Since his 1988 major-label debut, Darden Smith has gradually drifted away from prototypical Guy Clark-style Texas story-songs and ventured into less predictable territory. On Circo, a quietly powerful, sonically intriguing collection of spiritual ruminations ("God Loves a River," "100 Ways to Kiss the Ground"), ambivalent, new-age love songs ("We Make Love So Hard," "What Are We Gonna Do"), and haunting autobiographical sketches ("Mill Creek"), Smith has fallen under the subtle sway of Brazilian music. But the hushed intensity and acute powers of observation that make his earlier story-songs so powerful are still in full force. These gifts come into particularly sharp focus on "Late Train to London," a haunting travelogue that insinuates itself into the listener's imagination and echoes there long after the music has stopped. --Bob Allen

1 out of 5 stars Lousy - don't buy it!.......2007-05-04

My boyfriend listened to the whole disc, and hated every bit of it.
I heard a couple tracks, and wanted to turn it off after two songs.
Not anywhere near as clever or entertaining as his ILL-CONCEIVED album,
which is the first PDQ we've listened to.

Hello, hello hello howdy do,
my name is Zinging-able-nessedly,
but my frrrrrieeeeeeeeennnndddsss, just call me Zing!

3 out of 5 stars Lackluster.......2003-03-07

I agree with most of the other individuals who have written comments. The first piece, "The Short Tempered Clavier" is, by far, the best piece on the CD. The other works seem oddly derivative of it. There isn't the usual variety in the pieces which Schickele includes (one or two instrumental, one or two vocal). My personal suspicion is that since, years ago, Schickele announced his intention to stop his P.D.Q. Bach work in order to focus on serious compositions, this CD may have been part of a contractual obligation, or, perhaps, just an effort to get the last of the P.D.Q. Bach pieces recorded.

While the "Short Temepered Clavier" is a good piece, its probably not worth the price of the CD. If you were looking for a good P.D.Q. Bach album, I'd buy "Oedipus Tex" or "1712 Overture" or even the lesser-known (but really funny) "Lieberslieder Polkas and Twelve Quite Heavenly Songs".

4 out of 5 stars Great music; forgettable setting.......2003-02-14

I'll get the bad news out of the way first. The "setting" for this performance is allegedly a Senate committee hearing room, where they are debating some ridiculous amendment to the Constitution. All of the sections of the CD where the Professor is just talking to the Senators are rather dull -- I guess Schickele was trying to get in his verbal jokes, like he does in his (hilarious) live performances, but it just falls flat here.

On to the good stuff. The Short-Tempered Clavier is some of PDQ's most inventive writing yet. Of all the solo piano PDQ music that Schickele has put out, this is some of the most cerebral ... There are quotes from other works that you don't hear until you've listened 3 or 4 times -- they're deeply imbedded. The fugue subjects are all quite ridiculous -- Beethoven's 5th, "The Worms Crawl In...", etc. (except for the last), and they are given the full PDQ treatment. The last one (in B-flat) is notable in that the fugue subject is B-A-C-H (see J.S. Bach's "Art of the Fugue", Liszt's treatment, etc.), which PDQ also manages to *invert* (something that old J.S. did once in a while, to show off his stuff). But as soon as you think the fugue might be getting serious, there is an outburst of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow". Then back to the fugueing. Marvelous stuff.

PDQ does the same thing in the Toccata -- it starts out with the theme of Dad's warhorse Toccata & Fugue in D minor -- only the subject is inverted (it goes up instead of down). This is an example of the oft-mentioned principle that the more you know about music theory and history, the funnier PDQ's stuff is.

Not PDQ's best work, but some of it is close. Not Schickele's best CD, but not bad, either.

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but not the best of PDQ Bach.......2002-04-18

Others have written here of the slight difference between Peter Schickele's "early" and "late" PDQ Bach performances, hence it is slightly surperfluous to say that the more recent Telarc recordings (of which this is one) lack the sparkle and 'zany' character of the earlier ones from the 1970s.

