Over a decade of amiable and entertaining hits, Vince Gill has occasionally emitted flashes of greatness. On The Key, he finally opens up and taps his full artistic potential with a complete collection of stunningly powerful songs. Using spare instrumentation, and working amid a foundation of bluegrass and barroom country sounds, the recently divorced Gill concentrates on simply stated yet deeply felt songs about betrayal, loss, and the prospects of opening a bruised heart to another lover. Working with a variety of female harmony partners--including Patty Loveless, Alison Krauss, Shelby Lynne, and Sara Evans--Gill brings out the aching beauty of his tenor by settling into gorgeous melodies laid out with unadorned authority. By daring to bare his innermost feelings, he's achieved the greatness he's hinted at through the years. --Michael McCall

Vince deserves some kind of award for this new CD: It's masterfully country without any smarty pants retro kitsch whatsoever. With The Key it's like Vince decided to single-handedly revive the long-lost heydays and sounds of Owen Bradley, Buck Owens, Ernest Tubb and George Jones.

Songs in the Key of Life (1976) was the highest high point of Stevie Wonder's career. More sprawling than Innervisions and Talking Book, this two-LP-plus-EP was also less of a consistent stunner than either of those masterworks. That Songs retains an enormous amount of visionary relevance, though, is demonstrated not only in Coolio's borrowing of "Pastime Paradise" as a template for "Gangsta's Paradise," but in the cold-as-ice synthesized string quartet of "Village Ghetto Land." This is Stevie, so naturally that cut's anger is balanced by the ultra-buoyant "I Wish," "Sir Duke," and "Another Star." The 2000 reissue boasts radically improved remastered sound. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
My first choice for a desert island.......2007-07-08
The definition of music at its best........2007-06-17
Most artists these days stick to one type of music, rarely trying something different. Wonder, on the other hand, has mastered not only his usual R&B and funk songs such as "I Wish," but on this album he also throws in some Latin, classical and funk/rock fusion twists, and he delivers them just as well as his usual genre.
Wonder without a doubt has talent in songwriting. He sings about almost everything that you can sing about, such as world peace ("Love's In Need Of Love Today"), love ("Knocks Me Off My Feet"), heartbreak ("Another Star"), world problems ("Village Ghetto Land") and equality ("Black Man") to name a few. No matter what he sings about he delivers some of the best vocals, lyrics and composing of all time. Most of his songs are upbeat and danceable, such as "Ngiculela" and "Sir Duke." "As" and "Summer Soft" are the most beautiful, poetic songs on the album and the music accompanying them are just as extraordinary. The funk songs Wonder is known for are also here. "I Wish" and "All Day Sucker" are funkier than "Superstition" from the album "Talking Book." "Ebony Eyes" is a very fun song that has a slight Beatles feel to it.
Wonder also includes two instrumentals: "Contusion" and "Easy Goin' Evening." Both of them show Wonder's skill with instruments, especially the harmonica (in "Easy Goin' Evening") which he is very well known for. "Contusion" is a great display of R&B/rock fusion and is very fun to dance to.
With twenty-one songs on this album, each of them some of the greatest songs ever, it's difficult to not like the album. This is music at its absolute best.

Hawaiian slack-key guitar began evolving in the 1830s, when Spanish and Mexican cowboys brought guitars to the cattle ranches of the Big Island. It became a recognizable style around the turn of the century. The term refers to the practice of slacking some strings from standard tunings to create open tunings; the thumb provides the bass line while the other fingers play melody and improvise. It might thus remind some listeners of the fingerpicking of a country master like Doc Watson, but the style has a wind-blown, wide-open quality all its own. Traditionally an accompanying instrument in a group setting, slack key has recently moved out front, and this all-instrumentals CD shows why. From the light touch of Moses Kahumoku or Leonard Kwan to the bluesiness of George Keo or Ray Kane to the pop feel of Keola Beamer, it offers the best possible introduction to the music. --John MorthlandCustomer Reviews:

Here are the islands, the winds, volcanoes rising from the waves, morning light, beach sands. Here are smooth voices, restful voices. Here are joyful moods, playful echoes, and a fascinating blend of ancient textures with new age notions.
Get it. Play it. Play it again. Let it take you to new places where 'mahalo' grabs your soul. It is what it is. Relax. Enjoy.

