Tracy Lawrence emerged in the '90s with a slew of Top 10 and No. 1 singles that too often submerged his drawling twang in the arena-rock bombast Nashville favored. This time he succeeds--to a point--in downshifting to something more basic. One can't argue with the integrity of the rebound ballad "Getting Back Up" or the sweetly romantic "Meant to Be." The small-town-Samaritan tale "That Was Us," "She Loved the Devil Out of Me," and the beguiling, relaxed swing of "It's Got You All Over It" are all impressive. Earthier production, however, can't ameliorate the slick banality of "Life Don't Have to Be So Hard," a litany of clichéd down-home imagery, or the cut-and-dried qualities that plague several other tracks. "What a Memory," seemingly conceived as raw, George Jones-styled pathos, reeks of calculation. The intentions here were honorable--if only more of the material measured up.

True Country.......2007-06-30
It doesn't get any countrier than Tracy Lawrence. He has a true country voice and his voice gets better with every release of a new CD.
The first single "Find Out Who Your Friends Are" is a great country song about when you are down on your luck your true friends will show up and help you through it. This is also his first number 1 in a long time. The second single is "Til I Was A Daddy Too" another great song about how his father raised him up and he never realized how things are until he was a father himself. Every song on this CD has hit possibilities. I have always been a Tracy Lawrence fan and I always will be. We are going to see him in concert on July 28th in Lafayette, Indiana.

I have to agree with the reviews here - Tracy has not disappointed his fans. The songs are great - the choice of material is great - even the cover is great. I was very happy to hear he was putting out a new album and the wait was worth it. Having Tim and Kenny singing with him is just icing on a truly great cake!!

Country's honey-voiced hopeless romantic gleans his career with this satisfying collection featuring rerecordings of 14 hits, his original version of "Paint me a Birmingham," and two new numbers. He's made fresh gold with "Used to the Pain," which sounds like a classic Tracy Lawrence ballad, full of regret over a heartbroken past, yet dappled with hope for the future. There's also "If I Don't Make It Back," a sentimental male-bonding story of a departing soldier's words to his buddies with a tearjerker ending. The older tunes, like "Birmingham" and "Today's Lonely Fool," stand time's test, as does the undiminished emotional palette of Lawrence's voice. Although most of these numbers are sad or starry-eyed honky-tonk, the set ends with the rowdy "If the Good Die Young," a rocker with the kickin' line "I'm gonna live forever if the good die young." But with more #1 hits than Glen Campbell, Ernest Tubb, and a host of other legends, Lawrence has already attained his own brand of longevity. --Ted Drozdowski
Album Description
There are 17 songs in this hits collection. I re-recorded 14 of my past hits, included the original version of "Paint Me A Birmingham," and recorded two brand new songs. In making this record, I got the chance to study myself as a vocalist and as a person. I listened to what I did with "Sticks And Stones" all the way through what I did with "Paint Me A Birmingham." It was pretty educational to go back through 14 years of my life and pick myself apart. I learned a lot about myself.
We were intent on recapturing the magic for this CD. I wanted the cuts to be as close sonically to the original recordings as we could make them. We matched tempos, snare sounds and guitar licks--everything. I even sang along with the originals to try to get my phrasing as close as possible. We did all that we could, short of stepping back in time, to get as close to reliving the moments those records were recorded.
We worked with a lot of the same players that played on my original recordings. We talked about the studios we played in. We cut up and reminisced about all of the good times on the road during those years. We talked about the path my music had traveled with different producers. I could hear my growth and I could hear the strain in my voice during the times when there was pain in my life. It brought it all back to life for me. In a lot of ways I found the whole process healthy and therapeutic.

Great collection of Tracy's songs. There's really nothing on this CD that I didn't like.
best cd ive bought.......2007-04-18
I really think this is the best cd I've ever bought. Every single song on the cd is amazing. This is definitely an excellent purchase.
Wow.......2007-04-04
What can be said about this album? It is WONDERFUL!!!!! I've been a fan of his for 16 years and will be one for many more years to come. His songs are great and his live shows are FANTASTIC!!! He makes you feel like a friend during his shows. His music is terrific!!!!!!!
This CD is the Best!!!.......2007-03-11
Six months ago I didn't even know who Tracy Lawrence was, and I kept hearing one of his songs on the radio and finally through much effort searched him out and bought this CD. It is my favorite! I have listened to it to and from work every day since I bought it (four months ago). I love all of the songs.
Great CD, A re-recording notice woulda been nice though........2006-06-05
I have to give this CD 3 stars only because there was no notice anywhere on the CD cover mentioning that this CD contains new recordings of his old songs instead of being a true "Greatest Hits" collection CD. In fact, the sticker on the cover leads you to believe otherwise. None-the-less, the recordings are extremely close to the originals and he does include the original "Paint Me A Birmingham" which makes it an ok buy.

