Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The solo debut from the leader of the Subdudes is a study in eclectics, a mixed-genre body of work that ranges from countrified blues to Louisiana funk to comfortable country-rock, with a brief ending flare of free jazz ("Somebody Got Caught," if you're wondering). There's a bit that sounds a lot like Eric Clapton ("Mothers") and a couple of R&B-flavored numbers (the title track and "Hold On," in particular). All in all, it's an impressive showcase for a talent that's been nurtured by a 20-plus-year career. Since Malone cites rock, soul, and country as major influences, the strange brew that is Soul Heavy shouldn't be too surprising, and since he's from New Orleans, the strong swamp inflection here is not unexpected, either. This is a fine example of how musical influences can combine to form a distinctive whole. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars More Tales Of Gothic Menace From The King.......2007-07-08

King Diamond has really created his own distinct style and genre, and in a playing field with no other contenders, he reamains the King indeed. King Diamond albums have been something I look forward to since I was 13 or so, when I first heard "Them". Bizarre, gothic and dark concept albums featuring the phenomenal classic metal guitar work of Andy LaRocque and others and, of course, King Diamond's incomparable caterwauling vocals and sinister storytelling, there is nothing else quite like it.

"Give Me Your Soul Please" is no exception, and an excellent addition to King's canon, his latest tale of the supernatural involves murder, suicide, a ghostly apparition of a little girl in a bloody dress, a black cat, and a floating severed head. So, business as usual. (laughs) I always love the way King assumes the voices of different characters in his stories in an almost theatrical manner, and the eerie music and amazing, intese riffs and solos laid out on this release by Mike Wead and Andy LaRocque are just sick....I had a blast with this disc, but for other King fans it is perhaps a bit weaker than some of his other releases (although it is hard to top the trifecta of "Them", "Conspiracy" and "The Eye", which remain my favorite). For folks who are new to the King, this really isn't a bad place at all to start. Be sure to listen all the way through, preferably in one sitting (the only proper way to listen to a King Diamond album). In a crowded metal scene, this stuff really comes off as being quite original....recommended!

5 out of 5 stars From beyond the grave..........2007-07-07

Another splendid musical horror novel from King Diamond, the little girl in the bloody dress comes through the mirror, uncertain about her state of being... the introductory song "Dead" is laden with mood-setting organ, haunting voices explaining the basics of the disturbing plot, dealing with a little brother and sister who were murdered by their father, but are scheduled for different destinations "after death" - it is up to her to save him from Hell, after being accused by "the powers that be" of suicide. She reveals the true circumstances of their demise - to set the terms "right" so they may 'rest in peace' together, presumably in "Heaven", although 'demons' pine for both their 'souls' in this supernatural adventure / thriller concept album.

The album features the spectral voice of Livia Zita, whom you may recognize from 'The Puppet Master' as well, adding an enchanting compliment to the music as well as storyline. Besides the intricate Metal instrumentation, cellos and the harpsichord are included, adding an eerie feel to the brilliant orchestration.

Of particular note, My personal favorites herein are "Dead" {the 'gothic' horror instrumental}, "Give Me Your Soul" {really displays the talent and skill of the band}, "Shapes of Black" {great beat and harmony; one can actually relate to these occurrences, environment, and denizens}, "Cold As Ice" {the cold temperature in the dark room even in remmus}, "Girl In The Bloody Dress" {the rhythms and correlations of voices}, and "Moving On" {the hypnotically-melancholy quality and voice combinations} .

The aesthetics are predictably wonderfully ornate, of course featuring the band, and one Magic, King's black cat familiar, perceiving the ghost as familiars are said to sense. It was also gratifying to see the band dressed in black robes within, each signalling the Cornu, adding a most evocatively mystical impression. King promises a Hell of a show to accompany this chapter as well, repleat with horror psychodrama.

Overall, 'Give Me Your Soul... Please' is definitely one of King's best.

3 out of 5 stars Creepy As Hell . . ........2007-07-05

I was lucky enough to get this new CD a day early, and I haven't stopped listening to it since. The guitar work is incredible and the story is scarry as hell! I think that King Diamond has finally got a solid line up that willl work for him.

