If Alan Jackson's 1989 debut album were to be released in a crossover climate, it's debatable if anyone at country radio would give it a shot. "Too country now for country" might be the verdict. With its mournful warning that in the real world "cowboys don't always get the girl," the title ballad was an instant classic. Jackson wrote or cowrote every song on the album but one, including the semi-autobiographical "Chasin' That Neon Rainbow" and "Home." In the liner notes, he referred to George Jones's death-of-country lament "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes." "I don't know if I can fill 'em, but I'd sure like to try 'em on," he wrote. Guess what? They fit.

Very good show which I hadn't heard of..........2007-05-13
I was very into theatre in high school and college and thought I was up on most musicals, but had never heard of this show until recently. It's comprised of three short stories which were adapted into the musical format. The first two stories are tied together very well, although the last seems tacked on. But the songs are catchy and it's fairly easy to figure out what's happening simply by listening to the songs. There are two songs which are tied for my favoritism: "It's a Fish" from Adam and Eve and "You Are Not Real" from Passionella. Check it out.
THE APPLE TREE (1966 ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST).......2007-04-10
IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I WENT TO THE REVIVAL OF THE APPLE TREE ON BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY AND LOVED THE SCORE BUT THERE WASN'T A SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SO I PURCHASED THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!
I still remember these songs after 40 years.......2006-11-05
I saw this show on the stage when it first ran, and have never forgotten it. The key to a good Broadway show is this question: Are you humming the songs when you leave the theatre? In the case of The Apple Tree, the answer is a resounding "Yes." I have been waiting 40 years for this show to be revived, and I have tickets for the revival opening in December at the Roundabout. I hope not to be disappointed, for the trio of Barbara Harris, a very young Alan Alda, and the late Larry Blyden were terrific. The three-part concept can be jarring because just when you're getting into the story, it ends -- but just enjoy the kind of songs they just don't write anymore.
Really 2.5.......2006-07-25
SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. "Lady and Tiger" is short and boring. And "Passionella" is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is nice. Favorite Song: "Its A Fish"
Boring material that you forget very easily.......2006-06-29
According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It's composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, "The Lady or the Tiger?" contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, "Passionella", contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as "three moldy figs". I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

Strong vocals and range; Destined to be a country great.......2003-04-19
I got this CD on sale but after listening to it it's worth full price. One would think that someone out there with that much talent, range, and just plain great singing would sell millions and millions. It's a shame today's pop hasn't kept up with the likes of Alan Jackson. In fact a lot of country isn't all THIS good. I sat for hours listening to "8 CDs of Country Classics" and found some good ones. Then I put in Alan Jackson and god it's really just as good and in some cases better. Were talking listening to likes of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, and Willie Nelson. I'd say add Alan Jackson to the bunch. Like lots of critics have said, he's just great and gets better and better.
First and Best.......2000-09-25
Not counting the Greatest Hits, this is Alan Jackson's best album. I didn't jump on the "Chattahoochee" bandwagon like everyone else did. I already liked Alan Jackson when that song came out and it almost made me a non-fan because country radio ran it right straight into the ground like they do Garth, Shania, Tim, and Faith these days. Here in the Real World offers several fantastic cuts that he has matched only a couple of times since. The title hit, Chasin' That Neon Rainbow, Home, and I'd Love You All Over Again are all good songs, but it's the second single that nails it for me---"Wanted". It's the best song in Mr. Jackson's entire career and it alone would make this album worth buying. All those others I mentioned are just icing on the cake.
Good Music.......1999-11-30
I love Alan Jackson music. My favorite song is Here In The Real World. I think he is an artist with great style.

Thank The Gods.......2003-06-23
Just when you thought us mortals were about to kill ourselves over the so-called country music of the late 80's, early 90's, the gods looked down on us and blessed us with Alan Jackson. Jackson's "Here In The Real World" wass a perfect neo-traditionalist album that told Nashville that you could still write good ol' country music and survive as a commercial entity. Jackson seems to be a man who knows his country music history, and isn't ashamed to show it. "Chasin' that Neon Rainbow" stands out above the rest of this album. It's a testament to what really making country music is all about. "Wanted" ranks high as well. You want to feel sorry for the guy when he sings it. "Here in the Real World" tugs at the heartstrings. "Dog River Blues" is another fine tune on this album. If you want to restore your faith in country music, please take a chance on this album.
Why hasn't anyone reviewed this yet?.......2003-01-29
Why in the world hasn't anyone reviewed this yet? This is the album that started it all. Out of the late eighties 'hat pack' phenomenon, Alan Jackson has managed to stay in the forefront with consistency that Garth Brooks can only envy. Granted, this is a first album, and compared to his later stuff, it is even more obvious, but all artists must start somewhere and this is the best effort I've seen. "Here in the Real World" still makes me cry every time I hear it. "Chasin' that Neon Rainbow" is a classy barroom coming-of-age song, and his up-tempo classics "Ace of Hearts" and "Short Sweet Ride" just make you feel good, especially on your radio with the windows rolled down. A definite for Alan Jackson's fans, and a good place to start for those just getting into his style.

