Under its enigmatic title lurks a remarkably entertaining little show. The Drowsy Chaperone is a droll Canadian import that's part homage to the musical theater, part spoof. Narrated by the unnamed Man in Chair (Bob Martin), the show basically reenacts a 1920s musical named "The Drowsy Chaperone." This allows the creative team to match an inspired collection of familiar 1920s types---the flapper (Sutton Foster), the cad (Troy Britton Johnson), the zinger-slinging diva (Beth Leavel), the Latin lothario (Danny Burstein), the zany character actors (Georgia Engel, Edward Hibbert)---with witty, well-crafted pastiches of songs of that era. Penned by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison, the tunes are instantly hummable, while the ensemble cast is uniformly superb---you know the standard is high when the awesome Sutton Foster doesn't even stand out that much. Thankfully, the "meta" concept doesn't lead to arch-irony and detachment. A genuine affection for what makes musicals so fun shines throughout, making this a real keeper of an album. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Hysterical! Genius! A Treasure!.......2007-06-27
I live in the midst of the theatre district in NYC and see tons of Broadway shows on a regular basis. I can honestly say I can't remember laughing harder than the first time I saw "Drowsy..." When Sutton Foster did her "Show Off" number I fell out of my seat, overheating with hysterical laughter. I've seen the show 3 times so far -- which is a first for me. The CD is great, too. Buy it and sing along! If you like over-the-top, unique, clever musical comedy, this is the show for you, baby!
Hysterically hilariously funny.......2007-06-20
I saw this show with the original cast and found myself in the aisle . . . literally. I had an aisle seat orchestra Row G. Wow! This has got to be the funniest show I have ever seen. Bob Martin, Sutton Foster, Beth Leavel, and Danny Burnstein could not have done it any better. Energy was high, score was magnificant, and dialogue had me rolling. This is a fantastic show for teens to seniors to sit back, relax, and have a terrific time. Amazing!
awesome!.......2007-06-17
i saw this show on broadway, and if you know anything about it you know that it is a 1920s musical that "the man in the chair" is adding his little comments all throught it. the cd includes most of them. it is fantastic, although i don't reccommend seeing the actual show on broadway, the cd is great and the songs are fun and catchy!
Fantastic!.......2007-06-10
Just saw the play in NYC and the soundtrack captures all the fun. If you've not seen the show yet, go now! You'll love it.
Snoozefest!.......2007-05-17
I must say the score doesn't live up to it's praise, completely boring! This almost put me to sleep! I had the misfortune of borrowing this CD from a friend and (with an open mind) can say the music from a supposedly good MUSICal is just plain boring...aborrida...need I say it in any other language for you? Now, I'm not denying the show isn't good, but how can a musical be good when the MUSIC in it is monotonous and unimpressive? Riddle me that! I can say one good thing: they got "drowsy" right in the title!

Ruthie Foster's the newest voice in old-school soul. Her fifth album is a remarkable flashback to the genre's '60s and '70s heyday, framing her warm butter-and-cayenne-pepper singing with organ, electric piano, shimmering guitar textures, and strong backbeats. That sound, along with her strength as a song interpreter--rippling with beauty on Lucinda Williams's "Fruits of My Labor," stunningly emotional on Son House's cautionary Delta spiritual "People Grinnin' in Your Face"--and her fine-tuned social politics, makes Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, and Nina Simone reasonable artistic references. For the 42-year-old Texan, this historic approach is new. Until now she's been an obscure acoustic-guitar-wielding singer-songwriter. And, indeed, the evocative lyricism of her own tunes "Harder Than the Fall," "Heal Yourself," and "Beaver Creek Blues" is clearly the work of an experienced craftsperson. But the performances on this elegant album, made under the tutelage of imaginative and empathetic Austin-based producer Malcolm Welbourne, live up to its boastful title, and seem destined to bring Foster the larger audience she deserves. --Ted Drozdowski
Customer Reviews:
Love It!.......2007-06-26
When I first listened to this cd my favorite songs were roots rockin' "People Grinnin' in Your Face" and "Up in My Room". Over a weekend I fell in love with the entire cd. The lyrics of so many of the songs are thought-provoking, humorous and heart warming. "A Friend Like You" and "Phenomenal Woman" have become theme songs for me and my women friends. Ruthie, honey, just keep being phenomenal!!!
Very real.......2007-06-08
There's nothing pretentious about this CD. I would like to be in the room with these musicians while they're doing the music to experience it first hand.
Phenomenal!.......2007-06-06
I heard Ruthie Foster in an interview on NPR (National Public Radio), on "Studio 360". NPR has done this to me before; hooked me on a sound I'd never experienced previous. I have this CD in my cubicle at work and it is all I can do not to dance or sing out loud. I am going to have to get a copy for the car and one for the house I think. This was my first Foster experience and it is as profound as Bob Marley singing "No Woman, No Cry". And Maya Angelou's poem "Phenomenal Woman" set to song by Foster is...I don't have the words.
The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster.......2007-05-30
Disappointing. Only cared for about 2 songs, which were the "preview" songs that prompted me to purchase the cd.
Ruthie Foster.......2007-05-29
I have enjoyed most of the cuts on this cd, especially Phenomenal Woman. I would like to hear more material, however. I will listen to the other two cd's that you have listed. I like her voice and her phrasing is very good. It just didn't give me goose bumps. That's my usual measure.

