The myth of the American West--lawless lands, resolute heroes--takes on a grave, elegiac quality on this first, and best, collaboration from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. There's little bravado here, just a sense of ticking time, of frontiers lost, cowboys singing their last songs. In the end, Highwayman works because it fuses mythic, serious material with the artists' own legendary personas and well-aged voices. Lesser lights would be lucky to muddle through Jimmy Webb's epic title track; these four cagey desperados make every fantastic image believable. If Chips Moman surrounds them with less than subtle layers of guitars, keyboards, and drums, he does update vintage progressive country in a suitably cosmic but rugged fashion. Romantic legends and production values notwithstanding, it's the tough, wise singing here that's the real draw. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:
Great job for a country supergroup.......2007-07-18
This CD is timeless in many ways. Songs not only talk about country legends (highwaymen and robbers) it deals with current issues (deportation and musicians doing time in rehab).
"Highwayman" is the best cover of Jimmy Webb's ballad I've ever heard; however, I believe Webb still did it best.
"The Last Cowboy Song" is a tribute to an era that thankfully, men like these have kept alive in story and song.
"Deportee Song" with its lyrics about illegal aliens, is a strong commentary on the continuing immigration issues.
"Committed to Parkside" details the very harsh reality of musicians who go over the edge on drugs, etc. It's grim, and I can probably only listen to it once.
The only song that I can honestly say was not worth it was their cover of "Against the Wind." For an old-line Seger fan, this particular style of rendition just didn't work.
Every single song is good and compelling. It's a very worthwhile CD to add to your collection, particularly at this price.
Good Start.......2007-06-02
If I had to rate the three "Highwaymen" albums this would be #3. The second would be first and the third second.
I am a big fan of all the artists that is why I rated this three stars.

Modern-Day Classic.......2007-01-22
4 icons of late 20th century American music who did things their way, and who embraced the outlaw mindframe to the benefit of their listeners, got together to create one for the ages.
The Last Cowboy Song is my favorite track. The music is evocative of days gone by, music that you might hear in an old western movie. Another piece of America lost, indeed.

Great Recording/Very Overlooked.......2004-05-06
But on the other hand, this cd features some of the best, if not the best vocals Waylon Jennings has ever put on record. Johnny Cash does one of the best performances of his post Columbia Records days on "Anthem '84 and Living Legend." There is the towering Peformance on "Born And Raised in Black and White" that should have gotten them the "Vocal Event" award at the 1991 CMA awards (and was played as their nomination was announced).
This is a very solid release, although a bit rushed. But only these men could rush and make something so good. These men at their worst are 100 times better than most "artists" at their best.
Four great singers equals one heck of a CD........1998-06-18

Reviewing the Highwaymen.......2007-01-10
The original Michael Row Your Boat Ashore and some competent but second string folk.......2006-04-28
performed the rare trick of sounding extremely old and traditional. That
track, and 23 more, are present here. There are a few interesting stones to
unturn, including an early pop version of "Big Rock Candy Mountain" and a
cover of "The First Time (Ever I Saw Your Face)" that predated Roberta
Flack's hit by nearly a decade. But overall, this is rather tame, unexciting
folk ensemble stuff, albeit reasonably well sung and arranged. They're the
biggest musical thing to ever come out of Wesleyan University, and the
Monkees ripped off their logo, but you probably don't need to know more than
that, unless you've already dug pretty deep into the early '60's folk scene.
Real not Manufactured.......2006-03-26
Not like today were "POP" it is created in the studio with countless overdubbing then marketed by mass media hype and awful lip sinking...YUK!
But! There is still great music being made everyday.
We just have to be aware of all the Roots, Grassroots, or what ever you want to call it, going on around the world...
"Thank Humankind for the Internet! Keep on Singin' & Pickin'."
Terrific collection of memorable songs.......2003-04-08
Also: the liner notes are fabulous!
I highly recommend this CD!
Great folk music from the early sixties.......2002-09-14
These original Highwaymen are best remebered for Michael row the boat ashore (sometimes just titled Michael), a number one hit in Britain, America and other countries around the world, which begins this set. Cotton fields, originally written by Leadbelly, was a top twenty hit for the Highwaymen, though others have also charted with this song, including the Beach boys. Another famous song is The first time ever I saw your face, a massive seventies hit for Roberta Flack. It was written by folk singer Ewan MacColl about Peggy Seeger who later became his wife. The version here is very folky, true to the original.
There are several other well known songs here, including Big rock candy mountain and The gypsy rover. Even the obscure songs here are worth hearing. The general feel of the album is easy-going but upbeat - the sort of album that you can play as background music, but has plenty to offer if you give it dedicated attention. In particular, there is their very amusing song, titled Number one, about themselves. It shows that having a number one record will get you a lot of attention but doesn't guarantee further success.
Many of the tracks here are more interesting than Michael - if you like sixties folk music, the Highwaymen are well worth a listen.

