This Comanche, Texas, native weighs in with a self-titled record whose best cuts are more reminiscent of Buck Owens than Garth Brooks. Another of Jim Lauderdale's great Bakersfield homages, "It's Only 'Cause You're Lonely," opens the album, and Dodd quickly follows with the aching Buck-like ballad "Best I Ever Had." He occasionally goes off track with lite-rock stuff such as the single "A Bitter End," and has a serviceable but unexciting voice, but shows more than just promise here. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Great CD you will play over and over again.......2006-07-20

While in Austin, Tx on a business trip, I happen to see Darryl Dodd live and bought this CD then. Since then, I have played it over and over again. I was actually surprized that I enjoyed so many songs on it. I loaned it to a friend and never got it back so here I am buying another one. I am very excited to have found his CD's on Amazon - now I can keep up with his new releases!

    5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2007-01-29

I just accidently discovered this guy (where's his PR?) and I'm just in AWE. I love his voice (it's not monotonous throughout every song like most vocalists today seem to be, so you know he's got true talent if each songs sounds different and gives you a different mood). The more I listen to this CD, it just gets better and better. I just can't believe this musical genius (he WRITES his own songs!) is so underrated.

5 out of 5 stars As country and as comfortable as a pearl snap shirt.......2004-02-21

Nashville has been known to make more than one man fall to his knees and struggle to get back up. It's a busy city filled with needless efforts to build images and mold artists into what the executives want. When Deryl Dodd arrived in Music City in the early 1990s, he was willing to almost anything to succeed in the music business. He had the right looks, a great sound and by the mid 90s, had a record deal. When Dodd became very ill and weak while traveling to promote his debut album, friends and physicians alike dismissed it as one of the details of playing the Nashville game. When it was all said and done, Dodd had been the victim of a much more serious situation. He had been battling viral encephalitis, has been recovering slowly over the past three years and has now presented country fans with another great collection of music. His sound is as fresh as every, as he rediscovered his music by playing the honky-tonk circuit in Texas and testing his music with the common man, the person country music is written for.
Dodd's newest album is entitled Pearl Snaps. With a title like Pearl Snaps, the product is bound to be good and the listener will not be disappointed with the album Pearl Snaps or the title song. It is an upbeat song that pays homage to the trusty pearl snap western shirt. Dodd doesn't end his tributes with pearl snap shirts. He goes on to sing a tribute to his home state with the toe-tapping "On Earth As It Is In Texas." No Texan can hear the song without their hat-size growing a few inches.
Dodd includes a healthy serving of honky-tonk music as well as a couple of swing numbers that are reminiscent of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. His Bob Wills tendencies come through on the playful, bluesy "Cows" and he swings it on "Back to the Honky Tonk." In addition to the standard tearjerkers and fun songs, Dodd treats us to a couple of remakes of the songs we all remember from the 90s. "A Bitter End" is the song that Dodd seems to be best known for as the song made a strong run up the mainstream country charts. He also includes re-recordings of earlier numbers such as "How I Got to Memphis," originally recorded by Bobby Bare, and the emotionally charged "One Ride in Vegas."
For those of you who wondered why the immensely talented Deryl Dodd just seemed to drop from the country music scene in 1998, your worries are over. He is back and in full force. This collection of songs comes from the honky-tonks and they will put you in a honky-tonking mood.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, good-natured country music... with a rootsy sound!.......2002-12-02

I like this guy! Coasting on the razor edge between "young country" Top 40 and Joe Ely-style bar band rowdiness, Dodd has a pleasantly un-perfect voice which makes him human enough to be a little "alt"... The title track to the best-of set is pretty irresistible and catchy... it's followed up by two more great tunes, "She's Have You Back" and a nice rendition of Tom T. Hall's "That's How I Got To Memphis." From there it's a steady slide into commercial formulae, but on the whole this is a pretty decent collection. Plus, I have to confess I've always been partial to Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown..." Dodd's version ain't as great as Lightfoot's, but that's a tough standard to live up to, and Dodd does alright. This album is a little bit on country's poppier side, but definitely worth checking out.

