Chase the Sun

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
A 28-year-old newcomer from Kentucky, Shannon Lawson promises more than he delivers on his debut recording. Produced by Mark Wright (Lee Ann Womack , Brooks & Dunn, Trisha Yearwood), Chase the Sun is a showcase for Lawson's big, powerful voice, which calls to mind that of former New Grass Revival vocalist John Cowan. Lawson got his start playing bluegrass in an eclectic Louisville bar band called the Galoots, and several songs on Chase the Sun, including the driving "Bad Bad Bad," feature traditional bluegrass instruments: mandolin, banjo, Dobro, and fiddle. But the overall sound is Nashville Slick, with a paint-by-numbers overproduction style that is sadly endemic these days on Music Row. The single "Goodbye on a Bad Day," about a romance gone bad, is the most glaring example--it's a power ballad cluttered with too many layers of strings, drums, and distorted electric guitars. Lawson wrote or cowrote 10 of the album's 11 songs, but the best one is the only cover, a soul-meets-bluegrass take on Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On," which features a cool Hammond organ and a blistering mandolin solo. A few more like it would have made Chase the Sun stand out from the pack. --David Hill

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing, considering what it could have been.......2007-04-20

Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

5 out of 5 stars Always a pleaser.......2007-03-31

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

5 out of 5 stars JOHN WILLIAMS 40 Years of Film Music.......2007-01-10

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Music Magic & Memorabilia.......2006-12-13

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars John Williams: 40 Years of Outstanding Film Music.......2006-11-28

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

You've got to be pretty good to open for the pope. So it's no surprise that the Supertones, fresh off their January 1999 opening gig for the Papal One in front of 68,000 people in St. Louis, have a release worthy of any audience. Chase the Sun, the band's third album, builds on the ska-driven mold the group has forged and offers up another dose of riddims, rap, and rollicking fun. Both the opening "One Voice" and "Fade Away" showcase power-chord rock rhythms broken only by the skintight staccato horn section. "Away from You," the first single, is indeed radio-friendly and will draw strong comparisons to classic Bob Marley. The 'tones can even slow down, as evidenced by "Old Friend" and the final, reflective "Refuge (In Conclusion)." --Michael Lyttle

4 out of 5 stars the supertones strike yet again.......2002-01-29

this band amazes me over and over. their message is so blatent, powerful, and perfectly measured, i wish more christian artists could manage it. the supertones manage to give us a thelogy lesson and make it sound sooooo good in the process. if anyone is reading this who hasn't seen them live, i really recommend it...their live show is amazing and shows off their talent.
this is an amazingly committed band; to God, to their fans, and to their music and i think is shows in every release.
to those who are talking smack and accusing the supertones of selling out because they're 'not ska enough', just listen to FIF's 'cool enough for you' to find out exactly what i have to say about that.

5 out of 5 stars Nicely DONE!!.......2001-12-08

Well, them Supertones are growin' up nicely. Though not as totally addicting as their debut Adventures, but much more mature. Still just as fun to see live, this band spans a few gaps and shows their versatility in this release. A cut or two approach hip-hop rap and yet there's another cut that goes the other direction...all of the songs that fill the gap between Away From You and Grounded are worth every penny I spent on this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Chasing The S-O-N.......2001-09-03

Supertones dropped a bomb that permanently caused me to enjoy ska music. With plenty of trumpets, trombones, drums, bass, guitars and awesome messages, who wouldn't like to hear a lot from these guys?

This is my first Supertones and from the sound of it, definitely this wouldn't be the last. Their type of music circles in ska, rock and reggae category. What makes Supertones a unique band aside from some obvious L-E-T-T-E-R singing and making long tripping introduction is their God-centered songs. I urged them to continue chasing the qualities of the S-O-N' which we also as Christians should always bound to follow.

