Ricky Van Shelton sticks to his guns, specifically, the no-frills new-traditionalist sound that established him in the mid-1980s. While some stars of that era desperately chase current Nashville trends, Shelton never once allows his powerful voice to be obliterated by today's obligatory booming drums and bass. True, the gimmicky "From the Fryin' Pan" may be a lame attempt at a dance track, but "Call Me Crazy" and "Your One and Only" hearken back to his earlier uptempo hits. His skills with a ballad remain unimpaired, evoking passion on "Foolish Pride" and vivid desperation on "You Go Your Way (And I'll Go Crazy)." He also revives Charley Pride's magnificent 1969 plea "All I Have to Offer You Is Me." Yet occasional listlessness creeps in--understandable on the glib "Somebody's Gonna Lose," harder to fathom on the superior weeper "I Was Losing You." The album's true misfit, however, is "The Decision," a tale of an unwed mother's moral conundrum. This preachy homily clearly means a great deal to Shelton, but whether it fits the context of this particular album is another matter. Still, what's good here is good indeed, especially considering 2000's trendy market.

Excellent!.......2002-01-10
In my opinion, the score to this film is superior to the film itself. It's the only motion picture score that truly captures the sweet melancholy of the Fall. Try listening to it with headphones and you'll hear a highly dimensional sound, delicate and subtle. Reflective and spiritual. Just close your eyes and you'll feel the brisk autumn wind against your face, you'll see orange and brown leaves falling from the trees, and you'll hear the sounds of children carving jack o'lanterns. It's a short score, but truly excellent.
An excellent film!.......1999-01-31
The tracks " Visiting Ruth" and "Ghost Train" really make you think about the meaning of the film and what it says. The others add to the real flavor of Southern life which really is a unique characteristic. I love this film - I hope that if you haven't seen it and you do someday, that you will feel the same.

Great Service.......2005-09-10
My CD was just as described and it arrived faster than I thought it would. Definitely do business with them.
Fried Green Tomatoes.......2000-10-18
Ricky's latest CD, Fried Green Tomatoes, has the traditional country sound that so many country fans want but can't get on their radio stations. Every song on the CD is a winner and you would be hard-pressed to pick just one favorite. This CD is classic Ricky and if you're a true "Country" music fan and have not heard this CD, you're in for a big surprise. This is one to play over and over and over. The CD starts out with "Call Me Crazy" - a fun, upbeat song, then goes right in to the traditional country ballad which Ricky is so good at - "Foolish Pride", and just gets better with each song after that. This CD displays quality in the writing, arranging, production -- and of course singing. This is a great listening, sing-along CD for country music fans!
Worthwhile but not the greatest........2000-09-09
I bought this CD after hearing the song "Call Me Crazy" (which, by the way, is the best song on the CD). It's got several good songs, but as usual more slow ones than I care for (but I hate slow sappy sad songs). All in all, a good comeback CD from RVS. A lot better than the poppy crap that seems to have overtaken country music.
A Good Return and Change.......2000-08-18
I've never been a fan of Ricky Van Shelton. To me, much of his earlier music was too similar in theme, tone and delivery. With the release of this CD, however, Ricky performs a more diverse set of tunes and his voice has more dynamics and expression. "Somebody's Gonna Lose" "I'm the One" and the remake of "All I Have to Offer You is Me" are highlights of the set. Ricky manages to maintain some of his "traditional" sound, while coming into the 21st century with a little more progressive country influences. All in all, a very good CD and a lot better than his older stuff.

I have listened to this tape and think it is the best work, yet, by Ricky Van Shelton. I recommend it to everyone who loves music. This tape really shows off the multiple musical talents of Ricky Van. If you weren't a big fan before, you will be after hearing this one !

One of The Most Beautiful Scores Ever Composed For A Movie!.......2007-02-28
Thomas Newman is amazing! Over the last few years, I've become a huge fan, tracking down as many of Newman's scores as possible. "Fried Green Tomatoes" is a very rare score that I've been searching everywhere for. Unfortunately, trying to find a copy is almost impossible unless you want to spend a fortune! I'm sorry, but there's two Amazon sellers right now trying to sell this score for $165-$275! That kind of money for a used cd is just outgrageous! Luckily, about 6 months ago, I found a used copy on Amazon for $30. Normally, I wouldn't dream of spending $30 even on a new cd, but it was very well worth it. I have listened to this score well over 100 times and have never ever tired of it.
With "Fried Green Tomatoes," Thomas Newman has composed some of the most beautiful music ever made for a movie. "Smokey Lonesome," "The Smell Of Coffee," "Buddy Threadgoode," and "The Treehouse," all contain variations of the beautiful, yet simple main theme found in this score's stand out track, "The Whistle Stop Cafe." This is truly is one of the most beautiful tracks I've ever heard! "Visiting Ruth" is another memorable track that bears a striking resemblance to "An American Quilt" from another beautiful Newman score, "How to Make an American Quilt."
In short, if you love movie scores or you're a Newman fan, you've got to get this incredible score! By all means, I'm not recommending that you support sellers who are charging outrageously and highly inflated prices, but if you stumble across this score anywhere, don't hesitate for a second to purchase it. Keep checking Amazon, different online auctions, and other internet sites. You may get lucky and find one too. In the meantime, as was mentioned by another reviewer, if you have the Collector's Edition DVD, you can always play the score if you just go to the bonus section, choosing 'play score only.' Furthermore, if you're looking for a similar score that's still in print and just as beautiful, I highly recommend "How To Make An American Quilt" by Thomas Newman. It's still my #1 favorite score, followed by "Fried Green Tomatoes" which is a close second.
You already have the score.......2006-09-13
This is a great music score, remembering that the score is the music composed especially for the movie, whereas the soundtrack is various songs previously composed that are used in the picture. If you have the collector's edition DVD, so can easily listed to the score only, and don't worry about buying a high price used out of print CD. Go to the menu, then click on bonus materials. Click on "moments of discovery" and then click languages. Then click "music score only" to the left. Then simply hit "play" twice and you can enjoy the score while reading a book or whatever. You don't even need your TV on.
Before you spend $100. on this..........2006-03-23
Consider buying an iTunes Music Card (can even buy one through Amazon.) Three of the beautiful score tunes done by Thomas Newman are on their list!
I would buy this score in a heartbeat if it was for sale, and priced fairly.
Very beautiful score !.......2004-05-01
I have been looking for this score (not song soundtracks) in years... and finally I got one used cd from a friend from Malta. This maybe most the beautiful score that Thomas Newman has ever written. Unfortunately, this is very rare score. So grab it whenever you see an used copy. The new one seems impossible to find now because it is OOP!
Fried Green Tomatoes.......2003-12-02
This is one of my all-time favorite Thomas Newman sountracks, right up there with Little Women. Unfortuntely, it is no longer in print. Please help me locate a new or used copy to be given as a 25th wedding anniversary present. greenerk@att.net
