Stretch a Little.......2007-02-07

Ian Tyson is a unique voice in the contemporary music of North America. I have never really understood why he got lost to many when Ian and Sylvia left the scene. The voice, the melodies, the sentiment and the vivid lyrics that capture the lives and times he chronicles in his songs are as good as it gets. Old Corrals and Sagebrush, Eighteen Inches of Rain and I Outgrew the Wagon are remarkable for the life they breath into the story of the North American cowboy; they are woven of one cloth. Lost Herd takes us to a different place musically. Tyson may be heading toward his seventies now, but he is willing to take risks as he continues to sing his stories of love, of loss, of dreams, of heroes and what we learn from them. This is the album I play most often, perhaps because the level of emotion is so rich, so deep, so accessible; the themes so universal in their appeal.

I hope Tyson will continue to venture down varied musical avenues and invite us to share the experience with him. Frankly, I don't know what I will do when he no longers records his songs. They are among the treasures I hold dearest in life.

Lost Herd not one of his best.......2006-03-30

I really like Ian Tyson -- when he's good, he absolutely wonderful. However, I don't want to listen to songs I don't like seven or eight times before I can tolerate them. I want songs that touch my heart and soul first time out. I like real country with steel guitars and fiddles, not the stuff they're calling country now (which certainly isn't country and isn't even good rock and roll). In my opinion, there are two good songs on this CD, La Primara and Elko Blues. If you like Ian Tyson and want some really good songs, try "I Outgrew the Wagon" -- Steeldust Line is such a wonderful 'story' song! The only song I didn't like on this CD was one he didn't write himself! Or try "Cowboyography" -- 'Navajo Rug,' 'Summer Wages,' Fifty Years Ago,' (this song brought tears to my eyes the first 30 times I listened to it -- not because it's too sad, but because it's just so beautiful!) 'Rockies Turn Rose,' Own Heart's Delight,' and more. And "Old Corrals and Sagebrush" is wonderful too. The title song will grab you the first time you hear it. And there are some great traditional oldies on it.
Those are the three CD's I have now that I think are great, much better than "Lost Herd."

TREAT YOURSELF TO A MODERN DAY COWBOY CLASSIC........2005-05-25

It actually took a bit to warm up to this collection of Tysons' music. Other than "somewhere Over the Rainbow", which I really appreciated from the beginning, the songs took a few listenings to really hook me.
The remake of Judy Garlands classic I believe, is a classic in its own right.
I would rate the CD as a "must listen". It has become one of my all time favorites. What stories Tyson can tell of the modern day cowboy life, the highs and lows and everything in between.
Now all I need is the opportunity to catch one of Ian Tyson's live shows. Hopefully he'll head east of Cowboy Country soon.

Unexcelled!.......2002-03-13

Ian Tyson is definitely a "one of a kind" story-teller. His music is not only hauntingly beautiful, and his voice is not only rich and resonant, but the words to his unexcelled music really hit the meaningful targets of the west-- the Cowboy, the Indian and the Terrain. Having grown up in Canada and Alaska, and having met Mr. Tyson a long time ago in Medicine Hat, Alberta, truly, Lost Herd is a masterpiece. Additionally, I have never liked the "worn-out" song: "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," however, you are in for a very unexpected surprise when you hear his performance. Country-western music covers a lot of basis, but much like the incomparable Harry Chapin--America's Storyteller, Mr. Ian Tyson holds that title with honour in Canada as, "Canada's Storyteller."

Worth the effort.......2001-08-06

This one was not as immediately accessible as some of his other albums, but after I'd played it seven or eight times I couldn't remember which tracks I thought were weak. It's got a thoughtful, dreamy quality on several tracks (notably "La Primera") and nobody but Ian Tyson would write a pretty waltz tune about the "Legends of Cutting" -- "Buster and Shorty, Matlock and Don/ Mister Pat, he's still horseback, he's still a-keeping on..." And "Roll On Owyhee" contains the sort of singalong rhythm that makes his music fun as well as intelligent. And the references to roan mares and bay studs remind you that his interest in the west and the cowboy lifestyle are not made up, they're an honest part of the man.

Ian Tyson? "Over the Rainbow"? I wasn't sure what I was going to think of that, but he interprets it as a song, not a "standard," and in the process makes it possible for me to hear it with fresh ears.

The more I hear this album the better I like it.

Review of Lost Heard.......2004-06-08

This is an amazing CD of Ian Tysons. I absolutley love the haunting saxophone in "Summers Gone" and other wonderful ballads. This is my favourite CD and gives a more personal look into Ian's songs, and the soul of cowboy life. This CD is a must have for any Ian Tyson fan and rings with the true sincerity and compassion of all Ian's other recordings.

Least favorite.......2001-06-01

I have listened to Ian Tyson since the Ian and Sylvia days. This is at the bottom of my list. The only song I like is his rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow which I heard at a concert in London, Ontario, Canada. I never thought I would critisize a Ian Tyson CD but this is it. I would like to hear a CD the quality of Cowboyography THE BEST. I would also like to read a Western style novel written by Ian.

Best Album Yet!.......2000-12-03

Ian Tyson has always been a masterful storyteller, bringing the ways of the old west to those of us who have never been fortunate enough to experience it. This album is filled with haunting ballads like "La Primera" and "Blue Mountains of Mexico." And touching glimpses into Tyson's own childhood in songs like "Smuggler's Cove."

Mr. Tyson is an artist who continually provides quality albums, and this album is no different. Utilizing his love of all music, he incorporates a hint of blues this time in songs like "Lost Herd." No one can claim to be a fan of true western music and not own every Ian Tyson album!

If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.

Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.

This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.

Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