Fantastic Hits by an excellent country voice.......2006-10-20
I have enjoyed Tracy Lawrence's songs and videos on CMT and GMC for over 10 years, and this CD has his very best songs on it. Every song is excellent, especially Texas Tornado, I See It Now, and Alibis. For fans of Tracy Lawrence and country music, you can't go wrong with collection of his hits.
Great album.......2005-11-09
Here is an artist that could have easily been swept under the rug, but whose music would never allow it. Tracy Lawrence is a true Traditionalist, with a voice like none other. While the likes of Garth Brooks was jumping around on stage with a Madonna-like headset, Tracy was doing straight-forward, hardcore, music that reached out through the speakers and grabbed you. Here was a singer that needed no gimmicks and you basically got what you saw; wish there were more like him, and I'm glad to see his return to the stage. This album is a collection of some of the best country songs of the '90's; and of course, they're all Tracy Lawrence. There are some true gems here, inlcuding the pure "Sticks and Stones", "Is That a Tear", and "Can't Break it To My Heart". There are also the more rowdy numbers "Good Die Young" and "Better Man Better Off"; all of which received their fair share of airplay in the last decade. I dont recall what happened, but Tracy appeared to have fallen off the edge of the earth in the late -90's, and his void was never filled. Perhaps it was the intro of the Mega Pop Star Garth, Shania, Faith & Tim Hill? In any event, this album is a chance to hear one of the finest "modern" voices of our music. A+
The Best of Tracy Lawrence.......2005-08-19
I love the entire CD and it isn't often you can say that! I can't get a radio station at work so I listen to CD's and this is one I listen to at least twice a week. Alibis and Texas Tornado have always been favorites of mine and they still are. I definitely recommend it for any Tracy fan.
very good.......2004-11-24
Tracy Lawrence is a fantastic live performer, but his studio albums are plagued by inconsistency. When he has decent material, he turns in a fine performance; when the material sucks, you start feeling a little sorry for him. This greatest hits is wonderful because it collects many of Lawrence's biggest hits on one disc. (ALL of the hits are not here, as another reviewer noted.) Lawrence uses his admittedly strange voice to good effect, and every song is a keeper, making this a very enjoyable listen. Many of these songs are modern classics. And if you like this stuff, check out his Live album -- one of the best live albums in the entire country genre.
Tracy Is Excellent.......2004-04-21
This man is a great singer, and has quality lyrics to his music. Why is he banned from some country stations (And underplayed by others)? It is not because of his personal life. Guys like Hank Williams, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, and Johnny Cash had stormy lives, but were NOT neglected. Instead, the reason is, quality country is not rewarded these days (Check out how seldom you hear Sherrie Austin on the radio?).Lawrence is in the top 5 singers in country today (Along with Sherrie, George Strait, Toby Keith, and Alan Jackson). Songs like "Time Marches On", "Texas Tornado", "Stars Over Texas", "Sticks And Stones" and "Renegades, Rebels And Rogues" should be country classics, and the rest of the CD is not far behind. You cannot get a better single disk greatest hits CD (Except "Latest Greatest Straitest Hits"). This should be a must in your country collection.

At 23 years old, Tracy Lawrence helped usher in the "hat act" era in country music with this highly successful 1991 debut. Using traditional country instruments to create a polished modern sound, Lawrence and producer James Stroud concocted tasty, accessible radio fare with the upbeat "Runnin' Behind" and the midtempo ballad "Today's Lonely Fool." The album set the tone for a series of successful albums by Lawrence that balance fun country romps with romantic balladry. Oddly, the turmoil of Lawrence's private life--which includes parking lot shootings, highway chases, and brief and stormy marriages--never seeped into his music. On record, Lawrence maintains a mature, happy-go-lucky persona, no matter what goes on behind the scenes. --Michael McCall
Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2007-07-12
Hey, how can you go wrong with Tracy. He's great no matter what he sings.
Tracy is the best.......2002-02-24
This is one of Tracy's first albums, he just keeps getting better with each one he puts out! Tracy can sing a love song like no other. He can also get you up and dancing the very next song.
Great combination of modern and traditional country.......2002-01-09
Sticks And Stones, Tracy Lawrence's debut CD from 1991, introduced a young, vibrant new vocalist to country music, one of many who followed in the wake of Garth Brooks' amazing success story. Country in the early 90s retained enough of a traditional element to satisfy older fans (unlike today), while still establishing the music as of its time and not dated. Tracy Lawrence was one of the long line of country males often categorised as "hat acts" and to the general public, all too similar to really have clear identities of their own. In Lawrence's case, this would not be a fair accusation, as his soulful vocals made him an all too rare example of an instantly recognisable vocalist in a sea of clones. His debut album was surprisingly (and to his credit) dominated by ballads and mournful country heartbreakers. There are only three uptempo songs on the album, which he performs well. It's the ballads that he excels at, including his two co-writes, Dancin' To Sweet 17 and Froze Over. The best song on the album, and later covered by George Jones (a compliment in itself) is Somebody Paints The Wall, the story of one of life's losers who seems to encounter disappointment at every turn in his life. Tracy Lawrence has long since established a long hit-making career in country music which continues to this day. This album remains one of his best.
Today's Lonely Fool........2000-06-14
Tracy Brings Out The Goods Of Country Music. Sure He Can Sing Like George Strait. He Says That He Is Alone On The Midtemple Ballad "Today's Lonely Fool". The Upbeat "Runnin' Behind" Can Make You Get Up And Dance. The Title Track Was Also A Dance Ballad Too And It Became His First Number 1 Hit.
Very country......what a talent he is!!.......1999-06-30
Tracy Lawrence is now what I believe to be the best singer with the most range in country music. This album was only a stepping stone for him. Buy it and I am sure you will approve!!