Josh Groban in Concert has all the ingredients to be a long-running PBS staple: a young (21), good-looking performer with a golden voice; songs in Italian and Spanish for the crossover crowd (i.e., Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman) and pop and movie songs for the mainstream; guest stars galore (David Foster, John Williams, Angie Stone, Andrea Corr, Lili Haydn); a large orchestra; and striking but not obtrusive visual effects. The centerpiece of this DVD-CD combo (also available in a DVD keepcase) is the 80-minute concert DVD, filmed in Pasadena in October 2002 and featuring numerous songs from Groban's debut CD, including "You're Still You," which catapulted him into stardom when he sang it on TV's Ally McBeal. There are also two new songs--the ballad "Broken Vow," with Groban accompanied by Foster, and "For Always," with the orchestra conducted by John Williams, who wrote the song for the Steven Spielberg film A.I..
The 37-minute CD offers seven songs performed in the concert (including the two not on the previous CD, "Broken Vow" and "For Always"), plus "O Holy Night." The DVD has excellent picture and sound (PCM stereo, Dolby Digital 5.1, and DTS), interviews, and backstage footage, and the combination with the CD is an excellent value. Groban's fans, of course, will consider it a treasure at any price. --David Horiuchi

In case you couldn't go to the concert. . ........2007-05-12
In case you couldn't go to the concert . . . buy this CD/DVD set. This is a good overall product. The DVD is seamlessly pieced together from three concerts. The concerts were awesome due to the lights, musicians, song introductions, and of course - Josh's voice, presence, and energy.
Young Josh .......2007-04-12
This cd and dvd collection is valuable to anyone collecting Josh Groban music. The dvd is nicely done and gives a little insight into his family (parents and younger brother) with the special features. Nice, clean, family entertainment which is such a rarity nowadays. This young man's voice is exceptional - God has truly blessed him with such a voice, and to see him perform is a gift as well. My family truly enjoyed this bonus.
The Best I've Ever Heard Live!!.......2007-04-10
He has the most beautiful voice!! I love seeing him live! Worth the money to hear him over and over again!!!
Josh Grobin DVD/CD.......2007-04-02
I ordered this concert DVD/CD for my Mom who is a new fan of Josh Grobin's and she loved both the concert footage and the songs on the DVD.
Fantastic concert....Josh Grobin is outstanding!.......2007-02-22
I have been a Josh Grobin fan since I heard "You Lift Me Up", and I have not been dissapointed with his CD's ever since. I was excited when I got this DVD and it definitely did not dissapoint. He chooses his songs wisely and each song in this concert is full of emotion and depth. The CD compliments the DVD well and is always a favorite. From "Broken Vow" to "Oh Holy Night" each song is sung by this master singer.
Highly Recommended!

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15
I absolutely love the musical so I'm thrilled with the cd.
My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.
MODERNIZE your music collection!!!.......2007-07-13
This is an AMAZING musical and great album. It is sure to jazz-up any music collection! BUY THIS ALBUM NOW!
A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!