    3 out of 5 stars Third time's a charm.......2002-02-17

Stardom is hunting Deryl Dodd. Having broken into country as a hot-shot guitarist with Martina McBride, Dodd got his own contract with Columbia just a few years later. His debut LP garnered attention, and a cover of Tom T. Hall's "That's How I Got to Memphis" started climbing the charts. But fame's call for self-promotion ran against the grain of Dodd's upbringing, and combined with the struggle of a divorce to knock the rising star off the ladder of success.

Two years later, with his direction sorted out his, Dodd waxed a second LP, and with an original single, "A Bitter End," he once again enjoyed radio play. Opening slots with Brooks and Dunn and The Dixie Chicks beckoned him to a second chance at success. But that second shot was cut short by fatigue that turned out to be viral encephalitis, a swelling of the brain that eventually robbed him of the energy to get out of bed and the dexterity to pick guitar.

Another two years on, Dodd was recovered enough to get a band together, and finding inspiration in Lance Armstrong's Tour de France rides, he began rebuilding his career. First came a switch from Columbia to its rootsier subsidiary, Lucky Dog. While most of Lucky Dog's roster consists of edgier artists looking to enlarge their audience, Dodd clearly saw the label as an opportunity to edge away from the mainstream, a place where he could reconnect with his musical self, away from the glare of major label publicity.

With so many false starts in finding his audience, this third album is something of a reintroduction. Three of the tracks (his first two album's singles, plus the first album's title tune) are reprised here. The latter, "One Night in Vegas," a rodeo-themed tune about persevering to achieve one's goals, is a theme song for Dodd's career.

The rest of the album's songs (including a fiddle-driven cover of Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown") show off a tremendous range. The album's first single, "Honky Tonk Champagne," is the sort of barroom dance tune plied by fellow Texans Jack Ingram and Charlie Robison. The closer, "Where the River Flows" features beautiful acoustic guitar and faith-based harmonies. A live recording of the fiddle-and-steel weeper "She'll Have You Back" (previously recorded by Tim McGraw) shows off the vibrancy of his concert performances.

Once can ponder whether the ups-and-downs of Dodd's career have been a trial or a blessing, but there's no doubt that his talent deserves the extra chances to be heard.

5 out of 5 stars Welcome back, Deryl!.......2002-02-02

It's good to see Deryl's work back on the shelves. I had looked forward to this album being released, and was not at all disappointed. While I confess to being a fan of his music for a number of years, I was taken aback some months ago during a trip to Dallas when I heard an absolutely haunting rendition of "Sundown" on the car radio. Rarely has anything I've heard on country radio these days so caught my attention. I hope we'll see a single being released on this one. Elsewhere on the album, "Cows" is a catchy tune with a message for those whose baby's not coming back "`till the cows come home", "On Earth as it is in Texas" just screams "Lone Star Pride", those of us who prefer Wrangler Checotah and 13MWZ's to white shirts and ties can certainly relate to "Pearl Snaps", and, though previously released, I still can't get enough of "One Ride in Vegas". Great album. This one will be in the car's CD player for some time.

4 out of 5 stars Fine album of polished honky tonk.......2004-11-15

Lucky Dog's loss continues to be Dualtone's gain as the roster of Sony's former imprint follows a migratory path to the Nashville indie. Joining recent releases by BR549 and Charlie Robison, Dodd's latest shows the greatest leap forward. His previous LP, 2002's "Pearl Snaps," was something of a comeback effort, regaining his musical footing after a crippling bout of viral encephalitis. This time out he leans even more heavily on twangy two-steppers, with plenty of fiddle, steel and honky-tonk piano.

Having returned to Texas, Dodd's brought a bit of his Nashville polish with him, but like many who temped on Lucky Dog, he pairs commercial edgings with a heart-and-soul that retains its roots. The opener, "Never Again," hits the ground running with a Bakersfield shuffle that features a terrific walking bass line from the band's newest member, Kerry Wilson. The mid-tempo title track reworks classic tear-in-your-beer themes with some clever wordplay, and Dodd adds a sly edge to the Kenny Rogers hit, "Love or Something Like It."