Here's a small info for each tracks. If you got favorites, well here's mine (11 favs out of 14):

1. One Voice - Opens the album with a loud bang. Convincing message about Christian unity. (7th*)

2. Hallelujah - Most fun song to sing, praise-like. Will enjoy the L-E-T-T-E-R singing with the group. (4th*)

3. In Between - A real in-between. Intro is a bit loud, but will surprise you with tidbits of ska-reggae tunes especially in the chorus. Message focused on decisions. (8th*)

4. Away From You - Radio-friendly with a lot of ska feeling, a wonderful combination. Duet with Crystal Lewis makes it perfect. Hear how the song was sincerely executed, with humble words 'There's no life away from You'. A blessing! (my 1st favorite*)

5. Dedication - Nice to listen when you are having a long trip. Song is dedicated to the warm memories of old friends with Christ. (6th*)

6. Grounded - This is like a kung-fu fighting song. Hoo, hah ' let's stand and fight for Christ. (10th*)

7. Sure Shot - 'I Wanna Be' or 'Wanna Be' is much a better title. 'I Wanna Be Like Jesus' is the best wannabes mentioned. Very cool song. (5th*)

8. Old Friend - A soft song with suave acoustic guitars. A simple song that raises questions on why choosing us as humble servants. But still at the end, we can say 'It's good to be with You, old friend' ' none other than Jesus. (2nd*)

9. Chase The Sun - Fast and loud - this became the carrier song of the album probably because the song highlights the OC Supertones ministry but lyrics are a little too weak.

10. Fade Away - Super upbeat, dominates the bass guitar. A plea to let doubts 'fade away'.

11. Hanani - 'Hanani, here am I' ' Hanani is a name in the Bible that means my grace and my mercy. Chorus soars with continuous proclamation. (9th*)

12. Revolution - A playful instrumental with a tune that's like a chase scene in a movie. Hear some shouts of 'Revolution!'. (11th*)

13. Health And Wealth - Another fast and loud track that says chasing 'health and wealth' should only be in moderation. Prioritized Christ above all.

14. Refuge - A touching acoustic song that tells us to 'Take refuge in His heart'. A nice song to hear at the end of the concert. Matt's clear voice and guitar smoothes the ear. (3rd*)

Never afraid to try other types of music. OC Supertones expertise is ska music - with powerful and great messages, this is a good try. You won't regret. 4 stars ' highly recommended.

Oh yeah. It's good. Very good. Excellent musicianship coupled with uncompromising lyrics. Very upbeat, fun music with substance.

5 out of 5 stars My first CD.......2001-08-27

Well, not necessarily, but I was raised in a very old fashioned and conservative church where they said that "Christian music nowadays is bad", becuase of this and that and everything else. Well, being the one who takes risks, I got off my 12 real old booty, and bought the Supertones Chase the Sun CD (secretly), and after listening to it, I was hooked and now... and the rest is down hill from there

4 out of 5 stars waxman is the man!.......2007-05-10

i love waxman's music. i think of his work in the same way i think of kurt weill's music. the melodies are so rich, so complex and the harmonies stir the soul. the diversity of musical genres both covered was also wide and rich.

but as much as love the gerhardt/rca recordings, i am not fond of the selection of works chosen to respresent waxman. it is good to know that there are many other cds of waxman's work out on the market to be found and appreciated.

but i do like the 'elegy for strings' from old acquaintance, the ' a place in the sun' suite and 'sunset boulevard'.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia and then some.......2006-02-20

Many times the score makes the movie. In this case Franz Waxman Film Scores contributed well. However as a stand alone collection this really does not have a place other than a once in a while listen to remember the particular movies.

Each piece is preformed well by the National Philharmonic Orchestra. However I do not see situation for listening to this album. It does not make good driving musing or reading music, or just sitting and listening to music. This does have a place if you are collecting various composers' works.

The list includes:
Prince Valiant (1954)
A Place in the Sun (1951)
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Sunset Boulevard (1950)
Old Acquaintance (1943)
Rebecca (1940)
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Taras Bulba (1962)

Many of the scores are used again in later movies. You can hear scores of Franz Waxman in about three hundred movies.

5 out of 5 stars Franz Waxman Tribute.......2005-10-12

This CD sounds splendid. It is very rich and moving. A PLACE IN THE SUN is beautiful. REBECCA is very pensive and very much what you may expect in a Hitchcock film. However, the best cut on this CD is from TARAS BULBA. What a piece of music. It is both rousing and inspirational. Outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful compilation of vintage Waxman.......2003-04-12

Charles Gerhardt was just the right conductor to revive these classic scores from the prolific film composer, Franz Waxman: His lush, melodramatic interpretations of the music do not fit every genre, but he feels right at home here with the sweeping melodies of the silver screen.

