE, it is their best. This is some of the freshest music out there today. I give it as gifts. You cannot be depressed when listening to this lively all real instrument band of people who all just love to play.

3 out of 5 stars It's good but not their best.......2001-01-07

If you are a die hard fan or have a collection of their stuff, then this is a good CD to have. There are some redeemable qualities on this one, but it's just not their best. It's not really up to their standards. If you have not heard very much from them or are experimenting with their style of music. Please start with one of their other Cd's first, then move on to this one.

4 out of 5 stars swingy, jazzy, jumpy.......2000-06-17

I'm a fan of Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, and this is an interesting cross between their style and the Squirell Nut Zippers. An eclectic mix of serious musicians playing not-so-serious music. The 30s-40s era harmonies are a blast.

Swing on!

5 out of 5 stars The Club de Wash is dead. Long live the Club de Wash........2004-01-09

I Hate to Wake Up Sober in Nebraska is the classic song from this album ("not a tree to mar the landscape . . . miles and miles of empty range . . . I've got Jack Daniels on the dashboard in case my Jesus lets me down). Home of the Whales is lovely, and suitable for playing to babies or to kids, before, during, and after showing them picture books about whales. I would also recommend seeking the studio album "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions." Apparently it is self-produced, as the insert for "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions" does not list any distributer, etc. You can easily hunt for a new copy of it on Google. "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions" features Jeff Berg, John Corning, and Jeff Laramie (collectively known as Free Hot Lunch), plus a host of other accompanying musicians, and contains I Hate To Wake Up Sober In Nebraska, but also Middle of a Love Song, Mambo Man, and the lovely Phenomenon of Love. Mambo Man is probably the only pop song where the subject matter is an accountant ("data all day, data all day, data all day . . . all day . . . all day. But at night I keep having these dreams!"). Recall that Jim Post also sings a beautiful version of Phenomenon of Love on his excellent album, The Crooner From Outer Space (which also contains, e.g., Lonely Heart Don't Abandon Me, Magnolia I'm Coming Home, and Monty Python's The Galaxy). A real surprising treasure on "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions" is the song, "Oreos." Oreos (about Oreo cookies) is one of the most amazing pop songs ever composed or recorded. Its style appears to be a combination of madrigal and doo-wop. To conclude, I might give 3 stars to Free Hot Lunch's "Eat This," and 5 stars to "Free Hot Lunch! Studio Sessions." Put on either of these two albums, close the eyes, and you'll be in the company of old friends at a tiny table in the Club de Wash, once again.

    4 out of 5 stars Wa-Hah!.......2002-07-28

From the socially conscious "HOME OF THE WHALES" to the socially unacceptable "I Hate to Wake Up Sober in Nebraska," this album (what an archaic term) presents the thoughts and feelings of 3 young men from Madison, Wisconsin played in an outrageously good acoustic jazz style. Free Hot Lunch was a favorite in Madison, Wisconsin for years in the 80's and early 90's. The bands clever though twisted humor, set to hot mandolin, guitar, and fiddle acoustic jazz, and played to full houses of tequila soaked patrons, was a universal hit.
The vocal harmonys are lovely, the instrument work is impressive, the lyrics are a riot, and the Jose Cuervo is RIGHT OVER THERE, SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?
Buy this CD, get in your car, set the volume on 'thunderous', and boogie down the road.
