A 28-year-old newcomer from Kentucky, Shannon Lawson promises more than he delivers on his debut recording. Produced by Mark Wright (Lee Ann Womack , Brooks & Dunn, Trisha Yearwood), Chase the Sun is a showcase for Lawson's big, powerful voice, which calls to mind that of former New Grass Revival vocalist John Cowan. Lawson got his start playing bluegrass in an eclectic Louisville bar band called the Galoots, and several songs on Chase the Sun, including the driving "Bad Bad Bad," feature traditional bluegrass instruments: mandolin, banjo, Dobro, and fiddle. But the overall sound is Nashville Slick, with a paint-by-numbers overproduction style that is sadly endemic these days on Music Row. The single "Goodbye on a Bad Day," about a romance gone bad, is the most glaring example--it's a power ballad cluttered with too many layers of strings, drums, and distorted electric guitars. Lawson wrote or cowrote 10 of the album's 11 songs, but the best one is the only cover, a soul-meets-bluegrass take on Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," which features a cool Hammond organ and a blistering mandolin solo. A few more like it would have made Chase the Sun stand out from the pack. --David Hill

Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20
Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes
What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.
C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.
Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.
This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

You've got to be pretty good to open for the pope. So it's no surprise that the Supertones, fresh off their January 1999 opening gig for the Papal One in front of 68,000 people in St. Louis, have a release worthy of any audience. Chase the Sun, the band's third album, builds on the ska-driven mold the group has forged and offers up another dose of riddims, rap, and rollicking fun. Both the opening "One Voice" and "Fade Away" showcase power-chord rock rhythms broken only by the skintight staccato horn section. "Away from You," the first single, is indeed radio-friendly and will draw strong comparisons to classic Bob Marley. The 'tones can even slow down, as evidenced by "Old Friend" and the final, reflective "Refuge (In Conclusion)." --Michael LyttleCustomer Reviews:
the supertones strike yet again.......2002-01-29
this is an amazingly committed band; to God, to their fans, and to their music and i think is shows in every release.
to those who are talking smack and accusing the supertones of selling out because they're 'not ska enough', just listen to FIF's 'cool enough for you' to find out exactly what i have to say about that.
Nicely DONE!!.......2001-12-08
Chasing The S-O-N.......2001-09-03
This is my first Supertones and from the sound of it, definitely this wouldn't be the last. Their type of music circles in ska, rock and reggae category. What makes Supertones a unique band aside from some obvious L-E-T-T-E-R singing and making long tripping introduction is their God-centered songs. I urged them to continue chasing the qualities of the S-O-N' which we also as Christians should always bound to follow.
Here's a small info for each tracks. If you got favorites, well here's mine (11 favs out of 14):
1. One Voice - Opens the album with a loud bang. Convincing message about Christian unity. (7th*)
2. Hallelujah - Most fun song to sing, praise-like. Will enjoy the L-E-T-T-E-R singing with the group. (4th*)
3. In Between - A real in-between. Intro is a bit loud, but will surprise you with tidbits of ska-reggae tunes especially in the chorus. Message focused on decisions. (8th*)
4. Away From You - Radio-friendly with a lot of ska feeling, a wonderful combination. Duet with Crystal Lewis makes it perfect. Hear how the song was sincerely executed, with humble words 'There's no life away from You'. A blessing! (my 1st favorite*)
5. Dedication - Nice to listen when you are having a long trip. Song is dedicated to the warm memories of old friends with Christ. (6th*)
6. Grounded - This is like a kung-fu fighting song. Hoo, hah ' let's stand and fight for Christ. (10th*)
7. Sure Shot - 'I Wanna Be' or 'Wanna Be' is much a better title. 'I Wanna Be Like Jesus' is the best wannabes mentioned. Very cool song. (5th*)
8. Old Friend - A soft song with suave acoustic guitars. A simple song that raises questions on why choosing us as humble servants. But still at the end, we can say 'It's good to be with You, old friend' ' none other than Jesus. (2nd*)
9. Chase The Sun - Fast and loud - this became the carrier song of the album probably because the song highlights the OC Supertones ministry but lyrics are a little too weak.
10. Fade Away - Super upbeat, dominates the bass guitar. A plea to let doubts 'fade away'.
11. Hanani - 'Hanani, here am I' ' Hanani is a name in the Bible that means my grace and my mercy. Chorus soars with continuous proclamation. (9th*)
12. Revolution - A playful instrumental with a tune that's like a chase scene in a movie. Hear some shouts of 'Revolution!'. (11th*)
13. Health And Wealth - Another fast and loud track that says chasing 'health and wealth' should only be in moderation. Prioritized Christ above all.
14. Refuge - A touching acoustic song that tells us to 'Take refuge in His heart'. A nice song to hear at the end of the concert. Matt's clear voice and guitar smoothes the ear. (3rd*)
Never afraid to try other types of music. OC Supertones expertise is ska music - with powerful and great messages, this is a good try. You won't regret. 4 stars ' highly recommended.

