5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Songs That Made Her a Star:.......2000-06-18

It was her first several motion pictures that resulted in Deanna Durbin's becoming the highest paid female star of her time; and it is from those movies that this anthology has been taken. The selections are a good mixture of everything from operatic arias to popular tunes of the day. The original recordings are over sixty years old; but modern engineering techniques have enhanced them to "better than new" sound. If you, like so many others, are rediscovering this remarkable young artist, this album will provide a great deal of pleasure...for the music, and as an excellent example of nostalgic memorabilia.

5 out of 5 stars Quality late eighties country.......2004-05-04

Baillie and the boys is somewhat of a misnomer - for most of their existence, they have been just Kathie Baillie and her husband, Michael Bonagura. A third member joined them for a few years (hence the name Boys) and was still with them when they recorded their first two albums but left before this album was recorded. Kathy, possessor of a pure, clear voice, is the lead singer and also plays acoustic guitar. Michael adds some backing vocals but mainly plays guitars - acoustic and electric.

Most of the songs here are originals but there are two incredible covers - as good as any other versions of the songs that I've heard. These are Perfect (originally by Fairground Attraction who had a British number one hit with hit) and Fool such as I (originally a country song by Hank Snow but best known via Elvis Presley's cover).

The remaining songs include Can't stand to be unhappy (later covered by Bobbie Cryner) and You better do better (later covered by Brenda Lee) but I've not heard any other versions of the remaining songs, all of which are excellent.

If you enjoy country music of the late eighties and early nineties, you ought to like Baillie and the boys. I never got round to buying any of their other albums but I was assured that this was the best album they ever did. It is certainly difficult to image how they could have recorded a better one.

    4 out of 5 stars Spirituals Masterpiece.......2007-01-22

This is a northern European choir doing southern negro spirituals. Sounds odd but it is one of the best that I have heard. The best single is "Ain't Got Time To Die".

5 out of 5 stars A winner from start to finish.......2000-11-22

A cyberfriend from the N. Y. Times Classical Music Forum, an American ex-patriot living in Sweden, knowing my liking for the music of Paul Winter, particularly his sax/organ duets with Paul Halley, recommended this Anders Paulsson album. His reasoning was straightforward: This unique and totally fresh album includes three such duets: Lullaby for Joe Rubin, Anthem for the Homeless, and Toccata in D, all written by Paulsson. They are brilliant, and brilliantly performed, in a style that is quite unlike the "Cathedral blues" style of Winter and Halley, now celebrating the 20th year of their collaboration.

Paulsson is an instrumentalist on this horn the likes of which I don't believe I've ever heard. I consider myself a "student" of Paulsson's instrument, thanks to Winter, and am therefore familiar with other European soprano saxophonists such as Jan Garbarek and John Harle. But I was totally unprepared for Paulsson's technique, which is, in a word, staggering. While I continue to prefer Paul Winter's way with phrasing and improvisation, and, most particularly, embrochure and tone quality, I cheerfully concede that Anders Paulsson may well be the most proficient technician of this often-misplayed instrument. (Think "Kenny G" to get my point.) Pride of place in these three duets clearly goes to Toccata in D, Paulsson's Op. 20, a tour de force for him and Andrew Canning on organ.

But the album title is about singing, and singing of some well-known and not-so-well-known spirituals is the main focus of the album. And the singing is simply drop-dead gorgeous, by the St. Jacob's Chamber Choir of Stockholm. Led for more than fifteen years by Gary Graden, another American ex-patriot, their voices, and their clear English diction, might well have come from a gospel choir in these United States. The opening track, Deep River, is worth the cost of the album by itself.

Approximately in the middle of the album is a cantata in seven parts entitled Feet of Jesus, based on texts by Langston Hughes, the great African-American "blues poet" of the Harlem Renaissance. Written by Judith Cloud, a composer from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, this cantata is the centerpiece and the true highlight of the album, notwithstanding all the good points already mentioned about both the spirituals and Paulsson's own compositions and duets. Very moving; beautifully done.

