This live recording presents retro-country singer-songwriter Dale Watson in his ideal element: a rowdy little honky-tonk, albeit one in England rather than Texas. Watson performs his fine originals (such as the tender "You Are My Friend") as well as classic country covers by Merle Haggard, Webb Pierce, Wynn Stewart, Ray Price, and Johnny Cash, in a boozy croon. Meanwhile, his Lonestars lay down a relaxed groove that cranks the twang. Predictably, nearly a quarter of the night's set list is devoted to praising country music's past ("Legends") or, more often, pummeling its present ("Country My Ass," "Nashville Rash," "Real Country Song"). Some listeners may find this a little off-putting, but the crowd at London's Borderline roars and sings its approval--the album was originally titled
Preachin' to the Choir--as Watson repeatedly builds then topples his favorite straw man. And no wonder: Watson may be a musical reactionary, but he still rocks--oops, make that

Customer Reviews:
Country's is Back!.......2007-02-02
I only recently discovered Dale Watson when he played locally. What a pleasure to know there is still someone out there who is performing real country music! The music coming from Nashville these days just isn't my cup of tea any more. I quit listening to "country" stations about ten years ago, but my love for the sound of traditional country never died. When I discovered Dale Watson, I came alive again. This is my favorite of all his albums....I bought one of everything he had at the show. Every fan of traditional country needs to hear three songs: "C-M-A," "Nashville Rash," and "Mr. Deejay Please Play a Real Country Song." The good stuff is not coming from Nashville any more, it's coming from the Lonestar State!
(real) country fan.......2005-02-02
this is my favorite cd of dales.this is not for tim mcgraw or kenny chessney fans.this is too country for those people.all of dales cds are great.my second favorite is "i hate these songs".i hope this review can help more people discover how awsome dale is.
Solid, kickass country music!.......2002-09-06
I once had the good fortune to see Dale Watson play a show in Glasgow, Scotland, and the intensity and devotion of that UK crowd is ably reflected in this concert album, where the London fans hoot, holler and sing along to a brace of oldies and a slew of new originals. This is Watson in fine form, stripped down and honkytonk as all hell. He takes advantage of the concert album tradition to get a little dirty and cuss some, but mostly this is about Dale and his high-test ... band, who don't mess around for even a note or two. Authenticity is Watson's watchword: he opens the set up with his hick music anthem, "A Real Country Song," reprises his version of the Jimmie Rodgers classic "In The Jailhouse Now" (which was also a highlight of a recent Webb Pierce tribute album), and thumbs his nose at Nashville with "Country My Ass..." He might not be subtle, but he sure is good. You can't hear solid country playing like this anywhere else but on a Dale Watson album. Highly recommended!
"Explicitly Hardcore Country Music.".......2002-08-17
That's how Dale describes his own music. He further goes on to state, "The music in this show contains lyrics about honky tonks, truck driving men, drink', cheatin', and other topics considered to be too provocative for today's candy-... Country Music." He's right. This is REAL country music. This is the way country music is supposed to sound. Dale Watson isn't retro, he's not a throwback -- he's simply carrying on the fiery torch of pure country music as it was carried by Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Merle Haggard. Dale is, of course, far too country for "country" radio; his first single release from this album, "Country My @$$," has been unilaterally turned down by them (wonder why?). But Dale is more than just a banner for the survival of real country music -- Dale is a powerhouse of talent, a thundering voice, a phenominal writer, and a heck of a great guitar player. His small frame packs country music skill so gigantic it absolutely dwarfs the "big names" doing their fireworks at arena shows, selling their teenybopper bubblegum with their pecks and abs. Dale doesn't need fireworks -- he entertains with TALENT. This album is a marvelous recording of two live nights in London (where, sadly, he's FAR more popular than he is here in the States). If you love real country music, buy this. You'll order all the rest of his albums before the final track finishes spinning.
Domestic issue of barbwire-sharp UK live set.......2002-07-26
Recorded live in London in 2000, and originally released in Europe as a double CD, Audium's single disc is remastered from the original 24-track tapes, providing a half-dozen titles not present on the earlier issue. Particularly noticeable are the addition of "A Real Country Song" and "Nashville Rash," adding extra gravitas to the show's critique of mainstream country music.
Having been recorded two years ago, these tracks presents a snapshot of Watson before the death of his finacèe, his subsequent depression, and the musical exposition of his "Every Song I Write For You" CD. Recent interviews find Watson letting go of the stridency and anger that dominated songs like "Country My Ass" (as well as some of the stage patter), suggesting that explicit railing at the music industry may not be Watson's future.
The nineteen selections (nearly 70 minutes) include new titles, highlights from Watson's catalog, and cornerstone covers of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash, Wynn Stewart and Jimmie Rodgers (by way of Webb Pierce). Welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd, Watson and the band are in fine form as they move from Ray Price's jazzy steel guitar showcase, "Bright Lights and Blonde Haired Women" to the loping tempo of "Can't Be Satisfied" and two-step rhythms of "Turn Off the Jukebox" and "Break Your Own Heart."
The barbwire criticisms of contemporary country are certainly entertaining, and the homages to influences are heartfelt, but it's Watson's own twangy, Texas-bred songs that drive his point all the way home.

