The aim was to do for country what Saturday Night Fever did for disco. The result was that bars from Kona to Kalamazoo suddenly had mechanical bulls, and slickers walking around in cowboy hats. You might also pinpoint this as the moment in time when "country" music suddenly went cosmopolitan, paving the way for Garth Brooks. Johnny Lee's "Lookin' for Love" was one of the decade's biggest singles, and this album briefly made a star of Mickey Gilley (whose Texas club provided a home for that alpha bull). Fans of Bob Seger, Jimmy Buffet, the Eagles, Dan Fogelberg, and Bonnie Raitt may want this collection for the tunes they lack elsewhere. And it sure recalls an era. But please don't call it "country." --Bill Holdship

3 out of 5 stars Where were the good songs?.......2007-05-21

I love this movie, and I like the songs on this soundtrack, but, there are some songs that were in the movie that realy need to be on the soundtrack, but, they, for some reason left them out. Such as the intro song, "Texas", by Charley Danials. But, overall, it is a good album.

5 out of 5 stars you made my day........2007-05-14

I have the music on 8track but, haven't been able to play it for years, no 8 track player. Now the music is back. Good customer service.

5 out of 5 stars Very Very Good.......2007-02-12

I'm not a country music fan in the least. But I saw this movie at least 3 times and it was superb. I thoroughly enjoyed the music. There are several good artists on this soundtrack like Dan Fogelbert, Bob Seger, Anne Murray, The Eagles, Johnny Lee. Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers and a few others. Every song on this ST is excellent. Even if you're not a country music fan like myself, this is one good CD to have in your collection of movie soundtracks.

The gravel-and-grits voice of Kenny Rogers ultimately came to define the "Urban Cowboy" era of pop excess, even as the earlier "Lucille" and "The Gambler" were some of the most galvanizing story songs in country music's history. Looking back at this body of hits, it's easy to poke fun at the treacley "You Decorated My Life" or wince at the cheesy string arrangements on "Through the Years." It's also natural to wish Rogers had never heard of Sheena Easton, his misguided duet partner on "We've Got Tonight," and recorded more with the soulful, sad Dottie West ("Every Time Two Fools Collide") and the randy Dolly Parton ("Islands in the Stream"). (A bonus track, "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer," pairs him with old pal Kim Carnes.) As the years went by, Rogers got fatter, lazier, and more content to make crappy TV movies and wallow in the flaccid sentimentality of adult contemporary pop ("Buy Me a Rose"). He also got smug--the worst of sins for a man in his business. But behind the microphone, he always knew how to make even the hoariest of lyrics resonate with feeling. And at his peak, he was the perfect male country superstar, equal parts swagger and sweet, sweet promise. --Alanna Nash

If you're completing your music collection and haven't a Kenny Rogers CD, get this one. All hits ranging from beginning to now.

4 out of 5 stars Great memories and more..........2007-02-18

If you are a Kenny Rogers fan, this one won't disappoint. All his most popular hits and some great duets, everything you're looking for. The only downside (if there is one) is there were a few songs squeezed in that would probably not be considered among his greatest hits, but are still good music to listen to.

2 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE.......2007-01-21

I had the old 20 greatest hits (1994) cd but it seemed to me that the volume was recorded very low during mastering so i figured that this newly mastered one would be ideal. NOT. The first five tracks are the 'KENNY ROGERS AND THE FIRST EDITION" versions. If i wanted him and that horrible band he seems to can't let go of, I would have bought that one instead. So you do not get the better ruby don't take your love to town version. You get the old "kingston trio" one instead. If you liked the original songs in their original form you'll be dissapointed as some of the old great songs you loved are altered and changed up a bit. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME AGAIN WHY THEY FEEL THE NEED TO HAVE TO CHANGE OR ALTER GREATEST HITS PACKAGES. If i had known they were altered and quite horribly i would not have bought this. I would have stuck with the older compilation as it is the better one.

5 out of 5 stars Kenny Rodgers .......2007-01-15

Since seeing Kenny in Concert in Nottingham England in 2006 - I have been searching for an album that contained 1 song, that he sang at the concert. I had never heard the song before but apparently it was an old one, so I searched the shops and the net and found it on this album. The song is The Rose, which is on repeat on the stereo...

