The rain, the train and other things.......2007-03-12
At various moments throughout ONE STORMY NIGHT, thunderclaps, cloudbursts and other sounds blend perfectly with the tone of the songs. The orchestrations are appropriately restrained and pensive. A sound collage of freight train and rain is quite effective, as well. This is still a most lovely set of easy listening music, and is highly recommended.

One Stormy Night- Great Plains Nostalgia.......2007-01-12
punctuated by occasional loud claps of thunder and enhanced by the distant barking of a hound and the lonesome wail of a steam locomotive's whistle.

the last sounds before dropping off for a nights sleep. It's an essential element of anyone's collection.

The Whole Thing.......2007-05-10
Jarvi's reading is smooth and incisive and the choral parts are wonderful. I've never heard a scarier version of HOTMK. I never even knew that there was a solo vocal part for Peer himself, but here it is.
My only complaint-and it's a tiny one-is that the selections are not in the order that they would appear in Ibsen's play. But that's picking a very small nit indeed.
Hauntingly Beautiful.......2007-03-11
The soloists on this album are outstanding. I consider baritone Peter Mattei to be the most talented baritone of his type today and his rendition of Peer Gynt's Serenade is nothing short of incredible. Soprano Camilla Tilling as Soveig has a lovely ethereal sound to her voice which is used to great effect in her songs. Tilling has the loveliest female voice I have ever heard. Mezzo Charlotte Hellekant has also grown on me as Anitra. Many of these vocal songs are not included on other versions of Peer Gynt, which is a great shame. The choir, something I don't usually enjoy, is very impressive.
I would rate this CD as by far the best version of Peer Gynt and perhaps my favorite CD of all time. The sound quality of the recording should also be mentioned because it is absolutely stunning.
Good-enough readings but outstanding sound.......2007-02-21
Secondly, there's the sound. The engineers have achieved quite exceptinally clear, open sonics that I've never heard the like of in Peer Gynt. Even when Jarvi's conducting is ordinary and his Estonian musician ae playing at far less than virtuosic level, the gorgeous sounds coming out of one's speakers remain alluring. As far as completeness goes, the Ruud 2-CD set from Bis is unchallenged.
Passionate.......2006-08-18
Maybe this is THE (one disc-) Peer Gynt album to own ..........2006-02-15
Together with the recordings by Neeme Jarvi (27 cues; DGG), Marriner (only 12 cues; EMI), Tate (17 cues; EMI), Blomstedt (19 cues; Decca), Dreier (the first truly complete recording of all of the original music (1978); 32 cues, including 'Bridal Procession', 'Solveig's Song' and three 'Norwegian Dances' all of them n o t originally written for the play; Unicorn UKCD + NKFCD) and Ruud (the first complete recording with 29 cues plus all of the dialogue, making a total of 51 cues, coming up on 113 minutes; BIS), these two (1-CD) albums by Paavo Jarvi and Esa-Pekka Salonen are as complete as can get concerning this so called 'incidental' music for the Henrik Ibsen play of Peer Gynt. Nowadays, Peer Gynt is Norway's No. 1 national epic, thereby giving this music extra significance and poignancy. Originally, there are in all some twenty-six numbers of incidental music for the play: almost ninety minutes of music, as can be learned from the booklet-essay. And according to the booklet, twenty of those are on this album; No. 5, 10, 11, 14, 18 and 24 are left out of this recording. 'Solveig's Song' wasn't originally written for the stage play but nonetheless included as such on this CD, so actually 19 original pieces from Peer Gynt, op. 23 are on this album, and not 20. But anyhow, such 'criticism' would amount to nitpicking ;-)
Here I would like to warn the reader that this will be a somewhat one-sided review, as I have only ever heard the Peer Gynt-recordings of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Per Dreier (freshly inspired, very natural performances) and this newest one of Paavo Jarvi. So this review is, for what it is worth, a personal and somewhat subjective approach, leaving out many other alternatives ...
Anyhow, as for the one-CD albums of Peer Gynt, op. 23, the merits of the Salonen/Oslo Philharmonic album (aside from the artistic ones, which are huge, as well as spot on as far as the 'Nordic' atmosphere of the music is concerned) lie in the fact that - up to now - it has been as near 'complete' a rendering of the music for Peer Gynt - as much as fits on one CD - as one might wish, covering the whole dramatic arc of the play from beginning to end (but without any of the spoken dialogue). I believe that this new recording with Paavo Jarvi is even more complete - as could be fitted on one disc - and gives the listener an even better feel of the drama of the play, if only because there is more singing here, namely by Peer Gynt (in the delightful 'Peer Gynt's Serenade'). Also, one hears here seldomly recorded, but wonderfully evocative pieces, such as 'Peer Gynt and the Woman in Green', 'Peer gynt: you can tell great men by the style of their mounts', 'Peer Gynt at the Statue of Memnon' (similar to 'Prelude Act III: Deep in the Coniferous Forest' on the Salonen/Oslo Philharmonic album. Actually it is the same piece, but it was never intended as the prelude to act III) and 'The Shipwreck'. Simply delightful, all this! As are all the soloists - truly, the best one could wish for! - singing in this recording. If I may steal a quote from Tim Ashley, The Guardian, May 13, 2005: "Peter Mattei is the swollen-headed Peer, Camilla Tilling a dignified, unsentimental Solveig and the incomparable Charlotte Hellekant a camp but lethally seductive Anitra." But although Camilla Tilling's Solveig is superb, IMHO she is not as completely involved-sounding or as convincing in the projecting of the troubled mind and heart of (especially the elderly) Solveig as does Barbara Hendricks for Esa-Pekka Salonen.
Even more than Esa-Pekka Salonen's performance with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, this recording offers the listener a more 'true to the letter-performance', as the music is here performed as heard during the play, as witnessed by 'Solveigs vuggevise' ('Solveig's Cradle Song'), where her singing is interlaced with the 'Whitsun Hymn', which, to the ears of this listener, only heigtening the sense of drama and storytelling.
All in all a fantastic album, I believe, and one that brings into focus the drama even more than other recordings of this music. Even though the orchestral playing of the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra is maybe a (slight) nodge below that of the Oslo Philharmonic under Salonen and missing out on the deepest or finer layers of melancholy and dramatic tension (which are indeed touched upon by Salonen, I think), it is warmly sympathetic and more lush (as is the acoustics of the recording venue).
The really adventurous or Peer Gynt-completists (and once taken this step, the all too brief Suites will never be an option again!) should really go for Dreier or Ruud - this last one is said to be simply magnificent (music as well as acting) - but this generous one disc album, with some of the most gorgeous playing and singing, is warmly recommended (at least, in my opinion) to anyone who loves this wonderfully evocative music. Delightful!

