If you favor the more aggressive and reckless Old 97's of Wreck Your Life vintage as opposed to the more polished and poppy songsters of Fight Songs fame, this eight-song EP oughta do the trick. Bloodshot compiles four songs from two original seven-inch singles and adds four outtakes from the Wreck Your Life sessions--all were recorded at various points during 1995. The unrelenting rhythmic propulsion, the wild-eyed vocals, and the ferocious guitars that defined them in their salad days are all present and accounted for here. Rhett Miller's shrewd, half-sarcastic, half-soul-bearing lyrics make tracks like "Ray Charles," "Por Favor," and "W.I.F.E." both charming and chafing. Bassist Murry Hammond handles lead vocals on the two tamest tracks, the touching (really) acoustic train song "Sound of Running" and an appealing, straightforward cover of Johnny Cash's "Let the Train Blow the Whistle." Early Tracks reminds us that, at its best, alt country isn't a forced, heavy-handed combination of competing styles but a natural meld that works because punk rock and country music share the same urgency, honesty, and direct style of communication--whether it's punctuated by a lonesome fiddle or a crunching guitar. --Marc Greilsamer

The summer of 1979 seemed to be John Stewart's season. With the brooding hit "Gold," the former Kingston Trio member attained the chart success that had long alluded him. A year and a half later, he had no label, no chance for a follow-up. But in the early '80s, Stewart was making some very catchy, literate, and accessible pop music. These unreleased (and nearly destroyed) early '80s demos are the evidence. Stewart reworks some old Kingston Trio numbers, some gems from his '60s and '70s country-folk career, and adds many new lyrics, never heard before or since. The demo sound--a bit tinny and remote--doesn't do justice to the fine songwriting contained here, nor does the occasionally overwrought and overly rocking arrangements. More streamlined, almost Byrds-like efforts such as "Cheyenne" and "Diamonds in the Coal" get closer to the poetic soul of Stewart's folk-rock vision. Newcomers might be perplexed by this spotty compilation, but those passionate about this underappreciated journeyman singer-songwriter will warmly welcome the discoveries. --Roy KastenCustomer Reviews:

The CD is generously endowed with 18 songs, but not all are equally good. Listen to Tracks 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13, 14 and 15, and you have a very solid 12-track album. Taking all 18 tracks together, a weakness emerges, the weakness of repetition. You notice a sameness between the lesser songs and some of the better ones that robs the better ones of some of their power. You notice that there are too many songs in a major key, and it makes you long for a "Gold" or "Midnight Wind". When a minor key song finally comes along (#16) it is a weak one. A little more pruning by John and Tom would have made this collection a real killer. In giving this collection 5 stars, I am pretending they had done so.

All together, this is a jazzy and loose album, bringing in memories of the Miles Davis quartet and the Skatalites. I'd go so far to say that this is what "No Doubt" could have been if they tried hard enough and avoided being too commercial. It's worth the buy. I'd like to see what these guys are up to these days. I only wish there was a little more tightness in the lyrics.

Album Description
"Early Warnings" is a thematic and all-too-relevant collection of songs concerning war, human rights abuses and the spirit required to transcend these dysfunctions that were selected by the pioneering "women's music" and political activist Holly Near from two of her previous albums, "Watch Out! (1984) and "Sky Dances" (1989). Both of those records were originally released on Holly's own much-missed Redwood Records and have been unavailable for the last decade. "Early Warnings" contains nine songs from "Watch Out!" that are making their CD debut here, four songs from "Sky Dances," and the version of "Quiet Early Mornings" that Holly contributed to Appleseed's award-winning 1998 release, "Where Have All the Flowers Gone: The Songs of Pete Seeger, Vol. 1."As Holly describes the contents of "Early Warnings," "Most of the songs were written in the 1980s. Reagan was president Fear-based thinking and fundamentalism were on the rise. There were many early warnings and the storms just keep on coming."
The song "Watch Out" warns that "there's the rumble of war in the air," pointing a finger at the Reagan administration's militarism. The political "death machine" and the religious right wing are put on notice that "the meek are ready, armed with a loving hand," on "The Meek are Getting Ready." "War of the Flea" is also about the battle between the small and the mighty.
Holly's strong feminist beliefs are the basis of "She," which Holly calls "a mythological song about the rise of women in the face of oppression," "Step It Out Nancy," in which a woman rejects an arranged marriage, and "The Train Song," described by Holly as "the lament of a poor woman who can't seem to get out of her situation of bad times and hard knocks."
Not all of "Early Warning's" songs, many of them Near originals, concern confrontation. "Sky Dances" is a Native American tribute to nature. "Couple of Friends" and "West Virginia Friend" are tranquil meditations on friendship, and "Sun Won't Stop" is about Holly's father. The CD ends on a hymnlike note with "Quiet Early Morning," reminding us "We can still have singing tomorrows."
Holly's warm, unafraid vocals are accompanied by world-renowned instrumentalist John McCutcheon (dulcimer, banjo, guitar), members of the chamber folk ensemble Trapezoid, New Age bassist Michael Manring and longtime Near associate John Bucchino on piano.

Moving, Inspiring, Get Up and Go.......2004-04-29
Holly has a very polished voice without sounding like an opera singer. Her words are clear and easy to follow. I like her music because there are many songs I can sing on my own or sing along with. That to me is the true test of a songwriter and singer; if you can carry them along with you in your head or sing along. Too often these days, without a lyric guide, I can't understand even a fourth of the words of a song.
Also, if you are feeling frustrated with our world situation and need some hope, Holly's songs on This album both remind us we must change ourselves and our society and at the same time, give us hope that change is possible. I don't feel so alone when I hear her words. This is not a professional review; just one that says this is one of her best and very much worth buying.

This collection of the songs Steve Earle recorded before his full-length debut, Guitar Town, in 1986 is interesting only as a historical document. In fact, there's very little here to predict the eye for detail that would soon emerge. Most of the 14 songs here are rockabilly-like numbers that sound downright generic due to cliched lyrics and tepid playing. Even on songs he'd later rerecord more successfully--most notably "The Devil's Right Hand"--the insights are muted by how far Earle has to go as a singer. This portrait of the artist as a young man is more like a sketch, and none too revealing. --David CantwellCustomer Reviews:

A Nice Rockabilly Collection.......2003-03-08
I do agree that for the price this is a very good buy. The great majority of songs are in a rockabilly vein with some coming very close to being considered C&W. I especially enjoyed the instrumentals which were pure rock n' roll with wailing saxes. There are some nice captioned photos but no liner notes on the artists or any indication where or when the songs were recorded. I got the impression these were probably recorded in the late 50s, possibly in the Tennessee area.
Basically I would say that if you can't deal with rockabilly or C&W, skip it. If you enjoy that type of music, buy it!