They are certainly still as clever: "The Short-Tempered Clavier" is of course a spoof of J. S. Bach's "Well-Tempered Keyboard", laced with quotations from other areas of the pianists repertoire as well as having the odd snatch of a very familiar tune here and there.

The whole disc is set out as the document of a lecture given by Peter Schickele to a group of skeptical, 'unmusical' US senators, with the PDQ Bach keyboard works woven in as musical examples. Hence, as well as the title work (played on piano), the programme also features appearances by a theatre organ (on which is played the "Pochelbuchlein" - "The Little Pickle Book"), a calliope (used for the "Sonata da Circo" - "Circus Sonata" - the rendition of which is cut short by the explosion of the instrument!) and the organ of the King Congregational Church (get it?!) which is little more than two synthesisers stacked on top of each other.
Each piece is fun, although the impact of the musical jokes will vary depending upon how musically-minded the listener is. In other words, musicologists, pianists and organists are likely to get the most laughs out of the programme. The liner notes add an extra dimension to the fun by containing, as well as a "scholarly essay" on the history, discovery and publication of the music, various quips about those involved in the production of the recording, with in-jokes including a 'specification' of the King Congregational Church organ...

Take it or leave it ... as a Christmas or birthday gift for a musical friend or family-member, it wouldn't be a bad choice.

2 out of 5 stars Some good tracks.......2002-03-01

I enjoyed the Short-Tempered Clavier pieces tremendously. Played masterfully by Christopher O'Reilley, they are witty and delightful. A new suprise is always around the corner, and upon my first listen I found myself grinning and sometimes laughing out loud.

Then comes the rest of the album.

In the succeeding pieces, Schickele uses the same jokes, the same tunes, and crummy synthesized instruments that become so annoying that I just want to turn the thing off.

Do yourself a favor and leave after the first act.

Overshadowed by their Mexican rock brethren and hugely popular Los Caifanes in Mexico in the early '90s, Maldita Vecindad nonetheless carved out a niche as the best south-of-the-border rock-punk-ska outfit. This CD helped put them on the map in 1991 and opened doors for subsequent U.S. tours. From the frenzied ska fever on "Pachuco" to the casual salsa-samba hints in "Kumbala," Maldita play a wide range of worldbeat rhythms. Instantly catchy is the melodic "Tono," with hard, snapping beats and tense bass lines producing cool dance-rock rhythms. But the band also displayed its taste for humor on the offbeat "Pata de Perro" rocker and infused the horn-driven "Un Poco de Sangre" with just a smidgen of soul. --Ramiro Burr

4 out of 5 stars Refreshing Mexican Rock.......2000-03-17

Bueno, unlike all the rest of you all I am not going to give 5 stars to a CD that is mearly very good, and this CD is. Maldita, has a quick funk/ska/punk/latin sound that complaments the real feeling of Ciudad de Mexico's modern rock scene....... that I was fortunate enough to get to know last year. This band is important to Mexican rock,as that it has not sold out as so many Mexican rock groups do. The best song on the album (in my opinion) is Pachuco (if you need to wake up a party put this song on). The whole CD is tight, and in my top 10 in Spanish.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!.......1999-05-17

I love there work not only because Lalo the saxaphone player is related to me, but because they are real talented.Im from Laredo and when they had a concert there it was bad a**.

5 out of 5 stars It's the best Maldita Vecindad CD out of the 4........1998-12-01

Maldita Vecindad's "EL CIRCO" is a mixture of many styles of music. It's pretty cool. I say it's the best of all four CDs, including the last one. A faster version of "EL CIRCO" is "EN VIVO:GIRA PATA DE PERRO" Which is cool too, because it's the live version of the songs. In other words the songs of this CD are MALDITA VECINDAD's BEST.

