5 out of 5 stars This Album is Too Short!.......2007-03-03

Here is a great debut album by one of the top 5 Women of Country Music; my only complaint is that it's too short! This album introduced a "traditional" female voice to country music in a time when most of the Country Music ladies were imitating the squalling of Crystal Gayle or the overhyped Roseanne Cash. Patty seemed to covertly add the heart and soul of Kentucky with modern (yet genuine) country music....and surprise, surprise, it was a hit. And, while Patty did occasionally veer off the "traditional" path now and again, she always came back to her roots. This CD contains 10 fine songs, including the popular "Timber, I'm Falling in Love", and "Dont Toss us Away". However, her finest are "I Wont Gamble with Your Love" and "I'll Never Grow Tired of You". Highly recommended. A+

5 out of 5 stars The album that really got her career going.......2004-02-18

I became a fan of Patty's from her very first album, but it was this (third) album that established her as a serious contender in country music. The album is filled with excellent songs, demonstrating Patty's ability to sing ballads and up-tempo songs equally effectively. Already revered in the music business on the strength of her first two albums, Patty was able to secure the services of Vince Gill, Rodney Crowell and bluegrass singer Claire Lynch as backing vocalists on this album, with Vince appearing on five tracks. The overall style is typical of the late eighties - more country sounding that Patty's recordings of the mid-nineties but more pop sounding than Mountain soul.

The album yielded several country hits including Chains, Don't toss us away and Timber I'm fall falling in love. Blue side of town opens the album in great style. Although the title may suggest a sad ballad, it is in fact an up-tempo song about solving problems by have a few drinks. Next comes another upbeat song, I won't gamble with your love, followed by a couple of excellent ballads, Go on and If you think. The remainder of the album is made up of the big hits plus several more wonderful songs.

If you enjoy country music of the late eighties, you should enjoy this album.

5 out of 5 stars What a voice!.......2004-01-06

Patty Loveless have a sensual voice like no other. And when she sings with Vince Gill on "Timber, I'm Falling in Love", it is sensational!

4 out of 5 stars This Honky Tonk Angel doesn't forget her country roots.......2003-06-01

At times throughout the years, I have had brief flirtations with modern-day country music, and on these infrequent occasions I have been drawn to those singers who have a discernible trace of old-school country in them. Patty Loveless is one such artist, a female vocalist with the twang and the bluegrass type of sound my nascent country tastes require. Sure, you've got your electric guitar and drums here too, but the good old fiddle and mandolin make their presence known quite strongly in a number of tracks. I have another connection of sorts with Patty Loveless; while I have never met her, she was at one time a waitress in my home town. I think I discovered her when she performed Timber I'm Falling in Love on Hee Haw, and that song is one of those catchy, upbeat songs that stay in your head for quite awhile. Chains was another hit song of the same ilk, and I Won't Gamble With Your Love makes a strong play for best song on the album. Of course, any country singer has to do a few moaning songs about the sadder things in life, and Loveless proves herself more than capable of singing slow, melancholy ballads full of real feeling. Blue Side of Town and The Lonely Side of Love are nice tracks, but If You Think, Don't Toss Us Away, and I'm On Your Side really distinguish themselves as maudlin ballads of great merit. Many country fans might be interested in knowing that Vince Gill, before he was a superstar, lent strong backup vocals to five of the songs on this album. I haven't followed country music or Patty Loveless at all in the years since this album was released in 1988, but Honky Tonk Angel certainly stands as one of the more impressive female country albums released during the late 1980s.

4 out of 5 stars Hit-Packed Effort.......2002-03-20

Probably the most complete country music package of her day, combining shy, Kentucky innocence with a stinging tenor, Patty Loveless' third MCA effort finally wrangled the immense commercial success predicted for her, and the hits here, Kostas' Buddy Holly-flavored "Timber, I'm Falling In Love," "Don't Toss Us Away," and "Chains" established her as a bona fide country music star. There are also several gems which weren't released as singles: "Blue Side of Town" (performed on the David Letterman show,) and Kevin Welch's masterful "I Won't Gamble With Your Love." Loveless sticks to her guns and delivered 2 Top Ten hits, her first #1, and a garnered a boatload of fans eager to hear more.