5 out of 5 stars puro heavy metal !!!!.......2007-07-02

In the King We Trust increible disco igual o mejor que su anterior trabajo. Rif bien heavy y uso una combinacion de sus voces q hace del album uno no monotono. Para mi estos dos ultimos album the Diamond han sido los mejores en los pasados 15 años.

5 out of 5 stars "Totally Gnarly" or "Gag me with a Spoon"?.......2007-05-31

Some of the greatest moments of my life were in high school!! The mid 80's when I was carefree and lived life unfettered! No bills, no boss, no cares! Just me and my pastel suits and thin leather ties and full head of hair....(Man, I actually WORE those suits?!?!)
Fond nostalgia aside, the whole 'retro' thing is forcing the 80's upon us once again and you might as well admit that you were one of the characters from The Breakfast Club! (Mmmmmm....Ally Sheedy.)
Dropping these discs into my player and hitting shuffle just makes it all come flooding back!
But to tell a shameful truth? I really HAD to buy this set because of "Pac-Man Fever" by Buckner and Garcia and "Sweetheart" by Franke & the Knockouts. I've never seen these songs anywhere else!
I'm not sure I even looked at the other songs before my credit card was being swiped by the good folks at Amazon!!
So, yeah, again, I bought on impulse but I damn sure don't regret it!! In fact, I'd suggest we embrace the "ME, ME, ME" decade just once more and "BUY, BUY, BUY" this set.
If you went to high school in the 80's like I did, simply put, this will bring back some great memories.
(Unless, of course, your high school years sucked. To which, I say, "That's too bad. I'm sorry for you.")
Either way, just admit that the 80's were a great time for music and pastel suits and thin leather ties.........(chicks dig the thin tie still, right? Right? Anybody? Can I get a witness?)
Where's Don Johnson when I need him?
Oh, here he is....Disc 6, Song 19!

4 out of 5 stars Time Warp.......2007-05-23

I guess only someone who was a teen or 20something could really appreciate
this set. The 80s were my high school and college years and I was
certainly guilty of listening to the radio .... This set is awesome and
is really made indispensable with the booklet. My only gripe lies with
the artists that were huge in the 80s, but evidently could not be licensed
for this set....Notably U2, REM, Hoodoo Gurus, Wall of Voodoo, etc

3 out of 5 stars Shut up!.......2007-03-04

Like, for sure, half of it is like totally major gross-out, but the other half is like bitchin! Just shut up already and buy it!

2 out of 5 stars missing tracks.......2007-02-26

lots of great 80's music available in these cds, but missing one of the greatest groups of the decade...Wham!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD Set!.......2007-01-18

I purchased this set for my 13 year old daughter. It seems the 80's are making a big comeback. She loves it! I love it, too!! It has all the most popular songs from the 80's plus a few you do not hear anywhere now. It's great! It brings back a lot of memories, GOOD TIMES!!

4 out of 5 stars Great raw soul!.......2007-01-12

We've all heard enough Sly, PFunk, etc. Not that there's anything wrong with that...THEY ROCK. But, it's nice to know that there were so many funky people that didn't get on the Top 40. This CD compilation has a ton of very cool stuff. It's worth owning just for the Supersouls' Loaded To The Gills(though I wish I could hear the whole thing! A few of these tracks are edited, but not in a bad way). Put it on and DANCE.

5 out of 5 stars An explosive missile to the past..........2006-06-17

Wow. I just picked this up, yesterday. This s__t is so hip! Collects many obscurites from around the country, all high energy, smokin' funk. You dig funk at all, this collection rules!

