Letting insurgent country songwriter Robbie Fulks loose in Nashville was sort of like letting the Sex Pistols tour in Texas--just not a good idea. When Fulks got home to his native Chicago though, he had a batch of what most country fans would decidedly not call Country Love Songs. Despite their provocative titles and sometimes unsavory lyrics, tunes like "She Took a Lot of Pills (and Died)" and "The Scrapple Song" really are pure country--taking their honky-tonk cues from Buck Owens, Webb Pierce and Ray Price. Fulks sings each in a voice somewhere between a warble and a sneer, but that's half the fun of it. Steve Albini's straight-ahead steel-guitar-heavy production is the other. It's a shame that only one side of Elvis' multi-faceted talent is remembered 25 years on from his death but there is so much more to the millennium's greatest performer than garish jump suits and shaky legs. The 50 Greatest Love Songs reminds us what a great singer Presley was; coming from the heart with more feeling and passion than most could ever imagine, all 50 of these songs are classics of the last four decades. The double disc set includes all the up-tempo standards like the incredible "Suspicious Minds", "I just can't help believin'" and "Always On My Mind" plus the Dusty Springfield signature tune "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me". Also included are some of his older works from before and during the cinema years like "Good Luck Charm", "Love Me Tender" and "Old Shep". I am a huge Elvis fan, especially his love songs and gospel music. This CD is excellent and is a very comprehensive collection of his love songs. Even songs that were made famous by other artists, are sung well by him. His renditions are a pleasure to listen to. There is only one Elvis!

Recordings sound like they were all done the same day,
in as little time as possible, with the least amount
of studio talent. Terrible.

About half the songs are great old songs I'm familiar with, the other half are songs made famous by other artists and most are clangers for Elvis that are painful to listen to.

Very enjoyable and nice mix of artists. Not entirely sure how Olivia Newton John's song, I Honestly Love You, made it on though. Was that "country" and I just missed it? I'd have given it a 5 if I didn't have to skip that song each time.

What really amazes me on getting the CD, "Everlasting Love Songs" is simply this great compilation of country vocal reflections of various artists of the 90s, which is a much awaited and much needed collection at this turn of the millennium. Although I'm a well-rounded music listener and not to consider myself as a country buff, this 17 track collection of country love songs is so enjoyable to listen with that mellow touch feeling. After listening all the tracks, I firmly believe that country music is truly a genuine treasure that music lovers must take pride and this CD endorses that. Prime Cuts: My Imagination, Something that We Do, Our Kind of Love (with Carolyn Dawn Johnson)

Cupid's quixotic ways gets an album's worth of veneration on Clint Black's latest enterprise. Culled from his extensive canon with one previously unrecorded entry (Jim Croce's "'I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song"), these are all songs thread together with romantic love at their cynosure. However, this is not your typical "best of" collection; these numbers are re-recorded with Black himself at the helm. While some have a religious similarity compared with the originals, a few are creatively encased with a different arrangement and nuanced by Black a little differently. Vocally, Black hits the high water mark here: he brings a more seasoned maturity that gives these romantic excavations depth and insights sometimes missing from the originals. Fans who have had been smitten by Black's honeyed nasal twang (as well as his chiseled dimples) will have much to revel here.

As aforementioned the sole previously unreleased track is Jim Croce's "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song." Employing a 70s rock palette dotted with some winsome dobro punctuations, the midtempo "I'll Have to Say" rocks romantically with a tongue-tied Black opting for the radio as his communicative means to express his feelings to his paramour. Most drastic in terms of its stylistic make-over is "Our Kind of Love." While the original has a sinewy bluegrassy feel with Alison Krauss offering barely audible backing, this new version is a full-blown duet with Canadian chanteuse Carolyn Dawn Johnson on a fuller country underpinning. Similarly, Black's Grammy nominated duet with wife Lisa Hartman-Black "When I Said I Do" enjoys a luscious orchestrated arrangement, making its message of committed love sound even more gorgeously romantic.