In preparing this review, I of course had the opportunity to read Professor Cloud's comments about her composition and its inspiration, written elsewhere on this album page. It's a small world indeed when one reads that a large part of her inspiration came from a performance by Anders Paulsson that she had earlier heard in the marvelous acoustic space of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, where Paul Winter is the principal artist in residence.

I thank my American friend living in Sweden for bringing this terrific album to my attention. Otherwise, I might well have missed it completely. Here's hoping that my thoughts on it will work the same wonders on you that the music has on me.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......1999-09-01

This is no easy listening or spectacular commercial gospel. But this music is so warm and heartfelt it really touches you deep inside. Astonishing work by one of the best choirs in the world.

5 out of 5 stars I give this recording my highest recommendation!.......1999-05-26

Gary Graden's Kammarkör proves, again, the power of music to soothe the spirit and inspire the soul. "Spiritual" not just as it evokes the rich repertoire of African-American song, this recording moves the spirit in contemporary ways from Anders Paulsson's plaintive soprano sax to John Williams's (baritone) urgent rendition of "Before the Marvel of the Night" and the concluding South African "Honono." Williams joins Marymal Holmes (soprano) in an exquisitely beautiful rendition of "Bright Morning Stars" also arranged by Paulsson. Judith Cloud's "Feet of Jesus" is, from warm saxophone introduction to dramatic close, an elegant addition to American spiritual music. Cloud sets the Langston Hughes poem perfectly. Her spirited "Shout" and "Fire" complement a loving "Gather up in the arms of your pity the sick, the depraved, the desperate, the tired...." reaching the innermost recesses of the spirit and pulling from it something redeeming of humankind. The recording techniques are first-rate. To those who expect not only professional technique, but also heartfelt music, put this CD in your player and you'll never take it out!

4 out of 5 stars Re-listening to OZ from Oz.......2004-01-28

I've been relistening to the original original cast recording of this show. I'm really starting to enjoy it and find it quite entertaining. It has its own wonderful quality and well worth listening to over and over again.
It definitely would NOT have worked on Broadway with these arrangements because it retains too much the quality of a lounge act; not nearly 'big' enough for Broadway. BUT the performances are really terrific and the period arrangements are true to form.
I wish PRETTY KEEN TEEN, SURE THING BABY and TAUGHT BY EXPERTS had been kept in the Broadway production
      Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars OH BOY, WHAT A JOY, THE SHOWS A HIT!!.......2002-12-11

The Boy From Oz had its world opening at HER MAJESTY'S THEATRE Sydney in 1998. As a theatre lover and seen over 70 shows, this musical stands out as #1 around Australia and soon to hit and rule the world.
      The music is outstanding.
      The cast is the best.
      The show PHENOMINAL!!!!

The songs lift your spirits beyond belief. They just make you feel you are up there on that stage with the cast. You would understand why the songs are on this cd and the order they are in as they happen in the show if you saw it first, but trust me you can listen to the cd before you see the show.
The cast featured on this cd are Australias best!
TODD MCKENNEY (Singin'In the Rain, Crazy for You, 42nd Street, Strictly Ballroom{movie})just to name a few, Plays Peter Allen.
CHRISSIE AMPHLETT (The lead singer in the band "The Divinyls", plus several shows) plays JUDY GARLAND.
JILL PERRYMAN (Austarlias lady of the stage and screen {small and big} Hello Dolly!, Funny Girl, Annie, to name a few) plays Peter Allens Mother MARION WOOLNOUGH.
ANGELA TOOHEY (Cabaret, Jesus Christ Superstar) plays LIZA MINNELLI. A very scary fantastic roll. You would think you were watching Liza on stage she has the role down so well.
Robyn Arthur (Beauty and the Beast, Les Miserables, Cats, Cosi) plays several roles.
Murray Bartlett (4th season of Sex and the City, Australian tv & theatre shows)plays Greg Connell. Peter Allen's partner.