The whole album is fantastic and has been constantly played.

Marie Lincoln England.

Like most "best of" collections, this one contains both hits and misses. But we listened to it twice as soon as we got it, sang along both times, and enjoyed it immensely. Well worth buying!

One of the most inspired cobbled-together-from-a-stack-of-records soundtrack albums since Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski matches the goofily ramshackle spirit of the Dude, the hero of its celluloid companion. While offering Bob Dylan's luv-addled "Man in Me" together with the Gipsy Kings' redefinitive "Hotel California" and the psychedelic-era Kenny Rogers nugget "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)," Lebowski also gives longer play to some cuts barely sampled in the film, including Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings." Whether taken as a Coen brothers mix tape, a one-album CD carousel, or an apropos souvenir of one wiggy flick, this is a smart, eclectic buy. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars terrific!!.......2007-06-30

this is a fantastic album, if you like ecclectic music, that is. easily one of my favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad... but missing something........2007-04-17

This cd definitely has some good points. A great song by Dylan from the opening credits and my favourite, "Dead Flowers" done by Townes Van Zandt. But tremendously written by Jagger and Richards. Funny how my faves are from the start and end of the film. Between these two songs and a rousing "Hotel California" by the Gypsy Kings, I'm happy enough, but oddly, no Creedance. What am I gonna listen to while reaching for that joint I dropped in my lap in the car?

3 out of 5 stars 8-miles high track... better in movie........2007-03-19

The song that goes with the Treehorn dream sequence in the film (Kenny Rodgers et al "Tripped on a Cloud/ 8-miles high") was better in the movie, as the version on the cd is a poor original edit, with ackward reverses (and I like reverses, when not halfway through a measure...- for example, the reverse that opens it up is fine, the one three quarters through or so, you see, is not.), half measures chopping up the rhythm and in general either hastily done or naively... I've toyed with the idea of re-editing it myself in a track editor, but I'll just delete it from my player, because I'm lazy. The other tracks are good, but with a few odd ones like the feminist chant song- play this at your next Halloween party/[...]. I have loads of creedence, so not missing that. the Gypsy Kings' "Hotel California" is the best track, much better after first listen as anyone who has watched Lebowski more than a few times will be surprised by the new verses at first. "The Man in Me", if you don't already have it, isn't exactly representative of Dylan's work in large, but is a nice ditty. The Mancini song is filler. Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings" rocks, and I'm glad it was included despite being minutely used in the film. Anyway, it's a good cd all in all, but only for "Hotel California", and "My Mood Swings"... otherwise the Kenny Rodgers' song is bad, should have been re-edited... Probably the reason it was obscure to begin with... The Man in Me is widely available. My advice... wait and find Gypsy Kings elsewhere. Same for Costello and Dylan. Not the best playing mix.

4 out of 5 stars what the f*ck?!.......2007-03-06

No Tumblin' Tumbleweeds. That's a bummer, man, uh, you've got to have Tumbleweeds in there, the film f*cking OPENS with it, man, and it's in there again later with the Stranger. This is a f*ckin travesty. F*ck it. I'm goin bowling.

5 out of 5 stars camd908.......2007-01-05

The Dude is the man for our times. John Goodman makes Walter the crazed Vietman vet a classic movie side kick. And what can you say about Donny except he loved to surf. Happy Trails.

When my husband deploys, I feel alone, scared and yes worried.. As a military wife you usually aren't allowed to admit that.. :) This cd is amazing... I love it and it makes him being gone a lot easier.. I don't care what anyone says... We are in the right fight.. at the right time with the right President. I don't like him being gone.. But its worth it.. This CD makes me feel patriotic.. it tugs at my heartstrings.. makes me smile.. I can imagine driving with Private Andrew Malone.. I can feel proud to be an American... I can cry over "I'm already there.." All the songs make me smile... So yes.. worth every penny and more!!!

