They weren't joined at the hip, yet Chet Atkins and Les Paul were far closer than many realize. Chet's half-brother Jimmy Atkins played rhythm guitar in the Les Paul Trio in the '40s. Both Chet and Les's playing reflected Belgian Gypsy jazz virtuoso Django Reinhardt's influence. They not only created records of monumental importance to guitarists in all genres, but their signature model electric instruments advanced guitar technology. In other words, ample common ground existed for these 1970s collaborations. The first,
Chester & Lester, won the pair a Grammy in 1976;
Guitar Monsters was the 1978 follow-up. Recorded in a loose, lighthearted atmosphere that bypassed country (except for the tongue-in-cheek "Give My Love to Nell"), these albums explored their roots in the big band era. In some cases, such as "It's Been A Long, Long Time" for Les and "Hot Toddy" for Chet, they revisited songs they recorded years earlier. Les, downplaying his electronic wizardry, proved that he didn't need it to dazzle. Chet, who'd come to favor sterile perfection over passion, unleashed his old intensity in the presence of a fellow virtuoso.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best guitar albums ever.......2005-12-14
This album focuses on two of the greatest guitarists, who you can easily hear their different styles on this recording.
The production and material is brilliant as well.
Once you could find this recording on a two for one cd, with the other recording they did called Guitar Monsters.
Les Paul supposively showed up with a cold and the performance is not as good. There is more joking around as well.
Never the less, if that recording, buy it. Else, purchase this recording.
By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.
Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews
Classic meeting of the Greatest!.......2005-07-21
If you don't get any other Chet and/or Les album/CD's, get this one.
It's a wonderful chance to hear two of the greatest electric guitarists together. The vastly different styles of these two are a perfect blend, and the meeting of two old pros is classic. It's a lot of fun and great music.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Shagadelic baby.......2000-01-01
A most excellent listening experience. Two different and distinct styles that when combined with the proper amount of Budweiser creates a most shagariffic time.
Entertainment at its best, for the players and listeners........1999-04-29
Chet Atkins reminds me of my father who used to play every evening in the living room after dinner. He'd listen to this album, get a good laugh, and start playing Caravan or Avalon. I have not seen my father for 20 years now but this record reminds me of those days. Days when I'd rather watch TV instead of listen to dad's picking. Days when country music was definitely not for a 10- or 11-year old growing up in southern California. Now that I have kids with whom I'd like to spend more of my time with, I realize the plain simple fun that my father was trying to have. He wasn't professional, but when he played with friends or relatives, it sounded like the fun Chet and Les are having on this album. I'd really like to dedicate this review to my father who lives somewhere in the US. We've lost contact for the last 20-some years, but I know he's listening to the analog version of this album very often. It was his favorite and now I know why.
This is why those Brits picked up their axes!.......1998-07-12
The playful joy found in the interplay between These two masters of the guitar make you wish this record wouldn't stop! Part of the fun comes from the between songs banter between the "boys" left in tact. My only wish is that it was longer. Just can't get enough of these two together.