Andrea Bocelli's Sogno ("Dream") is a pop album of entirely original compositions that evoke traditional and modern influences. Bocelli himself describes the CD as secular Italian traditional melodic music with a contemporary twist. The album's 14 tracks include "The Prayer," a Bocelli and Celine Dion duet produced by David Foster; "Come un Fiume Tu," an intriguing collaboration with soundtrack maestro Ennio Morricone; "O Mare e Tu," a duet with Dulce Pontes; and "Sogno" (the first single excerpted from the album), a light-as-a-feather, emotional composition sung by Bocelli with his typical vocal emphasis, which has made him famous around the world since the release of his self-titled debut. --Ernesto De Pascale

This is the most beautiful music you will ever listen to.Andrea has a way of bringing out your innermost soul. The music can make you cry just to listen to it,even if you don't understand the words(which are translated in the booklet).Highlights are Sogno and Immenso for beauty,The Prayer and Nel Cuore Lei for stellar duets, and Canto Della Terra for the rapturous glory of Andrea's voice. If you buy nothing else from Andrea, buy this.
A Great Collection Of Songs!.......2007-03-28

Not content with the simplistic "crossover" formula, superstar tenor Andrea Bocelli has been pursuing alternative paths since he emerged as a vocal phenomenon in the mid-1990s: operatic classics and contemporary popular song. The singer's last few albums have showcased his love for the former (including homages to his beloved Verdi: the Requiem and Verdi aria collection). But Cieli di Toscana ("Tuscan Skies") marks a triumphant return to the pop idiom last explored on Sogno, offering a highly varied series of the kind of beautifully crafted contemporary melodies that initially won Bocelli acclaim.
The familiar cast of songwriter-collaborators (including Francesco Sartori, responsible for the smash success "Time to Say Goodbye") mixes with new blood; Bocelli himself unveils his songwriting talents on "Il Diavolo e l'Angelo." It's a highly produced affair, but behind all the gloss, Bocelli sings with a newfound, relaxed, even mellow quality. There are intimately touching moments--"L'Incontro," a tribute to his first son featuring Bocelli's own poetry as read by U2's Bono--as well as soaring flights of lyricism (the duet "L'Abitudine" with Italian singer Helena). And on "Mascagni," with its quotes from that composer's operas, Bocelli makes another nod to his classical affinities. But whatever the style, Bocelli is a singer who knows how to go straight to his listeners' hearts. --Sarah Chin
Album Description
Exclusive UK version of Bocelli's third pop release includes the exclusive bonus track 'Tornera La Neve' and CD-ROM. The album also features 'L'Incontro' a duet with Gerard Depardieu. David Foster co-composes some of the tracks on this album as well. 2001.

See Other Andrea Bocelli Review.......2007-07-06
Just what it says. See my other Andrea Bocelli reviews to get the idea I really like this guy.
Emotional therapy!.......2007-05-14
"He is all heart; there's no pretense. You can feel it." No kidding. These were my mom's last comments about Bocelli two months before she left earthly existence.
This album helped me process a lot of emotional residue affiliated with the strain of difficult dynamics between my mom and myself.
Don't get me wrong. The music isn't sad; it's pure heart and emotion, so it may evoke emotions. The last cut, "L'Ultimo Re" is gorgeous with the way his voice soars!

Great music!.......2006-12-18
I bought the album before listening to any of the songs, because i'm a Bocelli fan. I was not disappointed. Wonderful melodies, beautiful voice. My personal favourites are Melodramma, Chiara and Resta Qui, but this is a great cd overall.
Cieli di Toscana.......2006-08-25
There is no other voice quite like Andrea's voice. I keep listening to this CD over and over as some of the songs just touch my heart, both with his voice and the written arrangements. One of my very favorites from Andrea. He has the same qualities to his voice with popular songs as he does with opera. When following the English translations in the CD case, the message of each song becomes very clear through the inflections and tonal quality of his voice.
LOVE IT!!!!.......2006-08-25
What more can I say once agian a total great cd, that will sure to become my favorite and my kids love it too!!! Ages 5, 8, and 15. WOW>>>>> Pleases all ages,LOVE IT LOVE LOVE IT

"How about a bad title?" wonders Spencer Kayden's Little Sally in "Too Much Exposition." "That could kill a show pretty good." It's a tribute to the skill deployed by the Urinetown creative team (Mark Hollman, music and lyrics; Greg Kotis, book and lyrics) that its title doesn't kill the show. Set in a near-future in which water depletion has led to a ban on private toilets, this may be the only musical in history in which one of the leads makes a fortune on pee. But the show (which originated Off-Broadway before graduating to the big league) limits its subversive intent to subject matter and is refreshingly classic in approach and structure--think Weill-meets-Lewis Carroll. Backed by a small ensemble, the cast (with John Cullum in a turn nothing short of brilliant as the evil urinal magnate) has a field day with Kotis and Hollman's frequently hilarious score. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

