The Back of Your Mind

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Some bands' weepy waltzes and two-step tales of misfortune and misbehavior are just honky-tonk fantasy. The Domino Kings, however, speak from experience: former bassist Brian Capps quit the band prior to the recording of The Back of Your Mind, but not before discussing his differences with guitarist Steve Newman in a song-worthy barroom brawl. In the aftermath, the erstwhile trio became a quartet, as Newman and holdover drummer Les Gallier added Newman's cousin Jimmy Ginnings on rhythm guitar and ex-Shaver sideman Bert Parnell on bass. Captured by no-nonsense producer Lou Whitney (Skeletons, Morells), the new lineup cranks out retro tonk and classic pop that's predictably more robust than on Life and 20, particularly when the band is joined by guests like the Star Room Boys' Johnny Neff (whose caramel steel-guitar tone drips from Newman's "No More Trying") and Skeletons piano man Kelly Brown (who carries the melody of "What Do You Do About the Ring"). --Anders Smith Lindall

5 out of 5 stars Great album with acoustic vibe.......2007-03-30

The album starts with the touching "Wait For Jane," peaks with the incredible "Cindy," then rides off into the sunset with "Andy Climb Down." The album has a gripping acoustic vibe that blends triumphantly with Stephen O'Reilly's vocals. A powerful performance without raucous instrumentals that is worth a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Best album from the band.......2007-01-10

This is by far the best album by Tammany Hall NYC. I could do a review of each track, but what's the point? Every review would be "awesome track".

If you've heard some of their other work, or more commonly, if you've heard some tammany on the tv show Scrubs, then this is definitely an album you want

5 out of 5 stars acoustic perfection.......2006-03-31

I first heard the song "Wait For Jane" when it was used as "Wait For You" in an HBO promo for their Sunday Night lineup back in 2002. I immediately had to know who sang that song. My research led me to Tammany Hall NYC. I ordered the CD right away since it was only available on their website at the time. I was not disappointed. This disc is solid from beginning to end.

"Always On Sunday" was another song that HBO used, I believe, and it is simply amazing. I can't say enough about these guys, how they are still flying under the radar is beyond me.

I give this CD 5 stars because of the "turd factor". The "turd factor" score here is 0. Which is good. A turd is a song that is so unlistenable that it is a must skip. You can enjoy this CD from beginning to end and throw the CD remote away and let it play.

My search for their music has definitely paid off, this CD is still in my regular rotation 4 years after buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Had given up on music until..........2003-03-22

Tammany Hall NYC is incredible. I own over 800 CDs and for the past 6 months haven't bought a single piece of music because nothing out there was of interest to me. Until, I heard this band on HBO. It took forever for me to figure out who they were. I bought their album immediately and it is all I listen to. They have instantly become one of my favorite bands. Like other reviewers have written, every song can stand alone, not one song sounds like the next. The music is unlike any I've ever heard before. I highly recommend this album if you're looking for something that you didn't believe was even out there.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2002-11-10

I absolutely LOVE this band. This is the kind of music that you not only hear but feel. To the individual who what wondering about what song was on the HBO commercial, it is called Waiting For You, which is a remake of Waiting For Jane. The entire song is the same except they replaced Jane with You in the title and lyrics. Either version is great. I only hope more people come to learn about this band.

Wonderful selection of classic singers and songs. Special favorites are Ethel Merman and Barbara Cook.

5 out of 5 stars Love the choices.......2006-08-11

This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.

2 out of 5 stars coulda been a contender.......2006-03-15

The divas are indeed divine, but the choice of music sung left me wondering why, with so many other great music selection contenders.

5 out of 5 stars Two words: Julia Murney.......2001-09-03

OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.

Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.

Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!

I had the opportunity to hang out with these guys at Salmon Jam 2004, as volunteer driver and roadie. "Back of Your Mind" is one of my favorites, and a good sound check piece. We enjoyed having them in Cordova for three concerts in two nights, as another KCHU public radio volunteer and guitarist joined them to make a four piece combo. Stevie Newman and Les Gallier were joined by bassist Reed Herron (sp.?) for the Alaska trip. I'm waiting for their fourth CD, "Salmon Jam '04"! On the web: www.dominokings.com and www.kchu.org

2 out of 5 stars If you like Irish Folk music.......2004-05-13

Nothing memorable about the melodies after 5 or 6 listenings. They've lost their honky tonk twang, which is a shame. The singing is kind of like irish folk singing - okay if you like it. I compiled the best of this album and Life & 20 onto one CD - only took two songs from this one.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST LISTEN TO.......2003-01-18

I have to say I am not a honky tonk fan, but I really enjoyed this CD. Give it a listen and start your toe tappin'!

4 out of 5 stars Personnel changes provide focus on third LP.......2002-07-21

Perhaps it shouldn't be surprising that the Domino Kings third release is the most consistent of their career. It's not that acrimoniously departed bassist (and songwriter) Brian Capps wasn't an integral part of the Domino's sound, but with guitarist/vocalist Steve Newman responsible for the bulk of the new songs and singing, there's a greater sense of direction to the album. Newly recruited rhythm guitarist (and Newman cousin) Jimmy Ginnings chips in a trio of fine tunes (including the album's honky-tonk opener), making the album something of a family affair.

The revivalist air of their previous album ("Life & 20") has grown into a more organic presentation of their influences. There's plenty of twang, including the crying pedal steel of guest Johnny Neff (Star Room Boys) on the divorce-themed "No More Trying," the cheatin' tale "What Do You Do About the Ring on Your Finger," and a fine cover of Faron Young's 1969 hit, "Wine Me Up." The band's Bakersfield influences are heard throughout, especially in the singing and electric guitar picking of "In Case You Didn't Know," and David Wilson (Radio Flyer) adds his fiddle playing to "One More Chance."

But the band isn't just a one-note honky-tonk revival. They rev up a New Orleans shuffle on drummer Les Gallier's "Show Me," with producer Lou Whitney (Morells, Skeletons) supplying the bass and Newman the slinky lead lines. "The Outlaw's Song" waltzes from mandolins to electric guitars, and "Hard Thing To Know" has a syncopation and drama that brings to mind Gordon Lightfoot.

Personnel changes are a way of life for most bands, and for the Domino Kings the changes have brought a focus that's kick-started a fruitful new phase in their recording career.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful..........2006-11-14

So, what ever happened to The Stairs? They blew in, released a clutch of infectious, if a little retro, singles, an album, and then promptly disappeared, leaving the rest of us wondering what the hell had happened! Well, Edgar (Summerthyme) Jones is still out there - he signed my copy of this essential cd (if you're a Stairs fan that is) so I can vouch for that.

The Stairs were retro. Not just a cursory nod to retro, but the 'real thing'. They recorded all their output in monoaural! This cd is a collection of demos and a couple of tracks from the fabled second album that never appeared. There are tapes around - I've tried to get copies of them to no avail. So, for now and until the album is released, this is the closest we will get to that album... I'll have to be patient I guess.

      Album Description

Vaughan's second release, Somebody Besides Yourself was recorded mostly in Nashville with "A Cat Players." Vaughan's muse reaches another level heard here as a result of these twelve songs. All of her musical influences can be heard loud and clear while all at the same time being soft and intimate. This record has been described as "Healing Rock, Hippie Folk-Pop." Songs from this cd first helped launch Vaughan's music into acceptance from major television music supervisors. Four songs, "Truth," "Eye For An Eye," "Happy and Free," and "Right in Front of You" have been featured on primetime network TV. One track, "A Million Angels" was co-produced with Ben Keith (Neil Young's band and Jewel's "Pieces of You").
