Editorial Reviews

Product Description:
Maine native Dick Curless had long recorded for regional labels when songwriter Dan Fulkerson approached him with "A Tombstone Every Mile," the tale of a real-life stretch of Maine highway often lethal to truckers. Released nationally in 1965, the song became a #5 single for Curless and this, his first album for Tower Records, soon reached the Top Twenty on Billboard’s country album charts.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Signature truckin' tune and country-folk.......2004-12-01

The baritone-voiced, Maine-bred Curless had a broader range than his trucking themed hits might suggest. Though he could sing country inflected folk songs (similar, in many ways, to the early works of Waylon Jennings), he could also sing Western favorites, and croon straight-ahead pop songs. His signature, though, was this album's title cut, a harrowing tale of an icy Maine road - one of the genre's best.

Additional trucking hits would turn up on later albums, but this time out Curless turned to classics with a superb, funereal-paced "Streets of Laredo," a wonderfully laid-back cover of Roger Miller's "King of the Road," and a lightly Westernized cover of The Sons of the Pioneers' (by way of Jim Reeves') "Teardrops in My Heart." Some of the album's best tracks are its least produced, such as the acoustic guitar led bluegrass standard, "The Sunny Side of the Mountain" and Curless' superb waltz-time "Down by the Old River." Curless' dramatic baritone is also a fine match for the drama of Merle Travis' "Nine Pound Hammer" and the comedy of Wynn Stewart's "Uncle Tom."

Those who only know Curless from his trucking hits will enjoy this broader look at his folk-country and pop crooning.

4 out of 5 stars A 'Sixties country classic.......2004-09-22

A regional success up in New England, Maine's country croaker Dick Curless hit the Top 5 back in '65 with "Tombstone Every Mile," a classic tune that remains one of the best trucker songs ever recorded. Whether he really had what it takes to sustain a national career after that is debatable... As this album shows, he certainly had his limitations as a singer, and yet he also had a certain gravitas that could pull you in. On the sparser, more folk-oriented songs, he often ran out of juice, but with a good, solid, thumping backup behind him, he sounded pretty darn good. This disc is certainly worth checking out... and Curless's fans will be quite pleased to see this back in print as a reissue. (It's certainly easier to pick up than Bear Family's mega-box set, which has all the same material... and several CDs more! This one disc might be enough to get your feet wet...)

    This cdbox is incredible,a stunner.
And an whole cd with unreleased/rare recordings from mid 50`s Korean war to rare radio programs from USA.An incredible soundquality that only Bear Family Records can do.
Buy this box and the other Dick Curless box.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets!.......2002-03-22

This box set covers all the bases. Not only does it provide an intimate glimpse into the musical adventures of Dick Curless, it embodies the very essence of what great Country music is about. All catagories of Country are included; inspirational, gospell, hard country drinking songs, blues, yodels, cowboy ballads, and trucker anthems... you name it, Curless sings it...and all done with a voice that's a deep way down baritone, somewhat like Johnny Cash but silkier, smooth as good whiskey.
Dick Curless was true to the country tradition. Ever since a young boy he knew his destiny and spent his life perfecting it. This 7-CD box set begins at the start and covers almost everything he did up to 1970. It includes rare recordings from Korea(!), a debut on The Arthur Godfrey show, previously unissued tracks, and a Nine Pound Hammer's worth of pure country tunes sung with rare heart 'n soul....

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful step back to the roots of modern country music!.......1999-07-14

Gordon Terry's rich voice returns me to a time when country music was more than flash and production. He demonstrates a range of emotions within this wide range of country music. Thank you for reminding me what country music used to be. I've missed it!

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Memories.......1999-04-15

I first met Dick while he was a reuglar entertainer at the Thorndike Hotel, in Rockland, ME in 1963. I had been a fan ever since I first saw him on WMTV in the late 50's, before the Godfrey Show. I own eight of his LP's and was disappointed with the quality when I tried to tape them. I couldn't resist the box set, and I'm happy I didn't!!! I listened to the full set the night I got them; I laughed and I got misty. His covers of Tex Ritter's songs are great. "Coast of Maine" and "You Never Miss The Water" were the songs that he opened and closed his shows with. Goosebumps! His cover of Roger Miller's "King of the Road" is better that the original, and not only because Dick could pronounce Bangor correctly! Dick truly was as good, if not better, than any of the big stars out there today. Just think what he could have done with a Mel Tellis or Willie Nelson original. Ironiclly, I ordered the set on his birthday, St. Patrick's Day, and I didn't realize it until I read the discography!

5 out of 5 stars the greatest I have. An all day listen. give me more........1998-10-12

I have been a Dick Curless fan for many years. In my opimion he is the best entertainer ever. I also enjoy the book. I'm so glad this is available. It is a certain,"must" for a Dick Curless fan.I garantee you will be after you hear this.
