Here Come the Derailers

Editorial Reviews

Vocalist Tony Villanueva and guitarist Brian Hofeldt hail from Oregon, made their musical mark playing the Bakersfield sound in Austin, and with Here Come the Derailers set their sights on Nashville. Music City ace Kyle Lehning replaces roots-rock vet Dave Alvin in the producer's chair, yielding a sound with a little less spit and a little more polish than previous Derailers records. Fully half the disc's dozen tracks are drawn from other pens, including country hit-maker Kostas's "More of Your Love" and three Jim Lauderdale cuts that don't quite meet his usual standard of excellence. The Derailers fare better when speaking for themselves--"Bar Exam" and "There Goes the Bride" are fun novelty numbers, and Hofeldt's "I See My Baby" is a satisfying excursion into classic pop--and even when they shut their mouths entirely, as on the instrumental "Country A Go-Go," a dandy guitar duel. --Anders Smith Lindall

1 out of 5 stars Not The Derailers I Knew and Loved.......2007-04-27

An absolute travesty. By the time this record came out, the band seemed more interested in pushing "The Derailers" as a brand rather than the remarkable band they once were. Nashville production pushes the guitar to the bottom of the mix and hired guns write most of the material. It sounds to me like the band was trying to "make it" as some kind of Mavericks-type group, but in the process they destroyed what made them special.

Stick with "Jackpot" or "Reverb Deluxe."

I was introduced to the Derailers about a year and a half ago by a friend who lives in Dallas. This was my first Derailers CD and so far it's still my favorite. Yes, the sound is a little more Nashville-esque than previous albums, but that's about my only complaint. Tony Villaneuva and Brian Hofeldt have styles that are sometimes complimentary and sometimes contrasting, but on this album they really strike an excellent balance. Some reviewers complain that the sound is a little too smooth and polished and somehow devoid of real feeling. I'm not sure what those folks have been listening to, but I get a lot of emotion and passion coming out of these songs. Just because the band is tighter than varnish on a board it doesn't mean these guys aren't putting their hearts and souls into the music.

One test of a great album is, over time, how many of the songs you could consider your "favorite." There are several on this one that have been my favorite at one time or another over the past year or so. I never get tired of listening to this album and I'd sure recommend it to anyone who likes good music of almost any genre.

5 out of 5 stars One of their best.......2006-08-19

Along with "Full Western Dress," this is one of the two best Derailers CDs. This is 100% honky tonk (I won't say "country" since that implies Kenny, Keith, Tim and all the other pretenders). If you like real honky tonk, this is it. "Bar Exam" is a great drinking song, and "All the Rage in Paris" and "I'd Follow You Anywhere" are amazing. "My Angel's Getting Tired" is a heartbreaking weeper; the protaganist knows that his drinking is ruining his life, but he can't stop hitting the bottle--one of the greatest sad songs ever.

1 out of 5 stars go with what ya know is right.......2003-12-24

That seems to be what the derailers have forgotten on this album or maybe they are just being led by nashville establishment to a path more pop.

I love the derailers really i do. Got turned onto them in Richmond VA and saw them in San Francisco. One of my favorite groups. this album unfortunately was a true let down I listened to it twice through and could not listen to it again.

Talented they are. Great voices, great licks. Just do what you know is right....real country.

5 out of 5 stars Country Retro.......2003-12-02

If you believe country music started with Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney, move on to something else now.

If, on the other hand, you understand the sounds, moods and roots of country and western music, this is the group you've been waiting for since Garth, et al, 'pop'-ularized the country charts. The inheritors of the legacy of Hank, George Jones and a host of others have arrived; they are The Derailers.