5 out of 5 stars Bienvenidos al Circo (Welcome to the Circus).......2005-01-03

Forget everything you know about Latin Rock...forget about Santana influences, ska, reggae, or anything you think latin rock is...because Circo will blow your mind. Think of a music mix between Talking Heads and Simple Minds, and a singer which is (Queen's) Freddie Mercury, (The Cure's) Robert Smith and Celia Cruz all role into one, and you end up with an eclectic cocktail call Circo. This is a new version of the album, that includes a bonus live cd, and let me tell you, if the music is good, the shows are an spiritual ejaculation experience, very hard to forget. I was in the show, and I was nothing less than wet. I recommend this album to anyone with an open mind, capable enough to enjoy erotic spiritualism and creative musicianship. Let's just hope that their second album "En el cielo de tu boca (In the sky of your mouth)", to be release on February 15, is just as good. Enjoy and...Que vivan los reyes, y la madre que los pario (Long live the kings and the mothers that gave birth to them)!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Like A Leaf on the Wind.......2004-10-17

Darden Smith's "Circo" is an amazing song cycle, a wonderful achievement. Prior to this, "Deep Fantastic Blue" was my favorite of his albums. "Circo" is less obvious, certainly mellower. One sign of a great CD is when different reviewers pick different tracks as their favorites. One professional reviewer picked "Shooting Star" and "Mill Creek" as the best.

For me the spiritually-oriented songs are his greatest achievements. Some music lovers become threatened by spirituality, thinking that someone may try to hit them over the head with their religion. While my deepest religious reflections have been most inspired by the teachings of The Urantia Book, I'm also at home as a Methodist, and certainly find a kindred spirit in Darden Smith's newest release. For me, the greatest of the 3 spirit song tracks is "Rise." Lloyd Maines' pedal steel gives a subtle country touch to Darden's mellow acoustic guitar and the calming confidence of his vocals, "See me as a boy safe beside my father, see my father say when he was a boy, 'Time marches on, the wheel is always turning,' watch me rise, watch me rise above, resting in His love." This is a song whose appeal will span generations. The next of my favorites is the perky "God Loves A River" with its soft-shoe beat and the melody's quiet shuffle that for me emphasizes how, in a spiritual sense, what we try to do is more important than what we actually accomplish, "Fairy tales to rummage sales, we all love a dream, life is so damn messy, love is so unclean, you cannot hold a hand that is a thousand miles away, best to let it go, the reasons we may never know, God loves a river even if that river never hits the sea." "One Hundred Ways" sounds like a pop march with Michael Ramos' accordion adding a sweet musical spice, "It's an endless song that makes a holy sound... My God & your God, they're one & the same, they sit around talking as friends, laugh at the sunset, cry at the moon." Of the love songs, my favorite is "Make Love So Hard" with Kim Richey joining on vocals in a tune about how sometimes two people need to work at their love relationship. The song has as much practical wisdom as its melody is musically delightful. "Shooting Star" is also sweet with Smith's buddy Boo Hewerdine joining on vocals in a softly swaying tune. "Mill Creek" has bit darker melody and is a ballad that brings to mind Tony Joe White, "Sent me running, sent me screaming, like a wild man through the tall grass." All of the tracks on "Circo" are distinctive. Smith is at the top of his game as a songwriter and gives just enough musical support and flourishes to express rather than overpower these fragile melodies. Bravo!

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!!!.......2004-06-09

Great set of new Darden Smith songs, but this one has
it all. Yeah, I suppose you could do the dishes with this music(as the big Darden Smith fan writes in a review previously) some Darden Smith fan!
I prefer to drive my car alone with the sound up loud and
let this music go right through me, I can relate to much of
what darden has to say and I like the spiritual side as well,
after what happened 9/11 people just look inward at times,
its nice to see Darden reflecting about life, love, a future? This music just gets under your skin,(you need to listen to
it for awhile, it is more than special and with his voice
driving these numbers along you couldn't ask for anything
more out of an artist with this much class. WOW everything
about this sleeper classic is right on, CIRCO has some
great grooves!! I hope this music finds an audience as it
deserves to be heard.