Mainstream country radio rarely challenges its listeners--after all, the airwaves are really about advertising, not music--and so the consultants nod approvingly at songs with the fewest rough edges. Tracy Lawrence, a hit-maker despite his odd, muffled tenor, knows how to survive both radio's choppy seas and his own frequently turbulent life; on Strong he presents a more mature look at both. There's some ripe sentimentality in "Paint Me a Birmingham," about a relationship gone bad. And "A Far Cry From You," about a man who physically leaves but is still shedding tears, offers the kind of wordplay radio loves. Yet Lawrence can deliver country's core values without schmaltz (the title song, a tribute to single mothers), and he can bring a lump to a listener's throat with a restrained vocal and powerful lyric ("Think of Me," which salutes firefighters, cops, EMS workers, and the military). But he's never stronger than on the old-fashioned country shuffle of "Sawdust on Her Halo" and on "The Questionnaire," which dramatically exposes the dead-end truth of a marriage. If Lawrence could ever pay more attention to his own instincts rather than the dictates of consultants, he'd leave behind a legacy stronger than just his chart positions. --Alanna Nash
Customer Reviews:
Not much separates Tracy from the rest.......2005-09-05
Yet today this CD is ranked over #22000 on Amazon, yet Toby Keith's in ranked #95. But honestly, this CD is better!! So, you get artists like Tracy and David Lee Murphy who are just as good if not better than Toby Keith (all equally great in my book), but such a huge commerical discrepancy doesn't make sense. Buy this album so we have can have parity in the universe!! Or, stop buying Toby's. Cheers!!
Not as Strong as you would expect.......2005-03-12
Tracy Lawerence has to be one of my favorite country artist. I almost bought this album new. I would have not been happy to have spent $18 on this CD. It is a good album, and if you like Tracy, well it is a better than good country album. The song that help me to buy the album was Paint me a Birmingham. It is a super song, but with the exception of maybe 2 others, there is just a lot of genric type songs on this album. Strong was an alright song. Stones would probably be my second top song on this album, and notice you have not heard it on the radio. Only buy this album at a full price if you love Tracy. It is a good album for less than $5. Thanks
Great 2-Step Music!!!.......2005-02-17
Sawdust on Her Halo is a fabulous song to shuffle!!! Strong is a very emotional album that seems to really show Tracy's affection for women. I would recommend it to every female I know (and I already know the guys like it!!). There isn't a song on the album that I didn't like. A must-have to add to your Tracy Lawrence and country music collections!!!
Tracy Lawrence Makes a "STRONG" Return.......2005-01-27
Tracy Lawrence has one of those voices that is so familiar with every album. And so distinguishable that you know it's him the moment you hear his song. He can easily wrap around your emotions and get right to the core of your feelings. He truly has the "Country Sound", and this CD proves that from some songs that sound like the older traditional country that he does best and some that are the modern sound from today.
This CD touches on many subjects from family, love, heartbreak, and things that happen in ordinary people's lives. There's something for everyone to relate too. Along with a couple tracks that include that infamous "growl" that makes Tracy unique.
A CD has never been more appropriately named than "Strong" is for Tracy Lawrence. If you are a fan of Country music or Tracy Lawrence you need to give his new album "Strong a Listen"
Only because i can't give 0 stars.......2005-01-22
i am not a big country fan. I like some stuff (Mainly Tim McGraw, Toby Keith & Dixie Chicks) I do like "songs" of certain artists.
Tracy Lawrence is one of those people I like certain songs. Alibis, If The World Had A Front Porch, Renegades, Rebels & Rogues, Texas Tornado & Time Marches On.
I own 3 of his cd's. I had 4 until i sold this one on ebay. I have never heard such garbage. "Paint Me A Birmingham" what the hell is that?! I thought he had at least some talent, but tripe like Birmingham is awful. The rest of the cd fares no better. I would do one of my usual reviews where i do song by song but i can't find anything nice to say about any, that's ANY song on this CD.
Coincidentally, i saw him live on the rocking the roadhouse tour a few years back with Mark Chesnutt & Joe Diffie. Not a bad talent live. Maybe he should go back to the way he was.

