Country Sunshine

Editorial Reviews

Recent success as a songwriter allows Bruce Robison to record on his own terms, as this self-produced, self-released collection attests. Rather than striving for radio hits, the writer responsible for Tim McGraw's smash "Angry All the Time" showcases his plainspoken, subtle, and droll songcraft with a minimum of production trickery. He collaborates with wife Kelly Willis on "Friendless Marriage," which sounds like a George-and-Tammy update, while other writing partners include Allison Moorer and the Dixie Chicks' Martie Seidel. Gary Allan has already covered the album's standout anthem, "What Would Willie Do," a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the messiah of progressive country, while Bruce's brother Charlie previously recorded the album-closing "Tonight." For other artists searching for quality material that transcends formula, the balladry of "Blame It on Me" has hit potential, though "Valentine," one of the best songs here, sounds so personal it's hard to imagine anyone singing it better than the reedy-voiced Robison. --Don McLeese

Thanks....

5 out of 5 stars One Hit Wonders.......2007-03-09

This album was a bit like attending a class reunion. The songs you thought were your favorites have lost a bit of their luster and those you didn't particularly care for now are surprisingly touching. The music hasn't changed so it must be the beholder? In the 70's "Please Come to Boston" was painful to experience; now it's like an old friend. "My Maria" has become a trigger to all sorts of memories. I wonder why I didn't think about it over the years. Try this album--it's a time machine.

4 out of 5 stars So nostalgic.......2007-01-09

This is a great CD and brought back lots of memories. A few songs where we hit the skip button, but overall a feel good compilation for those of us in our 40's now. (ouch, I know) I would definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars One Hit Wonders.......2006-09-21

4 out of 5 stars Brings Back the Memories.......2006-09-10

This Cd is really good, it is well worth getting. The music of the 70's is really good for family listening and it is nice to be able to play it with family.Kids nowadays like newer music but this CD relates to now generation too as alot of kids nowadays are listening to the 70's music and think it is great, my kids are 14 and 16 and even they love it. It is well worth checking out and I know I am very happy with it. If you are a music fan you will be too.Hearing Vicki Lawrence sing The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia was something that brought back memories of being in high school for me and hearing it on my schoolbus. Wow!!!! I am very impressed with the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Jukebox Jewels.......2007-07-07

When my wife and I listened to this it reminded us of youth centers or teen halls of the Sixties. This has several songs to dance to and is very upbeat. I don't often go in for collections like this because we have bought alot of greatest hits from groups of the Sixties. This particular CD had several songs not on the other CDs we have. The other thing I find myself putting together CDs of hits from other albums. This saves me the trouble. The other thing that makes it very special is they are all great songs. To often these CDs have only a few hits and the rest are songs from the period, but they weren't big hits. The sound on this CD was sharp and clear. Better than when we heard it on new 45s or albums back at the time. For those of you that don't know, many sound systems weren't stereo then and the record player or Jukebox needles often were not new so you got pop and hiss playing these then. I certainly don't hear any of that here. I highly recommend this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Can't live without this album, smile.......2007-01-11

Lost my original - had to replace it. Originally bought the DVD because I loved the title song. As I played it, I began to have a true appreciation for the other songs she does - a unique style and well, I just really derive great pleasure from listening to them. Somehow they evoke similar feelings to some I have - what more could anyone ask from music? - and I very much enjoy her voice and style, to me it is unique. The Prism Song and others, are marvelous once you listen to them for a time, as least that's the way it worked for me. I listen to this one over and over and never tire of it.

4 out of 5 stars These ARE the original recordings - the Collectable label does not deal in anything but original recordings .......2006-09-02

A reviewer felt these were not the originals but they sound to me like they were recorded in a genuine early-mid 1960's studio atmosphere, which is one of the reasons I like them. Besides the great standard "Sunshine", I also like many of the other songs, like "I Know My Rider". So don't let any suspicion of these not being the originals dissuade you from buying this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Fine singer, fine collection.......2006-01-05

I share sentiments with most of the folks who have posted here. "We'll Sing In The Sunshine" was an important tune from my early teens (I still remember holding that tinny little transistor up to listen carefully). It's still a great song, and the whole album is great. I noticed a couple things on careful listening to the two versions of "Sunshine". The arrangements are quite similar, although the sound quality on the remake (which was on the original album) is better, the other one sounds like AM. More interesting is that the lyrics are a bit different. In the original, reference is to "I'll stay with you one year" and "I'll kiss you every night". On the album, it was "I'll live with you one year" and "I'll love you every night". Some things you just couldn't say on radio back then, I guess. Even for an album, this was more than a bit risque for the early 60s.

