Papa Mali is still great, but misses the Instagators.......2007-07-19
Drummer Frosty Smith, who added his lose, effortlessly funky second-line style drumming to Thunder Chicken has been replaced by Rob Kidd. Kidd's drumming is oftten distractingly heavy handed, and his rock oriented "caveman" beats rob the album almost entirely of its funk. With the exception of Henry Butler's brilliant piano on "Honeybee," possibly the album's best track, keyboards have been removed from the mix. Its a major loss since the howling Fender Rhodes and sweet organ were so much a part of what made Thunder Chicken great. Lastly, the thumping bass guitar from the last album has largely been replaced by the sousaphone work of ledgendary Dirty Dozen founder, Kirk Joseph. Joseph's playing is brilliant as always, so this is not necessarily a criticism, but the change is dramatic.
Despite these changes, Do Your Thing is not a bad album, and its biggest redeeming feature is most definitely Papa Mali's songwriting, which has grown more singularly distinctive in the years since Thunder Chicken. "Honeybee" sounds as if it could be a New Orleans standard, full of the same timeless grace as many of the city's ancient tunes. "Little Moses" lopes along with surreal, biting imagery. The albums final four songs are all excellent, amply making up for clunkers like "I Had The Dream." From "Girls in Bossier City," a dark hallucinatory meditation that burns with energy throughout, to "Hallelujah, I'm a Dreamer," the albums touching folky closer, the mood and vibe of the album are enough to lull anyone into a trance.
Those looking for a funky, dancable swamp funk album should look elsewhere. But for anyone who loves Papa Mali's simple, but evocative lyricism and haunting spirituality, Do Your Thing is fascinating.

Classic covers in Willie's own style.......2006-05-27
The title track was an American hit for Arlo Guthrie but no version of the song ever charted in Britain. I've heard many versions of the song including excellent versions by Judy Collins, John Denver, Lynn Anderson, Johnny Cash and Sammi Smith, but Willie's version is my favorite.
As already mentioned, the oldest song here is Cry, Johnny Ray's debut single and one of his biggest American hits. (There were no British charts at the time.) The song became a top five country hit for Lynn Anderson in the seventies, since when several other country singers recorded it including Crystal Gayle and Janie Fricke.
Just out of reach has been covered by many pop, R+B and country singers down the years. I believe that Patsy Cline's 1958 version is the original though her version was not a hit.
Elvis Presley has recorded two of the songs here - Until it's time for you to go (originally written and recorded by Buffy Sainte-Marie, though Elvis may have recorded it after hearing Neil Diamond's version) and Good time Charlie's got the blues.
Dave Loggins has a long and distinguished career as a songwriter but his achievements as a singer are much more limited - however, he had a huge American hit with Please come to Boston. Many country singers have since covered it including Tammy Wynette, Glen Campbell and Reba McEntire.
She's out of my life is a Michael Jackson song. I've never been a huge fan of his but I would be if all his songs were this good. Willie was not the first country singer to cover it as Barbara Mandrell did it in 1981 as He's out of my life, while Johnny Duncan and Janie Fricke did a duet version.
Lee Greenwood had a big country hit with It turns me inside out. He also recorded Wind beneath my wings and had a minor UK hit with it in 1984, but that song was a much bigger success for Bette Midler who had a major transatlantic pop hit with it in 1989. Curiously, it was originally an R+B song, though the first popular version was by Gary Morris, who had a top five country hit with it in 1983.
Willie has recorded Why are you picking on me several times - it is one of his old songs from the sixties - but I don't know of any covers by anybody else
If you enjoyed Willie's album, Always on my mind, you will enjoy this.

Here's a bountiful blues buffet from deep in the heart of Texas, courtesy of the long-running Austin City Limits television series. Texas talents--including Lightnin' Hopkins, represented by a suitably idiosyncratic "Rock Me Baby"; the razor-sharp Albert Collins, ripping through "Travellin' South" in front of a horn-powered band; and W.C. Clark, the godfather of the Austin blues scene, who sparkles on a song by hometown hero Willie Nelson--make the most of their spotlight time. And, naturally, there's Stevie Ray Vaughan, who leads Double Trouble through a tight and tasty "Love Struck Baby." Jimmie Vaughan's tribute to his blues brother, "Six Strings Down," follows in an example of the collection's creative sequencing. In like manner Gatemouth Brown's "Born in Louisiana" leads into Dr. John's New Orleans version of "Since I Fell for You," and Clark's rendition of "Ain't It Funny How Time Slips Away" segues into B.B. King's personalized cover of Nelson's classic "Night Life." The honorary Austinites, including a rambunctious Buddy Guy and a solo Rory Block, also make considerable contributions, the best probably being Taj Mahal bouncing through "Queen Bee" with Ben Harper on slide guitar, although Keb' Mo's straightahead "Tell Everybody I Know" isn't far behind. --Michael PointCustomer Reviews:

Makes you want to go!.......2006-04-18
The CD opens up with "Debaser" by the Pixies. I've never been much of a Pixies fan for whatever reason, but this was a pretty good selection (though I'm not sure I'd have started the CD off with it). Dashboard Confessional and Franz Ferdinand were both excellent. And the Blind Boys of Alabama doing "Walk In Jerusalem" (one of my alltime favorite spirituals) made the album for me.
A few bands I hadn't heard before were Los Lonely Boys, Calexico, and Drive-by Truckers. These bands reminded me why I love compilation CDs so much - you always find something new to listen to.
Every CD has its weak points, though, and this CD had a few. I wasn't impressed with Broken Social Scene - I found the vocals to be a little weak, but I chalk that up to my own musical taste. I'm also not a big Shelby Lynne fan. But the weak parts of the CD are more than made up for by the new discoveries I made.
They say that diversity is the spice of life. If that's the case, the Austin City Limits festival is a spicy dish indeed. And I like spicy.
Some of the best names in the indie scene are here.......2005-11-15
Overall, an excellent selection of music. My only issue with it (and most of these live compilations) is that they can only capture a tiny piece of the real thing, which is why I give it four stars.
Too much heat in Austin..........2005-09-16
Diversity is the key here, with acts from virtually every corner of contemporary music contributing a song. Perhaps the best thing about this release is its diversity, because it allows the viewer to familiarize themselves with acts that otherwise might have been overlooked. Fans of the Pixies get a chance to hear My Morning Jacket (and vice-versa), while fans of Sheryl Crow get a gander at The Soundtrack of Our Lives (both on the DVD only).
The DVD is the better deal here, since it contains two disks, and contains eight performances not included on the CD release. Oddly, some of the best performances are edited from the CD, particularly the stellar performance of Soundtrack of Our Lives (perhaps the best of all included here) and Howie Day's odd `solo' performance with multiple tape-looped versions of himself as accompaniment.
Consistency is in short supply, though, and both the disk and the CD drag at times. Broken Social Scene's "Anthem for a 17 year-old Girl" is about as tedious as the title suggests. Los Lonely Boys make an attempt to channel the spirit of Stevie Ray Vaughan on a track called "Crazy Dream", but they end up falling far short of their mark. Better is the Old 97's, who get by just fine by sounding exactly like their smart-ass selves on "The New Kid", and Roseanne Cash, whose understated presence lends some grace to the disk with "Seven Year Ache." Unfortunately, though, 100-degree temperatures can suck the energy out of a person, and the languid, mid-tempo pace of many performances included here seems to reflect the heat in ways that might not translate, especially in the comfort of my regulated, 68-degree environment. All in all, the Austin City Limits Music Festival is impressive for attracting a wide variety of musicians, but its occasional lack of energy and continuity render it ultimately less than satisfying. Amazon.com essential recording
Christmas jazz albums come and go with each end-of-year holiday season. And while they may make for good soundtracks to that holiday spirit, rarely do they stand up as much more than that, and certainly not as anything approaching a serious listen. While the material here may be rendered in the familiar Christmas spirit of good cheer (check out Wynton Marsalis on the back cover with mismatched green and red socks decking out his white suit), and the songs are in the familiar Christian tradition of the holiday, the arrangements are fresh and are delivered with memorable turns on "Silent Night" by opera diva Kathleen Battle, and on "Sleigh Ride" by Jon Hendricks. The playing is spirited and the material is dealt with in a manner suggesting great care in both delivery and arrangement. --Willard JenkinsCustomer Reviews:

Fabulous overview of 1930's territory music scene.......2001-11-14
These bands toured on the back roads of Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, and Arkansas and played mostly one-night stops at local taverns and dance halls in colored neighborhoods during the 1930's and early 1940's.
Many of Kansas City's bands went on to fame and fortune, and Count Basie was probably the most famous of these. Other bandleaders like Ernie Fields found local fame on the Kansas City - Oklahoma City - Dallas circuit, but never made it big nationally.
While this CD was conceived by CBS/Sony Entertainment as a companion to Robert Altman's movie "Kansas City", it can be thoroughly enjoyed by anyone who is looking for a good collection of swing tunes, or who wants to know more about the roots of the Swing Era in the southwestern United States.

A completely overlooked thing. Something from another time........2007-06-13
This is a portion of the picture that this album's spell casts on me. Its a distinguished album of the upmost quaity, sophisticated and shiny. If you're wondering 'how can this be the product of that voo-doo singer they refer to as the good doctor?' well, I offer no explanation. Simply that it is what it is, a total deviation from what our good doctor was known for, and what's more a delightful one. I am convinced that this little known elegency is Dr. John's best work of all time. Every time I tried to like his work, it just wasn't quite what I wanted, but almost. Well, this is the album that delivered. A complete 5 star. And it goes beyond music because it doesn't just offer one artist's sound, it brings with it a whole experience from one golden age, maybe one that's only found in your imagination.
The songs that leave the biggest impressions are as follows:
"Dance the Night Away" is happy, celebrating about long awaited and finally found love in the nighttime streets of downtown.
"Street Side" is found in the suburbs. Street life. Old brown brick buildings serve as the backdrop walls in this story.
"Rain". A cloudy day, depressed against the grey silhouettes of tall buildings.
"Fire Of Love". Love happily ever after. How can things go wrong? It feels like it will last a lifetime. Everything's going to be alright now.
"Sonata/He's a Hero" is a portrait of one slick character. He lives in the spotlight of the nightlife in top hat and tux. Lady's man, lavish and cool.
"City Lights". A sad finish for today, a lonely one. But a bright hope for tomorrow in this big city of adventure.
And as for the musical side of it, well, its all here. One masterpiece of an artist detailed to the last degree. Even the album art is amazing, synchronized to the music's every step. You may or may not love it, or get as much out of it, but it definitely deserves a place among music's finest, even though alot unknown. Try it.