With its rich film catalog, Disney has a natural advantage when it comes to expanding into musical theater. But 1999's Tarzan wasn't the very best choice for a stage adaptation. Unlike, say, Beauty and the Beast, whose score was written by show-tune vets, Tarzan was associated with a musical-theater newbie, Phil Collins, who expanded his original score for the show, writing nine new numbers in addition to the five from the movie. But while he does come up with agreeable pop melodies (as, for instance, the hit "You'll Be in My Heart" and the new "Waiting for This Moment" and "For the First Time"), his greenness shows in the lyrics, which tend to spell things out way too much ("In learning you will teach/And in teaching you will learn," etc.) This CD certainly is kid-friendly, but unlike the best Disney material, it lacks that extra layer that would entice adults as well. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic.......2007-06-12
Every song is excellent. If you saw the play, this is a must have.
Amazing.......2007-04-03
I'm hoping that someday there will be a touring company of Tarzan that will be coming to Chicago, so I wanted to have the Broadway cast recording so that I would know the songs that were added to the Broadway show to help expand the animated film. I know that the songs from the movie are amazing, and hopefully, so are the new ones. With Phil Collins doing the new songs for the Broadway show, it will be awesome.
I LOVE this music.......2007-01-30
I was very excited to hear that "Tarzan," one of my favorite Disney movies was being made into a musical. Being a theatre major in school, I had to buy the soundtrack as soon as I found out. The music was beautifully written, the singers all sound wonderful, and frankly, I can't wait to see the show!! I have read some reviews before I bought it and one thing that really bothered me was some close-minded person who complained that the lyrics didn't rhyme. Well, no, not all of it does, but that's what makes this music so beautiful. People always automatically think that lyrics have to rhyme, but I find the best songs to be where the lyrics don't necessarily rhyme and the music is beautiful; songs like the ones in this show. I highly recommend this soundtrack to everyone.
Not quite there........2007-01-17
While some of the numbers were really great. Its evident that Broadway isn't Phil Collins calling. As an album it meets expectations, as a big production-its not quite as great as it should and could be. He has yet to expand some of the songs and make them into typical big broadway numbers. Theres too much pop in it, the music and lyrics are too simple. Collins music is missing an element if you were to look at it as a broadway production. It sounds virtually the same as the Disney, with just some different intrumentals-not good as a show. I think this show has the potential to be absolutely mind blowing if they heighten everything.
Phil Collins is the best........2007-01-12
I like Phil Collins work, the music he write and sing and also the music he play (like in the Big Band with A Hot Night in Paris). He is truly a musician. And now he sorprise me with this production. Although he doesn't sing in it (only the bonus track), if you like Phil Collins and Disney this is a most have.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

The Better of the two.......2006-06-03
I have both disc in the series. I liked the music on this disc much more than the first. The selections seem more focused and the sounds are much clearer. Also, the particular pieces fit better together. I love the sound of this group and hope they make more in the future.
Not as good as version 1 in this series.......2004-09-03
This is by the same group who did the wonderful & engaging Early American Choral Music 1. Somehow this CD did not live up to its predecessor in some ways. The performance is still top notch, but somehow the CD as a whole isn't quite as engaging to listen to as the first. Perhaps version 2's strength is also its weakness. Its diversity of composers allows you to pear past the shadow of William Billings and sample other notable early American hymn writers. That exposure is valuable & appreciated. I just couldn't get into it as much.
A final note: many of the texts are beautiful (and available from the publisher's web site). However, I would criticize "Who is this that cometh from Edom?" as dwelling just a bit too much on the Jews' rejection of Jesus. Among other reasons & issues, Christianity says that we are all sinners & there is no cause to single a particular group out negatively.
Same as 'Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800'.......2004-02-21
Please note this CD is a duplicate of His Majestie's Clerkes's "Goostly Psalmes: Anglo-American Psalmody 1550-1800" -- identical contents but a different name and cover. I ordered both and was irritated to discover this. This CD is cheaper, so I recommend this one. It is a lovely choral work from a little-known period of sacred music.

Excellent!.......2001-10-24
I love this cd! In fact, I like it so much that I'm buying a second copy to replace the one that was scratched in my step-dad's car stereo/cd player. While most of the music is from the Star Wars Trilogy, there are also songs from ET, Superman, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys Star Wars, or even just great instrumental music. The Boston Pops Orchestra does a fabulous job with the music of John Williams!

The Best of the Best.......1999-11-03
This CD was just what I was looking for. I've owned the Original Soundtrack Recordings of the Star Wars Films for many years but I realized that often the concert arrangments and performances are of a better quality than the originals. In any case, this CD is a great collection of not only Star Wars music but also includes other classic Williams movie themes such as Superman, ET, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Superb!
It was a great cd, well it still is!.......1999-07-06