A good selection of Waxman's film music can be found here, including his most acclaimed, Sunset Boulevard. (It certainly has a sparkle that Joel McNeeley's recent rerecording seemed to lack, even if the score is not present here in its entirety.) Other highlights are the stirring themes of Prince Valiant and the eerie and sinister tones of his score for The Bride of Frankenstein. A particular favourite of mine is Rear Window, sadly absent here, though to my knowledge only one recording exists (Lalo Schifrin and the San Diego Pops, Hitchcock: Master of Mayhem): Fans can take solace in the fact that one of the Rear Window tunes appears here in its earlier form as we heard it in A Place in the Sun.

If you are a film music buff, this is definitely worth a place in your collection. Gerhardt captures the essence of Waxman perfectly.

5 out of 5 stars Franz Waxman's Music is Magic.......2001-10-02

This CD is a wonderful place to start your collection of Franz Waxman film music.

Waxman's sense of melodic line and tasteful harmonies are masterful. Of particular note are his suites from Prince Valiant, and The Bride of Frankenstein (also used in the old Flash Gordon serials). Charles Gerhardt does a fine job conducting this wonderful collection of jems.

I love movie theme music, especially action movies. The music on this CD is exactly like the music I heard in the theater. Wonderfully scored and mastered. You will love it!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Possibly better than the original recordings........2005-01-16

Let me start by saying that this is a great CD. If you have lowered your expectations at the sight of seeing "Pops Orchestra" on the cover, I beg you to reconsider. This isn't some thrown-together congregation of neophyte musicians, this is a glorious symphonic sound. I will go as far to say that most of the performed tracks on this CD are better than the original movie recordings. Also, Telarc, as I am learning more and more, seems to have mastered the art of recording and mastering the orchestra, as the quality of this CD is stellar, not to mention in surround sound!! This CD should be owned by anyone who is a fan of the symphonic film score.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for People who can't afford all these soundtracks.......2000-06-26

I have to say I was a little skeptical about a Cd that claimed to have all these great soundtracks on one CD. After listening to it though i was amazed at how close it was to actually having each sound track. I was thankful that I had not bought all of these soundtracks. This is a must have.

Album Description

Features songs from two hit Broadway shows by Howard Dietz and Arthur Schwartz starring Fred Astaire, Perry Como and more. Inside U.S.A. was recorded before the show was fully cast in order to beat the 1948 ASCAP strike, which explains why non-cast members performed some of these songs. Most tracks on CD for the first time!

5 out of 5 stars Great material on both scores.......2005-09-16

"Inside U.S.A." was a huge hit revue with the unique Bea Lillie, Jack Haley of "The Wizard of Oz" and such future names as Carl Reiner (not on the recordings). "Atlanta" was apparently cut as it doesn't appear in any programs of the show, and it is revue material with topical references so younger Broadway fans may wonder what the hell Bea is singing about (Atlanta was known for it's federal prison, imagine her in a neat striped suit and matching pillbox hat with a ball and chain to twirl), but her spirit was perhaps as well captured on these tracks as it ever was in a studio recording. "The Bandwagon" is also wonderful, Fred Astaire at his stage height just before he went Hollywood (with his sister Adele, a bigger star then), and a pioneer recording that was LP length before that existed. All the material by Dietz and Schwartz in it is classic and showed up in the very different film 25 years later. But these recordings may be better, and the sound is brilliant for the time. So, a bargain and let's hope the trove of theater recordings continues to be mined - how about all the Decca recordings of Bea, including the unreleased 60s recordings as well as the two lps from her legendary "Evening with Beatrice Lillie"? (See the Joyce Grenfell "Requests" recent CD for a handfull of the Decca material, beautifully remastered as bonus cuts).

Album Description

This 28-track collection highlights the astounding career as director and producer of Steven Spielberg, whose films are inexorably linked with the symphonic beauty of John Williams' scores. With five Oscar(r) wins and 41 nominations, Williams is a master of his art. The set also features other Spielberg collaborations including Quincy Jones, Jerry Goldsmith, and Billy Goldenberg. From "Duel" (a premiere recording) to "The Terminal," this release is a journey through movie magic.