Another note -- the cheesy liner notes from the orignal "My Kind of Folk Songs" are here -- about how the family immigrated to the U.S. from new Zealand, and her father was a kind of itinerant carny. I know the U.S. part is wrong (they immigrated to Canada), and I suspect the father part might be made up, too.

I read columns by Gale (under the name Gale Zoe Garnett") in the Toronto papers from time to time, and am sorry I missed her recent, well-received, one-woman theatre performances.

    Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars She sang in the sunshine....then she went on her way.......2004-08-01

Gale Garnett is one of the most underappreciated artists of all time. Although this album is just wonderful and Gale's moody lyrics and vocals can tear your heart out - its a shame that most of Gale's songs remain unavailable unless you are able to hunt them down at old record stores. This CD basically contains the songs from Gale's first album (including her only major hit "We'll Sing In The Sunshine") with a few bonus tracks thrown in. Buy this album, and believe me when I tell you that if you like it, then you will absolutely love her other 7 albums that were released from the mid to late 60's. There was another CD compilation released on a very small label called "The Many Faces Of Gale Garnett" and although this is the title of one of her albums, the CD was a more genuine greatest hits collection than this, containing a few tracks from each of her first 6 albums. Many of Gale's lyrics are written by her and come from her life experiences - she sings in many different musical styles which is probably why she never stayed a radio-friendly artist. I actually discovered Gale from the Rankin/Bass puppet-animated movie "Mad Monster Party" in which she provided the voice for the most memorable character, the red-haired vixen Francesca. She sang two excellent songs for that movie which are available on the CD soundtrack. Gale uses her unmistakable husky voice to make you feel whatever she is singing about - I have never heard another vocalist who sings with such emotion and honesty.

5 out of 5 stars Sing Along Time.......2004-07-17

I owned Gale's LP, "My Kind of Folk Songs" back many years ago. I probably played that album more that almost any I had. I had every song committed to memory. Since that time, I spent many hours searching the download sites looking for her music, but could never find anything other than We'll Sing in the Sunshine and The Prism Song. I was very excited when I found this re-make album. I was also totally amazed that after 40 years, I was still able to sing along with almost every song on the album.

    5 out of 5 stars A very nice collection.......2006-08-15

Nancy is simply at her best on this extensive collection that covers her usual greatest hits, and then some. Her take on Bang Bang is more superficial than Chers',but has it's own foxy simple read.
Her hits of the 60s'are unbeatable. Sugartown,You only live twice,as well as her Lee Hazelwood duets are pop masterpieces, with great Billy Strange productions.Nancy brings us up to date with "Let me kiss you"(Morrisey production).
The modern-ized bang Bang is the only misplaced track, simply stupid.
Nancy and dad on "Somethin' Stupid are heaven. Buy this cd

    5 out of 5 stars A Fine Listen...an "Essential" for Any Collection!.......2006-07-04

I was probably playing with dolls when Nancy Sinatra had her big hit with "Boots". But while I've always liked that song with its catchy music and straightforward "this is how it is, buster!" lyrics--along with "Somethin' Stupid" which she recorded with her Dad, I never gave much thought or knew a lot about her other work. After seeing her on "Entertainment Tonight" recently where she mentioned this new release of some of her past recordings, I was intrigued enough to purchase it. All I can say is, it's an "easy on the ears" collection of tunes by a fine singer! On "Bang, Bang", I think Nancy's reading gets to the heart of the lyric and is tremendously more effective than the usual, more popular tempo. "Drummer Man", "Kind of a Woman" (a catchy single girl's anthem if there ever was one!), and "Here We Go Again" (a touch of Nashville) are other favorites here. Nancy can sing anything...pop, country, jazzy tunes...she weaves her style around them all. (And who knew she recorded a theme featured in a Bond movie?!) There's a little bit of everything represented on this CD. There's even some more recently recorded tunes near the end. So, perhaps the best thing I can say is that Nancy Sinatra proves you can have tunes recorded over 30 years ago which are still relevant and "good listening", as well as, today, be over 50 and still have an affecting (and surprisingly youthful sounding!) voice that effortlessly interprets more current music. I do wish she had included "Summer Wine", a popular recording she did with Lee Hazelwood, but I guess there wasn't room for everything. Overall, a fine representation from a talented singer. Keep singing and recording Nancy!

