5 out of 5 stars A Nearly Unknown Gem.......2007-04-10

I bought this cd from Amazon after I couldn't find it, along with two other Pixies cds, anywhere else. When I first played it it fulfilled all my expectations. This album has many unreleased and odd treasures that every Pixies fan should hear. You have the tracks "Make Believe" and "I've Been Waiting For You", which are sang by David Lovering and Kim Deal, respectflly. They give the Pixies different sounds, but ones that sound right at home with Black Francis's own vocals.

Along with those songs you have "Santo", "Build High", and "Theme From NARC", all classics that could have been the basis of a whole other new cd, but have found their place on this awesome disc-shaped piece of plastic.

Also you have some alternate versions of some of their best works, such as "Vamos", one of my personal favorites; "The Thing", an alternate ending to the song "The Happening" on Bossanova's album; and an instrumental version of the song "Letter to Memphis".

Altogether, I say if you are a Pixies fan, this is a must-have. If you are just getting into them I suggest listening to Doolittle, Surfer Rosa, and Trompe le Monde first. But in the end, pick up this gem that will be candy to your earholes.

5 out of 5 stars Away with the Pixies.........2006-09-06

This 2001 collection of Pixies B-Sides is really a must have for Pixies fans. A very solid grouping. In chronological order you can feel how the EPs go from 'Surfer' to 'Trompe' with the first tracks feeling gritty and raw and generally better than the later tracks (and feature more Kim Deal vocals; proving that Deal was just as important to the group as Black).

5 out of 5 stars More from The Pixies.... no: this is The Pixies.......2005-08-23

5 out of 5 stars what you see is what you get.......2005-02-17

This is a great CD if you're a Pixies fan. It's probably not a good introduction to the band, but who starts listening to a band with its b-sides? And at 19 tracks, 4AD didn't skimp. There's a lot of great songs or alternate takes here that never made their US albums. This and the recently released "Purple Tape" are must-haves for Pixies fans.

5 out of 5 stars Best B-Sides Ever.......2005-02-13

My dad introduced me to this band like he did Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Violent Femmes. Well maybe Violent Femmes were my uncle. All through my life favorite bands have come and gone. Yet it looks like Pixies are going to stay. I first heard this band at the begining of the school year in 2004. Now its 2005 and lets get to this album.

This album is awesome. Period. It is the only B-Sides album I have ever liked. Even when I got the Nirvana Box Set most of there B-Sides sucked. Lets go track to track. That will be pretty helpful.

River Euphrates is a great song that was re-recorded to be made a b-side for Gigantic. The version on Surfer Rosa was better, but this version is good too. Vamos and In Heaven are 2 live tracks that were from a concert in England which the whole concert is on the DVD of Pixies. You should check that out too. They both are great songs and fun to listen to. Manta Ray is a great song with a catchy, but simple guitar solo. Wierd At My School is a good song, but the lyrics are sick and perverted. But hey its great!

Dancing The Manta Ray is one of my favorites and has the most catchiest guitar riff ever. Wave of Mutilation(UK Surf) is wonderful and just might be better than original version. Into The White is a great song sung by Kim. I have a major crush on her even though she has aged over the years and isn't that hot anymore. Bailey's Walk is awesome about an old dude who has to stop, tap his head, and do a spin every few steps. One of their best songs. Make Believe is a good song sung by David Lovering who is great at singing.I've Been Waiting For You is a great cover song by Kim also.

The Thing is just a take of from The Happening from Bossanova, but is real catchy. Velvety Instrumental Version is awesome and Frank Black wrote lyrics to it for Frank Black and the Catholics, but its not as good. Santo is an alright song that is catchy, but Theme From Narc is a different story. Sorry Pixies. I'm your biggest fan and all, but this song sucks real hard. Build High is awesome and make me laugh just because of the way Frank and Kim sing "Build High". Evil Hearted You is great even though it's all in Spanish and Letter To Memphis sounds even better as an instrumental version.

