Unleashed Live [Live]

Editorial Reviews

Outside of Texas, it's hard to grasp the Beatlemania-like frenzy that can be directed toward these marginally successful singer-songwriters. At a packed Texas honky-tonk such as Gruene Hall, however, the brothers Robison and adopted kin Jack Ingram go over like the Second Coming, which doesn't mean they don't earn the reception. The three Texans take no chances with material--everything but Ingram's "Travis County" has been cut elsewhere--and deliver their most anthemic and popular tunes in straight-shooting, full-band, Outlaw country style. Small flourishes save these 12 songs (recorded one night in December 1999) from abject predictability: Bruce's Western swing version of Joe Dickens's "Good Life," his wife Kelly Willis's sweet guest harmonies on "Angry All the Time," and Charlie's self-deprecating tone on "Sunset Boulevard." Unfortunately, Ingram turns in four of his slighter tunes, including the obnoxious frat-brat anthem "Barbie Doll," which only makes the call-and-response of his audience all the more suspect. But if you've never experienced Texas frat-country hysteria first hand, this live set will get you more than close enough to the party. --Roy Kasten

4 out of 5 stars But, It'd be a solid "5"without Charlie's cursing........2003-08-06

Hey, I drove a tractor trailer for a living for 15 years and I can curse with the best of them. So, I'm no prude.

But...

Charlie's unneccessary cursing in "Sunset Boulevard" wrecks an otherwise awesome song and an awesome Cd.

Having said that, it is an EXCELLENT CD overall, and it really makes me want to pack up and move to Gruene, Texas!

3 out of 5 stars Marginal Live Frat-Country CD.......2001-10-13

I received an advance copy of this CD, and it's a good thing. I wouldn't pay for it. The best performances here are those of Charlie Robison's "Sunset Boulevard" and Brother Bruce Robison/Kelly Willis' collaborations, particularly "Angry All The Time." Ingram has not reached the songwriting competency level of the other performers, so his material is not as listenable as the rest. This music simply is not as important or as good as the music of fellow Texas songwriting alumni Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, or Guy Clark. Indeed, of almost greater importance is the ambience of Gruehn Hall, which can render almost any performance memorable.

4 out of 5 stars A good sampler, Buy CDs from all 3 instead.......2001-09-22

A live sampler of four songs each from brothers Charlie and Bruce Robison and fellow Sony/Lucky Dog labelmate Jack Ingram, this release provides a good introduction to all three artists. With the exception of "Travis County" by Ingram these songs are all available in studio versions. Diehard fans will want to have the CD to capture the feel of seeing these performers live. Someone not familiar with the artists may be inclined to purchase this CD to sample all three performers for the price of a single CD. If you like one, it's extremely unlikely you won't like all three, buy CDs from each instead.

The highlight of this release is "Angry All the Time" performed by Bruce Robison with harmony vocals by Kelly Willis that put the Tim McGraw and Faith Hill cover version to shame. The remaining tracks are all solid performances and a good cross section of songs from each artist.

5 out of 5 stars Toe Tappin' Good Music!.......2001-04-19

How can you hate this album? True Texan style honky tonk. The performances are great for a live album. Bruce cranks out a great set that sets the stage for the rest of the album, starting with a splendid version of "The Good Life". Charlie kicks it in gear with a terrific version of "Sunset Blvd" and cleverly works in the name Lewinsky (you just gotta hear it!). "Loving County" still gives me chills, hearing it live gives you an idea that his potential has not even been tapped yet. Jack Ingram, who I am ashamed to say I knew nothing about before this album, won a new fan with his awesome music. From "Mustang Burn" to "Barbie Doll", this guy gives you everything he's got. The Texas attitude may be more than some folks can stomach. But if you want a taste of talented musicians that put heart and soul into the music, do yourself a favor and buy this album. I spent lots of time in Texas honky tonks, and these guys give you a real sample of quality music. You don't have to be from Texas to love this album. If you understand real country music, you will quickly find this to be one of your favorite albums in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Yowsa!.......2001-01-05

Throw in a little Springsteen, a little Mellencamp a little Lucinda Williams and a whole lot of Texas and this is what you get. Absolutely one of the best CDs I've heard in a long, long time.

5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

4 out of 5 stars two bands for the price of one.......2007-02-06

Cactus consisted actually of 2 bands under that name, originally with Rusty Day, vocals/harmonica, Jim McCarthy, leadguitar, Tim Bogert, bass and Carmine "Animal" Appice on drums, they recorded 3 classic studioalbums "Cactus", "one Way ... Or Another" and "Restrictions", afterwards (without Day/McCarthy but) with Peter French on vocals, Werner Fritzschings on guitar and Duane Hitchings on keyboards released the final "Ot 'n Sweaty", with only a handfull of new songs and a live side, captured here. Although renamed "Swim" and "Bad Mother Boogie" with credits to the new bandmembers this is actually a live rendition of "Let Me Swim" from the first album and "Big Mama Boogie - Parts 1 & 2" from the second. Those final 4 tracks are energetic and the organ adds up to it. The other performances are by the original band and for a great part taken from their final show in Memphis, just before the end of 1971. They played a few songs from the albums and went into long jams. "No Need to Worry" exceeds the 20 minutes. "Let Me Swim" and "Big Mama Boogie - Parts 1 & 2" are also extended versions with interludes. It takes a long time before the latter finally exploses. Two other cuts (both also on the first set) hail from the "Isle of Wight" festival and another two of Gilligan's in Buffalo, NY. The band showed what they were up to, having a good time with the audience and enjoyed playing. Not only were they able to deliver great rocksongs in the studio but they could do the same on stage. This 2 CD set showcases that and hands you a fine document of an often unjustfully forgotten, overlooked or underrated seventiesband who did not stand in the shadow of many other great acts but was just that on its own. In 2006 they emerged again with threequarters of the first hour bandmembers (Rusty Day is not longer among us) and released "V" whilst are performing again but the former glory can not return.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2006-09-14

Outstanding live performance. Rhino captures Cactus at it's best. The quality of this recording puts you right in the auditorium with the band. This CD is meant to be played loud on quality audio equipment. A hefty price was paid for this CD and it is worth every penny!