When Dodd stays up-tempo, he rocks in the Texas style of Jack Ingram and Pat Green, but when he slows down for tunes like "Outside Lookin' In" and "She Does the Best She Can," he drifts to the middle of the road. The exception is the closer, "The Crowd," a heartfelt ode that nicely captures the bond between Texas musicians and their fans. Those who've followed Dodd's career, or simply like the roadhouse music of the Lone Star state will enjoy this one.

I just recently purchased the Stronger Proof CD and it has yet to leave my CD player. I love the range of music on Deryl's latest CD. He pours his heart into every song and makes you want more. Because of his music I have bookmarked his tour schedule and plan on traveling to wherever he's playing. Keep 'em coming, Deryl...

5 out of 5 stars Deryl Dodd is Stronger Proof.......2004-10-19

In an age where singers are just the product of the Nashville Music Machine, it is great to know and hear that someone so unique and multi-faceted as Deryl Dodd exist.
I love the fact that Deryl's new CD has many different moods and personalities. If it didn't, it wouldn't be Texas music, it would just be pigeonholed with all the other flavors of the month that Nashville is so good at cranking out. Let's face it, the thing that makes any Texas artist unique is the fact that they come from a state with many musical influences and it can't help but rub off on them. Thank Goodness! This is what makes a Texas artist stand out and what makes everyone that isn't jealous! Deryl uses this to his advantage and anyone that has seen him light up a stage with everything from a tear-jerking ballad, through old George Jones to Stevie Ray knows what I am talking about. I think this CD is a great overview of Deryl's talent and I urge anyone that wants to hear true Texas music to buy one today!

5 out of 5 stars Dodd at his best in years.......2004-10-18

I have listened to Deryl since the beginning of his career and this is by far the best of his albums. As far as this putting him at the top of the Texas songwriting crowd, I feel like he is already there. The thing that sets him apart from the others is that he does have a different sound on certain songs and he does not blend in with the same old "sounds like everyone else - just to sell an album" acts. He is once again selling to his fans and the people who continue to love him and not the Nashville industry and the critics who don't get him. Worked for people like Steve Wariner so why not Deryl - Go buy the album and all of his others and make your own decision!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Definitely Stronger Proof.......2004-10-18

I was pleased to see another Deryl Dodd CD hit the shelves! I bought it as soon as I saw it hit the Texas charts, which was the first week. I thought this was truly one of Deryl's best CDs. It shows that a writer and musician can stick to their beliefs and be successful. I disagree with the previous reviewer (Nichols) about this CD and think maybe what the reviewer is missing is that this CD shows Deryl's versatility. In music today, labels make artists into fictional characters...their albums all sound the same. This reviewer must be caught up in that hype and has missed the treasure of a true talent. It is a real treat to put in a CD with an artist that can show us the rock and roll side as well as a tender ballad. Cheers to Deryl for such a wonderful CD!

5 out of 5 stars God meant THIS when he said "Country Music".......2001-03-11

For the naysayers who proclaim that Country is (again) "onit's way out", purchase, borrow or steal this CD! Deryl is one ofthe most talented performers - Country or otherwise- to come along ina long, long time, evident in his songwriting, arrangements, vocals -the whole ball of wax. Plenty of artists today are only mildlytalented, causing some to wonder if it's true that anybody these dayscan get a recording contract... not so with Deryl Dodd. His rock n'roll approach to good old-fashioned, hardworkin', downhome countrymusic will leave you pining for more with the ending of every song, and the bluesy cuts- ohhh, those bluesy cuts...(excuse me, I need tobe alone for a few seconds) well, they speak for themselves. Deryl isas good in concert, if not better- as he is in studio. I only wishthat while listening to the CD I could see him - singing with thoseeyes closed; that sexy little grin on the most adorable face on theplanet, and Heavens above ...those 13MWZ's... Deryl Dodd is God's giftto Wranglers. And you can't get that on a CD. (sigh....) But this isthe closest thing to it.... A Deryl Dodd CD is as good as a 2 weekpaid vacation!