3 out of 5 stars mediocre mess, nonetheless worth having for some.......2005-07-07

If you've never purchased one of these Silva Screen best-of score CDs, let me first say this: unless you're a true film-score nut (like me), don't do it. Just don't. They really aren't terribly good. This one, like most, is played by The city of Prague Philharmonic, and it's not a terribly talented orchestra. They play very flatly, they miss notes, their orchestrator makes odd changes to composers' music. The end result of all this is that if you're familiar with the film versions of the pieces of music they're playing, it can be, frankly, a bit difficult to listen to.

That said, there is one decent -- decent, mind you -- reason to buy this CD. That's for the five-minute track of music from Spielberg's "Duel." It isn't great music, by any means, but if you're a Spielberg fanatic, this is the only release there has ever been (to my knowledge, at least) of music from that movie.

To be fair, not all of the tracks here are poorly done. "Hymn to the Fallen" comes off fairly well, and so does the music from "A.I." and "The Terminal" -- and the "Minority Report" theme is actually quite good. But much of the rest just doesn't sound right, so if you're looking for a quick way to assemble a quality overview of Spielberg music, this isn't the way to go.

That brings me to my final complaint, which is that "The Lost World" is omitted entirely! There were several good themes done for that movie; it was no mere rehash of "Jurassic Park."

For the seriously devoted only.

This is one not to be missed...so many highlights and stand outs...from one spectrum of comedy, romance, drama, suspense, action, adventure...to the other of horror, war, thrillers and classics that linger from decade to decade...many have sold millions in Soundtracks, but here in this collection they all appear compliments of conductors Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raines...conducting The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus...though different arrangements in some cases, still a very good representation in tribute of this legendary director and icon.

5 out of 5 stars Just Buy It Already!.......2007-04-23

Awesome music! I don't hand out 5 stars easily. I listen to it at least 3 times every time I put it in the player. His voice is incredible. One of the best "alternative country" cd's I've ever heard, and I have a huge collection of all kinds of music. Please please give this guy a listen. One of those "should be famous" but I'm kinda glad he isn't because he'd probably try to go more mainstream. Love it!

5 out of 5 stars Underrated artist.......2004-01-18

I remember seeing the video for Shannon Lawson's first single "Goodbye On A Bad Day" on CMT back in the spring of 2002. Not only did I find him attractive, but I was blown away by the song. It's emotional and intense, and he has a really strong voice that lends well to the song, and the ones on this album. Sadly, he was dropped by MCA, but he's signed with Equity Records (Clint Black's label) so hopefully we will be hearing more from him soon. CHASE THE SUN is a nice debut album.

The title track is a nice country rocker, that would have been a great single. I like the opening uptempo song "This Old Heart", a song about heartbreak. What would a country album be without one? "Dream Your Way To Me" is a really nice midtempo song with a great chorus and great vocals from him. Other favorites include "Superstar", "Where Would I Go", "Are You Happy Now" and his inspired bluegrass cover of the classic Marvin Gaye song "Let's Get It On".

A really strong debut album. I hope he finds more success with his next release, because country radio really missed out on the talent on this album. Lets hope they wise up with his next one!

5 out of 5 stars Chase The Sun.......2003-12-26

This artist is the most original breath of fresh air to hit country music since Johnny Cash. You won't be sorry.

2 out of 5 stars I agree with the editorial review........2003-06-18

Shannon Lawson is capable of a much better album. I saw him down in Nashville when he was with the Galoots, and it was amazing! If they were to put out a CD I'm sure it would be one of my favorites. Shannon has a voice and a talent for bluegrass music and that's what Nashville should have let him do on his first solo CD. Instead they gave it this generic, overproduced sound, leaving Shannon sound like everyone else. With the way bluegrass is selling these days, it's a shame that Shannon couldn't showcase his enormous talent in the proper arena...

5 out of 5 stars A VOICE TO WATCH.......2003-03-25

Shannon Lawson has a great, powerful, rich and emotionally textured voice, and uses it aptly on his debut album. Although the arrangement for "Goodbye on a Bad Day" may seem a bit bombastic (ala Jim Steinmann or even Michael Bolton), it works with this song in establishing the complex layers of a relationship. I find it quite a stunning performance.
Lawson balances the CD with up-tempo and power ballads, and works effectively well on "Where Do I Go" and "Are You Happy Now?".
The musicianship is top notch and Lawson's cover of "Let's Get It On" is as off the wall as you'd expect in a country singer covering a soul song. But, it's a good reworking and Lawson pulls it off.
RECOMMENDED.