5 out of 5 stars Compared to Jack Bruce, Tim Bogert shoulda' been named Tim Bogus.......2006-08-11

I'm a huge fan of early 60's & 70's hard rock bands but the moron above (Magdalena E. Mendola "polish girl") that wrote "Now Don't get me wrong I love Cream they planted the seeds '66-'68 and well Hendrix was not from this world '67-'70, but as far as Zepplin is concern they had great moments but let me tell you THEY CAN'T EVEN HOLD A CANDLE NEXT TO THESE GUYS!!" must still be stuck on an acid trip! I've seen Cactus, Cream, Zeppelin, Beck Bogus er... Bogert & Appice and at least 10-15 Jack Bruce concerts, including with West Bruce & Laing, the Ringo Starr All-Star Band (w/ Peter Frampton, Gary Brooker etc) & The Abbey Road Tour (w/ Mark Farner, Todd Rudgren, Chris Cross etc), and to this day, JACK BRUCE remains the BEST bass player music has to offer (not to mention has vocals, keyboards & harmonica playing). I may not be a wiz with words, but actions (live concerts, LP's, CD's DVD's) speak for themselves! Listen (or watch) any live (or studio) tracks on ANY Cream album (or Jack Bruce LP) and then try tell me one song that has better bass and vocals by Cactus! YOU CAN'T! Sorry Bro' (or is it Sis?), but you seriously need to replay your Cream and Jack Bruce albums (but I'm willing to guess you don't own ANY Jack Bruce. If not, GET 'em). Next time, try and compare Cactus to bands of equal talent and caliper. Don't get me wrong, Cactus is GREAT and I really dig 'em, but JACK BRUCE RULES HANDS DOWN! Comparing Cactus to Cream is just as bad as saying the boston red sux are as good as the New York Yankees! NO WAY MAN!

5 out of 5 stars Astonishing!! Even At Speculator's Prices!!!.......2006-06-13

I just paid an insane amount of moolah on Ebay for this, but make no mistake about it; THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE!! The firepower generated by the original 4 guys is easily on a par with all of their early 70's contemporaries, and wipes the floor with most of them.....Jim McCarty (from the Detroit Wheels, not the Yardbirds as the idiot wrote in one of their descriptions on Amazon) is the great lost guitar star of that era. He has it all; speed, bent notes till next Tuesday, and a fat tone that must have been overwhelming live. Of course it would have to be, given that the Appice/Bogert rhythm duo was such a 300-pound gorilla. Yes they were sometimes clumsy and Bogert couldn't find the groove with a shovel, but they had that indefinable something. One of the CD booklets called them the "American Led Zeppelin" and I would concur with that hyperbolic moniker. But the jackals charging 297.00 for this ought to be ashamed of themselves. I hope that these vermin send at least 50% of their ill-gotten gains to Tim, Carmine or Jim, I'm sure they could use the dough....And now I see they have reformed!!!! Maybe these discs will be available at normal prices soon and put a stop to this ridiculous speculating. BOTTOM LINE: GET THIS AND BECOME A BELIEVER!!!!

4 out of 5 stars great cd...Dont pay a ripoff price...shop around........2006-04-22

This is a fantastic cd set....The sound quality is full and powerful....just what you'd expect from these guys live...Please keep in mind...this is the 2nd lineup of CACTUS...Featuring Carmen and Tim...along with Werner Fritzschings-guitar..Duane Hitchings-organ, piano..Peter French-vocals..I had the opportunity to see these guys back in 1971....and it brings back the memories vividly...even without the happy smoke.

I found a brand new sealed copy of this on Ebay for $24.95 and it wasn't a bid.....I bought it outright...and it is the RHINO HANDMADE series.

What do you get when you breed remarkably gifted musicians with brilliant, momentous and heartfelt songwriting? You get The Fenwicks! Is it rock, ska, or funk? How about all of the above, driven to panic point with tribal-like percussion, cool array of horns, imaginative harmonies and untamed `lead' rhythm guitar. The tunes will reverb in your head for days.

Ferociously independent in style and ideas, The Fenwicks holler that love hurts, society is ruthless and the world is a mess. Listen to the lyrics and become a believer.

Schub sings, philosophizes and entertains with Vaudevillian physical comedy, costumes and props. See them live and your cheeks will hurt from smiling. `Truth & Memory', recorded at a little Manhattan club in summer '02, captures the power and fun ... you'll be sweaty too!

A voice of their generation, The Fenwicks' statement is a modern version of the `live riotous or die' attitude we got from Indie pioneers like Black Flag, Minor Threat and Husker Du. The Fenwick experience is a reminder that musician's can have something to say and inspire you to do the `bone-yard boogie'.

Buy their album and listen to it - over and over again!