Customer Reviews:
Here in Alan's world.......2005-07-24
Alan Jackson's first CD, "Here in the Real World," was released in late 1989. His record company must have has low expectations after the first single, "Blue Blooded Woman," flopped - it only managed a #45 peak on the country chart. The song is a curious choice for a lead single. It's not one of the strongest tracks by a long shot, although it has a catchy chorus and one great line: "I live my life in Wal-Mart fashion." Arista managed to get things together and released the brilliant title track as the next single.
I have all of Alan's CDs and love many, many of his songs. However, "Here in the Real World" is hands down my favorite. The song is seeped in country sound - whenever I hear it, I immediately picture Alan singing in some tiny honky-tonk bar. The main act has finished, and Alan is sent in to close out the night, singing to a few inebriated patrons. Perhaps my imagination is a bit fertile, but "Here in the Real World" is so incredibly atmospheric. Audiences agreed, and the single shot to #3 in early 1990. The CD became a hit, and Alan was heralded as one of the leaders of the new movement of traditional country singers. "Here in the Real World" is arguably Alan's most country sounding CD, but all the elements that he'd continue to hone in his subsequent releases are here: great writing and singing.
"Wanted" was the next single (peaking at #3) and is another of my favorites. The song starts off as an unassuming ballad before building to the unforgettable chorus. "Chasin' That Neon Rainbow" went to #2 for 2 weeks in late 1990. The song is the kind of barn-burning crowd pleaser that Alan has pulled out of his hat time and time again - think of later hits like "Mercury Blues" or "Tall, Tall Trees." The fourth single became Alan's first #1 country hit - "I'd Love You All Over Again." It's a nice ballad but not as memorable as many of his later ballads. Some of the non-singles are also quite good. I particularly like "Dog River Blues," which is a sort of precursor to his huge 1993 smash, "Chattahoochee." Another terrific song is "Home." When Alan released his first greatest hits collection in 1995, "Home" was included and subsequently released to support the greatest hits CD. The song went to #3, bringing the tally of top 3 hits from "Here in the Real World" to an incredible five.
Some country artists hit their creative and commercial peak with their first albums and spend the rest of their careers vainly trying to copy that sound and success. Alan Jackson could have fit into this mold - his debut was tremendously successful, selling more than 2 million copies; fortunately, he's continued to grow as an artist. As good as "Here in the Real World" is, it's not one of his strongest CDs. However, it's better than the best CDs of many big country artists and a must-have for country fans. Most highly recommended.
The beginning of a country legend.......2004-02-09
I became a fan of Alan's from the first time I heard his first single, the title track of this album. Here in the real world is a classic tearjerker about the difference between dreams and reality. Yet, Alan's reputation has been built as much on up-tempo songs as on ballads, perhaps more so. This album showcases his ability at all types of country song. His music, then as now, was firmly rooted in traditional country but with just enough of a contemporary edge to appeal to a wider audience.
Apart from Here in the real world, the other singles from this album were Wanted (a great ballad about a man wanting forgiveness from a woman who left him, and who he is unable to trace), Chasing that neon rainbow (a brilliant up-tempo song), I'd love you all over again (a brilliant ballad) and Home (a touching tribute to his parents). All five of those songs were included on his first greatest hits album, but the other tracks are just as good.
Ace of hearts (an up-tempo song about success in love) Blue blooded woman (one of those classic city girl meets country boy songs, also up-tempo), She don't get the blues (about a woman who likes to dance but doesn't want anything else), Dog river blues (another song about a man whose woman has left him, but this one is up-tempo) and Short sweet ride (a great up-tempo song to close the set) are all outstanding songs that sound good enough to have been singles. So even if you've got that hits collection, this album is well worth buying.
Alan has recorded many excellent albums. This one remains my favorite, although the others are not far behind.
THIS IS PERFECTON.......2003-08-08
this is one of the best first albuns i think i have possibly ever heard for ace of hearts to here in the real world with it classic opening line to the neon rinbow to the dog river and back home this is these are a mix of heart felt ballads family songs and a few top tappers thrown in essentail for alan jackson fans to kniw how the jackson train stated

One stop on the road to immortality.......2006-11-19
This is a more than competent CD transfer of acoustic recordings of Sir Nigel Playfair's legendary 1920s revivals of The Beggar's Opera and its sequel Polly. Quite sufficiemt to show why the Beggar;s Opera production, meant to fill a few weeks' gap at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, ran for three years. And while Gay's sequel was like most sequels, not up to the original, this recording is the only source for the second-best ballad opera.
Must Stop Ordering When Drinking - Or Maybe I Got Foxed.......2006-09-02
Right. Can't remember what state of sobriety I was in when I ordered this cd and I may have missed some key clues about its nature. But I was so excited to find anything claiming to relate to Gay's "Polly" (which otherwise seems to have completely disappeared after it was censored in the 18th century - even internet wise) that I bought this cd. Turns out it is a cd version of some music originally recorded in the early 1920's. It is moderately interesting even for someone who is not primarily interested in antigue recordings (aka "scratchy records") because the style may be closer to that of the original performance. (There is no reason to think that common tastes were better in the 18th century than in 1920.) It is certainly different than contemporaneous performances of BO.
Don't mean to be sexist - which I am - but the duets, choreses and male performances seem to be less antigue than the soprano pieces. The broads are simply squeaky. Something to do with frequency loss in early recordings, I expect. On the other hand, the bass songs are equally abrasive and archaic.
Even the notes about "Polly" in this cd are disappointing. No mention of the history of "Polly", no mention of the source for the music. Try googling for a link for Gay and Polly. If you find one, be sure to post - I would love to know.
Unless you are an academic involved with some of the most obscure corners of the history of recorded music, I would forget this one. Instead, root for someone to find and record Gay's Polly. And buy a more modern interpretation of the Beggar's Opera. I have certainly heard antique recordings restored more vibrantly than this cd - but I would think that depends to a large extent on the quality of what you have to start with.
The only reason I gave it 2 stars (for some reason, Amazon refuses to record my change from 1 to 2 stars; but that is computers for you) instead of 1 was because of I love the melodies of the songs so much. But I will also admit that it is possible that Gay have been lucky that Polly was suppressed - the melodies and lyrics are not nearly as good as BO. On the other hand, this cd is so antique that is an unfair basis for judgment, But what the H!
