Leave it to Steve Earle to unleash one of the most off-the-wall odds 'n' sods collections ever; it's also, by the way, one of the most satisfying. Except for two plucky instrumentals originally meant for Transcendental Blues, there are no outtakes here, just a batch of movie-soundtrack songs, demos, live takes, and previously unreleased tracks. They include the inspired, revelatory "Me and the Eagle" (from The Horse Whisperer); the credible white-boy reggae "Johnny Too Bad" with the V-Roys; a churning remake of Nirvana's "Breed"; a storming, camp-free duet with Sheryl Crow on the Chambers Brothers' psychedelic period piece "Time Has Come Today"; and a demo of "Ellis Unit One" with the Fairfield Four that sounds like a field recording made inside the prison walls. It all hangs together to rank this among Earle's finest albums. --John Morthland

4 out of 5 stars Jewels from the vault.......2006-04-05

4 out of 5 stars WEIRD, DIVERSE AND FASCINATING.......2006-03-18

Whew, talk about eclectic. Steve Earle sings with one the most potent southern accents known to mankind, but he puts his voice to all kinds of interesting use on Sidetracks, including reggae, grunge-punk, an Irish jig, psychedelic pop and (the least surprising, I suppose) bluegrass. All of it's good, too. Sidetracks compiles odds and ends that were made for various, non-album projects - movie soundtracks, e.p.'s, etc. that never occupied a space in his `official' catalog. Now they do, and the most amazing about this collection is the degree of continuity that is derived from such diversity.
"Some Dreams," "Open the Window" and "Me and the Eagle" open the album. All are written by Earle, and they set the tone for what might be much like any of Steve Earle's other great records, except for the sudden shift in styles that then takes place. From the `toasting' version of "Johnny Too Bad"(an outlaw song that fits Earle's persona like a glove) through a surprisingly vital version of Kurt Cobain's "Breed", the extent of Earle's talent and interests transcend any attempt at pigeonholing him as a country artist, alternative or otherwise.
His choice of covers spell out his abilities in ways that his songwriting does not. He duets with Sheryl Crow on "Time Has Come Today", the 60's soul-rocker made famous by the Chambers Brothers, and reinvests it with a rocking energy that updates, then eclipses, the original. Once Steve Earle takes hold of a song, it becomes his. Little Feat's "Willin'" has been covered so often that I could easily live without it these days, but Earle's version is the first that brings something new (and believable) to the song since Lowell George first recorded it in the early `70s. All in all, Sidetracks pulls itself together much better than otherwise might have been expected from such eclecticism. This'd make a cool choice for the CD scrambler. A- Tom

4 out of 5 stars And another thing.......2005-10-12

Sort of a wrap-up of the period ending with Transcendental Blues; various songs done for non-album projects and such. Some fair to good typical Steve Earle songs, but pushed to four star status by Johnny Too Bad, Breed, and Time Has Come Today.

4 out of 5 stars This is a catchy album........2003-06-14

There are a lot of good tunes on this album. I think that "Ellis Unit One" is a classic. "Creepy Jackelope Eye" just keeps growing on me, and "My Uncle" is a well done protest song with a sense of humor. The chorus on "Willin' just keeps coming back to me. There is a little bit of a lot of different things to like on this album. I think that I like this album most because almost all the songs are quality songs that are well done, and STeve Earle's versions are pretty good renditions of some great songs.

5 out of 5 stars Finally... a B-sides album that skips the filler!.......2003-04-19

Overshadowed by the controversy that surrounded Steve's "Jerusalem" album last year, this unassuming CD is a hidden gem. Essentially, it's a hodgepodge collection of B-sides and other assorted songs from the vault. But unlike most other albums of this kind, it's listenable from start to finish.

What the album lacks in cohesiveness, it makes up for in musicianship and enthusiasm. The CD blasts off with "Some Dreams," a defiant, rollicking country rocker that Steve wrote for the Dennis Quaid film, "The Rookie." In the song, Steve slyly reminds us that "some dreams don't ever come true... but some dreams do." And "Dominick St." and "Sara's Angel" are two joyous bluegrass instrumentals from the "Transcendental Blues" sessions.

Steve has a lot of fun with an eclectic array of covers, too. He injects a little twang and a lot of attitude in his cover of Nirvana's "Breed." Little Feat's "Willin'" is transformed into a easygoing bluegrass number. And Steve's emotional rendering of the Bob Dylan classic, "My Back Pages," closes the album gracefully.

About the only track that fails on any level is "Time Has Come Today," his duet with Sheryl Crow. The song itself is pretty good... a little more polished than usual for Steve, but enjoyable nonetheless. But the song inexplicably splices 60s-era speeches from Abbie Hoffman and others in the middle of verses that adds nothing to the song.

Overall, I highly recommend this collection to Steve's fans. Neophytes may be better served with other albums including "Transcendental Blues", "I Feel Alright" and "Guitar Town". Even so, fans and nonfans alike will have a lot of fun listening to this one. Enjoy!

This is much more than a collection of terrific jazz from heavyweights like Duke Ellington with Max Roach & Charles Mingus, Eddie Gale, Herbie Hancock, Horace Parlan, Lou Donaldson and more. First of all the cover artwork is by the minimalist painter Barnett Newman. Secondly, the 11 tracks were chosen by Tom Barman, the lead singer of the Belgian band dEUS. And last but not least the music is interspersed with painters talking about art. The painters are Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Kenneth Noland, Barnett Newman, Willem DeKooning, Adrian Piper and critic Clement Greenberg. This is volume 7 in the ace series from Blue Note Belgium. A very creative & unique release for fans of serious art & music. 2006.