The Flame Still Burns.......2006-10-19
From the opening lines of Havens' new CD, Grace of the Sun, it's clear this troubadour hasn't lost one bit of his distinctively soulful voice. Indian percussionist Badal Roy's tabla blends with the singer's own trademark open-tuned strumming to take the listener back to the days when the music really mattered. After the upbeat second cut, "Way Down Deep," you're pulled into the music, rockin' in rhythm just like Richie himself as he wowed the Woodstock crowd with his improvised riff that became known as "Freedom."
Ironically, track three is Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock." While an appropriate number for this great interpreter to tackle, he approaches the song more like Joni's own somber version than like Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's rocker, and at six minutes long, it drags. Unfortunately, the disc drags in several other spots along the way, and a certain sameness threatens to take hold as the program progresses. It's not that the tempos are slow, for there is rhythmic variety, but the overall tone of the album feels down, almost mournful.
There are some nice sonic touches within the arrangements, and the instrumental "Dusk" has a delicious world music ambience with electric sitar and Turkish violin. However, the individual components of the acoustic guitar army employed on most cuts get in the way of one another at times.
Havens has always been a master at reinventing Dylan tunes, but choosing the oft-covered "All Along the Watchtower" leaves little room for originality. Better is his original "When," which borrows liberally from the chord structure of "Just Like a Woman," giving a point of reference to a questioning lyric that says, "Our dreams have all been raided/by every type of greed/Our freedoms have been traded/along with everything we need."
"Scarlet Flames" opens like a remake of "Handsome Johnny," then evolves into a call for action to "help your brother, love one another" and "stand up and sing while you do your thing." Now this is more like it!
It's obvious that Richie Havens has not given up the fight, for you can hear the commitment in his music as he stands tall within the Grace of the Sun.