An Amazing Find.......2007-04-03
I just recently discovered this gem of a musical. It's a stand out show with a unique touch. If heard a few outside musicals (The Rocky Horror Show, Hedwig and the Angry Inch...) but this one stands out from them. The music is amazing, the lyrics are creative, and the humor is ripe.
With a chamber music-esque overture, the tone is set. 'Too Much Exposition' is a great introduction to Urinetown (the musical). Officer Lockstock addresses the audience about what they should expect from the show. Little Sally wants to let the audience in on the water shortage but Lockstock stops her. ("You're too young to understand it now, but nothing can kill a show like too much exposition." "How 'bout bad subject matter? Or a bad title, even? That could kill a show pretty good.")
I've read what others have written: you don't get the whole humor of the show unless you've seen it. I haven't seen it, but this recording is enough to get me see it. (That is, if a production nearby, even a high school production, is put on.)
The songs that I find myself listening to over and over are:
Too Much Exposition (not really a song, but still...)
Urinetown
It's A Privilage to Pee
Mr. Cladwell (a wonderfully sweet villain song)
Cop Song (a wonderfully fun villain song)
Follow Your Heart
Don't Be the Bunny
Act 1 Finale
What Is Urinetown?
Run, Freedome, Run!
Why Did I Listen to That Man?
We're Not Sorry (a great 20's sound, reminds me of 'Chicago')
I See A River (I really love this song... the feeling gotten across, before Lockstock comes out to comment, is 'Oh, everything is going to be okay', but Lockstock informs us that all is NOT well)
With a cry of "Hail Mathus!" the show ends. I just have to listen again, after making a trip to the bathroom.
Urinetown the Musical.......2007-03-10
This CD has all the songs from the show. The show is great and this rendition is about the best.
Not for Everyone.......2006-12-28
This musical is a great piece for the 21st century no doubt, that being said it takes some getting used to. The musical cannot be taken at face value, there are lots of things happening under the surface and it takes some bites at things musical theater doesn't usually take, like itself. On the surface it is strange, and not really something people would listen to over and over. However, once you figure it out, it's fun to listen to it again to find all the things that are really going on. It is very funny, and says some good things about the current state of the world. For musical theater fans this is questionable, if you just like the toe-tapping happy go lucky feel, this isn't it. But if you like the social commentary that goes along with that toe tapping, this is a must. NOT FOR FIRST TIME BROADWAY LISTNERS. Favorite Song: "Look at the Sky"
"DON'T BE THE BUNNY!".......2006-12-04
My son, a high school senior, told me his first show of this year's theatrical season was going to be "Urinetown". My response was something like ... No, really, what shows are you doing this year? Then he brought home a recording of it, and I was hooked right away by the lyrics. Over the years my son has been involved in many performances, but he and the rest of the cast had a real blast preparing for, and performing, this show! He wanted Lockstock, but was cast as Cladwell ... Owned it ... Loved it!
I am no Broadway expert by any stretch of the definition, but this show is wonderfully entertaining! You will see (and hear) snippets from other shows, you will pick up on some of even the more subtle stabs at musicals as a whole, you will groan, you will laugh and you will enjoy ... But only if you try not to take it too seriously.
Get past the title (in this case I certainly think it did not "...kill a show pretty good"), relax, and be entertained. And for goodness sake, if you have a chance to see it performed live, do so! A musical that pokes fun at itself? Yes, a refreshing departure from the norm, and worth the price of admission.
Now my favorite CD, EVER!.......2006-10-03
After reading Urinetown (never having seen it), I wondered what on earth it sounded like. Most of the book is just lyrics, and I had no idea what they sounded like. When I finally listened to the music, I found an incredibly complex, catchy, and moving CD.
The music isn't so much complex as it is creative and works with the lyrics. Keep in mind this is a comedy, but this comedy does have soaring melodies and very great simulataneous singing moments (I can't remember what that is specifically called, but think of "Tonight Reprise" from West Side Story). These songs not only entertained me, it moved the story along.
My favorite song is "Why Did I Listen to that Man?" as it is the song where everything comes together and reaches the climax (both in story-line and musically). However, I have a soft spot for every Cladwell song (and I haven't found a person yet who doesn't love "Don't Be the Bunny) as well as every song. What's best about this musical is the range of genres (but not so much as one would find in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat).
The cast is truly talented and can perform these songs. It's a very strong recording for what I feel (after finally getting to see it) is the best contemporary musical to date. Not only will your sides split, but you'll learn something too. Best of all, it's a musical for everyone. Unlike other equally hilarious comedies (*cough*The Producers*cough*), Urinetown never relies on "unappropriate" and "adult" material to deliver laughs, although you will have to get over the "really awful title."