Customer Reviews:
Worth the price, though high, for Space Truckin alone plus.........2004-02-19
This reissue, from Japan, of the Classic 1974 Deep Purple Mark III release is pricey, no doubt, but well worth it for Space Truckin', previously unheard. The interpolation of both "High Ball Shooter" and "Child In Time", though very briefly for both, proves the band keeps in touch with their past. The band rocks, and although purists would contend that the truly "classic" versions are from Machine Head and Made In Japan (with Ian Gillan, Mark II lineup, which they are) the combination of Hughes and Coverdale does a fine job covering the song; along with Blackmore's guitar, Lord's organ, and Paice's drums. It provides a nice "showcase" for all of the band. As well as the other tracks, the inclusion of this previously unheard of (outside of Japan, probably) track is absolute genius. For the "true" Deep Purple fan, no version of "Space Truckin'", or any of the other classic Purple hits, is "too long". It's a flat out, straight ahead, "jam" for the most part. The only, and I mean the only, criticism I have is that the booklet inside the double cd, gatefold, cover and packaging, is that there wasn't an "English" translation of the notes in the booklet. The only parts I could "make out" were the names "Deep Purple"; Elf, Rainbow, and the song titles. Thank God the lyrics were in English. Other than that, it's worth the price. [As a point of reference for newer Deep Purple fans, High Ball Shooter is found in the original on the Stormbringer release and Child In Time, of course, is on In Rock, Made In Japan, and other releases]. Deep Purple will, along with Black Sabbath, and others of the times, forever freakin' rock!. [Got to keep it "polite" you know, or they won't publish it.]
space trucking as a bonus track.......2003-09-04
I have bought another japanese cd version in 1990 without space trucking on the bonus track. This double cd set is including long 30 minutes track "Space trucking". The other songs remain the same. Mark III line up with Coverdale and Hughes was on the roar at that time. Need I say more?

A 31-year-old treasure is unearthed.......2006-12-12
This CD is a real treasure for jazz vocal enthusiasts, especially fans of Annie Ross. Harkit Records has issued 76 minutes from Ross's live 1965 performances at Annie's Room in London. Like many older recordings, especially those done outside of a studio, this won't win a prize for superb audio fidelity. But it does present standards like "Jumpin' at the Woodside," "Love for Sale," "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Soon It's Gonna Rain" and "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home" at least as well as they'd sound if you were catching her act in a busy nightclub. Finding this much new Ross material from a period of her career when her voice was at its best is good news for all jazz fans. I've played it a dozen or more times in the last three months.

Customer Reviews:
Actually 2 stars for the Fall newbie...you could do better........2004-11-10
In one sentence: If you don't like this record at all then you probably won't like any 1978-1983 Fall. Realistically though, you as a reader deserve more. To be honest, this release has terrible sound quality (it started out worse than on this disc) and the band is off key, constantly screw up, and MES is constantly steamrolling over the lyrics. When this came out, MES wodered why a record label would want to record such a terrible night. Maybe you should save your money and buy "Totale's Turns" for an awesome early fall live album or the albums these songs came from like Dragnet, Live at the Witch Trials, Grotesque, and Slates throught the expanded editions. That's the end of the review, really. For a wandering rant, read on. Just got this today on my way to Arabic. This is my astounding fifteenth Fall release. At this point as a fan I have bought 2 comps (Time Enough at Last and It's the New Thing! The Step Forward Years) which every fall fan does before they find the official fall website at visi. com slash the fall and look up the discography. That'll tell you how to find the best version of all 26+ essential albums. But back to this one. I can't imagine that anyone cares how it was recorded so I won't tell you. If you're a real fall fan, you'll know why you need this, so here's it for those who aren't. This and Totale's turns take a very angular and course (soundwise) band and make them slightly more lighthearted. Personally I would start you off with the soon to be out of print "Slates/A Part of America Therein, 1981" because it combines a stellar early EP (or 10") with a great live LP (12") for the same cost as a regular album. This double album will be broken in 2 later this year, so the smart person will save up and get both. As a rule, for all Fall albums from 1978-1985, it's better to wait a little while for the expanded releases that are now out through 1981 (as of December, 2004) That means for the new fan, start at the beginning (if you like that) and their 16ish 1990-2004 albums (Are You Are Missing Winner, Cerebral Caustic, Code Selfish, Extricate, Infotainment Scan, Levitate, Light User Syndrome, Marshall Suite, Middle Class Revolt, Pander! Panda! Panzer!, 2G+2, The Post-Nearly Man, The Real New Fall LP (US Version), Shift-Work, The Unutterable, and finally Twenty-Seven Points) and "This Nation's Saving Grace"/"The Wonderful and Frightening World of The Fall" (head-to-head for best Fall album, and you apparently have to pick one of the two) and wait for their 1980's Late-classic/Brix-Era Fall since by the time you've gone through all that the Expanded Edition series will be through 1987 or so. But all that is useful Fall data to be squirreled away with your "Confusion is..."/"Chronic Town"/? musical knowledge. This is a good live album from a band that was always better live, but keep in mind that there is no one best place to start with a band. I like the say that what if you could only have one shot to really appreciate a band. You can only choose one album from their massive catalog. How should you choose? I usually go with their first album because I like it raw. You might want to go with the trendiest release ("Daydream Nation"/"Loveless"/"Spiderland" etc.) or the release that sounds like it would appeal to you most (The Queers' "A Day Late and a Dollar Short" is raw, crude, anti-pc, and more fun than their more polished LPs and I like records dirty) or whatever. The next era 1984-1990 is the Brix Era; if you buy any official album (ie, not a comp) and you don't like it at all, then you probably won't like that era much. 1990-present is a mixed bag. MES is on his own, but he's super-old and bitter. There are a ton of 1990's albums available for 2-7 dollars used here, so you might want to start with those. The era that this here reviewed album is from is generally the most constant (album contentwise) that the Fall ever had, so you might be better off starting with an album not dissimilar to this one. If you end up loving the fall, you already have the best possible version ever of this release. That's a start. Thank you for reading, I love you all.