5 out of 5 stars So, so hot.......2006-04-28

A HUGE thank you to the people who rated this album. It is gold.
For non-funk-o-philes, which I am, all I can say is: imagine all of your favourite 70s shows and then amplify the theme songs by about 1000, and you'll get close to where this little beauty will take you.
I have bought a fair bit of stuff off Amazon, and this is the first CD that I really reckoned everyone else should know about.
Whoever it was that wrote that "if you want to pay a fistfull of bucks for funk" list knows what they are about. I have played this thing thrice over and it just gets better.
Do yourself a favour, buy it, whack it on your headphones and wander the city Shaft-style ... people will puzzle about your slightly odd head gyrations while you're cruising the vege aisle, but that's because they don't know better yet.
Don't ask me to describe the choons, I can't, all you need to know is that your life is lesser without them.

5 out of 5 stars If this ain't funky enough for you..........2006-02-03

If this 80 minute power house of rare and raw late 60s early 70s funk doesn't do something for you, something is wrong... It is the type of stuff that some funk searching DJs wet their pants for and do nothing but dream of... that one rare obscure ultra funky find that NO ONE ELSE has. Well, now this label has reissued it... can't say how long it will remain in print, but I can tell you this, unless you happen to be an expert of expert collector on EXTREMELY rare funk, odds are this collection is going to be a gem that will remind you that no, you haven't heard it all... and maybe more juice like this is hiding in yet other vaults waiting to surface!!!

Begining in the nasty James Brown "Mother Popcorn" era, the groups also reflect the influences of other funky soul powerhouses from the era including Archie Bell and The Drells, Dyke and the Blazers - - and of course the JBs themselves and the emerging Memphis sound. "Down Home" Funky drumming, driving bass, biting bluesy syncopated rhythm guitar and yes, quite a few Hammond organs epitomize the sound. Tunes range from horn driven instrumentals to hard core soul shouting.

Surprises include a funky James Brown Apollo melody as well as super funky version of War's SLIPPING INTO DARKNESS that actually outfunks the original ! My favorite includes the Lyn Collins sounding ultra bumpin' masterpiece DON'T GO, by the Aristocrats long before they were a really dirty joke...There's also a bit of ultra funky psychadelic soul in the form of the Ebony Rhythm Band and The Soul Seven. Finally its topped off with a real cool wa wa driven/early Kool and the Gang sounding STREET SCENE and a nice slick sounding version of SCORPIO.

All in all this is some ultra rare groove juice from the vaults that you definitely don't want to let pass you by !

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening for Every Music Fan!!!.......2006-01-09

A treasure! A jem! The title says it all! Heavy funk rarities is an absolute must have purchase and listen to any one who: likes to party, is a musician, music historian or anyone who is just a plain old music fan. Really cool beats and melodies that you could dance, sing and hum to all day long!

Will Smith makes a welcome left turn from his recent Hollywood McAction Film past in director Andy Tennant's romantic comedy. He is also the film's executive soundtrack producer, taking the opportunity to pay tribute to the R&B and soul that initially influenced his own musical career, as well as showcase its contemporary echoes. Vintage tracks represent Motown (the Temptations' classic "I Can't Get Next to You") and Philly (The O'Jays "Love Train") soul well, while the Caribbean rhythms of Jimmy Cliff's "You Can Get It," Martha Reeves' "It's Easy to Fall in Love" and Earth, Wind & Fire's pop-inflected "Reasons" testify to the old school's rich diversity. John Legend's new cover of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" doesn't add much to the original, but other new cuts like the hip-hop/soul fusion of Heavy D and the Boyz' "Now That We Found Love," EW&F's collaboration with Kelly Rowland and Sleepy Brown ("This Is How I Feel") and Amerie's funk-charged "I Thing" offer up a tasty modern R&B groove. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Hitch..........2007-02-15

I'll be honest, I bought this disc for Amerie's "1 thing." I don't know why, but at the time, I had to have it (and even bidded on ebay for a British CD-Single! Thankfully, I lost, as it went for $26US!!) The rest of the disc is "okay." Three stars for the disc. Five stars for Amerie's "1 Thing."

5 out of 5 stars Found the club song.......2006-09-29

Like others, I went looking for the song from the club...I think this is it: Everthing but the girl: Five Fathoms, from the cd Temperamental. This song, gets the 5 stars. Good stuff.

