Since they first discovered country music as members of England's beloved Mekons, Sally Timms, Jon Langford, and Rico Bell have been firing off albums of their own interpretations of the genre: Timms and Bell as solo artists, Langford with his fiery Waco Brothers. On Timms's first full-length collection of her so-called "art country," she tames her former band's beer-and-whiskey rep in favor of stripped-down, traditional performances of songs she cowrote with Langford, and covers of those written by Robbie Fulks, Johnny Cash, Jeff Tweedy (of Wilco), and the Handsome Family. With a sweet-as-honey delivery that often turns into a spoken whisper, Timms can follow a waltz about milkmen with Roy Rogers roundups about Dr. Strangelove, but it's on the fiddle-driven romp "Snowbird" that Cowboy Sally's true Mekons spirit comes alive. --Scott Holter
Product Description:
On this handsome little package, Cowboy Sally curls up by your bedside and softly croons a dozen lullabies for adults about dreaming cowboys, sad milkmen, sweetheart waltzes, Dr. Strangelove, and bloody snowbirds. Sally does the Roses with a great bluegrass kick!.......2005-10-04
The Bluegrass chops that kick that song off must come from somebody who grew up on Del McCoury. It could be Del McCoury! Along with McCoury's "High on a Mountain," Sally's version of "When the Roses Bloom Again" ranks at the top of my "Opening Measures that Grab You" list.
Absolute Beauty.......2003-08-07
A little sleepy in spots, but high points are special.......2003-06-27
Analogies aside, Timms deserves a lot of credit for producing an album that strives for the energy of altcountry while avoiding too much GenX irony. It's definitely postmillenial, but not as studied as Prairie Home Companion, though Timms would be an appropriate guest.
Great effort.
Different country (from a different country!).......2003-01-14
Outstanding album from an unlikely cowgirl.......2002-07-03
Even though she has lived in America for many years now, she still has an English accent. The musicians are of a high calibre. They get their chance to shine, but it is Sally's haunting voice which is the outstanding feature of this album.
The songs all soft and slow - even her cover of Johnny Cash's Cry Cry Cry, which we all know as an uptempo rocker - it's almost unrecognisable here.
This album is pure magic, nothing like any mainstream album, nor like any other cowboy music that I've come across - cowboy albums are usually more upbeat than this. It is therefore difficult to say which customers this is most likely to appeal to, but it will certainly appeal to those, like me, who are always looking for something different.
