Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.

This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

I love his voice and this is one of Johnny's best. I only hope he will record another CD that has such beautiful songs on it. I am waiting to hear that something this good comes out again.I play it over and over and never get tired of the love songs he does.

A Good CD.......2006-07-18

Johnny Rodriguez has one of the finest voices in Country Music, and although this album was released nearly 10 yrs ago, it's the latest collection we have from him! Personally, I prefer the early-'70's sound that he provided; this CD, while good, is more reflective of his later '70's-early 80's sound. But, there are a few songs here that harken back to Johnny's traditional country sound, which makes this a must-have album. The best number here is "Corpus Christi Bay", a true redneck reminiscing song if there ever was one....noone could pull this number off except Johnny. Other notable mentions are: "Big Red Sun Blues", "Every Night About this Time", and "When it's Your Turn To Fall". Although modern "Country" Music has reverted to a Boy-Band, Pop-sound, I hope Johnny Rodriguez will put out another album soon. And, if it's half as good as this one, I'll be the first in line to buy it.

... so I guess that makes this incredible album timeless. What a great record! I played two CDs today, the new George Jones release ("Hits I Missed...And One I Didn't") and Johnny Rodriguez "You Can Say That Again," and you know what? I can honestly say that I believe that country music can still be great. And that in spite of all the sanctimonious empty hat Burger King cowboy rubbish that comes out of Nashville these days. Go for this one, brave traveller. Your heart will sing and you'll find yourself once again completely loving life.

The Dawn Of A New Sound Has Arrived.......2001-02-19

Johnny Rodriguez's new sound has arrived with a newness all of its own. In my opinion, his latest sound is fuller, more mature, naturally sincere, and reflective, which makes it all the more meaningful as he sings songs that mirror stories he handpicked to convey all that, he himself, has gone through. I believe his career will have the ripple effect of continued success as long as he stays visible, in the making, and on center stage. Clearly, he has proven himself (paid his dues) with hit after hit and could disappear if that's what he chooses to do, but if he wants to stay in the mainstream and continue to climb than that is an opportunity that is available, as he certainly is as good, if not better, as the rest. Mr. Rodriguez is very good at capturing human nature's essence of failures/successes; man's heartache, misery, and love; all the makings of great country music songs. He speaks and sings the common language of love in all its dimensions. The songs on this CD bring out feelings/thoughts that anyone can relate to such as lonliness, ambition/success, happiness, and heartache. The catalyst manner in which he plays ballards and "dance kicking" music gives a nice flavor to sing and dance to. I enjoyed the CD, "You Can Say That Again." I particularly liked, "Corpus Christi Bay" and the real to life identity Mr. Rodriguez associates with it. In addition, I thought it was a special touch in recognizing and giving special thanks to his mother, Isabel, and brothers and sisters. How could you not admire and respect this talented artist who unquestionably, still has what it takes.

Album Description

“Broadway: Love & Laughter” is terrific. Singer/actress Eileen Mager performs twenty-three of the greatest songs from Broadway musicals in a way you won't soon forget. There are some real oldies, as well as more current songs, and everything from tear-jerkers to laugh riots. They have great lyrics (and you'll understand all the words) and great tunes. She'll have you laughing and crying and having a ball. Ellen Brown's accompaniments offer just the right touch -- for example, “Little Girl Blue” has a great blues sound to it. This is a CD not to be missed, and perfect gift for friends and family.

Broadway musicals have always been about love in its infinite forms. This has resulted in a huge crop of wonderful love songs — joyous, sad, flirtatious, angry, passionate, mischievous, touching. They range from the deeply serious to the out and-out hilarious, as, come to think of it, does love itself.

So in this recording, West Side Story's Maria proclaims her joy in “I Feel Pretty” and South Pacific's Nellie Forbush displays similar feelings in “A Wonderful Guy.”

We also have Guys & Dolls's Adelaide singing “Adelaide's Lament” about the cold she's developed because of the frustration of a 14-year engagement to Nathan Detroit that seems destined never to result in a wedding.

Pal Joey's Vera, a sophisticated “older” woman, who knows Joey isn't worth it, sings about finding herself nonetheless “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.”

Of course, Kate of Kiss Me, Kate, in no uncertain terms, announces “I Hate Men,” while Oklahoma's irrepressible Ado Annie sings “I Cain't Say No.”

If Julian Bream's recordings were letters, his would all be hand written rather than typed.

Julian Bream not only plays the guitar, and the lute
(although purists and I suspect Bream himself would say rather unconventionally), but most of all, Bream plays MUSIC. This is very, very important. There are many fine guitarists around today, but I doubt any could match Bream's sheer musicality when these recordings were made.
This 28 CD box set is a lesson in music making, regardless of what instrument is being played. The recordings are the complete RCA Bream catalogue from 1959 to 1989. If you can find the complete box set or even any of the individual volumes, I suggest you make the purchase. (Shame on RCA and BMG for not keeping this box set and "all" the individual volumes in print.)
Some of the higlights of Breams remarkable talent are his
interpretations of Britten's "Nocturnal", Walton's "Five Bagatelles", the instrumental and vocal works (with tenor Peter Pears) of Dowland, the "first" complete guitar works of Villa-Lobos, a thorough history of the guitar in Spain from the Renaissance to the Present on period instruments, plus all the works that have become classical guitar standards by Bach, Sor, Giuliani, Albeniz, Rodrigo, plus the "new" standards by Brouwer, Arnold, Berkeley, Britten, Walton, etc.
Music making of this caliber is rare indeed. Buy it if you can find it. Good Luck !

If you can find this set buy it fast. There are not to many of these left out there. This has it all. Plus Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of all time.

This a an wonderful collection of Julian Bream. He is the master of master . I always admire his talent as a genius of this centure.

Who don't want to have a wonderful classical guitar collection? Well, this pack consists in 28 CDs, more than 1.000 minutes of music, distribuited by different titles as Baroque Guitar, Spanish Guitar, etc. Some highlights are here, like Asturias, Fernando Sor variations on Mozart's Magic Flute, Paganini Grand Sonata, all Preludes and Etudes of Villa-Lobos, and, well, lots of really good things. Also, there are some cds Julian Bream plays Guitar with Orchestra, or with Harpsichords. Ah, he plays lute in some too. Unfortunately, there are 2 or 3 cds where a tenor sings and another which a woman says some poems, and those, in my opinion, are not very nice. So, it's a good collection, and if you can, buy it!!