Masterful - well worthwhile.......2005-01-01
A spiritual musical journey..........2004-10-05
It is this credo he has spread the world over since performing as the opening act of the Woodstock folk music festival in 1969. In tribute to the 35th anniversary of the festival, Havens performs a spirited rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock." A wonderful folk song by Mitchell and a spirited rock anthem by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Havens delivers what can only be called an epitaph for those individuals who were daring enough to dream of peace, and beautiful enough to make that dream a reality, even if only for one weekend.
This, his second release in as many years, reflects Havens at his finest, as he appears to be approaching a new outburst of creativity in his already storied tenure as a folk legend. In a career closing in on 4 decades of performing and recording music, the multi-talented Havens has recently began exploring photography, painting, and even digital art, seeking new ways to express himself. While Havens may be proving that an old dog can learn new tricks on Grace of the Sun, he still comes through with the classic Havens sound on his covers as well as a few originals. A must own for any Havens fan and a good intro for any curious listener.
Better Than Ever!.......2004-09-15
This album shows Richie at his best. His skills as a writer and composer are honed to a razor sharp edge. His choice and interpretation of covers are perfect. Joni Mitchell's "Woodstock" gets a new lease on life for its 35th anniversary. Fred Neil's "Red Flowers" is an especially moving ballad, perfect for our current troubled times.
Havens' original songs are nothing short of fantastic and make this album a perfect and well rounded work of art. While the great quality of all of the original songs makes it impossible to pick a favorite, the trippy eastern influenced instrumental, "Dusk" is the most uncharacteristic composition on the album, showing off Havens' well developed skills as a composer.
If you don't own this album you owe it to yourself to grab a copy.

Best overall - but not perfect.......2007-01-28
1. It omits Lena's only significant chart hit, 'Love Me Or Leave Me' (#19, 1955)
2. The mastering is good, but not as good as later discs (e.g. 'The Classic Lena Horne')
3. The material is strictly RCA - which excludes most of her movie classics.
But, if you're gonna buy only one, this would be my recommendation. Try to get the original RCA edition - not the chintzy Jazz Heritage reissue.

From a SNOOPY Expert.......2003-06-20
Still, it's a sweet, subtle production with no social relevance and little ability to inspire anyone. It's nothing more than a vaudeville of Charles Schultz characters that is supremely difficult to be successful with. I mean, please, how plausible is a quintet of 5-year-olds singing about "Edgar Allen Poe" anyway? Still, once you've hurtled the point of annoyance, it's suddenly easy to appreciate the delicious rhymes employed and the hidden maturity of the themes and, sometimes, of the characters (cough cough, Linus).
Why only three stars? Because this recording is inferior to the London recording. I've only heard the other once, but it's an instanteous reaction: realizing that only a rethinking of the original can improve the whole. First, this CD only has piano accompaniment vs. the other's small band. It's surprising how different (and more entertaining) a small ensemble can make of this show. Also, this CD omits "The World According to Snoopy--Reprise" and "Snoopy's Song" for no good reason. The performances aren't particularly appealing either. I found Snoopy's unrefined, wobbly voice unsuited for the dry character and almost cowardly (believe it or not). Linus isn't all too great (I should know, remember?) and suffers from the same lack of confidence that Snoopy does. Not even the famous Pamela Myers could redeem this recording for me: she's too much of a screamer even for the caustic Peppermint Patty. I did like Sally, but she has little material to sing, unfortunately.
So, yeah. Buy the 1983 London recording (it even has some extra songs written for it!). It really is a quaint, lovable little piece that is perfect for children and children-at-heart. Just think...a musical about characters we all can't help but loving. Almost brings a tear to my eye.