Don Was, the producer who transformed Bonnie Raitt from cult hero to pop star, tried to jump-start the stalled careers of Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings by producing their recent albums, Across the Borderline and Waymore's Blues (Part II), respectively. This resulted in two artistic triumphs but no hits. That didn't deter Nelson and Jennings from hiring Was to produce their album with Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson as the Highwaymen. The Road Goes on Forever is easily the best of the three Highwaymen albums, even if changing radio tastes will probably doom it to the poorest sales of the three. The two earlier releases, 1985's Highwaymen and 1990's Highwaymen 2, were thrown together as if the sheer star power of the four singers could carry the project. Both albums had their exciting moments when everything clicked but both also had a lot of filler. By contrast, Was approached the new recording as if every song and every arrangement had to be good enough to be a single. He picked one obscure but terrific composition from each of the four singers and supplemented them with equally strong material from four of Texas's best songwriters--Steve Earle, Billy Joe Shaver, Robert Earl Keen Jr., and Stephen Bruton. Nelson's harmonica ace Mickey Raphael and Kristofferson's singing buddy Billy Swan are joined by top L.A. session pros like keyboardist Benmont Tench and drummer Kenny Aronoff to create a sound that has the twangy picking of old-fashioned country and the fat bottom of modern pop. The result is an album with everything: first-rate material, grade-A playing, and inimitable singing. The thread that ties Nelson, Jennings, Cash, and Kristofferson together is the crustiness of their voices (a honey-voiced singer like George Jones or Don Gibson would seem out of place in this crowd); when they sing Shaver's "(I'm Going To) Live Forever," they sound as if they're more than halfway there. The Highwaymen are so naturally hard-bitten and world-weary that they can slip a little sentiment into a song without spoiling it. They use this to great advantage on the album's two great outlaw songs, Earle's "The Devil's Right Hand" and Keen's title tune; the gruff tales of violence lead up to a sobering admission of the price paid for such a life. That same gruffness allows the Highwaymen to sing two religious meditations, Jennings's "I Do Believe" and Cash's "Death and Hell," without once sounding sanctimonious. --Geoffrey Himes This 10th anniversary limited edition includes a DVD containing the music video for "It Is What It Is" and a documentary, Live Forever: In the Studio with the Highwaymen.Customer Reviews:

An Excellent Sample of The Highwayman Recordings.......2003-07-15
What I like about this collection is the way it samples the first two Highwayman discs. It gives you the best tracks off of each albums.
Buying this album is a great way to see if you like what these 4 country veterans have to offer.
The title track is a true classic! I can just picture the four spirits of these characters out on the edge of eternity singing this cosmic cowboy tune.
I also love the song, "Desperados Waiting for a Train". It is a sad song full of longing. I love the way these guys seem to reminisce about days gone by. They are also tied to larger themes like loyalty, patriotism and history.
This album is very entertaining and full of great tunes!