1 out of 5 stars Nashville hacks singing for faux-patriotism.......2005-12-23

Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Lonestar, Martina McBride, Montgomery Gentry, Aaron Tippin, Lee Greenwood, Neal McCoy, Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis, Phil Vassar, The Warren Brothers, Dusty Drake, Hank Williams Jr., Alabama, The Charlie Daniels Band, David Ball, and Blackhawk.

What do these artists have in common? Cutting edge musical geniuses? Gifted songwriters able to speak to a wide range of audiences? Innovators in their genre?

Err, no.

Actually what they all have in common is that they all appear on this package, created to commercially exploit the war on terrorism, one which contains songs like Where The Stars And Stripes And The Eagle Fly, This Ain't No Rag, It's A Flag, and Back Where I Come From. In other words, maudlin, xenophobic, cliche filled, black/white dichotomous sentiments, and the lack of any attempt at rational or questioning political analysis, all set to fiddles and pedal steel guitars, and to be marketed and sold at Wal-Mart. I should add that I am not against patriotism, when it is intelligent and well informed; this, however, is dumb, reactionary faux-patriotism. Nothing is more so than the song God Bless the USA. As an American who loves his country, I can say that this song, with its syrupy sound and its naive lyrics, does not speak for me.

I listened to a bit of this schlock on a plane ride a while back just to see how much of it I could take. The answer was - not very much. What little I could take made me want to drink, and heavily.

Some of these performers, specifically Brooks and Dunn, Randy Travis, Charlie Daniels, and perhaps Kenny Chesney and even (I hate to admit) Toby Keith are actually fairly talented; others, like former lounge singer Lee Greenwood, Alabama, Montgomery Gentry, etc, are 3rd rate musical hacks.

Ultimately, listening to this nonsense, I'm reminded that some of the greats of the genre, like Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, George Jones, and Willie Nelson were neither knee-jerk
reactionaries nor apologists for a ruling political party. Then again, Dusty Drake, Montgomery Gentry, and Blackhawk are no Johnny Cashes. Just Nashville hacks, soon to be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2005-08-21

It is a great CD. If you like country music, this is a great buy. Not all the songs are about America, but make you feel good and proud of where you come from.

NOTE: Most of the bad reviews below have to more with politics than music. These folks probably have never listened to all the songs let alone actually buying the CD.

4 out of 5 stars To to a kids review.......2005-07-31

"would like to say that this is a great cd and I love it when people write reviews like the one written on Dec. 21, 2004 titled (One of the worst cds ever). People like you make me sick, first you don't use your real name (like your a terrorist wearing a hood), next you play it off like a kid wrote that review, very cowardly. "

I'll tell you I'm a kid (age 16) and some don't want to use their real name because this is the internet, not real life. If you knew my name or the original reviewer's real name, would that make any difference? Anywa, you say since a reviewer doesn't use their real name, they are a terrorist? Very intelligent.

"If your home is destroyed by someone, you are not going to look for the people or person involved. No you are going to the proper authorities and they will handle it.

That is what happened here. We were attacked and the proper authorities are handling the situation."

We were not attacked by Iraq and the proper authorities are not handling the situation. We attacked Afghanistan, but Iraq has nothing to do with this.

"Look I am all for freedom for imagrant's but they took it to far with the attacks. Living in our country, working here, becoming friendly with the neighborhoods and gaining the trust of everyone around just to destroy part of the country you love (so you say) is just something that cannot be tolerated. At least we had the guts to tell them we were coming. You should be thankful that you have a country who is willing to protect you and your family. "

So you think it's immigrants fault that we were attacked? And you call yourself an American? You should be blind to race and country of origin, we are all Americans here. The country of Afghanistan attacked us and we went after them, that has nothing to do with immigrants.

"Right after 9/11 happened EVERYONE was togther as a whole to make sure the people behind this act of cowardly violence (kind of like the way you wrote your rewiew) and any kind of terroristic threats on U.S.A. would never happen again. But I guess for some of you people that was just like hopping on the band wagon for a short period of time."

It was not cowardly violence. In a war you strive to kill the most enemies you can. I would only Hope the US would strive to kill or detain as many terrorists as they can just as their target was civilians. Whatever you say, suicide bombings are not cowardly, they are actually pretty effective. Find me a US citizen willing to fly a plane into a building full of terrorists to kill our enemies.

