It happens to every hard partier--your lifestyle eventually catches up to you. For Steve Earle, this third so-so effort from the then-roué-ish troubadour was a pretty glaring rehab-ahead warning light. The sloppiness was beginning to show: half the disc bogs down in throwaways, cheap echoes of Guitar Town and Exit 0's country-rock acumen. The rest, fortunately, is prime, focused Earle: the Vietnam-vet title track, the Wild West-themed "Snake Oil," and the oft-covered classic "The Devil's Right Hand," in which the composer achieves that perfect balance of city-slick pop and hillbilly twang. Earle would hit that one-two combo again, but not until he shook that party monkey a few albums later. --Tom Lanham

5 out of 5 stars One of the best for the road.......2006-10-21

I have some favorites to cruise by. This is one of the best - find a curvy back road, turn up Copperhead Road and let the 6 cylinders of a BMW take you away. A sure mix of Bob Dylan and Bryan Adams with a steady beat.
What a feeling upon return. Thanks Steve!!

This has to be one the best Country Rock records ever made! A must buy!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Album From A Righteous Rocker.......2005-12-16

COPPERHEAD ROAD is the best album ever by Steve Earle, blending influences from such artists as Johnny Cash, the Charlie Daniels Band, Waylon Jennings, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Willie Nelson, the Marshall Tucker Band, Tompall Glaser, the Outlaws, Billy Joe Shaver, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Band, and the Allman Brothers Band circa BROTHERS AND SISTERS with a touch of alternative attitude, creating the best country-rock sound this side of the 70s Southern Rock boom. The songs on side one are a loose suite based on the experiences of Vietnam veterans during and after the war, with several lines in the title track being so cautionary about the dangers of going where you shouldn't be that they inspire me to look at pictures of pretty actresses as a deterrent against hanging out on the wrong side of the city where I currently live (Kingston, NY). Earle's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Great CD with a touch of rock and country. I purchased the CD for the song Copperhead Road but I love every one of the songs!

4 out of 5 stars A.......2005-08-05

Coming from Texas it always surprises me how few people are familiar with Steve Earle, but then when I name off some of the singers who have covered his material the same people haven't heard of those singers either ;)Steve's really not much of a singer himself, but like Dylan he turns his handicap into an asset. He's certainly distinctive, and there's never a time when you don't believe in his utter conviction. "Copperhead Road" is undoubtedly the best album Earle had put out since his breakthrough "Guitar Town", although there hadn't been much. Perhaps a readthrough of "Hardcore Troubadour", Steve's biography, will give the proper background to what drives the man's lyrics. It's worth reading even if you've heard Earle's music and already decided you didn't like it. Suffice to say he's lived through some rough (largely self-inflicted) episodes in his day, and what emerges is an unflinching, yet soulful, look at the human condition. Album opener "Copperhead Road" is a brilliant example of this, an outlaw ditty of the old school which compares the old moonshining days to the current meth lab and pot farm battles, even insinuating along the way that the narrator (who is picking up where his daddy's moonshine business left off) learned everything he knows about drugs while fighting in Vietnam. Heady stuff. There are two other major songs in Earle's repertoire which come from this album: "The Devil's Right Hand" was originally penned back in the 70s and is a cautionary tale about violence: "it gets you into trouble but it can't get you out". Nonetheless, this isn't Sunday School preaching here; Earle realizes the allure of the old outlaw ways as well as the penalties, and his playing both sides of the argument that makes the tale much more convincing than it would have been if he were merely sermonizing. The third song I mentioned is "Johnny Come Lately", a returned soldier ditty done up Irish jig style with the Pogues playing back up band. The rest of the album is solid if insubstantial. Many of Earle's love songs come across as fairly lightweight and middle of the road compared to his more topical work, but to his band's credit (and the producer's, of course) everything on here sounds great, at least if your idea of the way country music should sound is more Waylon Jennings than Rascall Flats.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT ROCKING CIPPOLINA LOST CLASSIC.......2007-03-06

THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM FOR FANS OF QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE FANS AND FANS OF JOHN CIPPOLINA. GET THIS CD!

5 out of 5 stars Great long-lost '70s rock with John Cipollina.......2004-09-29

Following on the heels of Cipollina's work with Quicksilver Messenger Service, Copperhead turned out to be something of a one-off that never garnered much favor with fans. After Clive Davis' firing from CBS, the band's label didn't have much use for them either, and this one album is all that remains.

