With her apple-cheeked smile and sun-bleached hair, Texas's Terri Hendrix could pass for the fourth member of the Dixie Chicks--that is, if she'd dab on a little make-up and change into something other than overalls. The fact that Hendrix's producer and multi-instrumentalist musical partner, Lloyd Maines, is the father of Chick-singer Natalie Maines makes such associations inevitable. But Hendrix's folk-pop sound--slow-roasted over the late-night fires of the Kerrville Folk Festival--has more in common with the DIY ethic of Ani DiFranco than anything concocted in a Nashville studio. Places in Between, her fourth self-released album, features Maines and a band of Austin's finest playing a darker and more reflective program than Hendrix's previous work, Wilory Farm. In the new album's best song, "Fair," she observes that "nothin' is fair but the weather." But upbeat originals like the title track and "My Own Place" reveal a plucky spirit that requires no cosmetic enhancement to shine brightly. --Rick Mitchell

Two very talented individual guitarists; one classically trained and very clean the other from progressive rock roots combine to produce a virtuoso performance

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful combination.......2007-02-07

This CD is a splendid (and long - about 1 hr) way to spend some time listening to one great classical and one modern guitarist. Neither repetitive nor too esoteric, nor ego driven. Top class music.

5 out of 5 stars A more mature Terri--but still a blast.......2001-05-19

Hendrix is a gem. She's a fine writer backed by a first-rate band, and on this album she's more reflective, as the album's cover indicates. It's a more personal glimpse, more private. But that's not to say she's still not lots of fun too. A couple of these tunes really rock (the title tune, for example), and cuts like "Invisible Girl" and "My Own Place" are terrific upbeat numbers, and they showcase Hendrix's improved instrumental abilities (she's working hard to be a better player, obviously). As with her previous releases, you get to experience a variety of styles here, from folk to rock to bluegrass--and it's all done well. "Eagles," a song she recorded on her first CD, "Two Dollar Shoes," is terrific here. All three of her previous CDs are well worth owning: there's not a disappointing moment anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars best pick on my wish list.......2001-02-24

I finally bought this CD for myself a year after I put it on my wish list (gotta keep track of all those desires, you know), and although I couldn't initially remember why I wanted to get this music, once I got it, I congratulated myself a million times over. What I should be doing, however, is writing fan mail to Terri Hendrix. Wow! She's a dynamo. Her lyrics are smart, funny, thoughtful, even danceable in places. Good Times Van and My Own Place are two of my current favorites, and in fact I believe it was My Own Place that I heard on folk radio up in Maine with the mention that it had won album of the year in some category that led me to hunt it down and eventually purchase it.

I'd love to see Terri Hendrix live--her songs give some of the flavor of the energy she must have with an audience. But as second best buy this CD...out of all of the music I've purchased this year, this one is one of the ones I'm the most pleased about.

5 out of 5 stars Best Kept Secret In Texas.......2000-08-25

What can you say about an album that you listen to over and over and over and it just keeps getting better.

Terri's superb voice is versatile and addictive. Her songs make you feel like you really aren't alone in the world.

Buy this - you can't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars My Place...Your Place..."Places In Between".......2000-06-22

I first saw Terri Hendrix in 1994 at a small Italian restaurant in San Antonio, Texas. She sat on a "stool too small" (to borrow lyrics from her first release, "Two Dollar Shoes"), flashed her million-watt smile, and wowed me with her angelic voice. The fact that she picked a mean guitar was icing on the cake. I was hooked and have eagerly followed her career ever since. I've seen her in every sort of venue and in every sort of mood. She is one of a kind.

After her third release "Terri Hendrix Live," I greatly anticipated a studio release. She has not disappointed me. "Places In Between" is a superb album and showcases Terri's strengths. From the semi-autobiographical title track to the rollicking "My Own Place"; from the bluesy "Goodtime Van" to the effervescent "Invisible Girl," Terri manages to bring a smile to my face on almost every song.

As with her previous studio releases, she has also re-recorded tracks from her first album ("Eagles" and "Moon On The Water").

Her band is the same as the "Live" release and is even tighter on "Places."