"It's not a matter of what song's are good to listen to and what songs aren't. It's about a bunch of people who support the country (they love) so they can feel safe to go shopping, go to work or just go for a walk and not have to worry about some idiot flying a couple of planes into some building's or into the ground and never see their loved ones or the light of day ever again."

Ah, back to the actual review of the CD, which you have made a minor detail. I don't care about what these singers support, I care about their music. I care about what politicians support, and how singers sing. I happen to like many of the songs on the CD, but I didn't buy it because I own many of the songs already.

"How can you say you love something if you are going to let it get hurt and not try to justify the situation. I feel sorry for the people in your life."

Well more people are in car crashes every year than were in the WTC during 9/11, so you should be pushing for safety in cars. How can you say you love something if you are going to let it get hurt and not try to justify the situation? Of course you are a very effective tool of the terrorists, the typical American scared out of his pants when a building goes down, scared to shop, when you are in more danger driving your car. We have killed over 10 times the ammount of CIVILIANS in Iraq (nothing to do with 9/11) than the 9/11 attacks killed. Of course I'm sure they aren't people to you.

But back to the CD, I am really thinking about buying it mainly just for "Hey Mr. President" and I'm dissapointed they didn't put it on another CD, I love the song and the Warren Brothers.

Most of the songs are really great, although "God Bless The USA" was overplayed and I used to love it, but now I'm just tired of it. All of these songs are great, although some don't even seem to be patriotic. But that doesn't matter to me, because great music is great music, which is worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars A Message For A Kid's Rewiew Comment.......2005-03-10

I would like to say that this is a great cd and I love it when people write reviews like the one written on Dec. 21, 2004 titled (One of the worst cds ever). People like you make me sick, first you don't use your real name (like your a terrorist wearing a hood), next you play it off like a kid wrote that review, very cowardly.

If your home is destroyed by someone, you are not going to look for the people or person involved. No you are going to the proper authorities and they will handle it.

That is what happened here. We were attacked and the proper authorities are handling the situation.

Look I am all for freedom for imagrant's but they took it to far with the attacks.

Right after 9/11 happened EVERYONE was togther as a whole to make sure the people behind this act of cowardly violence (kind of like the way you wrote your rewiew) and any kind of terroristic threats on U.S.A. would never happen again. But I guess for some of you people that was just like hopping on the band wagon for a short period of time.

It's not a matter of what song's are good to listen to and what songs aren't. It's about a bunch of people who support the country (they love) so they can feel safe to go shopping, go to work or just go for a walk and not have to worry about some idiot flying a couple of planes into some building's or into the ground and never see their loved ones or the light of day ever again.

How can you say you love something if you are going to let it get hurt and not try to justify the situation. I feel sorry for the people in your life.

Could Kenny Rogers be a continuous, viable presence on country radio today? Probably not. In 1999, "Buy Me a Rose" made him the oldest artist to reach #1 in the history of the country charts. And to the contemporary tattoo-and-tank-top record buyers, that rates the Gambler a great-grandfather--hey, maybe as old as Hank Williams, ya think? Nonetheless, Water and Bridges, his first studio effort in three years, is an impressive comeback. Produced by Dann Huff (Faith Hill, Keith Urban), who keeps the backing leaner than you might expect, the album spotlights a mature man looking back and surveying his life with clear-eyed honesty and more than a little regret. What strikes a listener most is both the quality of songs (by such veteran writers as Craig Wiseman, Annie Roboff, and Mike Reid) and how authentic and soulful Rogers seems throughout, particularly in dealing with the recurring theme of loss. Whether contemplating a long-ago abortion, a lifelong rift with a parent, or the tug of home--even when home is no longer there--Rogers always underplays the sentiment, adding weight to his pathos. "The Last 10 Years (Superman)" and "The Petition" seem a little too obvious and maudlin, but Huff and Rogers make up for it with the extraordinary "You'll Know Love," a sophisticated and anguished ballad of nearly paralyzing grief. Call it just one of many surprises on this album of unexpected and serious depth. --Alanna Nash

5 out of 5 stars I Can't Unlove This Album.......2007-05-04

My Mum and I love this album! It really is a great piece of work. "My Petition" is one of the stand-out tracks, about a young man who who knocks on Kenny's door and asks him to sign his petition to the president: "Make a law where Daddies don't work late/Keep Uncle Joe and those soldiers safe/Give those kids on TV all they want to eat/Put a stop to bullies on the bus/No crime, no aids, no hate, no drugs/Give a jacket and a job to people on the street".