2 out of 5 stars Club Song.......2006-08-30

I am also trying to figure out what song was playing in the club... I thought it was "Everything but the Girl" also or "Sade"... I have had no luck...

1 out of 5 stars need title of song.......2006-08-09

does anyone know the title or artist or both of the song that was playing in the background when wil approached eva in the club? sounds like "everything but the girl" but i'm not sure. the soundtrack doesn't have it...help! thanks

2 out of 5 stars Not the movie.......2006-03-22

I was very disappointed that the songs on this album were not a comprehensive list of the songs that I saw in the movie. It's a compilation of mediocre songs. Big disappointment.

An excellent introduction for one of the bands that set the standard for heavy metal. We Sold Our Soul for Rock & Roll features the original lineup of Black Sabbath, including Ozzy Osbourne on vocals; the songs are selected from the band's recordings up through 1975. The album features several classic songs, several of which are still on rock radio play lists: "Paranoid," "War Pigs," "Iron Man," and the ballad "Changes." There's also the humorous "Fairies Wear Boots," the vaguely psychedelic "Am I Going Insane," and the dark, macabre "Black Sabbath" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath." Most Sabbath fans will already have the albums from which the songs on this collection are taken. However, for the listener new to Sabbath, it's the perfect place to start. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars If you've only got room for one Sab album, make it this one!.......2007-06-16

This is all the Black Sabbath I own. Yeah, I've heard the classic Paranoid at a friend's house and liked it, but I decided to go with this instead because I wanted the basics outside of Paranoid. And man, did I get 'em! 14 classic Ozzy tracks, and 13 are great - my favorites are Iron Man - with one of the best introductions ever (thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... thump... DOO DOO... I AM IRON MAN!) and that pentatonic riff we all know so well (six minutes of head-banging goodness), the thrasher Paranoid; slow-burning antiwar epic War Pigs (Even if it commits the cardinal sin of rhyming by rhyming "masses" with "masses"), the acoustic/electric, Led Zeppelin-like Sabbath Bloody Sabbath; the infamous band title track, which may have a better intro than even Iron Man (the rainfall, the churchbells, the tritone - I'll never hear AC/DC's totally awesome Hells Bells the same way again), the bluesy Wizard, pot ode Sweet Leaf (with my favorite Sab riff ever), and the resident simple headbangers Tomorrow's Dream and NIB.
But what the hell is Changes? No more sensitive piano ballads for Sab, the DEFINITIVE heavy metal band out of the "Big Three" of early metal (the others being Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin). Zeppelin doesn't win the award, because Jimmy Page's guitar tone can't touch Tony Iommi's, and in truth, I find Deep Purple too boring to be definitive anything. And while I personally prefer Zeppelin, who overcomes their Achilles heel (Robert Plant, who sings like he swallowed something and can't write a decent set of lyrics when he isn't plagarizing Willie Dixon, AKA the best American composer EVER) with their pure instrumental skill, I very much dig Sab. They aren't your typical testosterone-laden metal band - their lyrics touch on Satanism, drug addiction, war, the occult, horror, sci-fi, all kinds of fun stuff. The lyrics sometimes read as stupid - there wasn't exactly a Bob Dylan in this group - but the way Ozzy delivers them, in that infamous monotone, is perfect. And as I said before, nobody can match Iommi's perfect tone.
One more thing I'd like to point out is the album's title. "We sold our SOUL for Rock 'n' Roll". Great concept, yeah, but note the funny little grammar violation - that implies that the group all shared a soul, and they agreed they'd sell it for rock and roll. I mean, Ozzy never struck me as that bright or anything, but come ON! Oh well, a minor quibble. So even though Changes sucks, this should be in any rocker's collection. Throw up those devil horns and ROCK OUT!

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2007-06-10

Lots of great material here. The only major issue is that you've probably heard many of these songs on classic rock radio a million times. They're still great songs, though. The album comes in at just over 74 minutes, so you're getting a whole lotta sabbath here. This is probably a great disc to buy for someone who enjoys Sabbath, but has never bought any of their CD's (e.g., maybe they only own stuff on tape or vinyl).

