This is a strange, wholly original album, and it places Richard Buckner at the vanguard of, well, something, and it's entirely Buckner-esque. On The Hill Buckner sets to music passages from poet Edgar Lee Master's Spoon River Anthology. On previous outings his lyrics were as powerfully rendered as poetry, so at first it seems odd that he would rely on another's words. But the way Buckner bites, chews, and swallows the round vowels and hard consonant stops of Master's Midwest narratives, the voices resonate with fresh import. The music is powerfully original as well. Buckner's arrangements are organic to the voices and poems. The music clangs and shudders like an old jalopy then settles into a hushed wind-like whisper, Buckner's deep voice finding melody in the ebb and flow of the language. Even stranger is that The Hill is one continuous track--there are sections and movements and suites and passages, but it all flows like one continuous story. Few albums are this complex, evocative, and stunning. The Hill is Buckner's tour de force. --Tod Nelson
Amazon.com
Courageous, threatening, and often splendid in its brooding poetry, The Hill is like no record you've ever heard. Buckner fuses 18 poems from Edgar Lee Masters's Spoon River Anthology--an early 20th-century collection based on the tortured memories of the dead of a fictional Illinois town--into one long, spiraling descent into the dark corners of the human condition. There's anguish, violence, betrayal, and a lot of death here, but also some riveting, savagely original music. Buckner orchestrates his droning guitars and phantasmal keyboards with Calexico's bass, cello, and percussion. Like the themes, the music is somber but somehow opulent and graceful, often profoundly spiritual. Through it all Buckner's hoarse, glowering moan redeems these lost hunters, rounders, wives, and mothers. "In death therefore I am avenged," Buckner wails in the a cappella "Ollie McGee." In this demanding, hieratic epic, so too is Richard Buckner. --Roy Kasten

It's hard to imagine a more schizophrenic album than Fireflies, but Faith Hill, the comely pride of Star, Mississippi, had a lot of different factions to please. There's the country set, furious about the L.A. excess of 2002's Cry, as ravaged a pop album as ever made. Then there's the club set, which actually mistook Cry for music, and wanted more. Finally, there's Hill herself, still bruised from the critical drubbing the last album got, and obviously feeling the need to prove herself anew, going brunette to show her transformation. The bad news about Fireflies is that the all-out country songs--the autobiographical "Mississippi Girl," which practically begs forgiveness for Cry, and the cartoonish "Dearly Beloved," a hoedown ditty about a shotgun wedding--are embarrassing attempts to show that the Dixified diva hasn't gotten above her raising. Then, two other offerings--Darrell Scott's preachy protest number "We've Got Nothing But Love to Prove" and the beautiful torch ballad "Paris"--are both lyrical head-scratchers, and find the artist floundering as to who she is and what she's about. Where Hill knowingly flexes her muscle is in tackling three complex, literate songs by alt-folkie Lori McKenna--the title track (about the power of dreams), "Stealing Kisses" (about reevaluating life choices), and "If You Ask" (about living with a substance abuser). Hill gives these performances nuanced readings that say buckets more about her own life than "Mississippi Girl" could ever convey, and point to an emotional reservoir Hill is just beginning to tap. Here's hoping she goes back to that well again and again. --Alanna Nash

Faith at her best!.......2007-07-12
Faith is restored.......2007-07-06
Sunshine and Summertime - fun song about having fun in summer
Mississippi Girl - rock edge to it, has spark. Faith proclaims she is still a "Regular Jane" from Mississippi at heart.
Dearly Beloved - kind bluegrassy. Funny song about redneck marriage. "See the side effects of sex and alcohol."
Stealing Kisses - slow tune about wife/mother who is neglected in her family life
I Want You - starts with a quick beat. Alternates with a powerful singing of the chorus. Compares her want of lover to forces of nature [e.g., river seeking ocean]
Lucky One - a fun and bouncy tune like Sunshine and Summertime, but a bit more of a mesage. The singer realizes she doesn't have much stuff, but is lucky to have her lover.
Nothing But Love to Proove - spirited. Observations are kind of trite, but a nice tune
Paris - the extra track. About Paris after the liberation in WWII. Kind of a Casablanca theme but with happy results.
Fireflies is a must have.......2007-06-03
Great CD from a Great Artist.......2007-03-30
Great CD! It's Faith Doing What She Does Best, Singing.......2007-02-11
I do have one question about the song "Sunshine and Summertime." Why does it sound like the very beginning of the track is chopped off? It sounds like the band was already into playing the song when someone hit the record button. The song is really fun! But that intro sounds like something was chopped off. And it's like this on every copy I've heard. Anyone else notice this?
I feel that this is a great CD by faith hill as she learns and grows as an artist. Music is like an audio painting. and even artists who paint go through different periods. Some people will condemn Faith Hill for the 2002 "Cry" CD because it wasn't "more of the same." I commend her for having the courage to step over the line and taking that chance. I'm sure that she could play it safe and keep turning out the same kind of album over and over again. Then people would start whining about how she's in a rut. So, it seems that there really is no right choice. It has to be hard to go through thousands of demos and pick the ones that you think will make a great CD. You have millions of fans out there, and pleasing all of them is impossible! If I could talk to Faith, I'd just tell her to keep following your heart and your instincts. They will never lie to you, or lead you astray.
"Fireflies" is a great CD. And the next CD might be totally different from this one. But keep it in perspective. It's all music, and it's all good.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
The first solo album by the Fugees' most distinctive voice quickly wipes away the pretensions of so many current hip-hoppers' discs. It does so by both engaging their widescreen ethos--"To Zion," with its martial drums and gospel choir, is as epic a production as has been heard in 1998's pop music--and speaking the plain truth. Miseducation focuses equally on Lauryn Hill's life (especially the birth of her child) and social concerns about the present and future. Its often quiet surface, if anything, lends intensity. --Rickey WrightAmazon.com

