As engaging as some of Jim Lauderdale's recent genre exercises have been, The Hummingbirds finds his creativity flying free and unfettered. The result is his freshest-sounding collection since 1994's Pretty Close to the Truth. No other country release is likely to name check both Dante's Inferno ("Eternal") and Salvador Dali ("Rollin' the Dice"), evoke the metaphysical yearnings of "I'm Happiest When I'm Moving" and the bluegrass-tinged "New Cascade," or find primarily acoustic arrangements sparking such dynamically electric interplay. Vocal support from Emmylou Harris and Julie Miller highlights the album-opening "Midnight Will Become Day," Bekka Bramlett's harmony adds a soulful dimension to "Jacob's Ladder" (one of two Lauderdale collaborations with longtime Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter), and guest musicians including mandolinist Sam Bush, guitarist Tony Rice, and fiddlers Stuart Duncan and Tim O'Brien, who provide stellar backing. Although the rest of the material is new, one of the album's standout tracks finds Lauderdale resurrecting "I Know Better Now," previously recorded by Kelly Willis. --Don McLeese

When gospel quartets age--and hey, this is the Dixie Hummingbirds' 75th anniversary here--they're required to make crossover records that match them up with a wide array of pop musicians. Since the Dixie Hummingbirds already did that for their 70th anniversary on Music in the Air, this time they match themselves with a sure-footed backing band of rock and soul all-stars including Dr. John, Larry Campbell, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm. "God's Radar" clues the listener in that something different is going on here: it starts off like a bluegrass tune, then the guitars kick in and they're pure honky-tonk, while the bridge is a Cajun riff. The weirdest thing about the song is how well it works. The same can be said for the entire album, which mixes contemporary songs with traditional classics. "Too Many Troubles" matches swampy blues-rock to a mournful song written by Buddy and Julie Miller, with a nice, golden-age-style lead vocal by William Bright. The sole survivor of the original group is lead baritone Ira Tucker, who joined the `Birds in 1938 at the age of 13, and he still delivers rich bursts of inspired shout-singing that's absolutely goose bump-inducing. Gospel is more than the root of soul music, it's a vital, wholly American and very alive music; this expertly-produced and laidback album presents sweet proof. --Mike McGonigalCustomer Reviews:

A truly vibrant recording; BIG fun; completely uplifting........2003-11-19
Occasionally and too-infrequently I stumble across some music so good that it reminds me of why I got into music in the first place, way-back in the fuzzy past. Well this Dixie Hummingbirds record does just that. It's completely alive in spirit and music.
I picked it up sight unseen because I always liked the classic Hummingbirds stuff, and because the CD's backup band is really intriguing. What a pleasant surprise. This record is flat-out exciting and even dance-able. Hats off to Larry Campbell for the production, and hats off too, of course, to Ira Tucker, Sr. and the rest of the Hummingbirds for their incomparable virtuosity, energy, and commitment to excellence.
Song Number 6, "When I Go Away" is my favorite, an example of just how rhythmically inventive and totally exciting classic gospel vocal arrangement can be. Everything's great though. Mr. Tucker, Sr. joined the Hummingbirds so long ago... His rich baritone voice is as strong as ever. This really IS roots music, performed by the actual originators. Don't think twice about this one... it is all meat and no gristle. Well worth the investment.

Joined by an all-star cast of friends and fellow recording artists, the Dixie Hummingbirds, arguably the most powerful jubilee and traditional-style black gospel quartet of the century, issue Music in the Air in celebration of their 70-year reign. Traipsing across stylistic musical boundaries, the still formidable group pushes the envelope with reconfigured arrangements of traditionals such as "How Great Thou Art" and "Come Ye Disconsolate," the former featuring a powerful a cappella lead by Wynonna Judd in juxtaposition to the interlocked harmony of the 'Birds. While not the dead-on quality of its prime-time recordings, Music in the Air is testament to the quartet's undeniable might and influence in both the sacred and secular worlds of music. Exciting contributions include Mavis Staples's enthused lead on "I Need Thee," a collaboration with the boisterous Shirley Caesar on "Praise Him," and Paul Simon's updated "Love Me Like a Rock," the original hit on which the 'Birds sang backup in 1973. --Paige La Grone

"Underrated Pop".......2005-03-12
The Australian based Hummingbirds are an example of vastly underatted pop music. True to their name, these birds (2 girls and 2 guys) harmonize well together in a flurry of fast pop tunes. You can tell they (unashamedly) had alot of fun in making just 2 albums and a few singles to date.
The Hummingbirds had a sound that was uniquely their own.
This collection of their songs is more like a collection of all their favorite tunes rather than a greatest hits collection.
I recommend you give them a listen. This album is just another example of great pop music that "flew under the radar"

Tuesday,
Word Gets Around,
Blush,
In a Vow

Blues of green "Hummingbirds".......2005-01-25
It kicks off with the catchy "Hummingbirds," which swells up into a trippy soundscape. It's especially fun because of the whimsical songwriting ("Godiva Girl/Swimming in chocolate/Winged foil heart cardinals..."). Continuing that is "Alice," an exquisite slower song that puts Annette Strean's lovely vocals to good use.
Well, those are the songs from the album -- on to the EP-only songs. "Run Anne Run" is a fun song that sounds like whimsical dancepop. And finally there's "Illumine," which is mostly composed of catchy beats and languid stretches of spacey keyboard. It's nothing short of gorgeous.
"Hummingbirds" does more than showcase two good songs -- it also happens to show everything that Venus Hum can do, from clubby pop to exquisite electronica. At the end of it, it's hard not to want more from this band, which hasn't received a fraction of the attention they deserve.
Annette Strean belongs up with Hope Sandoval and Beth Gibbons as a trip-hop vocalist -- her singing is strong, sweet and able to swell as the music does. Speaking of which, Kip Kibin and Tony Miracle do amazing things with their synth and keyboard, producing trippy beats that would sound cold if they weren't so fun and playful.
A good introduction to Venus Hum is the "Hummingbirds" EP, with its mix of dancey trip-hop and lush ballads. Definitely worth getting.