The title track is really good as well, about an unborn child and how an abortion is all water under a bridge.

Another outstanding track is the hit "I Can't Unlove You": "I can't unthink about you/I can't unfeel your touch/I can't unsay all the words/Undo all the things/That used to mean so much/I wish I could unremember/Everything my hearts been through ... I can't unlove you."

"The Last Ten Years (Superman)" is a great, powerful track about all that's happened in the last ten years and all the people who have died - even Christopher Reeve. "We lost George Harrison, John Paul and June Carter Cash/We even lost Superman".

All in all, a remarkable album with some fine wordsmiths and songwriters. Kenny's vocals are intimate throughout.

Put simply: I can't unlove this album!

5 out of 5 stars Kenny Rogers - Better than ever.......2006-10-08

Awesome ! Especially love the song done as a tribute to "Superman".

5 out of 5 stars I keep coming back to listen to this CD over and over.......2006-08-25

When I saw this CD promoted on CMT I wrote it off as a sad, washed-up former star trying to make a comeback (I was also put off by his apparent plastic surgery - what happened to this poor guy?). I decided to check it out anyway - listening to "I Can't Unlove You". I was immediately hooked. This is a wonderful song and Kenny's voice is simply amazing. A few of the songs are somewhat corny (as others have noted) but I found them to be a nice diversion from the usual Top 40 fare focused on sex, drugs or worse. After buying and listening to the entire CD I was very impressed - there are some great songs here that will stick with you long after you've listened to them. This is a great CD and will probably be sadly overlooked by many people because of the "reasons" I stated above. If you are as skeptical as I was give it a listen anyway - you will be pleasantly surprised.

This CD has 10 songs on it (8 are duets with Kenny Rogers and Dottie West). Doesn't get better than that. "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer" with Rogers and Kim Carnes is great and then there is "We've Got Tonight" with Sheena Easton and Rogers. Unless you are really stuck to hear the Sheena Easton and Kim Carnes duets, you would probably be better off buying "Every Time Two Fools Collide" which is a collection of Kenny Rogers and Dottie West duets.

4 out of 5 stars Not the original, but I still love it!.......2007-03-15

Well, I was disappointed to find out when I received this CD that it wasn't a rerelease of the original album. I saw the title and purchased it without looking at the song contents. OH well, it is still a great album, just not what I was looking for, but I will keep it as I love Dottie West! I hope they eventually do a rerelease of the original album, cause when they do I will buy it...but until then I will make sure to view song contents from now on so I don't do this again!

1 out of 5 stars A Few Fallen Stars.......2007-01-24

With all due respect to the dearly departed Dottie West, and the still livin' Kenny Rogers, this album is in my opinion deserves only 1 star if that. If you like remakes of Anne Murray- with YOU NEEDED ME, and (HEY WON'T YOU PLAY) ANOTHER SOMEBODY DONE SOMEBODY WRONG SONG- from BJ Thomas, to LET IT BE ME- The Everly Bros. The Righteous Bros, and Buck Owens, then you will enjoy this CD. With BREAD'S - BABY I'M A WANT YOU- the only person in my book that has ever done that song any justice is Charly McClain off her 1979 ALONE TOO LONG Lp. Dottie West and Kenny Rogers are good in any respect.. but not here in this Lp. This LP is a few fallen stars of a good hit.