It does so by both engaging their widescreen ethos--"To Zion," with its martial drums and gospel choir, is as epic a production as has been heard in 1998's pop music--and speaking the plain truth. Reminiscent in its scope of nothing so much as Aretha's early-'70s Spirit in the Dark and Young, Gifted and Black, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill also easily earns its late-'90s place next to Erykah Badu's Baduizm. Even more personal, if hardly any more political, than cohort Wyclef Jean's Carnival, Miseducation focuses equally on her life (especially the birth of her child) and social concerns about the present and future. Its often quiet surface, if anything, lends intensity. "Everything you drop is so tired," she scolds artistically dead-ended rappers on "Superstar"; if more artists shared her vision, occasional eccentricities and bottom-line talent, she wouldn't have to complain. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

I had heard all of the hype surrounding the album but didn't buy it until EX-FACTOR was released as a single - I was curious like most and wondered whether the album truly deserved all of the Grammies and attention but after one listen, my answer is a resounding YES! When an artists produces a disc that people from all walks of life, interests and music tastes can appreciate then they have done something special and that's what TMOLH did.
The commentary of the album touches on love, ill-fated love, the music industry and a bit of religion but at no time did I feel I was being preached to or told how to feel or think - she espoused her beliefs and offered a glimpse into her heart which in turn touched my heart on more than a few tracks. I also loved the school house interludes which seamlessly moved the tracks along - whereas some album interludes are intrusive and create bloat in albums, these worked with the tracks and served as semi-introductions.
I love this entire album but to this day, the tracks that really touch my heart are:
EX-FACTOR - heartbreakingly brilliant break up song; Lauryn's vocals are exquisite on this track
TO ZION - beautiful track expressing her love for her son and the personal decision to have him during the height of her young career
DOO WOP (THAT THING) - mixes great social commentary on male/female relationships over a great beat
WHEN IT HURTS SO BAD - moody tale about unrequited love, I loved the harps used in the musical production & the real pain in her voice
I USED TO LOVE HIM - loved the pairing of her & Mary J Blige's vocals, they sound beautiful together
NOTHING EVEN MATTERS - beautiful duet ballad with D'Angelo
THE MISEDUCATION OF LAURYN HILL - her voice sounds so beautiful on this track
It's never too late to add this classic to your collection - I'd highly recommend it!

Key to the success of this prime-time teen soap opera has been a mix of contemporary rock and pop that musically embroiders the show's increasingly complex mix of hope, fear, and youthful angst with often melodramatic flair. This third volume of songs from the successful series continues in that tradition while, as the title suggests, exploring a little wider artistic range. "Don't Wait" by Dashboard Confessional and the Honorary Title's "Stay Away" immediately anchor the set with a familiar tone of urgency, while star Tyler Hilton offers up another expected sensitive acoustic ballad in "You'll Ask for Me." But elsewhere, the collection admirably pushes the envelope via such tasty, eclectic morsels as the infectious pop of the Kooks' "Naïve," Gym Class Heroes turning "Good Vibrations" into a stripped-down shuffle, and the effusive hip-hop-pop of Lupe Fiasco's "I Gotcha." But it's still a collection centered largely on the contemplative, indie spirit embodied by the Wreckers' gorgeous "Lay Me Down," Lucero's emotive dirge "Tell Me What It Takes," and the Constantines' similarly focused "Soon Enough." --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

Perfect for the Road.......2007-06-14
Hands down La Rocca's "Non-Believer," The Weepies "World Spins Madly On," and Band of Horses' "Funeral" are the best tracks on the album. Those songs alone are worth buying the cd for.
Awesomeness.......2007-06-10
That's what I like about the OTH soundtracks. They're not filled with "what's now" hot in the music scene, but rather songs that can be listened to over and over, because you're not going to always hear them on the radio.
the perfect follow up,hope there'll be a fourth..........2007-04-12
Don't wait : way to obvious choice but great though. The perfect song to start the CD with. 4,5/5
stay away : not the best from the band, but after listening to it several times you get used to it. 4/5
naive : good choice, siuts very well with the show itself, but not so good song. 3/5
the funeral : one of the highlight from the CD,great choice!....5/5
heartbeats : just the same as naive, but a good song. 3.5/5
you'll ask me : not his best by far and I must say that I get a little tired of him.
i gotcha : not the usual OTH tune but really great choice, second highlight. 5/5
good vibrations : way too much Citizen Cope vibes for me,but an OK song. 4/5
lay me down : third highlight, love the band and Michelle Branch. 5/5
soon enough : beautiful song but unnoticed, too bad. 3/5
he lays in the rein : fourth highlight, such a beautiful and lyrical song. 5/5
tell me what it takes : the same as soon enough, plus the song's not so good as for the band which is supposed to be one of Luca's favorite...2.5/5
just be simple : could have been a highlight but way too obvious and passe choice. 4.5/5
world spins madly on : love the band ad the song, fifth highlight. 5/5
non-believer : the perfect choice which was to be made.the sound from the great episode, song to live and die by,reminds me so much of Peyton. The sixth and last but not least highligh fom the CD. 5/5
chloe dancer/crowns of thorns : not my favorite at all but Jason Shwartzman made such a moving speech telling us why he chose the song that we have to at least like it. 3.5/5
If you love the show and the previous soundtrack just buy it,if not,buy it cause you'll find something you love on it.

How do you put together a soundtrack for a comedy about witches--'90s style? Well, if she's young and her name is Sabrina, you compile an album of relentless teen pop and R&B hits. But if your witches are a little more mature (and, perhaps, suburban), as in Practical Magic, you use a different formula. And the brew found here is actually a good mix: Faith Hill gets as much play (one track) as Nick Drake and Joni Mitchell. Mitchell's "A Case of You" is simply great, and Bran Van 3000's "Everywhere" fits the folk-pop mold nicely, as does upstart Michelle Lewis's "Nowhere and Everywhere." The guys are the oddities here: Elvis Presley's "Always on My Mind" and Harry Nilsson's "Coconut" give this disc some fun quirks. --Jim YoungCustomer Reviews:

After immeasurable success in the U.S., Faith Hill finally comes to Europe, and There You'll Be is a sort of catch-up for the best bits we may have missed along the way (or, in other words, a greatest hits collection for the uninitiated). A dozen songs which map the path of the Georgia singer, it includes the massive hit for which she has come to be known over here--"There You'll Be," from the Pearl Harbor soundtrack--together with some pop anthems like "The Way You Love Me (Love to Infinity Mix)." However, the style she delivers most convincingly is that of her roots in country, with "Let Me Let Go", "Piece of My Heart," and "You Give Me Love" from the earlier albums being the clear highlights of this collection. --Gunther MatejkaAlbum Description

It's hard not to start feeling sentimental after hearing the loose collection of love ballads that comprise the Notting Hill soundtrack. The romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant is filled with the modern sounds of love--as sung by everyone from pop harmonizers (Boyzone, 98 Degrees) to classic soulsters (Bill Withers, Al Green). The Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'" adds a garage-rock edge, but if you're not up for slow-burning love tunes, this soundtrack probably isn't for you. Two guitar-based score tracks from composer Trevor Jones fill out Notting Hill and add nice instrumental touches to the disc. --Jason VerlindeCustomer Reviews:

The party line on most Windham Hill products seems to be that it's either the greatest stuff since wave machines, or that it all sounds alike. On a Starry Night, with its collection of world songs and reputable artists such as Flora Purim, Airto Moreira, the Turtle Island String Quartet, and others, does lean toward a seamlessly understated, homogeneous quality that is broken only occasionally by Bobby McFerrin's piece and a couple of others. That said, there can hardly be a more mellow or sonorous album of kid's music anywhere. Starry Night could calm a nursery with no nurses; why, it could even soothe the pained yelps at the dog pound--and turn a freeway full of bumper-to-bumper sour pusses into pussycats. Effective? "We exposed these animals [rats] in utero and then sixty days after birth to different types of auditory stimulation and then we ran them in a spatial maze. And sure enough, the animals that were exposed to the Mozart completed the maze faster and with fewer errors. And now what we're doing is we're removing their brains so we can slice them and see neuro-anatomically precisely what has changed as a function of this exposure. So it may be that this intense exposure to the music is a type of enrichment that has similar effects on the spatial areas of the hippocampus of the brain." --Dr. Frances Rauscher