Not much element.......2007-03-04
Although the title theme made me purchase this album, it isn't one that I'll plan on playing through anytime soon. There are a couple of songs that I can listen to, but as a whole, the album is mediocre at best. Unless you're a fan of the typical, superficial sounds of the '80's pop music, this album probably won't fit your fancy too much. The instrumental version of the title's love theme was quite popular for a while, but the lyrical version is almost unknown to many. Unless you're into collecting soundtracks for some reason, this one isn't one that I'd recommend.

Why did I give this soundtrack 5 stars? Because I am nostalgic for the 1980s, that and Queen and LIVE AID, brings it all back to when life seemed simple but the world around was heading toward the future at a rapid pace. This music inspired me to try to come up with my own "Wonder Years" of sorts but based in the 1980s
in a small middle school in Maine with lots of references to the music and events of the time. I call it "My Fifth Street Years," I hope to write the Pilot Episode in a few years time... Until then, if you miss the 1980s like I do, check out TV LAND and LIVE AID and this and other 1980s CDs.... After all, the CD came out in 1981, the ancestor of the Blu-Ray disc of today....

A little "Love Theme" goes a loooooong way........2006-12-03
I hated this movie. I've watched it way too many times to make that claim, I'm sure- it's one of those "hate it so much you always watch it" kinda movies. But I think it has a lot to do with nostalgia- where I was when this movie and it's music came out. You can almost feel the time and place you were back then. And that's the only reason I give this soundtrack any recognition. A couple seconds from "Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire (For Just A Moment)," and I'm haunted, in good and bad ways. Without harping too much on the flick, the specific faces and images from it alone are enough to evoke sentimentality for yesteryear. But this soundtrack is the kicker. I never really liked anything from it except "Love Theme From St. Elmo's Fire (For Just A Moment)." But after years, even "Man in Motion" evokes emotions. We all have times in our lives past that are sparked from the merest squeak of connections- a quote, a picture, a note of music. I have to admit even "Man in Motion" does that to me years later. The filler between it and the closing and beautifully haunting melody of "Love Theme" is just that, filler. But unless you care to download the latter song by itself, this CD is worth buying if only for it's gorgeous closing theme song alone. I'll lay money down I'm not the only one who ventures down memory lane when hearing the closing theme song. Any takers?

With the help of some friends (James Taylor and Alison Krauss lend some vocal support), the trio of Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mark O'Connor have created yet another fascinating hybrid of chamber music and bluegrass. This follow-up to 1996's Appalachia Waltz is filled with highly lyrical string passages, a homage or two to Copland, and plenty of tracks where Meyer's bass vamps with the best of them. This is reflective (and relaxing) music, lacking the intricate structure of classical music and the rough edges of folk. But, boy, is it catchy! Yo-Yo Ma fans may be disappointed to hear that--aside from the gorgeous "Duet for Cello and Bass"--the cellist takes more of a supportive role on this disc. Still, this is fun music, more intimate than Short Trip Home (Meyer's other crossover project for Sony), but still lively (just check out "1B" or "Caprice for Three"). --Jason Verlinde

Best on the Planet!.......2006-03-24
These are flawless preformances of great music by some of the most talented artists on the planet. Slumber My Darling will leave you so relaxed you'll have to remember to breathe. The reels will bring you to your feet. This music reaches the soul as well as the ear.
Stilted.......2005-12-15
I suppose you will enjoy this if you really like Yo-Yo Ma at his most boring. This is glorified elevator music and about as interesting.
Walking the trail.......2005-08-07
I actually heard this cd while having a root canal done at the dentist's office. I find the music so wonderful and the vocal segments are great. It does make you feel like you are walking the Appalachian Trail...and makes a root canal painless!
Superb concert.......2005-08-02
I have bought two copies of this disc -- one for my car. The music is wonderful, and the performances are memorable. There's a DVD version, which is equally good. The performers obviously loved working together, and that's fully evident.
Too Studied.......2005-06-22
Two of my favorite CDs in the last couple of years were "Obrigado Brazil" and "In Full Swing" by Yo Yo Ma and Mark O'Connor respectively. I found both of those CDs to be fine examples of genre-busting joyful music making. So when I saw these guys paired here, I snapped it up. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.
The music throughout most of the CD sounds too labored, too studied. It is, frankly, not that inspiring. The playing throughout is, of course, of the highest calibre and the recorded sound excellent. But there is no hint of the exhuberance of Folk or Bluegrass which is the supposed inspiration for the disc. The guest spots by James Taylor and Alison Krauss are good but they sound like outtakes from their own CDs, these songs are out of context here. (But note how many other Amazon reviews reference their contributions as reasons for loving the CD. Perhaps so many five star ratings because these people need broader musical exposure?)
Too many critics over intellectualize. I base my ratings on one simple criterion: How much did the music move me? In this case, not much.

Louisa May Alcott's novel Little Women concerns four sisters in post-Civil War Massachusetts, but at times it feels as if its musical adaptation should have been called "Little Woman," so focused on a single sibling it is. Both Allan Knee's book and Sutton Foster's natural charisma and energy help constantly train the spotlight onto tomboy Jo. Yet it's not that much of a problem because Foster is strong enough to carry the show. She gets excellent support from the rest of the cast and especially cabaret artist Maureen McGovern, who as Marmee gets two beautiful ballads ("Here Alone" and "Days of Plenty") that are tailor-made for her imperial, burnished tone, and could well acquire a life outside the show. Composer Jason Howland worked as either musical director or musical supervisor on three period-set Frank Wildhorn musicals (Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel and The Civil War), which gives him a distinct experience in dealing with the historical setting here. Although the score oftentimes veers to the bland side, Howland also shows encouraging signs of spryness ("Five Forever") and melodic confidence that at one point slyly honors Sondheim ("Astonishing"). Old-fashioned in the best possible way, Little Women makes a good complement to Wicked for those trying to entice a younger audience to the delights of the musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Love It!!!.......2007-06-27
My school is going to be doing this musical next spring so I bought this CD in order to prepare for it. I fell in love with the music. Much like the book, it is personal, tender, and real. Some songs are just so heartwrenching I want to cry (but maybe I am a little bit of a drama queen). Simply gripping, I would highly recommend this CD to anyone who loves musical theater.
Beautiful and better than expected.......2007-05-15
I had heard so many mixed things about this show, and so I missed the chance to see it on Broadway. Well, now I am sure wishing I had seen it, because the story that unfolds on this CD is so beautiful and so reminiscent of the book I adored when I was a "little woman." I cannot imagine anyone not enjoying the joyous romp and sense of adventure that imbues this musical journey. Nearly every song captivated me, though I must admit it took a few passes before I finally embraced the entire score. Now I giggle with delight at the "Operatic Tragedy," "Our Finest Dreams" and "The Weekly Volcano Press." I also love "I'd Be Delighted," as Meg and Jo prep for the ball, and I adore Laurie's "Take a Chance on Me." Such passion! And the composers completely capture Jo's yearning to be something more in "Astonishing." Fantastic!
The ballads are simply gorgeous! I cannot get through Maureen McGovern's song, "Days of Plenty" without sheeding tears. And "The Fire Within Me" is likewise a heartfelt testamanet of love for one's family. So beautiful!
Open your heart, ears, and imagination to Little Women and enjoy the journey.
Good Idea Gone Bad.......2007-03-16
I loved the book Little Women, and I love musicals, but this CD did not blend the two well at all! I could barely get through the CD, there may be one or two songs I would listen to again, but not very often. It was difficult to see how these songs could do justice to the mood of the book. I feel that they hurt the story. I don't recommend buying this album.
What a BORE!.......2006-07-22
Saw the show in Washington and nearly fell asleep. Should never have been made. The score is dismall with a couple of all too brief moments of musicality, wisely given to Maureen McGovern. However, it's not enough to save this misguided mess. Skip the CD, pick up Jane Eyre, a musical version of a classic that works beautifully and deserved more success than it acheived.
Foster Showcase.......2006-05-06
Little Women is all about Sutton Foster. She does a great job, but as shown by the earily closing of the show it, one actress can't fix a flop. The songs in Little Women which tell a story or forward the plot of the show like "Weekly Volcano Press," "Astonishing," and "An Operatic Tradegy" are good and very entertaining, however a lot of the other songs in the show are stagnant. Basically any number without Foster or McGovern in it is not worth listening to. The show comes across as having good intentions. Though it has some good songs (I know people who have used some as audition pieces well), it does not seem to jump out at the audience at all.