Terri's talent continues to shine and with this release, I am assured that she will reach even more people with her superior songwriting abilities and musicianship.

This CD is one of very few that is permanently in my CD changer.

Try it....you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars My first great listening experience of the new year.......2005-01-08

Eyvind Kang and Tucker Martine have known each other for quite a while. In light of the spectacular music they make on this remarkable disc, the only question is this: Why did it take them so long to record together?

Kang, long a member of Bill Frisell's quartet, has a unique approach to his primary instrument, the violin. Not only does he get an astounding variety of sounds from it, he also has a knack for playing it in a faux-naive way that humanizes its sometimes harsh timbre and imbues it with a warmth and eerie beauty uniquely his. With a handful of outrageous solo discs to his credit, including such weirdness as The Sweetness of Sickness and Theater of Mineral NADEs, he has carved out a niche in contemporary improvised music completely his own.

Tucker Martine, long associated with Wayne Horvitz (see esp. their latest, Mylab), but also the production genius behind artists like Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter, Laura Veirs, Down Pilot, and Sanford Arms, as well as heading up the sound collage project Mount Analog, is fast becoming one of the most in-demand sound-sculptors working in the biz today.

Together they've created one of the most beguiling, intriguing, and just plain weird discs out there. Ranging in styles as diverse as demented pop to outré electronica--and nearly everything in between--Orchestra Dim Bridges presents a constantly shifting soundscape of staggering diversity. Yet, strangely, several unifying threads unite these disparate materials: the lads' propensity for purely gorgeous melodies, a wacky world-percussive sensibility, dreamy, ocean floor/blasted heath moods, and the seamless assimilation and appropriation of the wildest assortment of world musics conceivable.

Anyone taken with some of Frisell's latest projects, Mylab, Dhafer Youssef, Critters Buggin, and Garage a Trois should waste no time in picking this up. Others with big ears will also want to give a listen.

Highest recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Great country CD.......2006-01-16

This CD is one of the best in country music today. Not only is Tony a great singer, he is also a great songwriter. From the upbeat "Bluer Than the Grass" to the soulful "Let Me Be Lonely", you feel every emotion. I loved every song. If you're a fan of country music get this CD, you won't be disappointed.

          5 out of 5 stars Places.......2005-09-21

This is truly country music and the feeling of listening to real country music comes alive. This whole album is worthy of 5 stars. Each song from Thats the Way I Was Raised to Let me Be Lonely are worthy of recognition in the Country Music environment. This album is around the world. I know the military hears it in Iraq and I know they appreciate that kind of music. Tony Ramey is truly a Country Singer and we would like to hear more of him and see more videos. Wvgal Iraq...

5 out of 5 stars Awesome collection of great songs!!!.......2005-02-06

When I first heard Tony Ramey's Watertower Skyline, I was reminded of a pure pleasant side of country music that doesn't really fit into the scheme of the large scale radio clearinghouses that say people don't want to hear more than the same 20 songs played over and over. I was suddenly reminded that there can be fresh thoughtful lyrics and heartfelt sincere performances in country music.

This CD serves as a reminder to everyone who works in country music that there are creative passionate people making music in Nashville and the time they should be front and center is now!

Tony Ramey's lyrics are representative of all of us who see the world through eyes of small town America and adore the values that create everyday people. I'd recommend that all country music executives get this album as a present for themselves so they can remember the value of the whole country music genre for what it has been and what it can be again.

Until then, I'm going to bug local radio stations to death to keep hearing Tony Ramey's great music (especially Watertower Skyline & That's How I Was Raised), and if they won't play it, I'll turn them off!!!

5 out of 5 stars Country music fans, the heart and soul is back!.......2004-11-28

This CD renews my faith in country music by putting the heart and soul back into the song. While the Nashville 'business machine' is busy cranking out meaningless radio candy, Mr. Ramey's CD breathes new life into a music genre that has been severely lacking in real emotion. Each song touches your heart in a way that takes you back to an emotional place you may have been at some point in your life, or makes you long for an emotional place that you have yet to visit. He sings each song with a passion that the country music industry has not heard or felt for many, many years. If you are a `true' country music fan, ya gotta get this one!