5 out of 5 stars Classic '70's hits.......2006-02-02

This is a great collection of duets by Kenny Rogers and Dottie West, a duo who were hugely popular in the late-70s, both as solo singers and together. This album features their three Number 1 hits, "Everytime two fools collide", "All I ever need is you" and "What are we doing in love". Also featured is their top 5 "Anyone who isn't me tonight" and another popular cut "'Til I can make it on my own". Country fans will be familiar with most of the material here, a lot of pop fans too.
My favorite cut has to be "Let it be me", both singers are at their best on this performance, and it would have been great to use this as the closing track, but een so, this collection is great.

In the 1990's EMI issued a 20 track collection of duets by Kenny and Dottie in the UK which contained both of their studio albums from 1978 and 1979, and ultimately 9 of the 10 cuts here (plus 11 others) however, that is long out of print. The only "extra" you get here is "What are we doing in love", as it didn't appear on either album, but was a single release from 1981.

This CD, however, is cheaply priced, but the music is gourmet.

5 out of 5 stars Budget compilation of original recordings.......2005-08-01

It seems that some customers have been misled by the title, which corresponds to that of the first duets album recorded together by Kenny and Dottie. Although this is not a re-issue of that original album, these are definitely their original recordings. Most of the tracks here are actually taken from their second duets album, Classics, which consisted mainly of covers of famous songs.

So here you get the two big hits from their first duets album (Every time two fools collide, Anyone who isn't me tonight), their last duet hit (What are we doing in love), which didn't appear on either of their two duet albums - it came later - and covers of You needed me, All I ever need is you, Hey won't you play another somebody done somebody wrong song, Let it be me, Till I can make it on my own and You've lost that loving feeling. Some of these covers were big hits for Kenny and Dottie.

Though the packaging is modest without liner notes or credits (this is a budget collection), this collection provides a good sample of the duets that Kenny and Dottie recorded together. Many of these tracks (and some not included here) can be found tucked away in solo compilations by Kenny and Dottie but this provides a rare opportunity to hear their duets as a collection. It'll do until a more complete collection is released - especially at the price.

1 out of 5 stars NOT THE ORIGINAL..........2003-12-05

As much as I love the music of Kenny Rogers and Dottie West, this is NOT THE ORIGINAL album that was released in 1978 under the same title. The original album featured a beige background, with Dottie leaning up on Kenny's shoulder. This is deliberate deception on the part of EMI to make you think you are getting the original album, when in fact, what you are really getting is a compilation of the first album (Every Time Two Fools Collide) from 1978 and their second one, "Classics", from 1979. I don't understand why these companies continue to do this. The same goes for the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton "Once Upon a Christmas" album. Most of Kenny's solo songs have been omitted entirely, replaced with a Dolly Parton song (Hard Candy Christmas) which wasn't even part of the original LP release in 1984! What's going on? This is precisely the reason I hang on to my old 8-tracks and vinyl LP's, as tired and wore out as they may be. Now, getting back on track here, the ORIGINAL "Every Time Two Fools Collide" album contained these tracks in the following order:

1. Every Time Two Fools Collide
2. You And Me
3. What's Wrong With Us Today
4. Beautiful Lies
5. That's The Way It Could Have Been
6. Why Don't We Go Somewhere And Love
7. Baby I'm A Want You
8. Anyone Who Isn't Me Tonight
9. The Loving Gift
10 We Love Each Other.

That's the way I remember it folks, and that's the way it should have been re-issued. I'm sorry, but either release the original album in its entirety without butchering it up or omitting songs, or just don't even bother. I'm tired of wasting my time and money on deceptive and sly business practices from the music industry.

This robust collection is as good a place as any to start for those interested in revisiting Kenny Rogers's long, glorious run on the country and pop charts through the 1970s and early 1980s. It includes early countrified milestone hits like "Lucille" and "The Gambler," as well as later pop-flavored outings like "Lady" and "You Decorated My Life." It's rounded out with a sampling of the smooth pop duets he recorded with leading ladies like Sheena Easton ("We've Got Tonight"), Kim Carnes ("Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer"), and the late Dottie West ("'Till I Can Make It on My Own"). All told, this is among the strongest of the many single-CD compilations that have been culled from Rogers's long, prolific, and varied career. --Bob Allen