Though Black nuances certain words differently relative to the original, "Something That We Do" still preserves the acoustic feel of the original. On "Like the Rain," Black's number 1 record from a few years back, he brings in fellow artist Steve Wariner to sing backup on what is the most poetic intricate ballad Black has had ever written. This multiple-CMA winner's use of the rain metaphor over the development of a couple's relationship from its blissful start to its tumultuous times is just stellar. As hinted by "Like the Rain," not everything is maudlin, so the less romantic at heart need not fret. "My Imagination," for instance, finds Black daydreaming about an unattainable lover that possesses a heartbreaking tenor that is just so bittersweet.

Of the hat-wearing alumni of the 90s, though Clint Black has made his mark, but he's often overlooked as a singer of songs that deal with the heart. Things are about to change with this new CD. With these songs so packed wih depth and emotions, Black has done himself, his fans and Cupid real proud.

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Great ablum.......2003-01-17

I only bought this ablum because I am a die-hard Collin Raye fan. True, his ballads are remarkable, but come on just buy his Direct Hit and you get his greatest songs.

Classic Raye.......2001-04-09

An entire cd of Collin Raye's best ballads should be added to every fan's collection. It doesn't matter that you might have all of these songs except one on other cd's, what does matter is flow of these songs and the mood the cd creates. Classic Collin, beautiful love songs, emotionally moving ballads, what's not to love! In my option, "Survivors" from The Wall Came Down cd and "And I Love You So" Don McClean's classic are the highlights of this cd. Collin Raye has never dissappointed his fans before and is not about to start now.

Great songs but still a rip-off.......2000-09-28

Compilation CDs are rip-offs for diehard fans or even fans with a few of the artist's CDs. This CD is no exceptional. The songs all have been released before except for one new song. But being Raye's big fan, I have to buy this CD.

The only new song here is the Don McClean's classic "And I Love You So." This track is solely produced by Raye himself. Unfortunately Raye delivers an ordinary version of this ballad backed by gentle guitars. The arrangement of the song is safe rather than adventurous. However, Raye's heartfelt vocals make up for the lack of originality in its production.

The rest of the songs here have all been found on Raye's previous releases. But I must applaud Epic for not just choosing the hits. Well chosen album cuts are represented here including the old Waylon Jennings classic "Dreaming My Dreams with You." "All My Roads," a track from Raye's "The Walls Came Down," is another excellent choice. The song starts off softly but builds up to a crescendo allowing Raye to showcase his strong and high tenor vocals.

"I Volunteer" is my favorite song from this CD. It's one of the best songs about self-sacrifice ever written. While perennial favourites like the semi-religious "The Gift" and Raye's big hit "In This Life" are also included.

A good collection of love songs where the theme of forever love is well explored.

A great introduction to new fans.......2006-06-25

If you do not know much about Anne Murray and love simple, touching ballads this is a great introduction into the world of Anne Murray. All the songs here are adult contemporary often straddling the line (perfectly I might add) between pop and country. The most memorable cuts are "What's Forever For", "It Should have Been Easy" , "Just to Feel this Love from You" and "Beginning to Feel like Home". This compilation has a melancholy feel to it and it reminds me of the feeling you get at Automn just before the advent of Winter. A beautiful effort all around.

While their success has long been celebrated since their first No. 1 singles in 1980, Alabama's influence tends to be ignored. The quartet's sustained success opened doors for bands from Exile, Shenandoah, and Confederate Railroad to Diamond Rio. Good album for when you're feeling romantic. Best song on the album is the title song "In the Mood" which has a great, bluesy guitar reminiscent of the one on Chris Isaac's Heart-Shaped world.

What A Way To Go!.......2003-03-31

It's sad to see Alabama retire but I guess after 20+ years they deserve it. In The Mood again is an Alabama classic despite that there are only two previously unreleased tracks on this awesome CD. Every song is a fantastic classic hit. This compilation was very well picked and all the songs are truely awesome love songs. If Alabama wanted to give us one final hoooraaahhhhhhhh! ---- then this is it and they went out with a bang! I would highly recommend this CD to any Alabama fan. All the awesome love songs together on a double CD. What more could we ask for as a grand finale? Happy retirement Alabama and thank you for all those years of beautiful music!