5 out of 5 stars We Sold Our Soul............2006-10-15

This is a compilation album that covers the original Ozzy years of the band up through the "Sabotage album. The original vinyl version was a 2 record set, that has been reduced to a single disc for CD. Two tracks were omitted on the CD version. This is a cool collection and includes some of the band's all time best stuff. About half of the "Paranoid" album is represented here along with "Black Sabbath" and "The Wizard" from their first one. Every song her is a classic including two of my all time favorite Sabbath tracks "Children Of The Grave" and "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". The ballad "Changes" is a bit of a change of pace for the band (it was recently re-recorded as a duet between Ozzy and Kelly Osborne). One of the things that I find interesting and is a bit of the sign of the times when these tracks were recorded in the early 70's, is that there are no less than 3 tracks on this collection that are basically love songs devoted to drugs. "Fairies Wear Boots" is about acid, "Sweet Leaf" Marijuana, and "Snowblind" cocaine. The album closes with another Sabbath classic "N.I.B." (Nativity In Black). In more recent years there have been Sabbath compilations released that cover significantly more ground than this one, so if you are just looking to get into the band I would probably recommend one of those, but for the time this one was released it was a very nice collection indeed.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Metal Legacy.......2006-07-17

This is where modern metal began. This "best of" CD captures the best of the Ozzy-era Sabbath and includes the band's biggest hits. A great "starter kit" for metal fans.

Top Tracks: "Paranoid", "War Pigs", "Iron Man", "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath"

3 out of 5 stars Great CD...but.......2006-04-29

I used to own the double-album. Remember vinyl albums? Well the double album version had more songs than the CD so I'm giving it 3 stars even though all the songs deserve 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars great funk.......2007-03-24

just a purely great album of funk, and some of the best bass work you will ever hear.
One star loss due to too much talking and filler between songs.

3 out of 5 stars Get infected........2006-11-20

I'm not sure if one would call this a side-project, or supergroup, but it's a good listen. Members are from other bands such as Suicidal Tendencies, Metallica, and Jane's Addiction among others. To my ears, this basically sounds like a funkier version of Suicidal. I'd say it's a must listen for ST fans. Call it....funk-rock. It a bass slappin', drum poundin', yelling good time. Get it if you see it, as it's out of print at the moment.

4 out of 5 stars Funkalicious and fun.......2005-06-27

What happens when you take the bass virtuosity of Rob Trujillo (ex-Suicidal Tendencies, later joined Metallica), the vocal stylings of Mike Muir (Suicidal Tendencies), multiple guest drummers (including Stephen Perkins of Porno For Pyros and studio drummer Josh Freese of Vandals and A Perfect Circle fame), and even more guest guitarists and miscellaneous instrumentalists, throw them into a blender on the 'puree' setting with a gallon of funk and a few quarts of punk/metal?

You get Infectious Grooves.

It's funky, it's rocking. It makes you dance and it makes you bang your head. That's what Infectious Grooves is all about.. groovin' and rockin'.

The strongest element of the album, naturally, is the incredible bass work of one Rob Trujillo. Rob shows his true colors on this album, always laying down the solid groove and occasionally stepping outside of the pocket to display incredible work with both the left and right hands. The guest guitarists on the album are all of a high level of musicianship. The title track has an incredibly sick-sounding guitar solo that is usually only heard amongst the likes of talent such as Steve Vai or John Petrucci.

The only downfall of the album is that Mike Muir has never been what I would consider a "good vocalist". He is, however, very fitting to the Infectious Grooves sound. The songs are all humorous, both musically and lyrically. Muir does a great job of keeping you laughing, whether it is his classic funk "Hey hey hey's" or the ridiculous lyrics ("You lie.. and yo breath stank.. smells just like.. a septic tank.") The skits, may I add, are amusing the first time around but the novelty quickly wears off. I was also a bit irked that the album ended with a skit track as opposed to an actual song.

If you like funk and are open to experimentation, I highly recommend this album. Being an individual who has an undying love for both funk and metal, this album is extremely appealing to me.

