Twangy, steeped in Haggardesque melodies and vocal turns, and often raggedy in execution, Darryl Worley's sophomore album should send fans of honest-to-God country searching for the nearest skywriter. The melancholy true-life title tune is a big hit, and deservedly so, but there's lots more to sample. Yes, the kickoff tune, "Tennessee River Run," borrows so much from Alan Jackson's "Chattahoochie" that he ought to get royalties. And yes, Worley includes a couple of too-soft targets--Stephen Dale Jones's heart-tugging "POW 369" and "Spread a Little Love Around," a tune so syrupy ("Throw the ball for Rover") it could give family values a bad name. But "Back Where I Belong," so evocative of Haggard's homesick ballads and punctuated by pedal-steel tears, is the very heart of country music. Don't miss the myriad of deft instrumental touches--the chicken-pickin' guitar on the irresistible "Callin' Caroline" or the mournful fiddle intro on "The Least That You Can Do." Worley, who wrote much of the material, didn't get the kudos his 2000 debut warranted. Let's hope this one makes up for it. --Alanna Nash

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.

If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05

This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.

The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!

Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.

This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.

Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10

There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.

This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.

This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!

I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Twangy, steeped in Haggardesque melodies and vocal turns, and often raggedy in execution, Darryl Worley's sophomore album should send fans of honest-to-God country searching for the nearest skywriter. The melancholy true-life title tune is a big hit, and deservedly so, but there's lots more to sample. Yes, the kickoff tune, "Tennessee River Run," borrows so much from Alan Jackson's "Chattahoochie" that he ought to get royalties. And yes, Worley includes a couple of too-soft targets--Stephen Dale Jones's heart-tugging "POW 369" and "Spread a Little Love Around," a tune so syrupy ("Throw the ball for Rover") it could give family values a bad name. But "Back Where I Belong," so evocative of Haggard's homesick ballads and punctuated by pedal-steel tears, is the very heart of country music. Don't miss the myriad of deft instrumental touches--the chicken-pickin' guitar on the irresistible "Callin' Caroline" or the mournful fiddle intro on "The Least That You Can Do." Worley, who wrote much of the material, didn't get the kudos his 2000 debut warranted. Let's hope this one makes up for it. --Alanna Nash

This is a truly great album. The title track, a tear-jerking, heart-wrenching, beautiful ballad, is my favorite song on it (and one of my favorite all-time songs), but other standouts on this album include "Tennessee River Run" and "The Least that you can do." If you like Mr. Worley's music, you will enjoy this album. I guarantee it.

SPREAD MORE LOVE AROUND.......2005-01-09

This CD came to me almost at the same time as the tidal wave 'Tsunami' hit South East Asia, including my hometown country of Thailand. All 6 provinces in the South were ravaged by this mother earth's wrath. Thousands of people were killed just in Thailand alone. So I'd like to take this opportunity to express my deepest sorrow for those who lost their loved ones. And after I got a chance to clear my head and listen to this CD, I found that it contained the very message that can be passed on to those who're less fortunate than us, let's spread a little love around as Mr. Worley told us to do. And for you 'Jam' who almost lost your life at PP Island, I miss you. I MISS MY FRIEND!

Darryl is awesome!.......2004-11-25

I can't imagine any fan of today's country music disliking any of Darryl Worley's music. He just comes across as such an honest and genuinely good guy, you can't help but like him. This cd is a top-notch follow-up to his brilliant debut cd that is also excellent. I Miss My Friend is full of great songs. The opening track, Tennessee River Run, is a great way to start the cd. Comparisons to Alan Jackson's song Chatahoochie are inevitable, but that is just because the beat and energy of both songs is similar. I love Darryl's drawl on this song. I'm surprised that this song was not released as a single on the country charts. The song I Miss My Friend is an incredible song and very much a tear-jerker, as is the song Back Where I Belong. That song will hit a chord with anyone who has every been homesick for their old stomping grounds. The pedal steel guitar in that song intensifies the emotions. Some of the songs have a light-hearted feel to them, and even the song Spread A Little Love Around, with it's overly-sweet lyrics is good. The writing for many of the songs is just as strong as on the first cd. I think Darryl Worley is a horribly under-rated talent in the world of country today. He seems to get passed over at all the country award shows. And that's a real shame. He has a great voice, great charisma, and he writes some great songs. I only wish more people would notice his greatness. I always look at Darryl as the underdog in the country industry. All the spotlight seems to be focused on Tim McGraw and Toby Keith and Alan Jackson. Meanwhile, Darryl Worley, who is just as talented, is below the surface waiting for his time in the spotlight. Don't worry, Darryl. Your time is definitely coming!

After seeing "I Miss My Friend" on CMT, and thinking this is pleasant but bland, I was utterly surprised by the album has a whole. What a lot of great musicianship, humor, and bluesy-blue grass/country! Plus he throws in a country western tune ala Django Reinhart on track 9. This guy, and his band and arrangers, are no "Achy-Breaky Heart" pablum-pushers. What a delight!