Thats it. Plainly you can see that only one song on this CD sucks, but everything else is great. Get this CD as soon as you can. It's awesome

A Vision in Monochrome, Eyes Sooty with Mascara, Hair Piled Up to Perfection, and a Sequinned Dress So Glamorous that it Suggests We Could Barely Inhabit the Same Planet: The High Contrast Photo that Adorned the Cover of Dusty Springfield's Greatest Hits was Iconic. In It's So-sharp Black and White, There was Much Mystique - it was as Much About What You Couldn't See - which is Exactly as it Should Be. These Days Dusty is a Gay Icon, Seemingly Celebrated for her Troubles and Insecurities as Much as She is for her Records. For Those who Like Pop Music to have Myth and Legend, the Ability to Take You Over the Rooftops and Out of Your Skin, the Run of 45s on this Compilation is all You Really Need to Know About Dusty Springfield.

5 out of 5 stars PEERLESS BLUE-EYED SOUL FROM DUSTY.......2007-07-01

Practically every one of Dusty Springfield's singles from 1963 to 1970, the hits and the "obscurities". An omission is her US hit "Wishin' and Hopin'" - but then, this 2 CD set only claims to include "all the British singles from her goldern era". This distinction reminds us that seldom did her record company choose the same A&B sides for the States as had been released in the UK. For example, her hauntingly fragile rendition of Carole King's "Goin' Back" was unbelievably never released in the States as a single - despite its top ten status in Britain.

What a strong testimony this 2 CD set is to her unequalled grasp of the Phil Spectorish girl-group sound, R&B, Motown and soul. Compiled by Saint Etienne, with well-detailed liner notes by Bob Stanley, this set gives us the mono mixes, so there's no attempt made to dress up the classic mono sound. Stand out hits are: "I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten" and "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" - this latter hit just keeps getting better with the passing of time. Stand out obscurities are: "I'm Gonna Leave You" (one of the few times Dusty wrote a song; this time sharing the credits with Madeline Bell and Lesley Duncan) and "Don't Say It Baby". These latter two songs ache with compelling sadness and add to the already solid case for Dusty's place as the best British female singer ever!

5 out of 5 stars The Singular Source .......2006-11-10

Excellent compilation of Dusty's A & B sides, most in their original mono form. Ace sound and presentation. The best introduction to Dusty on the market.

5 out of 5 stars Finally... an ESSENTIAL Dusty compilation .......2006-09-20

Do we need yet another Dusty compilation when the market is already flooded with them ? Well, the short answer is a resounding YES because Mercury finally gets it right by putting out a truly essential compilation with a theme - her Complete A & B sides released in the UK between 1963 and 1970 and the result is simply smashing. There's no messing about. The singles are in strict chronological order with the A sides on one disc and the B sides on another. They are also in rare mono - the original singles mix - unless the tapes are unavailable, in which case the familiar stereo mixes are used (eg, Losing You and Little By Little). Some of the hits are aurally very different in mono (eg, Goin' Back) and a special treat. Some of the fades also run on longer than usual (eg, In The Middle Of Nowhere and Some Of Your Lovin').

Dusty's glorious non-stop run of hits (plus a couple of unconscionable misses such as the funky Northern Soul classic, What's It Gonna Be and Clive Westlake's excellent I Will Follow You) on Disc 1 simply leaves you breathless and giddy with joy and admiration at how in the 60s Dusty was faultless in her selection of original material for singles. Songs tucked away on the B sides were almost as good. Four were even written or co-written by her (Once Upon A Time, Something Special, I'm Gonna Leave You and Go Ahead On). My own personal favourite is the little known Goffin & King girl group beat number I'll Love You For A While, given a real punchy treatment here.

And you can't ask for more in terms of packaging. Eclipse has used a gorgeous photo of a sooty-eyed Dusty circa 1965 for the front cover and it's just fabulous ! Complete A & B Sides 1963-1970 is truly an essential buy. Hurry, grab yourself a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Still a lady killer!.......2007-01-10

What can I say about Frank and his wonderful range of songs. His voice covers a great range from love songs to slightly quirky numbers.Good listening at a dinner party for over 40's.