A rare peaceful treat!.......2006-05-29
The tradition of Hawaiian slack key started in the 1800's when guitars were first introduced to the Islands. The instruments were adapted to Hawaiian musical traditions. Hawaiian musicians developed their own tunings which in some cases were passed down through the generations.
Ordinarily these guitarists are not heard solo. Luckily for us, we have this collection of Hawaiian slack key guitarists. Enjoy this beautiful album!

This second album in Dancing Cat Records' Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters Series produced by George Winston follows its successful Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Masters. Again the masters of the genre are featured in several well-known tunes such as Lili'uokalani's "Aloha 'Oe" (played here by George Kahumoku) and "'Ulili E" (Dennis and David Kamakahi), as well as modern originals and two tracks that had not been available on CD before: "Ulu Niu Ke'eke'e" (George Kahumoku and Kekuhi Kanahele) and "Slack Key Serenade" (Leonard Kwan and Ozzie Kotani). The liner notes provide complete information on each song's original album.A balance of instrumental and vocal tracks, the compilation is a terrific starting point for exploring the artistic and stylistic diversity in modern slack key. Instruments on this album include everything from traditional mouth bow, 'ukulele, and percussion stones to 12-string slack key and modern acoustic guitars. Elder statesman Ray Kane lullabies us with his simple instrumental "Popoki Slack Key" (popoki means "little cat"); renowned improviser Cyril Pahinui and Sol Hoopii-influenced Bob Brozman combine 12-string slack key and acoustic steel guitar interpreting "Hilo E" and "Lili'u E" in a style evocative of the 1920s. Showing off how slack key works solo, in duets, or with mixed accompaniment, this is one of the most beautiful slack key compilations out there. --Erik Macki

(In song sample #8 of "Masters II", Amazon spelled Cyril Pahinui's name with a "g", come on, let's give the Hawaiian artists the respect they deserve.)
This is NOT a sequel to Slack Key MastersI, but a beautiful extension and addition. The voices as well as the strings are sublime, just right in fact.

Lights and Sounds is a statement of intent: Yellowcard has grown up. Never "just kids" to begin with, the California-by-way-of-Florida quintet tackles thornier subjects than on 2003's Ocean Avenue, while taking a more ambitious approach towards their already proficient musicianship. Sean Mackin's surprisingly well integrated violin playing has always been a big part of their sound, but now they've upped the ante. Their third album doesn't just open with a pretty piano-based instrumental ("Three Flights Up"), but leads to a 25-piece orchestra, along with Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, on "How I Go." It may sound pretentious, but they make the unusual combination (pop-punk plus classical) work. On their second major label effort, Yellowcard comes across as serious to be sure--and this is nothing new--but not pretentious or silly. Affairs of the heart are as important as ever, but charismatic frontman Ryan Key has other matters on his mind. On "Two Weeks from Twenty," featuring Printz Board of the Black Eyed Peas, he sings, "We lost another one that we sent with a gun / They're gonna miss him he was two weeks from twenty." Then on "Words, Hands, Hearts," he laments, "The whole world is different now men have died." No longer bright-eyed teenagers, Yellowcard hasn't lost hope and their compassion remains boundless, but the times have changed, and so have they. --Kathleen C. FennessyAmazon.com
Lights and Sounds is a bigger, broader album from their platinum debut album Ocean Avenue, that finds Yellowcard moving away from songs about breakups and onto more expansive themes of artifice, war, and adulthood. The guitars are tougher, the songs more intricate and encompass a wider spectrum of musical styles, which is evident in the title track.

I have to disagree with one of the past reviews that mention this would be good for fans of Coldplay and/or Keane. I for one am a huge fan of Keane and I really like some of Coldplays music, but they are nothing like YC.
If I were to compare to other bands, I might ssy fans of Simple Plan would probably like this, but all in all I think ANYONE would love YCs music when it comes down to it.