Customer Reviews:
Lena Horne at her peak on a wonderful, generous CD !!!!.......2007-05-03
The CD track set begins with "Tomorrow Mountain;" and this song has an excellent musical arrangement which backs up Lena's golden voice. Lena's voice is lush, warm and vibrant as she sings of a happy place where hopes and dreams are fulfilled. "Summertime" also gets the regal treatment from Lena as she interprets this classic ballad as only she could. Her voice simply never sounded better and the musical arrangement makes great use of the horns and percussion. Moreover, "Mad About The Boy" is a marvelous love ballad; and Lena delivers this so flawlessly you truly are convinced that she is deeply in love with her man.
Of course, Lena also sings "Stormy Weather." For the better part of the song Lena sings this with a high octane level of energy that she didn't display in the movie of the same name. However, as the liner notes correctly point out, later on in the ballad after Lena sings the word "love" four times she reverts to the much slower, angst filled rendition of the song. The comparison between the two "renditions" of this song both within a single track amazes me and you will be sure to enjoy it, too.
Lena belts out "Just One Of Those Things" with great panache and the musical arrangement makes great use once again of the horns and percussion. The quality of the recording lacks a little because of some distortion caused by Lena's microphone. Oh, well. It's still heavenly if you ask me.
Lena delivers "The Surrey With The Fringe On Top" so perfectly that you're bound to want to listen to it again the very instant the song ends; what an elegant performance!
The CD also features two tracks previously unreleased: an extra rendition of "Stormy Weather" and "Come Runnin." A fantastic extra that makes this CD a "must-have" for Lena's fans everywhere!
The liner notes give you the song credits and you get wonderful black and white photos of Lena dressed so elegantly you think you're looking at the most glamorous lady ever. There is a reproduction of the reverse of the album cover for the LP entitled Stormy Weather and Farah Griffin contributes a great essay about Lena.
I highly recommend this for fans of Lena Horne; and people who want to hear Lena at her best would do well to choose this album for starters. People who enjoy classic pop vocals will absolutely cherish this album.
Enjoy! Great job, Lena!!!!

Boskovsky's encyclopedic collection with the Vienna Philharmonic, recorded between 1957 and 1976, is as close to definitive as one is likely to get. There was a special camaraderie between Boskovsky and the Philharmonic--he was a member of the orchestra's violin section for 37 years and conducted their New Year's Day concerts from 1955 until 1979. There was also a special empathy that these performers, as custodians of a tradition going back to its origins, felt for the music of the Strauss family. It comes across quite wonderfully on these mid-price CDs, which have been painstakingly remastered for an edition every collector should have. --Ted LibbeyCustomer Reviews:

Boskovsky and the Strauss Family of Vienna........2003-06-12
No combination has ever excelled Willi Boskovsky and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in performing this repertoire. Although the waltzes, polkas, quadrilles, marches and overtures were performed over and over again by these musicians, there is never a hint of workaday routine or staleness to be heard here. Everything seems to unfold naturally. Each item's inherent character is displayed. Tiny nuances and felicities of phrasing and a balance that favors the melody and reduces the accompaniment make these performances inimitable. The performance of "Morgenblätter" seems to provide a tad more excitement and impact than the other 85 items.
The recordings were made between 1960 and 1976. They are studio recordings, not deriving from the famous New Year concerts, and all but the few items from the very earliest year provide excellent sound.
