Great soundtracks--up there with GI Blues.......2007-06-25

Many other reviews here pay homage to Viva Las Vegas, and rightly so. However, I have to strongly disagree with those who underappreciate Roustabout. This is one of the best soundtracks, with only two clunkers--Carny Town and It's Carnival time. The other nine songs are great, the title tune plus Little Egypt, Poison Ivy League, Hard Knocks, and One Track Heart--all great rockers. The other four include some good love songs and likeable swing-type songs. One review mentioned in passing that this album hit #1. That was in November 1964, which was the very height of the "British Invasion" when American artists were being pushed off the charts. To my knowledge, only Blue Hawaii and GI Blues hit #1 among the 60's soundtracks. The fact that Elvis could be #1 in late 64 is extraordinary and a testimony to how good this album had to be. It is definitely better than Blue Hawaii and a close second to GI Blues among the soundtracks. This combo with Viva Las Vegas is great.

Elvis Rocks "Hard Knocks".......2006-03-09

Unlike many fans of "The King", I was too young to appreciate his early music (Hound Dog, etc.) and too old to get into the overweight, jumpsuit Elvis. I found my niche at 10 when I saw Roustabout at a Saturday matinee. I was hooked. Every time I had a few dollars saved up I'd head to my local record shop and order (Elvis soundtracks aren't normally something they carried in stock)one of his movie tracks. Viva Las Vegas, Kissin Cousins, Roustabout, Girl Happy, and on and on. I have his greatest hits. etc, but when I want to rock out, it's always an Elvis soundtrack I drop in. How can you beat "Hard Knocks", "Big Love(big heartache)", "Viva Las Vegas" and "Come On Everybody"? Oh no doubt there are some clunkers amongst the gems ("Do the Vega" for example) but the bulk of these songs are really fun to listen to (and sing along) and I think capture Elvis in his prime.

I'm just a devil with love to spare........2005-04-29

This CD features the soundtracks to two Elvis movies released in 1964.

Viva Las Vegas is one of the best Elvis soundtracks of the '60s. The title song is an absolute classic, although it was one of his least successful singles at the time (the flip side, "What'd I Say", actually charted higher). The other songs on the soundtrack are also pretty good. There are two cute duets with co-star Ann-Margret. "I Need Somebody to Lean On" and "Today, Tomorrow and Forever" are good ballads. And "If You Think I Don't Need You" and "C'Mon Everybody" are fun, lightweight rockers. But there are a few clunkers here. "Do the Vega" is mediocre and the "Texas Medley" is downright awful. Overall, I would give this soundtrack 4 stars.

Roustabout, on the other hand, is not a good soundtrack. Most of the songs are terrible. It's worth noting that none of these songs were considered good enough to be released as a single. "Poison Ivy League" and "Big Love Big Heartache" are typical of the junk Elvis was often coerced into recording for soundtracks. But I do kind of like "Roustabout, "One Track Heart" and the cover of the Coasters' "Little Egypt". Those songs save the soundtrack from being totally worthless. I would give this soundtrack 2 stars.

Average out the 4 stars Viva Las Vegas soundtrack and the 2 stars Roustabout soundtrack, and you get a 3 stars CD.

Worth a listen for the open minded.......2001-09-03

Elvis' soundtrack recordings are generally considered the nadir of his career but the truth is that his singing until at least 1965 was generally superb and whenever he was given half a chance he always came through. This CD is exhibit "A".