waxman is the man!.......2007-05-10
but as much as love the gerhardt/rca recordings, i am not fond of the selection of works chosen to respresent waxman. it is good to know that there are many other cds of waxman's work out on the market to be found and appreciated.
but i do like the 'elegy for strings' from old acquaintance, the ' a place in the sun' suite and 'sunset boulevard'.
Nostalgia and then some.......2006-02-20
Each piece is preformed well by the National Philharmonic Orchestra. However I do not see situation for listening to this album. It does not make good driving musing or reading music, or just sitting and listening to music. This does have a place if you are collecting various composers' works.
The list includes:
Prince Valiant (1954)
A Place in the Sun (1951)
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Old Acquaintance (1943)
Rebecca (1940)
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Taras Bulba (1962)
Many of the scores are used again in later movies. You can hear scores of Franz Waxman in about three hundred movies.
Franz Waxman Tribute.......2005-10-12
Wonderful compilation of vintage Waxman.......2003-04-12
A good selection of Waxman's film music can be found here, including his most acclaimed, Sunset Boulevard. (It certainly has a sparkle that Joel McNeeley's recent rerecording seemed to lack, even if the score is not present here in its entirety.) Other highlights are the stirring themes of Prince Valiant and the eerie and sinister tones of his score for The Bride of Frankenstein. A particular favourite of mine is Rear Window, sadly absent here, though to my knowledge only one recording exists (Lalo Schifrin and the San Diego Pops, Hitchcock: Master of Mayhem): Fans can take solace in the fact that one of the Rear Window tunes appears here in its earlier form as we heard it in A Place in the Sun.
If you are a film music buff, this is definitely worth a place in your collection. Gerhardt captures the essence of Waxman perfectly.
Franz Waxman's Music is Magic.......2001-10-02
Waxman's sense of melodic line and tasteful harmonies are masterful. Of particular note are his suites from Prince Valiant, and The Bride of Frankenstein (also used in the old Flash Gordon serials). Charles Gerhardt does a fine job conducting this wonderful collection of jems.

Album Description
This 28-track collection highlights the astounding career as director and producer of Steven Spielberg, whose films are inexorably linked with the symphonic beauty of John Williams' scores. With five Oscar(r) wins and 41 nominations, Williams is a master of his art. The set also features other Spielberg collaborations including Quincy Jones, Jerry Goldsmith, and Billy Goldenberg. From "Duel" (a premiere recording) to "The Terminal," this release is a journey through movie magic.Customer Reviews:
mediocre mess, nonetheless worth having for some.......2005-07-07
That said, there is one decent -- decent, mind you -- reason to buy this CD. That's for the five-minute track of music from Spielberg's "Duel." It isn't great music, by any means, but if you're a Spielberg fanatic, this is the only release there has ever been (to my knowledge, at least) of music from that movie.
To be fair, not all of the tracks here are poorly done. "Hymn to the Fallen" comes off fairly well, and so does the music from "A.I." and "The Terminal" -- and the "Minority Report" theme is actually quite good. But much of the rest just doesn't sound right, so if you're looking for a quick way to assemble a quality overview of Spielberg music, this isn't the way to go.
That brings me to my final complaint, which is that "The Lost World" is omitted entirely! There were several good themes done for that movie; it was no mere rehash of "Jurassic Park."
For the seriously devoted only.
28 tracks from "Duel" to "The Terminal" ~ Steven Spielberg.......2005-05-11
Anyone who has ever read my reviews knows that I'm a complete "film-score-buff" nut...Silva Screen Classics has come up with the best of the best in the category of soundtracks/scores...just take a peek with their latest release featuring a 2-CD-Set with inclusive 28 cues of unforgettable scores from the leading composers of the past three decades...the quality of sound, texture and substance is a film score collectors dream...each and every track is a self culture unto its own, bringing countries, worlds and universes under one umbrella.
This is one not to be missed...so many highlights and stand outs...from one spectrum of comedy, romance, drama, suspense, action, adventure...to the other of horror, war, thrillers and classics that linger from decade to decade...many have sold millions in Soundtracks, but here in this collection they all appear compliments of conductors Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raines...conducting The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus...though different arrangements in some cases, still a very good representation in tribute of this legendary director and icon.
A must have for "film-score-buff" collectors, including music lovers and anyone who enjoys a little nostalgia now and then...thank you James Fitzpatrick(producer), Reynold da Silva(executive producer) and Silva Screen Classics...it's amazing when one thinks about just how much a part of filmmaking history that Steven Spielberg has been over the last 30 some odd years...listening to this collection will bring back wonderful memories of some of those highlights and then your imagination sets in...just the way we like 'em!

Underrated artist.......2004-01-18
The title track is a nice country rocker, that would have been a great single. I like the opening uptempo song "This Old Heart", a song about heartbreak. What would a country album be without one? "Dream Your Way To Me" is a really nice midtempo song with a great chorus and great vocals from him. Other favorites include "Superstar", "Where Would I Go", "Are You Happy Now" and his inspired bluegrass cover of the classic Marvin Gaye song "Let's Get It On".
A really strong debut album. I hope he finds more success with his next release, because country radio really missed out on the talent on this album. Lets hope they wise up with his next one!

A VOICE TO WATCH.......2003-03-25
Lawson balances the CD with up-tempo and power ballads, and works effectively well on "Where Do I Go" and "Are You Happy Now?".
The musicianship is top notch and Lawson's cover of "Let's Get It On" is as off the wall as you'd expect in a country singer covering a soul song. But, it's a good reworking and Lawson pulls it off.
RECOMMENDED.