I reiterate.. HIGHLY recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A lost gem in my collection.......2003-12-19

I'll make this short and sweet: GET IT, IT'S ONLY $4.00!! Being a big fan of Suicidal at the time, I've had this since it came out in 1991. I hadn't listened to it for years, even though I knew it was really good. Well, today I resurrected it, and holy moly it's really good. Super bass funkiness, catchy hooks, addictive riffs, sing-a-long refrains...maybe that doesn't sound good but it really is! And funny too. Like I said, this is a lost gem in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Grooooooooooovy.......2002-04-18

Uauuuu... that's funky man! Funk with heavy riffs. Funny and mostly: groovy!!!!
In my opinion Sarssipius Ark's is better (the sound quality and mix is better).
Try to hear "Feed the monkey" or "Stop funk'n with my head". Yeah!! I like it so much!!!!!
I think all Infetious Grooves CDs are excellent. Buy them if you like funk, metal distortion & riffs and a "bass in your face" sound.

Few blues artists have achieved as much crossover success as Robert Cray. Though it's not infrequent for blues purists to proclaim a dislike for his work, his skillful blend of blues, R&B, and soul has undeniable appeal. Heavy Picks is the first retrospective of Cray's recording career, tracing the route from his early, semi-independent recordings through his final dates for Mercury Records. The collection includes some of Cray's best material, including "Smoking Gun," "Playin' in the Dirt," and "Bad Influence," which testify to his strengths as a songwriter. One of the few blues musicians to have videos on MTV, Cray's style has a consistency that's helped ensure his longevity in the pop and blues arenas. At 14 tracks, Heavy Picks is also a nonintimidating introduction for newer fans. --Genevieve Williams

4 out of 5 stars Robert Cray Appreciation.......2007-06-11

If you know Robert Cray's work, you will totally appreciate the selection of tracks that make up this compilation since every song is like mortar to the previous albums or CD's they were included in originally. If you don't have any of his previous CD's in your collection, this is one that will span much of his career.

5 out of 5 stars Robert Cray Band.......2007-04-10

To be honest, I had never heard of Robert Cray before. On March 5, we attended an Eric Clapton concert here in Oklahoma City in which Robert Cray did the opening act.

I was very impressed with Mr Cray and his music, thats why I bought the CD and I intend to buy more.

Amazon took my order and my CD was shipped and arrived in 3 or 4 days.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-03-23

It was an amazing performance. Over 100 people stood for 1/1/2 hours
rocking to his music. He also has a great back-up band.

Cray is a stroy teller and a maginificent guitar player with a unique sound. my favourite songs are phone booth and i was warned but they are all good ! the solos are the best part and you can find one or two in every song.
everyone who loves blues, guitars and great molodies will love this CD. don't miss it !

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars Dreams and Soul Traveling.......2007-02-16

Love Dreams by that master of funk Gary Wilson.....

Soul Traveling on volume two by Gary buzzes the breeze!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Like This.......2007-01-22

Descriptors of the tracks from these artists:
Oh No - a cool breeze with a phat beat; reminiscing
Guilty Simpson - tough; regarding the daily struggle
Madlib - groovy; scratchy mcscratch; can you say "layed back, but biting, battle rap?"
Koushik - tranceish; far more rhythmic than trance and I like it
J Dilla (RIP) - this song makes me feel that music is my life and J Dilla is the sensei on my path to enlightenment of music
James Pants - crazy and I like it; "clap your hands, stomp your feet"; catchy
MadVillain - as usual MadVillain is mysterious, poetic, Doomish, Libish (I just made those words up for this review)
Georgia Anne Muldrow - simply a joy; couldn't have been titled better
MED - no more reminiscing, we're in the here and now; what does it take to be a quality rapper, let's find out
Dudley Perkins - Dudley is the most unique vocal artist of our day; a little of all the classic singers r&b and soul and of course a dash of contemporary street knowledge and reverence
Percee P, Quasimoto - Lord Quas goes with anyone, but Percee compliments his vocal most; heart of the battle
Jaylib - i think this and the first Dilla track stand out as the most transcendent on the album; i hear the sirens and I love it
J-Rocc - who wants drama? not me; i feel like i'm on a car chase with this track; can't tell if i'm following or leading?
Roc "C" - i've always had a special place in my heart for perseverance songs; these are the steps and the trip ups that make life worth living
Gary Wilson - bicca-ch bicca-ch; 70's groove at it's finest; great song to ufck to ;)
Pure Essence - the mothership has not left the building; very cosmic; these tracks are titled well
Aloe Blacc - very African rhythms; what direction will we take next?
Baron Zen - Peanut Butter Wolf can take any genre and make it his own; droning lyrics; works with the track
Young Jazz Rebels - so glad to have these eclectic tracks on an [adult swim] album;that Stones Throw is linked to artists like this is amazing; soft and emotional drumming; seemingly a drum circle and flute