The music that features in this show is outstanding and moving. There are moving/love songs: All i wanted was the dream, Sure thing baby, Quiet please, there is a lady on stage, I'd rather leave while i'm in love, Best that you can do, Love dont need a reason, I honestly love you, Dont cry out loud, Tenterfield Saddler
Fun and enjoyable songs:Continental American, When i get my name in lights, Pretty Keen teen, Only an older woman, Dont wish too hard, Sure thing baby, Taught by experts, Not the boy next door, everything old is new again, she loves to hear the music, I still call australia home, I GO TO RIO!!

The stage, the music, the fun and the life of Australias and the worlds most out there and amazing enterainer comes to life in this musical and cd. When it comes to a stage near you, you have to buy tickets. And if your anything like the millions of Aussies that have seen it you will see it again and again. With the likes of the Phantoms, Les Mis etc.. around and gracing our stages after 20 or so years, i know THE BOY FROM OZ will still be around gracing our stages and our childrens stages for many many many years.

OH BOY! WHAT A JOY! THE BOYS A HIT!

THIS MUSICAL EXPERIENCE WILL TAKE YOU FROM NEW YORK TO RIO AND OLD LONDON TOWN! BUT STILL CALL AUSTRALIA HOME!
OR YOU MIGHT WANT TO GO TO RIO!

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......1999-12-15

Well, I saw this play while in Syndey in '98, and loved it then, and the more i listen to the soundtrack, the more i love it. It is amazing, and it totally recaps the feel of the play. I honestly love you, and Tenterfeild Saddler are two of the most amazing songs ever writen, and they are even more wonderful on this fabulous album! All praise Peter Allen

      4 out of 5 stars Almost Great.......1999-06-09

The problem with this CD is that it contains only a fraction of the music in the show itself. Admittedly, it contains the major numbers, but a lot of good stuff from the original show is missing. Since it is the only CD available, I recommend it, but if and when this show gets to the London or New York stage, a CD containing more of the entire work will doubtless become available. The liner notes are sparse. The listener who has not seen the show will not have a clue as to what is going on with the story line. This is a real shame, because understanding the story line brings a special poignancy to many of the songs. If you can wait a year or two for another edition to appear, do so. Otherwise buy it now. If it were complete and had better liner notes, I'd give this one five stars plus. The fellow playing Peter Allen and the gal playing Lisa Minelli are dynamite talents.

      5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT - A GREAT CD.......1999-04-17

I must say I have never seen the show here in Australia but after listening to the recording I will have to go see it. The quality of sound is perfect and the track changes are also perfect. Some of the songs on the CD are so well sung it almost brings a tear to your eye for example TENDERFIELD SADDLER, I HONESTLY LOVE YOU and DON'T CRY OUT LOUD The songs arent sung by one person, lines of lyrics are given to characters. Well worth buying to add to your collection

        Album Description

Diana Rogerson was a member of cult band Whore 156 in the 1970s. Dubbed ''the female Whitehouse,'' they later mutated into Fistfuck in the early `80s. They were legendary lynchpins in the London underground industrial scene, alongside bands like SPK and the aforementioned Whitehouse. Rogerson later went on to do vocals for Nurse With Wound and Shock Headed Peters, and worked alongside Foetus. She made two albums in the `80s under the pseudonym Chrystal Belle Scrodd. They were described as psychedelic outsider classics by critics and gained underground notoriety. These albums were originally released on the highly collectible United Dairies label. The Lights Are On But No-One's Home, released on United Jnana, is the long-awaited follow-up to Rogerson's 1987 album Belle De Jour. It is a collection of new songs and instrumentals in her unique style, recorded with the help of Steven Stapleton and Colin Potter (of Nurse With Wound) and also Matt Waldron of irr. app. (ext.). Recently, the early recordings of Fistfuck live performances were released by the Viennese Actionist Recording label and have already sold out! Rogerson is also a guest vocalist on the new Faust album.