On the "Viva Las Vegas" end, Presley is given a few decent tunes for once and turns in what would have been one of the period's most interesting albums,if this had been released as an album. You would never guess it from the film's camp reputation but Presley tries new things here. "Viva Las Vegas", which contains some of his most dramatic singing, is as good a mixture of swing and rock and roll as anything Bobby Darin ever did. That it's often dismissed as just another goofy movie song is unforgiveable. For Doc Pomus' lyrics, alone that capture the essence of the city, the song is a classic. The best ever remake of "What'd I Say" features the largest arrangement Presley had ever used up to that time. Driven by furious drumming from Hal Blaine who pounds his tom toms in a high speed endless roll and an ecstatic vocal by Presley, this is the only version that even comes close to Ray Charles. "I Need Someone to Lean On" is an intimate Frank Sinatra style saloon tune, also new territory for Presley. In more familiar areas "C'mon Everybody" and "If You Think I Don't Need You" are first-rate dance numbers and the duet with Ann Margaret on "You're the Boss" is thrillingly raunchy(you can feel their chemistry), far better than the original by Jimmy Ricks and Laven Baker. Much of the rest is standard movie fare but delivered with Presley's usual aplomb.

Roustabout is a bit of a different story. The material is weak, some of Presley's vocals seem a little rushed and it sounds like it was recorded in a canyon. Still, even here there are moments including a first-rate pop rock number in "One Track Heart" and a fine but very close to the original remake of the Coasters' "Little Egypt". Plus "Hard Knocks" and "Big Big Love Heartache" are better than passable.

Making all of the material a little more acceptable is the packaging which contains photos from the films (though not many) and session information. It's intelligent but not all it could be. The sound throughout features a little too much echo. (On Roustabout this can be attributed to the original recording conditions.) Also more detail in the liner notes would have been appreciated. Finally, it wouldn't have killed BMG to stuff a few hooks in here for collectors. Except for the previously released duets there are no rarities. Given the brief length of the album (53 minutes) there was plenty room for an alternate take or two especially the terrific movie version of "C'mon Everybody" which is still unreleased.
Overall though this is a must for fans, while the casual listener will be challenged but also rewarded.

Totally purchase worthy!.......2001-02-23

I purchased this CD years ago as a total Elvis hater turned appreciator after seeing the video and hearing the music. Elvis and Ann-Margret have an excellent chemistry and the Viva Las Vegas part of this CD is practically worn out! Buy this CD just for You're the Boss and The Lady Loves Me and you'll be happy. Buy the video, buy the CD and sing along! ...in the middle of the night when the moon is shining bright, you're the boss...

A long awaited album.......2005-12-28

Viva Las Vegas was one of the most profitable movies of Elvis Presley. The chemistry between Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret was lighting up the screen and all that chemistry is transcended into the many times neglected duets between the two leading actors.
Apart from the novelty piece "The Lady loves me" and the ever sensual "You're the Boss", we are presented with a musical gem that is to be cherished for many years now. The up-to-now solo version of the luscious ballad "Today, Tomorrow and Forever" is now given a new perspective. The beauty of the song is accentuated through the athereal vocals of Ann-Margret along with the lovely harmony between the two leads. The soundtrack of Viva Las Vegas overall presents the most diversified set of songs that have ever been set on a Presley movie. From the Italian classic "Santa Lucia" all the way to the traditional American medley of "The Yellow Rose of Texas - The Eyes of Texas" we are presented with distinctive melodies of separate lyrical and musical backgrounds.
The only shame remains that this time around, the second one following the Double Features presentation, the collection remains shy of the two Ann-Margret tunes featured in the film. That is really a great ommition when you take into consideration of the newly and pleasant appearence of "The Climb"

Better late than never.......2004-04-23

"Viva Las Vegas" is without doubt one of Elvis Presley's more convincing Hollywood outings with a good script, a superb set of songs, and the presence of Ann-Margret. For some perverse reason, though, the soundtrack has from the start been neglected and was never granted an album. At the time RCA considered the matter closed by releasing a single ("What'd I Say"/"Viva Las Vegas") and a four- song extended play in dull mono sound, leaving several songs on the shelve for years, or indeed, as in the case of the three Ann-Margret duets, ages after Elvis had been dead and buried. The present Follow That Dream release finally resurrects the soundtrack as it should, adding several outtakes as a delectable bonus, and presenting it all in outstanding sound quality and classy artwork. As has become customary in FTD's soundtrack releases there is a great booklet in a handy tri-fold digipack (the size of a 45rpm).
Better late than never. Enjoy!