5 out of 5 stars Check your CD's & downloads before you buy.......2007-01-07

I love Kenny Rogers music and almost made the mistake of purchasing this one. Fortunately I double checked my CD list and found that I already had the "25 Greatest Hits" CD. the "20 Greatest Hits" CD is exactly the same except the last 5 songs have been cut out. The CD covers are even the same. The missing songs are:

Abraham, Martin & John/Precious Memories
Love Is What We Make It
Green Green Grass of Home
Desperado
Sweet Music Man

If you can't find the "25 Greatest Hits" then definetly go with with the "20"... it's great music. However - check your CD's first & make sure that you don't already have the "25". Either way, it's Kenny Rogers music and these were all from his best period. Also, if you don't already have it, the "Water & Bridges" CD (his newest) is very good.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better Kenny Rogers CD. you can't go wrong with Kenny Rogers greatest hits CDs........2006-10-13

First I just want to say that I'm a big fan of Kenny Rogers so I might be biased but I'll try to be objective.

You pretty much get most of Kenny Rogers greatest songs. but if you are a Kenny Rogers fan, you might want to also check the "42 Ultimate hits" album and the "21 Number ones". There are a lot of overlap though some with different version of the songs. I like this CD a lot too and I don't think you can go wrong by buying any Kenny Rogers Greatest hits CDs..

I like about 80% of the songs in this CD..

Lots of beautiful love songs in this CD: Through the years, Island in the stream, You decorated my life, She believes in me, Love will turn you around, We'ge got tonight etc..

For Kenny Roger's new fan, check out "21 Number Ones" album (this CD), "the greatest hit" album and the "Kenny Rogers live by request". Also check the new CD Water and Bridges. The song "I can't unlove you" is a hit.

Here are some of my all time Kenny Rogers favorite songs (almost all of them available in the "21 Number Ones" album. I call this list, Kenny Rogers essential:

The Gambler
Through The Years
Lady
Lucille
Coward of The County
We've Got Tonight (with Sheena Easton)
Crazy
Islands In The Stream (with Dolly Parton)
She Believes In Me
You Decorated My Life
Make No Mistake, She's Mine (with Ronnie Milsap)
Daytime Friends
Love Or Something Like It
Love Will Turn You Around
Morning Desire
The Factory
Twenty years ago
Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer (with Kim Carnes)
Ruby, Don't take your love to town
Buried treasure
I don't call him daddy
She's ready for someone to love her

5 out of 5 stars great greatest hits.......2006-08-30

Many greatest hits albums make you wonder who was picking the songs, but not this one. All of the tunes are great if you like Kenny Rogers at all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Service.......2006-03-14

It came in on time and was a gift for my mother and she is really enjoying it! Thank you for the fast service!

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good For A Single Disc Compilation!.......2005-12-20

Yes, the sound quality could have been a tad bit better, but it's not like the CD's unlistenable or anything. The CD clocks in around 73 minutes and the song selection is great, so that kind of makes up for the sound. Every single song is great! Some of the later classics are missing, but I'm pretty sure this hit collection was made back in 83' so that explains that.

This would be the only single disc of Kenny Rogers I'd recommend. I actually recommend getting his 42 Ultimate Hits instead, but if you don't want more than one disc, this is definitely the one to get. You oughta listen to Ultimate Ronnie Milsap and Lionel Richie's Definitive Collection too, if you like Kenny!

5 out of 5 stars Kenny Rogers fan.......2007-06-10

I actually have this on a record not a cd. I love the record. It has all my favorite Kenny Rogers' songs on it.
This album, whether you have it on record format or cd format, is a must for all Kenny Rogers' fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Mother of Greatest Hits Albums!.......2005-01-28

This has got to be one of my favorite greatest hits albums from Kenny Rogers! I remember back when I was 4 years old and my uncle bought this album when it was actually on record. This was my first experience with listening to Kenny. My uncle just bought it to see if he liked him or not. But I was hooked from day one! When I got my first cassette player a few years later, this album was the very first cassette I got! And then eventually I bought the album again on CD! This is a must for any Kenny Rogers fan and for those just finding out who Kenny Rogers is! Not to mention this album has sold over 22 million copies world wide! It sold over 12 million in this country alone! And has earned Kenny his first and only Diamond Award for selling over 10 million of any one album!