Overall Rating Through the Roof!

3 out of 5 stars It's a compilation--you gotta take the good with the bad.......2007-01-04

The last third of 'Chrome Children' leaves a bit to be desired, but c'mon. It's a compilation--you gotta take the good with the bad and search out the gems.

Far as I'm concerned, there are plenty of those here, from Oh No's frantic-elevator-music 'Oh Zone' to Madlib's woozy-nasal 'Take It Back,' where J. Dilla crafts a beat that could easily have been an outtake from the latest Quasimoto album. Koushik's 'None in Mind' has a nice Bollywood/Blaxploitation vibe, and James Pants' 'Do a Couple of Things' just goes the straight blaxploitation route.

Roc C puts down a few solid verses on the Oh No-produced 'Movin,' MED does the same over Madlib's 'All I Know,' and 'Monkey Suite' should have just about everyone salivating for the next Madvillain album.

I'm not sure what the last few songs are all about, though. I mean, they're alright, but I'm not sure why they're on this record. They don't really fit with the first 14 songs. But oh well. I'll take 'em.

The true appeal of this for me was the companion DVD, which features performances at a Stones Throw show in Texas from MED, Percee P, Madlib and MF Doom. Doom's performance of 'Rhymes Like Dimes' alone is worth the price of admission.

And, of course, Guilty Simpson's 'Clap Your Hands,' on the CD, has the best one-liner I've heard in a while: 'I don't care who y'all rollin' with/'Cause a real ***** don't need sponsorship.'

2 out of 5 stars I won't do what ya tell me!.......2007-06-01

It's idiotic that they accuse Rage Against the Machine of being hypocrites. How else is Rage going to get their message out there? Just like Morello said they could play to empty squats, but they need to be able to show people whats up. People need to wake up and i guess being endorsed by SONY so that later on, getting your message out could pay off was the idea Rage had. I say Infectious Groves' ideas blow, but the music isn't half bad.

5 out of 5 stars A drummers perspective.......2005-06-13

If you like great drummers add Brooks Wackerman to the list.

High energy, heavy speed metal, double bass, funk. It doesn't get any better than what Brooks does here. He is fluid with great all around technique. Guess it runs in the family. If you are drummer try playing along to this CD! I wish you luck.

5 out of 5 stars Good God..........2005-04-23

I recently pulled this out of my 1000+ collection because I wanted something different than the usual crap that comes out now days. I loved this band back in the day, and I have to say that I still find this freaking CD amazing today. It is great music...period. If you don't have this, you should be ashamed of yourself...pick it up immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Super Dooper.......2000-10-10

I give out a lot of five star reviews mostly because I only take the time to review the best stuff. This album is wonderful. Though I like the new album Mas Burracho slightly better, It wasn't a large enough gap to drop a star. Everything this band does is great. Though they can in some ways be compared to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Infectious Grooves have a harder edge and a distinct sound. Ignore the bad comments about this one! I happen to be a musician and a lover of old soul, latin, classic rock, jazz, etc. And I'll tell you right now these guys are GOOD! "Die like a Pig" and "Violent and Funky" are my favorite tracks. Bass player Robert Trujillo tears it up like you can't believe!

5 out of 5 stars yep!! We are Family!!!.......2000-08-14