4 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag.......2000-10-28

Although the two albums on this CD are both Columbia albums from the same period, they are vastly different. If I Give My Heart to You represents the more traditional standards in a vocal appraoch similar to Kitty Kallen's big hits like Little Things Mean a Lot and In the Chapel in the Moonlight from the mid-50's. All 12 selections on this album are in that familiar style and are quite good. The second album, Honky Tonk Angel, is Kitty's attempt to cover Country and Western songs and it is not nearly as successful. There are a few good numbers here, most notably the slow ballads, but the uptempo selections are not her best efforts. However, the If I Give My Heart to You album is so good that it outweighs the less successful Honky Tonk Angel album. Anyone who is a Kitty Kallen fan, like me, will welcome this CD, particularly as there isn't that much Kitty Kallen music out there.

5 out of 5 stars nothing like the old stuff.......2004-07-03

I remember hearing little blossom years ago, when Dolly sang these songs made popular by Faye Tucker on a 33! Yes, the songs tear at your heart, but they make you remember them. These will always have a special spot in my collection. Would love Dolly singing them today!

1 out of 5 stars Scary!.......2004-01-03

Yikes. I love Dolly and I think she is a brilliant musician and a singer. But this...These are Dolly's earliest recordings and she is obviously quite young. You can hear she has some trouble controlling her voice. Her sound really matures later. The material is what makes this record not so great. Most of the songs (like Little Blossom, Two Orphans, Letter to Heaven) are about angelic little children who die angelic little deaths. Makes you want to throw yourself out the nearest window. While it is interesting to hear Dolly's earlist stuff, it is not worth it!

The cover photo for this debut CD makes Brad Martin look like a male model (or a younger Rob Lowe). Though Martin has found his look, he has yet to forge an artistic identity, as the music varies widely in both style and quality. It's encouraging that he had a hand in writing eight of the 10 cuts, but the two that he didn't--"Before I Knew Better" and "The Fifth"--bring out the best in him. The former, which kicks off the album and is the first single, recalls the bittersweet luminosity of prime Rodney Crowell, while the latter carries conviction within its whiskey lament. As for the rest, it's hard for the same singer to reconcile mawkishly generic ballads such as "Completely" and "That's a Woman" with the lightweight novelty leer (and echoes of Jerry Lee Lewis's "Breathless") on "Rub Me the Right Way" and the Johnny Paycheck orneriness of "Damn the Whiskey." There's promise here, but it's buried beneath the sort of slick production and formulaic, derivative material that reduce a talented developing artist to mere product. --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars ...Sooth my troubles away!.......2002-08-15

I bought this cd about a month ago, and it was a great move on my part. The reason I bought this was Brad Martin's first single, "Before I knew better", is such a awesome song, that I can relate to so much. The song seems so real, and is destined to be a #1 song! Of this year 2002, Steve Azar was the only new artist to hit a cord in me, but Brad Martin fits that also. All the songs have their own uniqueness. The song, "Completely", I just can't get enough of this. If, "Completely", does make it to radio people will fall in love with him all over again, even though they already are now! The song, "Rub me the right way", when I get home from work, and the job's gotten the best of me, this song helps cool me down, and do it again the next day. The song, "On the wings of a honky-tonk Angel", is one of the best traditional songs I've heard in years. "Run to Me", seems to appeal to lots of people, and its very catchy. The song, "The Fifth", is one of my favorites on this album, it's about the bottle getting the best of you. Again, this song is so real. Thats what Brad Martin can do, put a song in front of you, and make it so real and unbelievable! The song,"Just like Love", is a cute song thats real catchy, and the other songs are awesome too.
Like somebody said, Don't ever judge a album by it's cover. This guy is so much better, so traditional, but modern at the same time. The only bad thing I could say, is myself being selfish for wanting more songs. But for a debut album, this is exceptionally impressive. Who knows, he could have a shot at the ACM's best new male vocalist next year as well. Another good thing is he can write too, he wrote 8 of the 10 tracks. This is the perfect album for the working man who likes some good country music, to sooth his troubles away. I really do think that this guy will explode in a few months, and become a huge star like Brad Paisley is. I haven't heard a bad word about this album. You know why that is? This album is top notch all the way throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Brad Martin. Wings of a Honky Tonk Angel.......2002-07-19

I recently bought Brad Martin's debut CD Wings of a Honky Tonk Angel, I would recommend it to everyone! There are several traditional country songs, as well as more modern country songs! It's a wonderful CD!