Alot of the popular songs, but missing some of the classics........2003-02-27

Do you really need to hear the CD to review it? Well, it's pretty obvious that a lot of these songs are collections of ones they've done before. However, I think they kept it a little in the safe zone and didn't take any risks on songs that may not have been chart toppers but probably didn't get the airtime they deserved. I believe Burn Georgia Burn from the Feel So Right album (CD, whatever it was album back then) was one of the best love songs they have ever done, and it's not even sung by Randy Owens. With that said, it's Alabama so I'd be kidding myself to give them anything lower than four stars.

Really In the Mood.......2003-02-20

When I saw the songs on this album, I said, if they're calling it quits, why not make a bunch of new songs? I think that's exactly what they didn't wish to do, keep their success, not just fill up their Farewell album with Filler. The last new ones, In the Mood, a man coming home from work after an especially tough day, (we all know those) and The Living Years (I think this is a remake of an older song) seem to not be the tracks I foresaw as, the end. But from Track 3 to Track 20-something, there's nothing but good old hits, oldies for forever. God bless Alabama, whereever they Go!

Good but short.......2007-01-09

If you're looking for beautiful love songs sang by an old pro,
this is it. Englebert has his own style and was true to form
in this cd. I'm not a real fan of his but I bought this as
a gift for someone who was and I ended up listening to it
because of the selection of songs included. If your an
Englebert fan and also if you're not, this will please. My only
complaint is there are not enough songs included.

songs for the romantic at heart.......2005-02-14

Culled largely from Engelbert's fabulous collaboration with arranger/conductor Bebu Silvetti, the 1995 "Love Unchained" album, which has a gorgeous, lush orchestral backing for Engelbert's timeless, extraordinary voice, this is a marvelous collection of mostly classic songs, with choice picks for me being two of my all-time favorite melodies, the beautiful "Love is a Many Splendored Thing", and "Unchained Melody", both sung to perfection by Engelbert. He is 59 here, and there is a world weariness and a mature huskiness added to the glorious sound of his voice, when compared to his hits of the late '60s and '70s, and a depth of heartfelt emotion that goes straight to the heart.

Bebu Silvetti is well known in the world of Latin music, where he creates his instrumental magic for superstars like Luis Miguel and Rocio Durcal. His arrangements are a fantastic blend for Engelbert's style, who with good reason has earned the title of "The King of Romance".
This CD has 9 of the most tender and loving of the 12 songs found on the "Love Unchained" CD (missing from the CD are "Answer Me", "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay", and the upbeat "Such a Night"), and the final track, "There's No Song Like a Slow Song" is from Engelbert's 1996 CD, "After Dark", and is a lilting number with a contemporary country feel, and a spoken verse that is a reminder of that other King of music, Elvis.
This compilation is a winner...perfect for lovers, candlelight dinners, and those ever young at heart. Total playing time for this nicely priced CD is approximately 37 minutes.

The power of Engelberts voice is incredible and excellently displayed in this collection of songs. He never ceases to amaze me with his unequaled vocal stamina. Highly recommended! Buy it NOW!

Love Unchained Part Deux.......2002-05-03

Mr. Humperdinck is my favorite singer,therefore I may be biased toward his work. This CD however is cut straight from "Love Unchained" with the exception of the last track, so I feel this review is really about a compilation of classic vocal magic. Englebert sings in three octaves and never seems to run out of voice. I have read where he has been called the voice of the century. Pound for pound you will agree with this assessment after listening to this disc.