Classic Elvis!!.......2003-12-05

This CD for the first time features the soundtrack of one of Elvis' most popular soundtracks. The sound quality is second to none and is a collector's dream. These songs were recorded in July/August 1963 and Elvis' commitment is obvious in the many outtakes featured on the CD. Highlights? Too many to mention but bonus points for the early take of Viva Las Vegas and the movie version of C'mon Everybody. As a long time Elvis fanatic this is a CD I had hoped would one day be released. Now it is. The packaging is also a highlight with rare photos and information. Buy with confidence.

This is the best Christmas cd I've ever heard. I play it all the time. I got this the week of Thanksgiving, and I got a Viva Las Vegas DVD too. Ann has become my favorite singer because of these and she'll be your favorite after playing this CD. She's awesome and this music is awesome. I wonder if she's made a DVD of these songs? She could also dance to these cool Christmas songs like in Viva Las Vegas. I hope she'll sing these songs on TV just like she does on this CD with this same band and these cool musicians.

A Career Highlight For The Vivacious One!.......2005-05-14

This CD album is a career highlight for Ann-Margret. She sings her little heart out on this one, and the results are one of the very best seasonal music collections of all time. I picked up this album while it still has a cult following before some mega label picks it up. It's got it all-the ultra-feminine, lady-loves-me vocals, the perfect song selection, exquisite, soulful, slightly-funky and rootsy musicianship, expert production by Grammy Award winner Art Greenhaw of Texas, and those fabulous oooh-ahhhh---doo wap-pers, The Jordanaires. Traditional American pop music at its highest and best. Not only will this be the first CD I put in the changer every November, but I find myself playing this inspiring, fun and rocking CD every week of the year. Ann-Margret and Art Greenhaw have teamed up again for a sparkling and refreshing adaptation of xmas standards that have taken on a whole new meaning.. The arrangements are great and a few like "what child is this", "g-d rest ye merry gentleman",and "the manger song" are haunting with a rock edge .."silent night" is fresh and original with what i believe have Swedish lyrics ---the jordinares and Ann-Margret seem to be enjoying "Go tell it on the mountain"---The entire package was a delight to listen to and I hope that this cd gets airplay and exposure --"g-d rest ye merry gentlemen" remains a favorite and this arragement is hip--Ive loved Ann-Margret for a long time and love all the oldies --it is nice that Ann-Margret is still re-inventing herself---in the 80's she was a perfect fit for the Rock and heavy guitar of Paul Sabu--would have liked to hear more of ann-margrets interpretation of sabus music--But 20 years later Art Grenhaw has captured the sensitive--and still so hot and very sexy------Ann-margret

One of Top Ten Christmas Albums of All Time!.......2004-11-25

I had been anxiously awaiting this album since I read about it a year back, and the CD is the ultimate American Christmas album. Every song, every arrangement is simply magnificent, a Christmas album that will go down as the very best in the pop standard arena. Ann-Margret perfectly combines the holy and the sexy for the most entertaining CD of the year, and one that I'll play not only at Christmas, but all the year through. The playfullness of Jingle Bells is the perfect counter to the sacredness of "I Hear The Bells". Moviedom's gain with Ann-Margret has been recording's lost, and let's only hope that the great Ann-Margret, recording star, will issue many more CDs as dynamie as this! Wait until you hear Ann-Margret's take on "What Child Is This" and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen". If you can imagine a Christmas/holy version of the lounge classic "13 Men" then these are it. Fabulous guitars, fabulous vocals, fabulous beat group/best of pop-rock sound here and on all selections. You can feel the emotion in the grooves. No synthesized, fake-o sounds here, just "live" "you are here" exciting music with sounds created by real musical instruments and voices. This is a magnificent companion CD to Ann-Margret's GOD IS LOVE, with this Christmas CD having more of a pop bent, and GOD IS LOVE being more country. God Bless singer Ann-Margret. God Bless this CD's music makers and directors. This CD has made my Christmas and my 2005 to come! It's the greatest!