They weren't joined at the hip, yet Chet Atkins and Les Paul were far closer than many realize. Chet's half-brother Jimmy Atkins played rhythm guitar in the Les Paul Trio in the '40s. Both Chet and Les's playing reflected Belgian Gypsy jazz virtuoso Django Reinhardt's influence. They not only created records of monumental importance to guitarists in all genres, but their signature model electric instruments advanced guitar technology. In other words, ample common ground existed for these 1970s collaborations. The first, Chester & Lester, won the pair a Grammy in 1976; Guitar Monsters was the 1978 follow-up. --Rich Kienzle

old guys that shine.......2003-02-18
This double album (Chester and Lester AND Guitar Giants) is a particularly fun CD-it was my first sojourn. As a guitarist who now appreciates what I used to think of as kitsch or corn pone, this album not only showcases each player's virtuoso style from Chet's extraordinary clean Gretsch guitar fingerpicking and great arrangments to Les' Les Paul and his incomparable trills, fills, speed runs and his Paulveriser (the echo unit and /or chorus). These are the guys who pioneered electric pop guitar excellence and electronic innovations. I cannot recommend a better album for those who would like a taste of each player. Some cool tunes, some fun chatter included in the studio giving insights into these two old pros.

This is Great Music!.......2001-08-19
.... This is some great instrumental music, very guitar oriented. I was younger when I heard this music, I was 14-15, and listening to the typical Joe Satriani kinda music. However, i'm a jazz fan, and I am not the biggest fan of country music, but this music is just....fun. That one word can explain the whole collection: it is no more or less. These guys are having a great time here, and what is really cool is that instead of trying to play better than the next guy, they seem to complement each others playing. ....I have very few qualms with this music. If it had been bad, this music would've never been voted for Grammy's and sold so well. It is in fact quite good music. My biggest complain is with Les Paul and his guitar tone. It is quite dry, with a lot of echo and reverb, and a little distant in the mix. It works on some tunes, but the fact that he uses the same guitar and the same tone on pretty much every tune gets sort of annoying at times. On the other hand, Chet Atkins does a nice job of alternating between his warm electric guitars, acoustic guitars, and he really makes the most of his instruments, tonally. There is some phasing and some other sort of effects on the guitars in places here, and the music definetly sounds dated in places, especially with all of the electric piano. Besides these little nit-picks, this is very lively, fun, exciting music. There is no distortion here, no heavy rock licks, just some old fashioned country/jazz/Django-esque playing going on here. It's a great listen, and if you are stuck in a primairly rock instrumental world, try listening to the music here. It is really great. ....
Outstanding guitar.......2001-01-13
Chet Atkins and Les Paul are both guitar geniuses, each with their own unique style, which blend perfectly on this CD. The sound on this CD is amazing. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys perfect high fidelity sound and outstanding musicians. Ed Quasebarth
Not guitar monsters...guitar Gods.......2000-06-05
First of all, officially, I've only heard half of this particular cd (which is two records rereleased onto one cd). I own "Chester & Lester." With that out of the way, I now have to say that if you are AT ALL interested in this recording, buy it. "Chester & Lester" alone is worth the price of this disc. Technical precision, subtlety and lots of fun prevail as these two guitar giants, no wait, Gods (Clapton is the disciple) tackle mostly jazz standards. Though there are no vocals here, the guitarists are mic'd and we get a chance to hear their banter in between, and sometimes during, songs. Though this is all great fun, the real reason to buy this cd is to hear pickin' that you will hear nowhere else.

Never mind the gay, just enjoy the music.......2005-01-18
If you are dubious about the "gayness" of this music, no worries! So are most of the composers on this disc. Strangely, despite the premise of the collection, in the liner notes most deny their music is "gay," even if their lives are. Aside from the Whitman texts and a few other hints, you would be hard pressed to hear anything here but beautiful 20th cen. American music. And it is a beautiful selection, nice especially for the inclusion of lesser known young composers along with Rorem and Harrison.
20th Century Composers OUT on the Town.......2002-09-26
...Of the composers of note during the last 100 years or so (here in America) the vast majority of them are/were gay. This disc, with it's companion Volume 2 are a way to step into the gay sensibility a bit...
Well, I defy anyone to listen to Walt Whitman in 1989, by the late Chris De Blasio and have them tell me that isn't the heart-rendering cry of a gay man for his dying generation.
I don't want to give the impression that this disc is a downer. It isn't. But it is defiantly gay. Painfully beautiful, and at times downright challenging. Buy it. Stick it in you drive, and luxuriate in the fabulousness (and I don't use the "F" word lightly).

Absolutely wonderful music! I recommend this recording highly! The most moving works represented were provided by Philadelphia composer Robert Maggio and New Yorker Lee Hoiby.