3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly disappointing.......2004-05-28

I could pretend that all the songs are as good as "Make Love So Hard", "Turning to You" and "Late Train to London". If only they were! Then we'd have another Sunflower on our hands. "Make Love So Hard" is a simple but perfect pop song. "Turning to You" is a proper Darden Smith song. "Late Train to London" is clever, intricate, atmospheric and moving; I love the way Darden's vocals connect with the bounce of the violin in the bridge part.
"Mill Creek" is pretty good too, but I'm not sure how it fits on this album. It feels to be from another place.
Truth is that the album starts off weakly with the rather lightweight and unimaginatively arranged "What Are We Gonna Do". It's a bit of a nothing song. "Shooting Star" is in a similar vein. Pleasant enough I suppose. But then it gets scary. "One Hundred Ways" is horrible: uptempo in a Casio keyboard sort of way, a bit too jolly, too worthy, like something you'd sing in a church group. "Hands on the Wheel" has an equally silly arrangement, and the awful line, "So go with God..." Do what? No, no. The next track has a seductive swing to it, but there's more God, and we run straight into "Rise" which is another churchy one.
"Circo" sounds okay if you stick it on while you're doing the dishes, but I expect so much more from Darden Smith. It must be middle age, or fatherhood or something that's turned Darden a bit woolly on "Circo". I want the old Darden back please.

5 out of 5 stars Best collection from Darden Smith..........2004-05-24

This is by far the best I've heard from Darden Smith. I
thought SUNFLOWER and LITTLE VICTORIES were excellent with so many great songs on each cd but this
new one from start to finish is so quietly powerful, full
of atmosphere and the most beautifully arranged and sung songs.
I keep playing this all through the day, so many favorites
and I'm still finding more and more to love about this 5 star
masterpiece. I put the head phones on not to miss anything in all that is going on. Dardens vocals just breath out his sensuality and placing Kim
Richey on "Make love so hard" is a perfect blending of voices like I haven't
heard in years. Nice twist of phrase to this song, this should
be getting airplay everywhere????????? Shawn Colvin also sounds just perfect along side
Dardens smooth, quietly affecting singing. The music, production
lyrics all flow together seamlessly, this has to be one of
the BEST song selections on any release in quite some time.
Darden has lightened up some but this type of music demands you
listen and take it all in. Can't say enough about this winner!
This is Darden Smith's masterpiece!

5 out of 5 stars Un nostálgico, dulce y radiante viaje con Fito.......2005-04-16

Imperdible y vital.

polished album, great, happy. yes, it is not classic fito, but it is fito, great fito. i love it, every single song is at least really good, some of them are great, a couple are spectacular.

    4 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!.......2003-01-09

This is one of my favorite albums. Both instrumentally and lyrically, this Argentinian remains in top form. Though not the best example of Fito's work (if you haven't heard him and can only buy 1 album), "Circo Beat" does contain a few classics and there are no "bad" songs on here. This is a must have for any Paez fan and highly recommended to fans of Spanish rock.

    4 out of 5 stars Un verdadero circo - A true circus.......2001-03-18

    ---------------
Paez is one of the most creative singer/songwriters from Argentina. His musical career is quite interesting, here he presents a musical montage filled with beautiful melodies and pure rock. This record reminds me of St. Pepper Band: an introspective survey to string music, tendencies, ideas and poetry. I see them as a series of songs under the same thematic idea. There are various songs that do fit this description. Nonetheless, its poetry serves as a modern addressing Argentinean literary obessions, as well as ideas from Buenos Aires. 'Mariposa multicolor (Multicolor Butterfly)' is a song to the seeping melancholy of our childhood. It brings back memories of a more naive time full with hope.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed to say the least..........2005-12-09

To say that I am disappointed by this latest release from the DC10 series is an understatement. Last years release mixed by Cirillo & Tania Vulcano was EPIC. It is still the best Album that I own. To this day!!!
Perhaps I haven't given this compilation a good enough try but it is way too experimental and downtempo for me. I have been to Ibiza and this is not really what DC10 is all about.