5 out of 5 stars Twelve timeless classics from one of the true greats.......2004-05-07

The early 1980s was a strange musical time period. As a child, I didn't really know that pop and country were distinct genres because the local radio station played songs of both types all the time. My favorite singers around 1981 were Stevie Wonder and Kenny Rogers - weird, huh? Kenny Rogers was huge back then, though. Lucille, Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town, Coward of the County, Long Arm of the Law - these are great cross-over hits that made Kenny Rogers a star. Then there was The Gambler, a song so popular and enjoyable that it spawned a TV movie (as did Coward of the County). The kicker, though, was the song Lady (a song written and produced by Lionel Richie); I had a teacher who would melt at the very thought of this song, and I myself, a lad barely past the "cooties" stage of growing up, pretended to woo the young ladies with my own rendition of the song (in the utter privacy of my room, of course).

As an adult, I have an even greater appreciation of the songs included on this album. She Believes in Me is one of those rare ballads that speaks directly to your heart; it's a great tribute to all the women who put up with all of us men who don't deserve their love. A man doesn't want to admit he needs anything or anybody, but the love and trust of a good woman means much more than most men would ever admit. Just ask the husband of Lucille, who finds himself trying to raise four children by himself after his wife picks "a fine time to leave" him. You Decorated My Life is a beautiful homage to the miraculous life-giving power of love, and Love the World Away works the same kind of wonders. Lady, of course, is one of the greatest love songs ever recorded.

Story songs were one of Kenny Rogers' greatest strengths. Virtually everyone is familiar with the story of The Gambler. Coward of the County illustrates the point that, while you don't have to fight to become a man, sometimes you do have to fight when you are a man (especially when some ruffians hurt the woman you love). Long Arm of the Law is a rather moving song; here, a judge is determined to punish the young man who got his daughter pregnant - until the face of his new grandson softens his heart. Then there's Reuben James, who is still walking the fertile fields of our minds; there's plenty of giddy-up in this tribute to an ordinary, hard-working black man. Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town goes in yet a different direction, presenting us with an injured Vietnam veteran struggling to keep his marriage intact. This album also includes two duets. The husky-voiced Kim Carnes teams up with Kenny to deliver the energetic, pop-oriented Don't Fall In Love With a Dreamer, then the incomparable Dottie West joins Kenny for Everytime Two Worlds Collide, a classic country duet.

I'm not what you would call a country fan, but Kenny Rogers is much more than a country singer; he represents country, pop, and contemporary music all rolled up in one distinctive voice. This is a singer who still appeals to different generations of listeners. The great success Kenny Rogers enjoyed in the late 1970s and early 1980s can best be seen by his continued fame today, many years since his last bona fide hit song. Certainly, there are better, more complete Kenny Rogers collections out there than this one (which was released in 1980, after all, long before Kenny stopped releasing chart-topping hits), but I can't say anything bad about an album containing twelve songs of such high caliber and lasting appeal.

5 out of 5 stars The One and Only.......2003-01-07

This is the Kenny's Greatest Hits your Mama had on 8-Track. I think it sold like 7 million copies. It's got the best selection of songs from his late 70s / early 80s heyday. The only shortfall of this recording is the fidelity. Not much of an improvement over the 8-track. Always a favorite party CD. Pick this one up first and then go for one of the Kenny and th First Edition collections.

5 out of 5 stars I introduced Kenny to Lionel Richie in Las Vegas........1999-08-29

In 1980 Kenny (Rogers) wanted to do a soul album and was hoping to get some famous R&B groups to back him up. One night between shows, Bob Smith - the Riviera's stage manager - came to the dressing room and told me that Lionel Richie and The Commodores were downstairs and wanted to see Kenny. I brought them up and they told Kenny they were his biggest fans. Lionel had written a song for Kenny and wanted to play it for him. Kenny said he'd love to hear it and Lionel walked over to the piano. It was a magical moment. The song was "Lady" and the rest is history. "Lady" was on Kenny's Greatest Hits without having been on any other album. This set a precedent in country music which everyone has since copied. -- Garth Shaw