Doing justice to the classics.......2002-02-09

Engelbert Humperdinck's long career - now in its fifth decade - is largely down to his versatility as well as his enduring voice. He has retained the impressive vocal range that he first displayed in the 60s with hits including Release Me, The Last Waltz and There Goes My Everything. His loyal fan base continue to buy concert tickets in droves, and he has continued to record new albums at a rate of at least one per year during each of the past 35 years, a statistic that none of his contemporaries from the 60s can claim. Still recording new and original material, Englebert occasionally returns to his musical roots to record classics from the 50s and 60s - the content of this recently-recorded album is one such project. A long-time fan of Nat King Cole, Engelbert's emotional performance of Cole's Too Young is a worthy tribute. Another highlight, and another triumph, is Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - this song is one of popular music's most demanding, requiring superb breath control to sustain the repeated crescendoes that feature throughout the song. The liner notes to baby records could be lifted from one jewel case to the next with nary an eye ever batted, because they all trot out some form of the same trite message: "It doesn't matter what you sing to your baby, so long as you sing." Don't count Sara Hickman out--on Newborn (and on the logical successor, Toddler), she lets us know from the get-go that "my wish was to create an album for parents who have trepidation about singing to their newborns." Still, and despite the inclusion of standards like "Hush" and "You Are My Sunshine" on this not overly touchy-feely 15-tracker, she's concocted something special, outdoing her well-intentioned peers by performing originals so repetitive (the soothing "It's Alright") or ridiculous ("Goop's In It," about a booger-infested baby peeper) that singing along, infant at your side, seems right. Hickman wins us over with informality; in effect, she hands over her baby monitor, letting us listen in on stuff that's spilled spontaneously (and, because she's Sara Hickman, melodically) from her lips while gazing dopily at her own newborn. Occasionally, she can go overboard with the candor--listening to the ballad "Lily," written for her daughter, feels like opening somebody else's love letter--but forgiving her is easy, first because by being so open she becomes an instant surrogate friend to isolated new parents; and second, because her voice, evocative of Karen Carpenter on "Lily" and of Linda Ronstadt on "It's Alright," will tame the testiest baby. It's vocal crushed velvet. Give this album to stupefied new moms--by not being overly concerned with making sense, it may be the most sensible baby album you can buy. --Tammy La Gorce

Going to a baby shower soon? Friends or family members about to have a kid? This is more than a CD of some music -- is family intimacy in a box!

Seriously, this CD was created to encourage parents to sing to their children. Simple songs that are soothing to babies. One of the songs was made up by Sara while walking the floor with her colicky firstborn. This is the kind of stuff that settles the stomach of both parents and babies. Beautiful stuff.

I received this album as a shower gift and I can't tell you how much it has meant to my whole family, even the grandparents. A Family Favorite.......2003-12-15

A friend gave us a copy of Sara Hickman's Newborn and Toddler cd's when our daughter was born and they are forever on our stereo... in the livingroom, the nursery, and the car. Newborn is such a sweet cd that has calming songs as well as a few funny and playful songs (good for dads to sing along with!). The Toddler cd is great fun for when our little one is wide awake and in need of entertainment. You don't feel so ridiculous being silly when you are singing along with Sara! Both cd's are essential for new parents. We treasure them!

If my now 6 months old daughter (who has been Sara's fan for 3 months) was writing a review, it would go something like this. "I love to listen to Sara's CD. She has a beautiful voice that instantly makes me forget to be fussy. I could listen to her singing for hours, and indeed I do - and never tire! The song "goop in your eyes" makes me smile, esp when mama tries to sing along (she is NOT a very good singer). My only complaint is that the pauses between the songs are too long. Sometimes I have just enough time to remember what was making me fussy, but then I forget again when the next song starts!" --- aah, isn't she cute?

Don williams is my FAVORITE singer, and has been for a very long time.I was sad that i didnt see (Im just a country boy) on this cd.Anyway, if you have not heard any of these wonderful love songs, then you are missing out. These songs soothes the heart and ear, as Mr. Don Williams loves to have family near.If you have never listened to Don Williams, get this cd and you will love his music as well as thousands of others do. Very Good Budget Compilation From The 70s.......2001-06-17

With his albums out of print, this is the only chance to get some of his classic ABC tracks on cd. It features some of the familiar hits too, like "Love Me Tonight" and "Lay Down Beside Me". But over half of the songs are classic album tracks.

Songs from "You're My Best Friend"(1975), "Visions"(1977) and "Expressions"(1978) dominates this release. Nothing here is filler. Find out more about him than just the regular hits. Get this album now!