5 out of 5 stars If you haven't bought it, do so NOW!.......2002-07-17

I bought Brad Martin's debut cd the day it came out and it stayed in my cd player for a week straight. This album is great for fans of the "traditional" country sound, as well as the newer "pop" country sound as many like to label it, though I feel no need to label music as long as it's good. Brad's traditional roots come out most clearly in cuts like "Damn the Whiskey," "The Fifth," and "Rub Me the Right Way." Then there are tracks like "Before I Knew Better" and "Completely" that show Brad's youthful, more modern side. I can't say enough good things about this album. There's not a single song on it that I feel the need to skip when listening to it, and the fact that Brad co-wrote on 8 of the 10 tracks only makes it better to me. He lets you into his head through his music. If you haven't bought this cd you definitely need to. Plus, I met Brad at this year's Fan Fair and so I can tell you first hand that you'll be supporting one of the nicest artists in Nashville if you buy the cd!

4 out of 5 stars Snappy Offerings from THE Pioneer of Female Country Music.......2000-07-25

It is ironic (and I am thinking of the Bear Family releases from Germany here, as well as this KW compilation from the UK) that it is the Europeans who have rediscovered the music of America's classic country artists (Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton, Rose Maddox, etc.) re-mastered them on CD, re-packaged them, and brought them back home to be enjoyed. This complements a "discovery" of American jazz artists by the Japanese during the 1980s. Having said that, I must say I adore the music of Kitty Wells. Her high-alto vocal style, her simple yet compelling harmonies and haunting instrumental accompaniments take us back to the pre-Vietnam South of the 50s and 60s, to the underworld of honky-tonk men and their women, in songs about --what else?--unfaithfulness and broken marriage, loneliness(Whose Shoulder Will I Cry On); depression; regret(Oh So Many Years); alcoholism(Death at the Bar); female liberation (It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels); and Baptist-style Christianity (One By One). (Her pro-US involvement song "Hello Vietnam"recorded with hubby Johnny Wright, is still a catchy tune, if not by now infamous). Some dark stuff, but tempered with jumpy "pick-me-up" tunes like "As Long As I Live" that really get the feet to tapping. (Her duets with Red Foley are all--without exception-- priceless gems) Kitty was the first true female country star, and the first to sing country songs from a female perspective. Her signature song, "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky-Tonk Angels" actually shook up country listeners in 1952 with its criticism of male philandering. Her career still enjoys longevity in the Southern states today, though her inability (or, more probably, refusal) to alter her personal style to the times led to a falling off of her career in the 60s--but this only adds integrity to her music. It is all 100% KITTY, warts and all, as we always feel she is herself present in the songs, even when they occasionally fall into predictability, the "formulaic." (Notably, her rather twangy Southern accent apparently "bothered" many mainstream record companies and radio stations, and this kept her from reaching "superstar" status like her famous successors Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn.) Still, this is vintage radio-days country sound, folks, with more than a dash of gospel, excellent digital sound quality and downright captivating musical settings. The music goes straight to this fan's heart--even without a few shots of Old Kentucky Bourbon! The Bear Family 4-CD set "Kitty Wells:The Queen of Country Music" may be too exhaustive (and expensive) for Kitty novices. For those who need a little Kitty in their life, this offering from the UK is recommended as a good, standard primer of her music.

        Product Description

Modern Cowboy and Country music. Steeped in the length and breadth of the great tradition, but with a unique contemporary sensibility. The focus is on the songs. The content ranges from humorous, almost novelty, to tragedy, with a lot of romance thrown in for good measure. Urban writes in many styles and the range of music on the CD reflects that. Featured throughout are steel guitar and fiddle, the classic texture of so much of the greatest music of the classic eras of C&W music. This is complemented by sweet harmony vocals.