With his cute strawberry-blond moustache and broad-brimmed cowboy hat, Tracy Lawrence comes across at first as just one more of Nashville's young matinee idols. He's a lot better than most of them, though, and I See It Now proves he's that rare honky-tonk singer who can make you laugh at love's foolishness on one song and cry at love's agony on the next. Lawrence's '93 album, Alibis, was the best collection of comic country songs since Roger Miller's heyday; I See It Now isn't quite as satisfying, but it does confirm Lawrence can be quite effective as a balladeer. There's no better evidence of Lawrence's honky-tonk credentials than his ability to hold his own with John Anderson on the delightfully exaggerated duet, "Hillbilly with a Heartache." The album's title tune is an old-fashioned honky-tonk ballad about a man who realizes his ex loves her new man more than she ever loved him; Lawrence spices the lyrics with a paradoxical mixture of envy and congratulations. Paul Nelson and Kenny Beard, who wrote some of the best songs on Alibis, wrote that one, another breakup gem called "As Any Fool Can See," and "If the World Had a Front Porch," a bit of down-home philosophy redeemed by its sparkling details. Unfortunately, the quality of the songwriting falls off pretty sharply after the above four songs. It's too bad, for Lawrence is one of the most interesting young artists in Nashville today, and he has the chance to become the premier comic country singer of his generation. --Geoffrey Himes

A MUST HAVE.......2004-07-17
This CD is simply a country classic, there is not a bad track on it, with the exception of "Tracy Lawrence Live" this is his best. "If The World Had A Front Porch" and "Texas Tornado" are TWO of his THREE best ("Renegades, Rebels, and Rogues" is the other). I love "Hillbilly with a Heartache" as well (Great piano work in it). The problem with Tracy Lawrence is this: The more you listen to him, the more you realize, you need to be a completist, he is that good, this CD is a MUST HAVE in your collection.
A great album.......2001-07-05
I think that Tracy Lawrence has one of the best voices in country music. He has a distintive sound that separates him from the crowd. And he certainly does have a knack for the humourous songs. Better than a lot of artists today. And each and every song on this album is a good song. The booklet includes all lyrics and some photos of Tracy.
TRACY IS THE BEST!!.......1999-11-02
I remember back when this album was first released...I was a freshmen in high school and I had been very sick for a week! I sent a friend with $$ to buy this cd for me, and it sure made me feel better right away! This has got to be my favorite album by Tracy and I listen to it everyday still!
It was really good........1999-01-06
it was really good, although my personal favorites are sticks and stones, alibis, and time marches on. HIS voice alone is irresistably sexy and i would buy and like anything he sang, heck i'D buy a tape of him if all he did was talk.ama
Tracy Lawrence is the BEST.......1998-11-30
Tracy Lawrence is the one who turned me on to country music with his wonderful voice and lyrics. This album is great with "If the World Had a Front Porch" and the duet with John Anderson about the "Hillbilly with a Heartache" is wonderfully funny. Hopefully Tracy Lawrence will be around for a long time.

This is the best Country sound of all time........2007-07-03
Tracy Lawrence has been a true country boy for a long time and he sings the true country sound of long ago. No alternative country here. "Is that A Tear" is the best and the title track should be a classic country song. Did I say that I love Tracy Lawrence and I am so proud to own his music.
add this to your collection.......2007-01-31

Overall, this is a good CD in traditional country style with the title song being one of his very best ever. But, there is not enough room to list all of his "very best ever" songs!!!! Another MUST for Tracy Lawrence fans - as are ALL his CD's!!
To any country music lover i would reccommend this album.......1999-02-09

I'M A HUGE COUNTRY FAN, AND TRACY LAWRENCE FAN. THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING CD. TRACY UNLIKE OTHER ARTISTS WHO HAVE GONE POP, KEEPS THAT COUNTRY SOUND TO HIS MUSIC. HE HAS AN OUTSTANDING VOICE. PERSONALLY I LIKE HIS OLDER CDS BUT THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING CD... A MUST BUY.
GREAT ALBUM...EVERY SONG IS GOOD!!.......1999-11-02
This is one of my favorite albums by Tracy and one of my favorite of all my favorites. Tracy is the best singer there is in my opinion. This album has GREAT songs from the first to the very last one. Usually there is one or two songs that I like less than the others. But on this Tracy CD I love them all and could not pick a favorite one.