5 out of 5 stars Country at its best delivered by DD.......2000-02-05

Had never heard of Deryl until I saw "Friends Don't Drive Friends" video on CMT recently. I went to the internet to find out as much as as I could about him because his sound takes me back to the old WWVA days, too long ago to think about! They were good sounds and so is Deryl's. I was so excited to get this CD from a promotion through BMG and there is not one song that couldn't stand on its own. So many times when you purchase a CD there's a lot of lost time between good songs but every song on this one is great. Deryl has an unforgettable voice, a sound that you'll recognize every time you hear him and such a sincere delivery that makes you not want the songs to end. I play mine over and over and never get tired of it. I read an article where he laughed about people calling him a "throwback" but I think that was a compliment of the best kind. That means that he is singing REAL music and has the REAL country sound to do it. He's not "pop", he's COUNTRY. So much of the music now isn't genuine COUNTRY like I grew up with but Deryl's songs bring back a lot of good memories and definitely exude COUNTRY at its best! You can just about hear the tears in his voice when he sings the sad songs and you can see him just a swingin' when he sings "Bad for Good"! He's delivering himself, heart and soul, when he sings, totally genuine, somewhat shy, and that draws you to him. I was so glad to hear that he is well enough to be doing some shows after quite an extended recovery period from his illness. Was so sorry to have missed him when he was in Orlando. Can't wait for him to expand his tours into my area and when he does I'll be the first one there! Deryl might have taken a slight setback due to his illness but I'm sure he'll back stronger than before and his name will be among the GREATS "somewhere down the road".

5 out of 5 stars Country the way it ought to be.......1999-01-08

Deryl Dodd's new self-titled CD is the best album I've heard in a long time. The first single is "A Bitter End", a cautionary tale from one man to another about what happens if you don't hold on to that woman you'll miss the rest of your life. Deryl's ballads ("Best I Ever Had", "On Any Given Day") are the best in the business and his rockers, especially "Bad For Good", are superlative. If you only buy one country CD this year, this should be it. My only complaint is that the single "Time On My Hands" isn't on the CD.

        5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2001-04-17

This is one of my favorite CDs. I can listen to the whole album without wanting to skip any song. The title track "One Ride in Vegas" is a wonderful rodeo song and I also really enjoy his cover of Tom T. Hall's "That's How I Got to Memphis". "Friends Don't Drive Friends" certainly should have gotten more airplay. But for a sentimental, sad song "This Ol' World (Keeps Turning on Me)" is a real winner. I also appreciate the fact that he writes most of his own stuff. That makes me feel like I know/understand the singer a little better.

Deryl is one of the most talented performers - Country or otherwise- to come along in a long, long time. Plenty of artists today are only mildly talented, causing some to wonder if it's true that anybody these days can get a recording contract... not so with Deryl Dodd. His rock n' roll approach to good old-fashioned, hardworkin', downhome country music will leave you pining for more with the ending of every song, and the bluesy cuts- oh, those bluesy cuts... well, they speak for themselves. Deryl is as good in concert, if not better- as he is in studio. I only wish that while listening to the CD I could see him - singing with those eyes closed; that sexy little grin on the most adorable face on the planet, and HEAVENS ABOVE...those 13MWZ's... Deryl Dodd is God's gift to Wranglers. And you can't get that on a CD. (sigh....) But this is the closest thing to it.... A Deryl Dodd CD is as good as a 2 week paid vacation!

5 out of 5 stars Truely awesome!!!! Worth every penny!!!!.......1999-02-28

I love Deryl's singing. He shows alot of emotion in his work. I just enjoy listening to him so much. Keep up the great work Deryl!!!

Time on My Hands is a fun and unique song with a strong rythm and memorable lyrics. Deryl Dodd is one of the most exciting, well rounded performers of recent memory. Not only does he sing lead on all songs, he also plays lead guitar and wrote or co-wrote most of the material.
