Country Soul Brother

Hang on! After the title track storms out of the chute like a bucking bronco, Jesse Dayton takes listeners on a wild ride across roadhouse country. He swaggers his way through "Tall Walkin' Texas Trash" as if channeling the cocksure spirit of Waylon Jennings (with whom Dayton recorded as a guitarist) and conjures the border cantina atmospherics of Doug Sahm on the accordion-laced "All Because of You" and "Moravia." The album takes a detour with a revival of the Cars' "Just What I Needed," rearranged for fiddle and steel guitar. Best of all is the down-home soul of "Ain't Grace Amazing." Riley Osbourn's keyboards and Carolyn Wonderland's backing vocals add a bluesy strain, while the horn charts on "It Won't Always Be Like This" and "Just to Get You Off My Mind" sound more Memphis than Nashville. With some down-and-dirty guitar powering "Talkin' Bobby Dale's Hard Luck Blues," the album never loses its reckless energy nor compromises its independent spirit. --Don McLeese

I heard a Jesse Dayton track on an Americana compilation two years ago. It was pretty good, but didn't prompt me to run out and purchase a CD. My loss.

This is how country music is supposed to sound. There are a couple of tracks that explore a Stax/Memphis soul sound, but the heart of this CD is Texas honky tonk, amiable, fresh and effortlessly enjoyable. My only complaint...and it's a minor one...this is so polished, I'd prefer a few rough edges here and there.

5 out of 5 stars hidden roots or rockabilly.......2006-11-02

Brother Claude ROCKS! He rocks, he rolls, he preaches, he pleads, he strums and hums, and so on. This is an invaluable recording, capturing authentic country gospel music at its most fervent and moving. For those attempting to unearth the roots of rockabilly, this disc should not be overlooked. Sleepy LaBeef, the great towering rockabilly giant, said what made Elvis different was his gospel feel coming through when he covered Arthur Crudup and Bill Monroe. Claude Ely has a bit of that same feel. The "crossover" and merging of black and white styles that ushered in rock & roll was already taking place in the gospel music world. Check this crazy disc out and see for yourself.

While this is not the best work of Claude Ely, it is all that is apparantly available. Buy this great rendition by one of the greatest mountain gospel singers of all time. It brings tears of joy to my eyes when I hear the jubilation in his voice he was so happy when he sang. I always liked the way he sang Little David play on your harp.

I was fortunate enough to have traveled with Brother Ely and his son Sonny, and nephew Randall. He used to call me his little brother. We traveled through Illinois, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas in some wonderful meetings. I was with him in services in Alabama, Kentucky and Indiana and my fondest memories are reserved for the services that I conducted at the church that he formerly pastored in Cumberland, Kentucky.

I can still hear him talk about that little cabin and wife in Pennington's Gap on Puckett Creek in Virginia. The last song I remember hearing was "Go down yonder Gabriel and put your foot on the land and sea, but don't you blow your trumpet until you hear from me cause there ain't no grave gonna hold my body down."

Many of his songs wer sung by greats like Mahalia Jackson and other spiritual singers, but not with the spirit and love of Claude Ely.

We Salute you Claude Ely, we'll see you in the morning...

5 out of 5 stars Holy Ghost Fire Filled Music.......2003-03-01

What this world needs is more men of God like Brother Ely!!! Soon as I started playing this CD I could feel the Holy Ghost Fire run down thru my soul!!! I'm a young Pastor of a small, but growing church, the Happy Corner Pentecostal Church, & would love to tell you , that you wont be disappointed with this CD, as it's songs are truly a part of the great Pentecostal movement of Jesus Christ that swept thru this area many years ago & is still thriving today with many of these great songs being sung in our churches today. I just thank the Lord for this CD & am sure that all of you will enjoy the CD as much as i did.

5 out of 5 stars Claude Ely at his best........2002-11-27

I am one of many nephews of Claude Ely. He was my mom's oldest brother. I was just goofing around on the internet one day when I found out about this CD. Of course, I bought it. This CD exemplifies what Claude Ely was about. He had such a passion for the Gospel that could be felt thru his preaching and his music. Many may not know this, but he had said that when died, he wanted to be in church. The night that he passed away, he was in church, sitting at the organ and singing "Where Could I Go But to the Lord". What a testimony!!! He was an amazing man that God chose to take home way before we were ready, but he lives on today in the hearts of all of those, whose life he touched.

There are at minimum, 27 different releases on 24 different labels of his Swing Time & Down Beat Recordings from 1949-1952 when he was 19 to 22 years old. Kiss Me Baby (Kissa Me Baby), I'm Going Down to the River and All to Myself Alone are three of my favorite songs. The first two have horns that just blast ya. The latter is so painful, so very much alone, in lyric and spirit. A true bluesy number that makes you feel the pain.