Toronto's Metric has the ability to appeal to fans on a number of levels: the group captures the likeability of Elastica with the cheekiness of Blondie and then mixes that new wave style with just enough of a growling guitar to give it some oomph. Since their last release, the acclaimed Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?, Metric's sound has morphed slightly; this follow-up is a little more guitar-based and slightly less electronic than their last, a move likely to broaden their fan base even further.Metric's rock-meets-new-wave is not only timely, it is joyful to boot. The driving track "Handshakes" could easily qualify for the next ipod commercial, while "Monster Hospital"'s retro punk style has a Clash-inspired chorus that will stay in your head for days. By the same token, the band's musical diversity is especially evident in the beautiful "The Police and the Private," where one could easily imagine that they are listening to an up-tempo Sarah Harmer track. Metric's cross-genre appeal is at least party due to frontwoman Emily Haines' delivery. A smart writer and performer, Haines' contributions to the Broken Social Scene collective have already made her voice somewhat familiar, and in her own element she shines especially bright. From her delicate whispers (the Pink Floyd-esque "Ending Start") to her Eurotrash-inspired yelps ("Live It Out") Haines has the "it" factor that makes indie rock critics swoon, and keeps fans dedicated. --Denise Sheppard
Customer Reviews:
4.5; They just keep getting better..........2007-06-30
Empty: Starts out nice and slow before heavy guitars kick in and it just becomes a very groove-based track that's great to headbang too (it's fun to do vocalist Emily Haines' head movements which go sideways rather than vertically). 9.5/10
Glass Ceiling: One of the more enjoyable tracks on the album with a catchy main riff and the chorus being a nice quick sing-along. It just sounds like a fun track to listen to and tap your foot to. Only problem is it's slightly repetitive. 8/10
Handshakes: Even though there's a lot of elements to like about this one such as the fast-paced main riff, it doesn't really take off. Not that it's a bad track and you probably wouldn't skip over it but aside from a few things, it's hard to keep it in your head. 7/10
Too Little Too Late: After a long guitar riff, we get into a mid-tempo number with Emily's sexy vocals harmonizing with each other before it goes into a beautiful chorus which is mainly thanks to the guitar line underneath. Not really a pop hit but it's just a very enjoyable track to listen to. 8.5/10
Poster of a Girl: Some songs are just way too catchy for their own good. Everything from its ungodly catchy synth line to the guitar line played before it to Emily's sexy-as-hell repeating of the song's lyrics in French, it's an obvious highlight. 9.5/10
Monster Hospital: Very indie rock and loud and full of energy with a Clash-inspired chorus yet...I don't like it that much. Strange huh? It doesn't do anything wrong really and many love it and it was obviously a single but it's one of those songs where you're the odd man out. 7/10
Patriarch on a Vespa: Great beat although like Handshakes, it might be one of those tracks you like but probably won't go back to much. It's got its heavy guitars, Emily's vocals and good rhythm bass/drums-wise. Chorus and its noise solo saves it. Come to think of it: I like the song. 7.5/10
The Police and the Private: More catchy synth arpeggios and great interplay between it and the guitar. It's a great example of them building a kind of atmosphere without going completely nutso a la Empty or Monster Hospital. Album standout. 9/10
Ending Start: Kind of a weird song. Piano-based at its start with Emily harmonizing with a weird male voice with swirls going around all over the place. It's a nice sounding if off-kilter track but it's kind of missing a memorable hook to rope you in. 7/10
Live it Out: I love Emily's vocals at the start and when you think it'll be another ambience piece, it kicks up and rocks hard. Might not be a catchy sing along song but its rhythmic beat sets it apart and maybe not an ideal closer, it's certainly a good rocker. 8/10
It's too bad female fronted bands tend to be known more for its vocalist than anything. Everyone knows Emily just as everyone knows Amy Millan from Stars or Hayley Williams for Paramore but the band here does a great job at being a band and luckily, they come up with great records like this one.
I'm an addict.......2007-03-29
Not Old World, and definitely not Grow Up and Blow Away. Different band. Different sound........2007-02-14
I am grateful that Emily has a solo record... it's damn good and to me, it's the direction that Metric should have gone toward.
I do still love Emily's lyrics... but again, these songs just "rock", they don't send shivers down my spine like the ones on Grow Up and Old World (especially Grow Up...)
Maybe Metric's live shows weren't attracting audiences until they started rocking out more, with live drums as opposed to electronic trip-hop-influenced loops... maybe they needed more simple, noisy guitars to get people moving at shows... shame that that takes priority over heartbreaking piano parts and insanely catchy melodies. Again, I'm glad Emily made that solo record.
Metric, go back to your roots. Longtime fans have missed you.