5 out of 5 stars Frank Ifield CD.......2006-08-28

I recieved the CD very quickly. This CD set is very popular with 'us' older ones. The music is very good.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music - Beautiful Voice.......2005-11-15

Frank Ifield has an amazing voice and uses it with wonderful results. On the Complete A & B Sides there is not a bad recording although there are some songs that are his alone even though they might be a cover of another artist's song. Some of the really great ones like "Paradise" and "I Remember You' are unforgetable but to listen to "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" shows the true beauty of his voice. Frank has a tremendous range and control of his voice and uses it with great effect. My only complaint is that he did not do recordings of Gospel and Spirituals. With that voice it would have been priceless.

5 out of 5 stars A country singer at heart.......2005-11-10

Just to clarify the title - it is actually the complete UK A-sides and B-sides, together with four German versions of his UK hits and a 2004 re-mix of his biggest hit. Frank's Australian recordings from the fifties can be found on a budget compilation (Sings country and classics), which is also on the EMI label.

Frank was born in England but raised in Australia, later to return to the UK to establish his singing career - a pattern subsequently repeated by Olivia Newton John. Whereas Olivia eventually based herself in America, Frank remained in the UK, playing the small country music circuit long after his pop successes were a distant memory. Country music has never been huge in Britain but it has enjoyed a reasonable level of support especially since the seventies. In the sixties, Frank Ifield discovered - as did the husband and wife team of Miki and Griff - that there was no significant following for the music. Frank, together with Miki and Griff, George Hamilton IV and a few others, helped to change that.

Like Miki and Griff, Frank had to compromise his music to get it heard but anybody listening to it will realize that Frank is a country singer at heart. A look at the track listing will show that Frank liked to cover country songs, although many pop singers also did that in those days.

Frank started his UK chart career with a couple of minor hits (Lucky devil, Gotta get a date) in 1960 but then disappeared from the charts until the summer of 1962, during which time he released several excellent singles including Tobacco road (later a hit for British R+B group the Nashville Teens). Those early UK recordings were done with a view to commercial success although they weren't like Frank's Australian recordings.

In 1962 and with only one single to be recorded before his contract expired, Frank decided he would be himself. At least he'd show EMI what he was really like. The result is an object lesson to all singers as Frank recorded a 1940's show song (I remember you) in a pop-country style. It became the first of three consecutive UK number one hits. Of course, EMI hastily renewed Frank's contract and allowed him more freedom to choose what he recorded.

Next came Lovesick blues, a song dating back to the 1920's but generally regarded as a Hank Williams classic - indeed, many make the mistake of thinking Hank was the original writer. Frank's version is very distinctive. The B-side (She taught me to yodel) also proved extremely popular and was for a time credited as a second A-side.

Wayward wind (a cover of the fifties classic) followed, then came a UK number four hit (Nobody's darlin' but mine) and a further number one (Confessin'). Frank then had another minor hit (Mule train) in October 1963. In the summer of 1964, Frank had one last top ten hit (Don't blame me) followed by six further minor hits up to the end of 1966. After that, he disappeared from the charts completely until a he had surprise minor hit in 1991 on a different label (The yodelling song), which is an old song (She taught me to yodel) with a different title.

Frank has been unable to sing since 1986, after which he returned to Australia. In 2004, I remember you was re-mixed to include steel guitar. Frank had originally wanted to record the song with a steel guitar but was unable to find a top player in the UK and ended up using a Hawaiian guitar (the steel guitar's ancestor) instead.

Frank did much to improve the status of country music in Britain. He may have compromised his sound to appeal to pop music fans, but so have plenty of others. If you just want the hits, a single CD is available (Essential Frank Ifield), but this collection is well worth the extra cost.

2 out of 5 stars Soggy Arrangements.......2006-12-20

Although she's well before my time, I love watching Alice Faye in her movies. Most of the divas from that era do little or nothing for me, but she is a rare exception. There is a lack of pretentiousness in her. She's about the only A list female star from that era whom I find sexy. Sadly, the tunes on this cd suffer from lackluster arrangements. I agree with one reviewer about the same songs being more exciting in the films. I believe that this is so for most of the singers in film from that era. The studio recordings are never as exciting or beautiful as the arrangements on the soundtracks. Don't waste your time with this cd. If you enjoy Alice Faye, buy her movies whenever they are available on dvd. I even own the Shirley Temple one that Alice Faye is in, "Poor Litte Rich Girl," just to watch her.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Place to Begin.......2006-04-15

Just where the site's product reviewer got the idea that Alice Faye dropped out of the public eye after her scrum with Darryl Zanuck in the mid-1940s escapes me---unless he/she was completely unaware of eight years (1946-1953) worth of a radio hit with husband Phil Harris, on which there were perodic little digs at Zanuck and Fox over his perceived duplicity in bumping Faye for Linda Darnell.

But never mind. One of the treats of the Harris-Faye radio hit was Faye's singing voice (she and Harris, himself a singing bandleader, invariably took a musical turn each on the sitcom), whether caressing a ballad or swinging easily. This set of recordings from a decade earlier is a perfect place to start appreciating Faye's singing voice(she isn't exactly an obscurity as an actress), a honeyed contralto which survives the passage of time and sounds alternatively romantic and playful, even if some of the material with which she was saddled during this period of her career doesn't. Even on some of the more banal selections Faye releases a deliciously affecting vocal presence enough to make you think she could have forged a lasting presence if she'd chosen to sing with the popular jazz orchestras of the day.

Come to think of it, it would be a phenomenal treat to mulct an album of the best of Faye's song performances from the old Harris-Faye show, if it hasn't been done already.

4 out of 5 stars A nice idea but already available.......2006-02-17

The life of Alice Faye is a fine example of the fulfillment of the American Dream. Faye was born in New York into a working class environment. She left school to earn a living at the age of 13. She started in the chorus and rose through the New York nightclub scene, Broadway and eventually radio, as a singer with Rudy Vallee, to become the best example of the girl who sang at the microphone. Her film career began in 1934 and she quickly rose to the top. Her commercial recording career only existed for 4 years from 1933 to 1937.

The idea of creating a complete record of her commercial recordings was sound but unfortunately, this CD contains only one track, "My Future Star", which is not already available on a cheaper CD which contains a few extra soundtracks too. All of the songs, with the exception of the first 2, appeared in Faye's films, even if not performed by her. While many of them are long forgotten, all benefit from Faye's trademark warm smooth contralto but they often lack the vitality of their equivalents on film. Possibly one exception is the recording of "Wake up And Live" which has a delightful bouncy arrangement.

There is no doubt that a Faye close up enhanced her vocals, if that makes sense, as another reviewer has noted, because Faye was a very pretty woman with beautiful eyes. I suspect too that the 20th Century Fox magicians might also have been able to add a few tricks because she does sound better on film than here in general.

3 out of 5 stars Alice Faye's 1930s Commercial Recordings.......2005-12-04

At the top of her career at 20th Century Fox, beginning with the 1938 double-whammy of "Alexander's Ragtime Band" and "In Old Chicago" (both available on DVD) and ending with the underrated 1945 film noir "Fallen Angel", Alice Faye was contractually forbidden (like Betty Grable would be too) from releasing commercial recordings of the songs performed in her films. This means that, with the exception of "Rose of Washington Square", whose soundtrack was remastered when released on CD, Faye's film recordings (including "You'll Never Know", her best song) are only available in poor quality CDs taken from her movies.

This CD collects her previous commercial recordings, consisting mostly of songs from the films she made between 1934 and 1937. Unfortunately, with a few exceptions, like the Irving Berlin songs (from 1937's "On the Avenue"), "Goodnight, My Love" (from the Shirley Temple vehicle "Stowaway") and "There's a Lull in My Life" (from the radio satire "Wake Up and Live"), most of the songs are on the mediocre side. Faye was also primarily a film star, not a recording star. By that, I mean that she sounds great accompanied by a close-up but only good without one. Still, Alice Faye has a warm, nice deep voice, and fans of 1930s music should enjoy this CD.