+1/2 -- Misproduced shoulda-been cap to supergroup's catalog.......2006-01-06
This tenth-anniversary reissue's must-buy value is derived from the five acoustic demo bonus tracks. Listening to the legends audition songs for their compadres gives one an inkling of the album that could've been. "Live Forever" finds Cash tapping his foot as Nelson picks along to find his part, and Jennings' "I Ain't Song" is interrupted by Kristofferson's gut-busting laugh as the former sing-speaks "I ain't old and I ain't bitter, and I ain't mad at anyone." Kristofferson bangs out "Closer to the Bone" on his guitar as Cash's baritone resonates underneath, and Nelson turns "Pick up the Tempo" into a singalong. There's magic in these interpersonal relationships, it just didn't turn up on all the studio tracks. 3 stars for the original album, but an extra half-star for the bonus tracks. Last of three great albums.......2005-04-13
Most of the songs here are covers, often of songs that one or other of the members had written recorded as a solo artist. The set opens with a Steve Earle song, The devil's right hand, which gets the album off to a great start. I do believe (written by Waylon), End of understanding (written by Willie), Death and Hell (written by Johnny and June) and Here comes that rainbow again (written by Kris) ensure that all the members of the Highwaymen get a share of the songwriting royalties as well as the recording royalties.
Elvis once recorded True love travels on a gravel ro0ad (a Dallas Frazier song), but it's not one of his famous recordings. I like his version but I also like the Highwaymen's version. Billie Joe Shaver, who provided Waylon with most of the songs for one of his classic albums (Honky tonk heroes), wrote Live forever. Kevin Welch, who established himself as a songwriter long before making it as a singer, wrote Everyone gets crazy. Stephen Bruton wrote one song (Waiting for a long time) and co-wrote another (It is what it is). Robert Earl Keen, who eventually got the chance to record his own music, contributed the title track.
There are no real surprises here - you know who Johnny, Willie, Waylon and Kris are, you know the kind of music they record and you'll find it here. All four singers have recorded many more important albums than this but if you've already got their important music and still want more, you'll enjoy this album.
another winner.......2004-09-28
Four great singer/songwriters, one amazing album........2004-06-12
"The Road Goes On Forever" is a great album, as you might expect. I would've given it five stars, had more of the guys' own material been present. As is, Waylon sings his moving "I Do Believe," Willie romps through "The End of Understanding," Cash braves his haunting "Death and Hell", and Kristofferson sings of redemption and human kindness in "Here Comes That Rainbow Again."
The other songs, too, are of top notch quality--don't get me wrong about that. "It Is What It Is" had to've been written especially for these guys to sing; Steve Earle's superb "The Devil's Right Hand" is given a new--but respectful--arrangement; "Live Forever" and "Everyone Gets Crazy" have a reminiscent quality that is as moving as it is listenable.
"The Road Goes On Forever" combines four of music's best--the Big Four, we shall call them--and features some of their best performances. Though Cash and Waylon have passed on, this and other Highwaymen albums, shows that although they were great on their own, they were something special when they got together with their two good friends, Willie and Kristofferson. The Highwaymen will never be again, sadly (at least not in this original lineup; I don't care who gets together to take their place), but this album is a testament to their creativity and lasting influence on both each other and the music industry in general.

This CD even has the original album covers and liner notes. A must-have for any folk music fan!
The two albums from the heyday of the Highwaymen.......2003-04-01
The group's second album, "Standing Room Only!" was released in 1962 and had a couple of hits with "The Gypsy Rover" and "Cotton Fields," a forgotten song written by the legendary Leadbelly that was supposed to be the B-side of a single. Add to those memorable songs some more great tracks, including "Black Eyed Susie" and "Pollerita," and you can see why the Highwaymen were a defining group in the folk scene of the early Sixties.
The Highwaymen sang traditional songs and ballads with a spirited harmony, and their reduced place in the history of the revival of American folk music is due simply to their preference to entertain audiences rather than engage in consciousness-raising. Consequently, they fall into the Kingston Trio, New Christie Minstrels, et al. category of folksingers as opposed to the politically oriented singers such Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Phil Ochs. However, once you get passed the idea that you were more likely to see the Highwaymen on "The Ed Sullivan Show" than at a civil rights protest meeting, you can enjoy their work.
Note: The group was originally named the Clansmen, because they sang a lot of Scottish and Irish songs on campus. After they were introduced to the meaning of the term outside of the northeastern part of the United States they changed their name to the Highwaymen, after the Alfred Noyes poem (which was set to music by Loreena McKennitt not too long ago).
This CD is a favorite.......2000-10-09
I was thrilled when this CD came out recently. The quality of reproduction was excellent. It was like having the original two albums. My wife for the first time told me that she missed the music of this group -- we've been married 32 years and I never knew that she was a fan of theirs. I also showed the Spanish songs to a friend from Central America. He told me that "Carni Vallito" is from Bolivia and was sung as well as he's ever heard it. "Nostalgias Tucmans" is from Mexico, and is normally done somewhat faster than in this arrangement. "Pollerita" is from either Venezuela or Peru.
The only thing missing is more music from this group! They recorded several other albums in the 1960's. I sincerely hope that they continue to re-release these albums two at a time as they have done this one, and as the Kingston Trio continue to do.