The CD of chants is amazing. If you're still sitting down after a track or two, and your mind isn't reeling with curiosity about the ancient culture of Hawaii, you might need antidepressants...or maybe just the other CD in the set.
The second CD is the most lovely collection of meles. Pure acoustic nurturance! Seriously, if life has you down, do yourself a huge favor - sit or lie down in a cozy spot, close your eyes, and listen to "Maunaleo," the first track...and be warned, you may not want to get moving again until the end of the album. It's too lovely to rush away from.
I can't say enough about this collection. In a nutshell, if you love exquisitely moving music, you cannot go wrong with this one.
Beautiful singing; great, relaxing CD.......2006-06-06
Now I'm back in the mainland (Maryland,to be specific) wishing I could have stayed in that amazing place just a little longer. Yet, I did manage to bring some Hawa'iian music back home, and Kealii's cd is the most enjoyable, and the most relaxing, of all the music I brought back.
The 1st cd in Kealii's collection reminds me of the great people I got to meet while staying on the island. The music is warm, friendly, and sounds as if it is sung from the soul. The 2nd cd reminds me of the land itself, full of history and culture, impressive in it's majesty, yet respectful of the great ocean of the pacific. The chants on this cd are very impressive - they take you away.
Hawa'ii is a wonderful place, rich in culture; filled with gorgeous landscapes (and forests, and beaches, and oceans), friendly people, delicious food, and wonderful music. I recommend this cd to those looking for a taste of what that unforgettable island has to offer.

Offering a tribute to composers of previous generations, soprano saxophonist Kenny G uses his 11th career release to present his interpretations of various standards and assorted chestnuts from the past century. G's approach is as smooth and gentle as ever, and anyone in the market for mild-mannered, relaxing jazz should be satisfied with this package. Highlights include a slowly evolving version of George Gershwin's "Summertime," with George Benson on guitar, and a largely respectful rendering of Monk's "'Round Midnight." Subdued orchestral backing is used throughout the recording, and two vocal selections are included: a "duet" with the Louis Armstrong vocal track from "What a Wonderful World," and the subdued samba of "The Girl from Ipanema," which features singer Bebel Gilberto, daughter of the song's original vocalists. That selection is reprised instrumentally on an uncredited, nonindexed 11th track that is heard about 20 seconds after the conclusion of Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow." Languid listening from start to finish. --Terry WoodCustomer Reviews:

Music For People Who Hate Music.......2006-02-20
In a way, this is perhaps forgivable. Everything Henry Miller ever said about American bread is true, it's really unfit for anything except perhaps blotting up spilled ink. But there are those people who like bologna on Wonderbread, and why shouldn't they have their fun - or more properly - lack of fun? Perhaps Wonderbread is the only appropriate delivery mechanism for peanut butter and jelly. So be it.
In this context one can attempt to excuse the chain of albums churned out by Mr. G, like so many spiceless sausages. But one cannot forgive this. Here he approaches those who are far beyond being his betters, they're from a different dimension. To listen as KG addresses 'Round Midnight is to question the existence of God. A smooth jazz draft of Ipanema is rather like painting a polar bear in a snowstorm. But the height of impertinence and grandiosity is playing a duet with Satchmo. It was a tawdry bit of grandstanding when Natalie Cole did it with her dead father, but at least that was all in the family. Here it is a hideous attempt at bridging the gap that will forever separate the real from the really, really awful.

Of the slack-key guitarists that pianist George Winston has brought to light from Hawaii, the most eloquent and forward-looking is Keola Beamer, which is ironic given that Beamer's first album in 1973 was called Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar in the Real Old Style. There's nothing old about the music on Soliloquy. Unlike most of his brethren, Beamer rarely sings, and that seems to free him from the sometimes clichéd phrasing and melodies identified with Hawaiian music. Even without those signposts, however, Beamer's music is distinctly Hawaiian, beginning with the slack-key guitar. It's a standard acoustic guitar, but the strings are tuned lower--literally, slacker--than normal. It gives the guitar a lazy, wistful sound just shy of yearning. Soliloquy mixes Beamer's original compositions with traditional songs in unique arrangements, including some for two acoustic guitars. A bit more low key than his previous albums, and featuring more nylon than steel string, Soliloquy is a quiet meditation born from the idyllic environment of Hawaii. --John DilibertoCustomer Reviews:
