A Wonderful CD.......2007-05-13
ANOTHER winner!.......2006-07-11
Best C.D Ever!!!!.......2006-03-10
This is the best song ever writen!!!My Language Arts teacher loves poetry. She prints out the words to songs she likes. She says they'll teach us a lesson and that they are a lot like poems.Anyways, she prints out the words to paticular songs and passes them out to the class and tells us to follow along while she plays the song.Oneday she brought in "letters From War" and she almost cried.
I love this song!!!Way to go Mark Schultz!!! Also, thanks to my Language Arts teacher or I probally would have never found it. Best song ever!!! Buy it!!!!!
A Masterpiece.......2005-10-13
The music is pretty high-energy. The performances are great. The arrangements and mixing, by Brown Bannister, is terrific. It reminds me of the old masterpiece, A Tramp Shining, by Richard Harris/Jimmy Webb, with its fullness of sound.
But the star of the show is the words. Mark is a rarely gifted songwriter, who can bring out the meaning in ordinary life stories. He devotes himself to three main themes and their interdependency: relationship, identity, and the use of time.
The album starts out with the themes of relationship and identity, in You Are a child of mine. Mark writes that when he's “overcome with loneliness”, God's voice reassures him that he is dearly loved. Identity is found in one's relationship to God.
The second song, Everywhere, describes that relationship as being both in the very depths of our being and everywhere we go.
Letters from war is an amazingly powerful song, again about relationship, and about the power of prayer. A widow's son is captured in war. His letters to her end, but hers to him continue each night, for she is writing letters from her own war, as she fights for her son's life in prayer: “Bring him home!”, she entreats. If you have something you need to go to war for in prayer, this song will inspire you. SPOILER: This song gripped me at first, because for a brief moment it seems the son is lost.
Do you even know me anymore? - again about relationship, but this time that theme is mixed with the theme of our use of time. A man has set his own worldly goals, but has neglected his family to the point that he doesn't know them anymore. And then in an poignant turn, he discovers he no longer knows himself, and then finally despairs that God even knows him. This is powerful stuff.
Time that is left – Now the theme of use of time is front and center. How will we deal with things past, present, and future? “Will they say that we loved till our final breath?” We are given the key to how to respond in the oft-repeated refrain, which consists simply of the universal praise word, Hallelujah. If we devote ourselves to the Lord, our lives will work out.
Running just to catch myself – an amazingly creative, hectic song about life in the rat race. One of the funniest songs I've heard in a long time. Mark is spoofing the pressures this life brings us, and challenging us to live above them.
It's been a long time – about staying close to the Lord and not wasting our time on things that don't matter. This song had to grow on me a bit, but it is excellent. The arrangement, the instruments and background vocals, reminds me of some of Phil Specter's work with the Beatles.
He will carry me – along with Child and Letters, a contender for best song of the album. Though strong in most of the songs here, this one above the others brings out the use of dynamical contrast. Low, painful brooding is set against a triumphant declaration that whatever we go through the Lord will be there with us. Relationship again.
Just to know you – a challenge to live life to know Christ, just as He lived and gave His all to know us. Time and relationship again. “I want to finish strong”.
Closer To You – a song of dedication to the Lord. We find not only all our answers in Him, we find who we are.
Reprise – Time That Is Left – a rockin' jam on the earlier cut. At first I wondered why this was chosen to repeat, but then I saw that the album ends on a challenge to us. What will we do with the time that's left? We have a choice to make.
Few albums achieve the level of creativity and power of this one. The writing, the arrangements, the performances, the mixing, are all simply world-class. In the sea of mediocrity that contemporary music, even CCM, is, this album stands out. I don't think you will regret getting a copy. I can't tell you how many times I've listened to mine. Congrats to Mark and all for a work very well done.
Real and Uplifting.......2005-08-02

Had a couple of salad vegetables performed Sunday-school songs in our day the way they do here, we parents might have made it through the weekly churchgoing ritual without the regular reaming by our own moms and dads. Delivering the between-song dialogue and cartoon shenanigans that keep kids from drifting off are Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, who whoop it up from the first track with wah-wah guitar effects, loopy lyrical improv, fellow VeggieTales guest vocalists, and a smattering of big-band swing. A kids' choir provides the starch that saves Sunday morning from becoming a beta-carotene bomb. While Bob twists his tongue around mouthfuls like "the mighty messiah that manifests miracles" in "Down in My Heart," for instance, the kids keep pace for at-home singers, who'll follow suit. Similarly, the child crooners carry on without so much as a snicker as Sgt. Larry barks out "Gimme 20!" in "This is My Commandment" and chimes in with a wacky "No way!" during the "Don't let Satan blow it out" verse of "This Little Light of Mine." The originals "God's Way," "Love Your Neighbor," and "I Believe God Can" capture hummable, child-size chunks of morality, complementing traditionals like "He's Got the Whole World" and "Jesus Loves the Little Children." And once Joshua fights the battle of Jericho and we've washed up in a river of peace, this record swings into section two--the split-track rerun (without the veggie character commentary). Cue it up at the crack of dawn as a pre-service snooze-prevention device--ironically, in Bob and Larry's vitamin-rich hands, church songs become less boring broccoli and more crunchy Cheetos. --Tammy La GorceCustomer Reviews:

Children's discs, like cartoons, sometimes work on a couple of different levels, but those levels are usually predictable--the pop-culture reference that flies over a slack-jawed fourth grader's head while garnering a chuckle from her parent, for example, or the double-entendre that's decidedly singular in the eyes of a 6-year-old child. The Tragic Treasury, the companion disc to Daniel Handler's creepily addictive Lemony Snicket series of books, is in a whole different league: 11-year-olds and the adults who hover over them, waiting for their own chance to devour each title, will love its verisimilitude--songs like "Scream and Run Away" and "Smile! No One Cares How You Feel" couldn't have been concocted for anything else--and indie-rock types, be they 19 or 62, will love its drearily exceptional hipness. Whether you know your grim grottos from your vile villages and hostile hospitals (all Snicket titles) couldn't matter less: if artful gloom-leaning pop grabs you, this disc gives up the goods, and of a quality you won't find anywhere else besides a handful of less-inspired Gothic Archies releases. As most non-Snicketeers inclined to pick up The Tragic Treasury know, Stephen Merritt--he of the equally excellent Magnetic Fields--is responsible; a few accordion contributions from Handler himself aside, he alone is the merry Goth man. He also writes a mean lyric, and luckily for Snicket loyalists, they're included in liner notes here. --Tammy La GorceAlbum Description
This musical companion to bestselling novelist Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events is comically creepy fun for children of all ages. The Gothic Archies is a musical project of Stephin Merritt, the songwriter best known for his band the Magnetic Fields. The album, entitled The Tragic Treasury, features music originally recorded for the audiobooks of A Series of Unfortunate Events. The Tragic Treasury contains 13 songs corresponding to the 13 books in the series, with two additional bonus tracks also inspired by the series. All music is performed by the Gothic Archies, with Lemony Snicket accompanying on accordion. The Tragic Treasury is being released October 10, 2006, in conjunction with the final Lemony Snicket book, The End.Customer Reviews:

"Ice Cold Ice," in which Bob Mould rails against "barren lands and barren minds" and Grant Hart falls in on the supercatchy chorus, exemplifies the Hüsker Dü career development that peaks on this final album. Without sacrificing the emotional intensity of earlier albums, the Minneapolis trio beefs up the guitar-based melodies and sneaks in pop songcraft in lieu of the old fast-and-loud hardcore style. On this 1987 double album, as usual, guitarist Mould supplies the personal songs ("Standing in the Rain"), while drummer Hart remains more broadly political ("Tell You Why Tomorrow"). --Steve KnopperCustomer Reviews:

"Familiar places that we turned into gardens".......2006-04-04
"These Important Years" (Mould) 3:49: An excellent track to begin the album. Great rocker.
"Charity, Chastity, Prudence, and Hope" (Hart) 3:11: Grant Hart kept getting better and better as a songwriter and here he offers up some amazing rockers that even have a slight country rock sound. This track just flies and never lets up. The guitar solo is yeehaw good!
"Standing in the Rain" (Mould) 3:41: One of Mould's more popular tracks but it is not one of my favorites. It's good, of course, but seems a bit mundane.
"Back From Somewhere" (Hart) 2:16: Another country-style, yeehaw rocker by Grant Hart. I like Hart's vocals on this one (yeehaw style again).
"Ice Cold Ice" (Mould) 4:23: One of my favorite Mould tracks here. It begins with menacing guitar and then rocks. I wish Hart's backing vocals were clearer as I think it would have made the song even better. It sounds great on the live album The Living End.
"You're a Soldier" (Hart) 3:03: This song is just OK. I can actually take it or leave it. Anti-war songs are so prevalent and this one isn't very special. I don't like the backing vocals and the line "knocking over everything that's standing in your way. Can you tell me just how many did you kill today" line sounds like another song, but I can't put my finger on which song that is.
"Could You Be the One?" (Mould) 2:32: This is probably the most recognizable song from this album. They made a music video for it. I never thought I liked it that much but I find myself humming this track a lot, so it must be pretty addictive.
"Too Much Spice" (Hart) 2:57: Another yeehaw rocker by Hart. I love this stuff! I like the lyrics and Hart's vocals are crisp and clear and not barely audible like on some of his tracks. Definitely a sing-along-to song. And a rockin' guitar solo, too.
"Friend, You've Got to Fall" (Mould) 3:20: Catchy track. Up there with "Ice Cold Ice" and "Up in the Air" as my favorite Mould track on this album. Great guitar as always.
"Visionary" (Mould) 2:30: This track is OK, but is not a memorable as most of the others here. I don't care for the chorus that much.
"She Floated Away" (Hart) 3:32: A nice change-of-pace. It has a hard, pulsating beat between the verses, but at the verses and chorus it has a transporting almost gospel-like quality (well, not as gospel as "She Can See the Angels" off Hart's solo album Intolerance). Interesting track.
"Bed of Nails" (Mould) 4:44: Rough Mould rocker that bites like a rusty saw. The "Please don't drive your nails into this heart of mine" line always bugged me as it seems very contrived.
"Tell You Why Tomorrow" (Hart) 2:42: A track that builds with intensity and also has a groovy bass line.
"It's Not Peculiar" (Mould) 4:06: Starts out with this pulsating riff which if OK but when Mould actually sings to this riff "It's not peculiar, there's nothing to devise at all-a-a-a-a-a-a-all right." Yuck. The verses leading up to it are actually pretty good, and Hart's higher backing vocals help it a little but it just bugs me.
"Actual Condition" (Hart) 1:50: Another Hart rocker, but my least favorite. This one is a bit too yeehaw for my tastes.
"No Reservations" (Mould) 3:40: Nice, slower-paced track.
"Turn It Around" (Mould) 4:32: This song is the only one on this track that I really do not like. It is almost embarrassing to listen to. I'm surprised Mould wrote it. It is just so contrived, silly, and mundane. I like the line "But the biggest thing to me is making this thing work for life." That really hits it home but most of the other lyrics and the musical aspect of the song I can definitely leave. Oh well, one ringer out of 20 is not bad.
"She's a Woman (And Now He is a Man)" (Hart) 3:19: I LOVE THIS SONG!! It may be my all-time favorite Grant Hart track! Great lyrics, great vocals, rocks, never lets up! I can't praise it enough!
"Up in the Air" (Mould) 3:03: Mould turns it around (so to speak) with this track. Excellent, catchy track. The chorus with the backing vocals is superb.
"You Can Live at Home" (Hart) 5:25: Appropriate ending to an incredible double-album. A long rocker that sounds like everyone is involved in the vocals and fades out. The bass really drives this one.
Best album by someone I had never heard of........2006-01-14

Sorry, but I can't review this. .......2007-01-09
I had to put a star rating on this review or the Amazon server wouldn't let me post. Please ignore it. I have no idea how to rate it.
Awesome CD/DVD!.......2006-12-09
A number of his songs have really hit home with me. "Closer To You" really hit me when my cousin passed away after a twelve year fight with cancer. It hit me hard enough that I typed the lyrics as I listened to the song, printed them out, and posted them at my cousin's grave site. I heard "Letters From War" a month before my brother was scheduled to leave for Iraq (He made it home safe by the way), so the first time, it was salt in an open wound; but the more I listened to it, the more I liked it, because I felt like God was saying: "My son, you've got to trust Me. I will look after your brother, so don't worry."
Mark Schultz truly has a Christian background, and he demonstrates his love and appreciation for Christ, as well as for everyone in his life who helped to support him. [...] should give customers the option to give 100 stars, because a 5 star rating does not even come close to giving him his due credit. Mark Schultz is AWESOME!
AWESOME.......2006-09-12
I have LOVED his music ever since he was introduced with the song 'I am the Way' on the Wow 2001 CD.