I disagree with the last reviewer that this is sleazy, sexy, pumping music. It's way to chill for my tastes. Hopefully, it will grow on me over time.

I definatly recommend picking up the 2004 DC10 (mentioned earlier.) It's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing Sexy Sleazy Pumping music!.......2005-08-28

DC10 Monday Morning Session is the most infamous party in ibiza.
In fact it is so popular and beloved by the Island's crowd that it gave Space no other choice than to close its gates on monday after parties.
This is the place to be on a monday if you are in Ibiza.
Sexy, Sleazy Pumpin House and Techno music combined in the clubs main room and Terrace creates real madness in the place.
With some of the finest music and residents around, this CD gives you the real genuine feel of DC10.
It starts minimal and mellow, to give you the feeling of the first few hours, but as the crowd gets inside, the place turnes into one big mayham, as dirty techno and acid riffs along with some nasty synths of electro come to recognition.
DC10 Circoloco is for those who just cant get enough, and this CD will get you going for as long as it takes.
Watch the DVD first to get the feeling of DC10's vibe, then turn on the volume and imagine you are there.
This cd features 2 of the clubs finest, Clive Henry and Locodice giving away the real secrets to DC10's explosive formula to get the crowd ballistic.
This is DC10 at its best - GET IT!!!

      5 out of 5 stars A well institutionalized circus........2005-04-07

En el cielo de tu boca is an album you would expect from a band that have been around for years, experimented with lots of different styles of music, made a comeback and released the best album of their career (can you say Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication); this album is a comeback to Circo's roots, the only weird thing, this is their second album. Different from their previous album, this one is not trying so badly to live up to the band's name, instead it's more focus on music as a whole in the slightest detail; even the album sound plays a very important role here. The influences (Bjork, The Cure, U2 and probably every singer from the late 70's-early 80's "bolero" scene a la Camilo Cesto) are perfectly blended together to create an exquisite "rock" cocktail, mature enough to please the most exigent music ctriticist, but playful enough to keep long time (Circo's lead singer) Fofe fans with a smile on their faces. This is probably the best "latin rock" record in many years.

5 out of 5 stars OTRA OBRA MAESTRA LLENA DE ENERGIA .......2005-03-10

CON UN NUEVO RITMO Y SONIDO, PERO CON LA MISMA CALIDAD DEL CD ANTERIOR. ES OTRO ROMANCE POETICO, SENSUAL Y LLENO DE ENERGIA QUE TE INSPIRA. ES OTRA OBRA MAESTRA QUE REDEFINE LA MUSICA LATINA. NO TAN SOLO EN EL CD, SI NO EN SUS CONCIERTOS DONDE TRANSMITE LA MISMA CALIDAD Y ENERGIA DE SU IMAGINACION, CON UN ESTILO INCONFUNDIBLE.

      FOFE PUERTO RICO TE ADORA!!!
Si hubieran 6 estrellas te las daba.

      3 out of 5 stars Big Circo.......2003-04-04

This CD is not what I expected. If your are looking for some new Tejano music then you have found it but if you are looking for something along the lines of Kumbia Kings type of songs then this is not it, try again. The cumbia's on this CD are good to listen to but I didn't care for the baladas.

      3 out of 5 stars Don't judge a cd by it's cover.......2002-06-20

With the group being called Big Circo and the band with clown make-up on the cover, I was not sure what to expect. With the cd being produced by A.B. Quintanilla, I was expecting something like Kumbia Kings. It's not. It's a good Tejano band whose main instruments are accordian and bajo sexto. Their are some great songs, but then their are some it can do without. Mainly Rancheras and cumbias with some balladas and boleros.