Cipollina's signature guitar sound can be heard throughout, but this album is really more a creature of early-70s melodic hard-rock, ala fellow Bay Area rockers, Earthquake, and acts like The Edgar Winter Group/Rick Derringer and Joe Walsh. The tracks are distinguished (beyond Cipollina's presence, of course) by the fine playing of second guitarist Gary Philippet, bassist Jim McPherson and especially drummer Dave Weber. Cipollina, Philippet, and McPherson's songs feature humorously bizarre lyrics about roller derby, kamikazes and monsters. The use of Hawaiian and bottleneck guitars add some twangy lines.

This is one of the great forgotten rock albums of the '70s, and the CD reissue adds the non-LP B-side, "Chameleon."

4 out of 5 stars Great guitars Ok every thing else.......2004-04-24

This is one of my fav. CD's in my collection. Cipollina is great though out the hole CD. This is suppost to be the only CD released by copperhead but there was really a second one my father owned and saw the consert of back in the 70's or 80's.I've searched the web for it but still no luck. So over all this is a CD worth having for any true Cipollina fan. The best song I'd say is They're making a monster, the solo is excelent.

5 out of 5 stars Rock'n'roll at it's best.......2002-03-11

This is a gem of an album, disregarded by a lot of folks as hippie turned roller derby violence toting John Cipollina ventured into new territory.

I don' think so. This is a high energy album with lots of fast paced rock'n'roll and a couple of ballad type songs thrown in. No laid back grass smokin' music here this is red hot.

It is a showcase for John Cipollina in a new role but you can see the attraction. A tight band very together with a lot of energy and interplay there. The album hits the ground running with Roller Derby Star, a song with a catchy chorus even though it is one you probably would not want your kids singing along to. All the tracks on this album, my personal favourite being Kamikaze although I suspect that would not be the correct thing to say these days. Cipollina is in excellent form throughout.

All I would like to add, aside from a plea for any additional tracks that may be lying around in a vault somewhere, is buy this CD, turn the sound up way loud and just enjoy the experience of Copperhead.

2 out of 5 stars DOESN'T HAVE MUCH BITE!.......2002-02-16

I waited a long time to buy this album. Had it in my hands a couple times when it first came out in the early seventies. I
should have trusted my original instincts. I was really disappointed when listening to this recently available import-
not much classic Cippolina-style guitar work (which is why I
purchased it). For some reason I thought he was the centerpiece
of the band? Somehow the banal lyrics and trite song arrangements
overwhelmed whatever contribution Mr. Cippolina made to the band.
My suggestion: just buy up all the Quicksilver Messenger Service
discs while they're still available, then lament that John never
really recorded any worthwhile stuff beyond that band.

1 out of 5 stars bar band with amateur writing skills.......2006-11-23

There is a reason this album never made very many waves. It's terrible. The drums on every song sound like some 80's metal producer got a a hold of them. Giant cannon type reverbs on the drums that do not fit the southern rock or blues style. No screaming southern rock guitar signature licks. The songs are sub par at best in writing and and performance quality. Take a listen for your self at their official website and make your own judgement. This IMHO. [...]

4 out of 5 stars Raw Southern Rock at it's finest.......2005-06-04

These boys were young, but extremely talented. Jon Byrd has that SRV talent that so few six stringers have. With Tony doing the bass bangin', you are sure to tap your feet. This is a must have for any southern rock fan..!!

3 out of 5 stars Solid southern hard rock.......2003-02-27

If you like southern rock (with a hard approach) in the shape of Blackfoot, Doc Holiday, Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynard, I guess this album will be to your satisfaction. Copperhead bring on a good groove with rough vocals, and the most accurate comparison may be to the band The Regulators. It's not the easiest thing to describe Copperhead, but let's say if you are, or want to be a biker I think you might find the soundtrack to your life in the opening song "Whiskey".

3 out of 5 stars Hidden Gems.......2006-05-16

What could possibly make the soundtrack album to the uber-crappy horror movie Dr. Giggles noteworthy? Scattered among the typical soundtrack pop songs are a couple of otherwise unreleased AOR/melodic rock gems - O Father by House of Lords and a cover of Bad Case of Lovin' You by former Bad Company frontman Paul Rodgers. The House of Lords track is particularly good, and the tracks by Copperhead, Ten Inch Men, and Apostles are decent as well.

It's probably not worth the $20+ that some sellers are asking for the album, but the House of Lords track alone makes the soundtrack worth picking up if you find it at a decent price.