5 out of 5 stars Goodness! What's all the stink about?.......2006-05-27

I ordered this CD without reading the reviews...then went back and read them. I got so nervous, then I listened to some of the tracks. What is all the stink about?! Little variations are obvious in some songs and not so obvious in others--but at least the songs are performed by the original artists. I think some are a bit more acoustic than others which is great because now you can actually hear separate, distinct instruments instead of muffled background music. It's a nice change from what you hear on the radio every day, and the songs sound enough like the original recordings to enjoy them--with the addition of little twists. This CD is a very novel addition to my CD collection, and I absolutely love the variety of songs on it! I'd recommend it to anyone--just remember to be broad-minded and open-eared...

      1 out of 5 stars Purists Beware.......2005-03-19

Out of 36 songs in this collection, only 3 are original recordings. The rest are new studio recordings - aka: Garbage!
Don't waste your money on this junk! What a disappointment.

      3 out of 5 stars So-So.......2005-02-12

I should have read the reviews first before I purchased this set. Let me start by saying I have no problems with the seller. The service was fast and the e-mail contacts were done in a timely fashion. They didn't record this set, so I harbor no ill-will towards them. The disc set was quaint at best. If you don't mind 1st and 2nd takes on the original tune, than you'd probably find this set acceptable. To me, a vast majority of the "remakes" were a disappointment, at least they weren't "disco" versions. The sound quality is very good in the set, a plus, as some of the early recordings lacked decent sound. If you can live with the remakes, that barely resemble the originals, you might like this set. THINK IT OVER!

5 out of 5 stars I thought the music sounded just fine & I dont feel cheated.......2004-10-30

In very clear words on the front bottom cover it states "New Studio Recordings By The Orginal Artists" Then granted it is on the back it states that the ones with the * only are the original recordings. I dont know if that means it is different artists singing those songs, but it sounds like the real thing to me. Still I hadnt heard some of those songs in years and really have enjoyed hearing them again, no complaints. I would buy them again. I live in an area where we cant get radio, and I have very limited capability of buying any songs, so why not have what I can afford. As long as the consumer is happy, which I am.

I remember some of these songs when I was growing up. However, I have been introduced to some new songs as well.

2 out of 5 stars Just Average CD.......2006-06-21

I too was slightly disappointed in this CD, although it did contain 7 tracks that I did not previously have. My copy also had "Get on Up" by The Esquires instead of their follow-up "And Get Away." Also, there was audio damage which sounded like static all through the last track, "I Can't Help it If I'm Still in Love With You" by B. J. Thomas. But, I did get a few hard to find tracks, which, like the other reviewer says, is all you would want to buy this for.

PS - "Get on Up" is listed as a track on Volume 1, which I also ordered and which hasn't yet arrived. Maybe it is "And Get Away"???

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre in every sense of the word.......2004-04-14

Extremely disappointed in this one. I found the sound quality to be only marginally better than what I had on my existing 45's. The packaging is ugly and the feeble attempt at liner notes is an embarrassment. As another reviewer has already noted, they even managed to get the title on cut #16 wrong. How in the world does that happen? The correct title should be "Get On Up" by the Esquires. Only redeeming features on this one is that there are 26 cuts including a couple of tunes that are extremely hard to locate. I had not heard nor have I ever seen Jimmy Castors "Hey Leroy" since it charted back in '67. Other hard to find tunes include the aforementioned "Get On Up", Kenny O'Dells "Beautiful People" as well as the Hombres "Let It All Hang Out". Unless there are a bunch of songs you are really looking for on this disc I would skip this one for sure.

      5 out of 5 stars Aces High!!.......2005-06-09

Here is another terrific recording by the aptly named Amazing Rhythm Aces. This "amazing" band has recorded some of the best American music produced over the past 3+ decades. Russell Smith has, in cooperation with band mates and others, written some of his best songs for this set. The songs here compare with those on "Too Stuffed To Jump", "The Amazing Rhythm Aces", and all of the other masterpieces this band has given us. I recommend this CD to all lovers of great music. You can never go wrong with the "Aces".
